[Q] Complete restock?/ Flash counter reset/ Downgrade I9300XXELLA - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have a SGS3, model number GT-I9300, Baseband version I9300XXELLA, once i got my phone i directly rooted it using CF-ROOT, and because of that the flash counter was triggered, then after i updated my phone using Kies as i was no longer able to update using OTA because its statues became "modified" i had to re-root again, this triggered the flash counter one more time.
now i need to send my phone to samsung due to hardware malfunction, so i tried using TriangleAway, then i un-rooted the phone using supersu, but after i restarted the phone its status in Settings>about device>status>Device status> is "modified", and i noticed that when i use check for updates it stays checking forever (a whole night) and never finish, and when i go to download mode it says the following:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: GT-I9300
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: No
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
i was advised to reflash my phone with an official ROM and that i did using "Samsung-Updates.com-GT-I9300-BTU-I9300XXELLA-1356163678" ROM and ODIN 1.85, but yet its the same wither in the device status, checking update takes for ever, and information in the Download Mode!
Can someone please tell me how to reset everything back to its original state wiping all the data on the phone, in detailed steps please!
what i want is to have my phone back as it was saying "normal" in the device status, and official in the SYSTEM STATUS, even if this means downgrading it to an older android version like ICS.
By the way my phone was bought from samsung italy, not attached to any service provider.
Thanks in advance.

the fact that you gave me those links means that my question was note clear
i saw those threads and did as they say! but they are not well maintained and they are full of unanswered questions, i actually started to answer some of them in there, that's why i started a new thread, but i guess it was a wrong idea,
if i may just one question, i am unable to locate the right stock rom for baseband I9300XXELLA, and Italy region. all the italian roms in samsung-updates are with different baseband or same baseband but different region! sammobile site appears to be offline,
sorry for the mistakes again!

My experience, so far, is that if you use Triangle Away (2.60 in my case) then should be an option that says "Allow tracker to run".
It has to be enabled, and once you check it, reboot inmediatly.
The status should be "normal" now...
If it doesn't work, try to reset the binary counter with that option already checked...
And another thing!
You must have stock kernel/recovery in order to make things work properly!

Help! Unsure of phone's firmware!

Hi, Thanks in advance for reading and helping me out with this issue.
Here are my phone information.
Model no: GT-I9100
Android Ver: 2.3.3
Baseband Ver: I9100CCKDH
Kernel Ver: [email protected]#2
Build no: GINGERBREAD.XWKDD
My phone is from Singapore so the original firmware should be the asian one (DXKI2). I wanted to root my phone so i followed instructions from this article.
Article url: androidadvices. com/ how-to-update-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-i9100-to-gingerbread-xwkdd-2-3-3-firmware
I followed everything it said, which was to first upgrade the firmware to XWKDD before rooting. I did not wipe any data before the upgrade. So at the end ODIN reflected a pass (green color) and i unplugged my phone. However it entered boot loop and i used the stock recovery mode to flash a stock kernel (DXKH2) to my phone. It seemed to have returned back to factory state but when i check my phone settings it reflected the different versions as mentioned in phone information above.
Please help as i have the conception that all version should be the same but mine is kinda all over the place. Am i wrong?
Secondly, KIES now does not recognise my phone's firmware when i plug it into the computer but i can still access my files through it. Why is that?
Thirdly, where should i go from here to root my phone? Please help provide me with answers and links so that i can eventually root my phone properly and install cyanogenmod onto my phone. I would really appreciate if someone could help answer my questions and give me step by step help for my problem. THANKS!!
Jephtath
Very old KDD firmware with looks like KH2 rooted kernel .
Secondly, KIES now does not recognise my phone's firmware when i plug it into the computer but i can still access my files through it. Why is that?
No codes match on Kies server .KDD and KH2 mix is not a known product .
One upgrade firmware to stock newer version Root phone if you need root to matching version as per instructions .

I am unsure of what do you mean.
However, what i did was to use ODIN and flash the stock kernel for DXKI2 for my phone. I made a mistake in telling you that my original firmware was DXKH2.
Now the phone's build number is still GINGERBREAD.XWKDD.
When I connected my phone back to the computer, KIES cannot read the phone as it says that i have to use the KIES PC studio mode to connect. This error did not take place before hand as KIES would automatically connect to my phone.
What should i do now? I don't know whether my phone is using the latest XWKDD firmware so it may not be ready for rooting. What should be displayed on my phone in order for me to know that the firmwares are ready to be rooted?
Please help me ASAP as I am afraid I have screwed up my phone. I dont even know how to bring it back to original factory settings and everything.

Mr. Egan showed you the links where to get your answers. Click on them and read and you will find everything you need, XWKDD is a firmware version that is ancient and outdated. You should flash new software for your country/region

Solution for [System status - Custom] to [System status - Official](WARRANTY PURPOSE)

Hi, for warranty purpose or some other purpose..to go back to stock rom.. triangle away app is used to reset flash counter..after using the app I got this
Current binary : no
Custom binary : samsung official
System status : CUSTOM
I've searched so many forums and googled so many times to find a solution
For making System status : official(Coz warranty will still be void)...so many people said to do a factory rest and some told to wipe data/cache in cwm.. but none worked..
Finally after switching on my mobile after the procedure to stock rom and resetting flash counter...I went to ABOUT DEVICE/SOFTWARE UPDATE and CLICKED CHECK UPDATE(should be connected to net) I got the message DEVICE REGISTERED...Voila System status changed to OFFICIAL and also in settings/about device/status changed from modified to normal
I searched for hours and hours for this but finally got a solution out of luck..thought this would be helpful for someone like me..who want their warranty back
PS: This worked for me dont know if it works for others..im just sharing my luck..now I got my warranty back and replaced my product (hardware issue)..Thanks

ya i agree there are some guides...but in every thread.. solution to change system status custom to official is this
'12. Once the phone is up go to Settings -> About Device -> Status, check if the device status says NORMAL... if it does, then the device is unrooted if it still says MODIFIED continue...
13. Reboot into Android Recovery by holding Vol UP + Home + Power till you see Samsung Galaxy S3 displayed on screen...
14. Do a factory wipe and wipe cache then reboot
15. The phone will be rebooted and can be sent in for warranty '
but it didnt work for me....ihve seen so many people replied.. asking .. my system status is still custom even after wiping ....these questions were asked in chainfire thread too...
so i thought this would be helpful....anyways you are the senior member u know better..
Thanks, satya - I have been struggling to get the phone back to its original state for warranty purposes, and your post was the only thing I could find that gave me the solution to that final piece of the puzzle. On my Galaxy S3, I didn't have an option for "Check Update", so I did an "Update Firmware" and then an "Activate Device". Between these two, it worked.
Although there's a lot of information out there about restoring your phone to factory state for warranty purposes, I have to say that it is scattered and often not very user-friendly. Here are the concise steps that I constructed, which hopefully will be useful to someone else in the future:
Pre-requisites:
1. Flash Clockworkmod (CWM) recovery onto the phone.*
2. Root your phone.*
3. Install TriangleAway on your phone.**
4. Download your stock ROM from samsung-update.com and extract from zip file to your hard drive.
Then:
1. Run TriangleAway on phone and flash counter to 0.
2. Turn off phone.
3. Reboot phone into Odin download mode (hold volume down+power+home when off) and connect USB cable.
4. Run Odin*** on PC, click PDA, and select tar/tar.md5 file of the stock ROM you downloaded.
5. Click Start to flash stock ROM and let it run its course (about 5 minutes).
6. Boot into download mode. If system status=custom, then:
a. Reboot normally
b. Go into Settings->System Update and do Update Firmware
7. Your phone now has stock recovery, stock ROM, no root, counter=0, and status=normal.
NOTE: You must reboot into download mode immediately after running TriangleAway. If you otherwise reboot the
phone normally, it will reset the counter upon reboot to 1 and you will need to run TriangleAway again.
* I used Samsung GS3 Toolkit to flash the CWM recovery and root. You can accomplish both at the same time by choosing "2" (root/unroot options) from the main menu, and then "3" (ALLINONE) from the next menu.
** TriangleAway can be downloaded from Google Play Store for a small fee, or you can find it online for free, download it, and install to your phone using an APK package installer (you can find in Play Store for free).
*** Odin is included in the aforementioned Samsung GS3 Toolkit (look for the executable in the directory it was installed to), or you can download it on your own.
Good luck everyone.

Yep and here is the root of the problem multiple posts on the same subject .
Some of those multiple posts are wrong or just another way of the old method . Other posts carry out the same task but with unnecessary steps added .
Plus noobs don't bother to learn the basics so the basic instructions like flash stock rom are a puzzle .

I click on Software Update like you mentioned, and got the message "the latest update has been installed". I rebooted the phone into Download Mode and System Status showed Official.
Thanks a bunch! :good:
Cheers from this noob for the useful information here

Very helpful information. .. Thank you brother. I have the same issue in my Galaxy S4. But now I'm not scared to leave my phone rooted and do whatever I want with my device, since the solutions are available. I don't really care about the warranty things, but you never know what's gonna happen "its just a normal device and it could get break easily". /SIZE]

Hello, I made the mistake of rooting my phone a while ago and now it needs a battery and jack connector replacement. I flashed the latest stock firmware via Odin(could install via SmartSwitch too but I have a bad internet connection and I was afraid of messing up). When in download mode everything shows OFFICIAL, knox warranty app shows 0x0(valid) and the recovery is the normal one. No root trace via app detection. Still, System Status shows Custom. :| Would there be any problem? Never mind guys after rebooting it again after writing this post it shows official and I am just standing here like... wtf happened???? xD
Is there a way of doing this to my note phone that stuck in boot loop after samsung update Only screen I can get into is the download screen. Binary says Samsung official but system status says custom. Sprint accused me of rooting the phone.

I'm asking you cause your a senior member and all. I know pretty much everything there is to know about samsung devices but mine has got me thrown right now... Galaxy Tab A7. Rooted it many times but not long after root it will give me the blue error screen on boot saying the device cannot boot due to being flashed with an unofficial firmware and shows that the issue is the vbmeta file. Only fix is to flash stock firmware. It will not boot otherwise... however even after flashing the newest firmware and the past 3... I've tried them all... the device still shows that it is custom under the settings/device status menu. I've reflashed using its PIT file with repartition, cleared EFS option, NAND erase... still always shows custom and won't do updates or anything. However in Downlad mode it shows Samsung Official.... Any idea what's up with that? I would have used combination file but the new security regarding that is another nightmare of its own...

Trying to upgrade to 4.1 (JB?) through Kies

Hey all,
Had my S3 for about 10months.
HANDSET DETAILS:
* Unlocked GT-i9300 (running GiffGaff sim)
* 16GB White, running Stock Touch-Wizzed ICS 4.0.4
* Baseband: I9300BVLE4
* Kernel Ver: 3.0.15-554502-user
[email protected]#1
SMP PREEMPT Sun May 13 11:40:33 KST 2012
* Build Number: IMM76D.I9300BVALE4
WHAT I'M TRYING TO DO:
I am not trying to root this phone (YET!), I am just trying to use Kies to upgrade to JB.
All the 'legal information' in the Settings menu is 'greyed out'. I cannot select, or update OTA.
I will probably get to the CM / custom ROMs sometime but for now I just thought I'd do a simple (I thought) easy upgrade to JB.
Kies recognises the phone, suggests I do a back-up (which I did), and then attempts to download a 3000mb install package. At this point, it throws up a dialog box showing a bunch of 'square characters' - the kind of thing you see if you don't have a language installed on your OS. (which is XP by the way).
It's an error for sure, as after closing it (OK is the only option), the download process loops as it asks me again 'do I want to backup before upgrade'. So I'm getting nowhere.
I'm not sure why Kies has such a problem with my phone.
If it's any use, I can say that this was bought brand-new, unlocked, from a retailer website, though upon boot it displays an Orange logo, and certain parts of the menus (although very few) were in French by default. I've registered the phone with Samsung on their site successfully so that's fine. I put in a QUERY for them to help but it's been over a month and nothing back so far.
So I thought I would come to the expert village and see if I can get some help.
-I'm hoping it's okay to ask about Official updating here and not completely boring ( ! ) as I'm aware this is a land of great rootery and customisation! which I think is great by the way :good:
Thanks to anyone that can help!
regards,
SkEvol (newbie)
Have a look in the stickies about how to use ODIN (its not difficult to use).
Then, I would advise you flash the latest official Samsung firmware from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610
Ensure you follow the ODIN instructions properly and make sure Kies isn't running when you use ODIN.
This will get you onto the latest version of JB to be released by Samsung...

Hi there Mike,
Thanks for the reply, while I'm quite happy to use some ODIN to do this (I don't mind a learning curve), I'm just a bit put off by the disclaimer "Using ODIN can change your bootloader to show that the system is MODIFIED and may increase your ODIN flash count. This may void your Warrenty".
-my phone is still under warranty and I would rather avoid breaking the warranty if at all possible.
Are there any other options?

I wouldn't worry about that tbh.
As your phone hasn't been rooted it shouldn't be an issue.
Also, there are ways to change the system flag back to 'official' using Triangle Away but I don't think you'll need to.

Thanks again Mike,
I'm going to use ODIN to update to Samsung's official I9300XXEMD2_I9300OXXEMD1_I9300XXEMC2_XEO.zip ROM.
I'm already using the Stock ICS which came with the phone (brand new, but unlocked). So essentially I'll just be updating to a new version of an official ROM from Samsung.
I have already taken steps using KIES, to backup the call logs, SMS's, contacts, and APPS.
These are all items which are stored on the internal 16GB (I believe) please correct me if I'm wrong?
I would like to ask:
1) Will this ODIN flashing process effect any data on my external SD card? (I obviously don't want to lose any of it)
2) And, will I be able to use KIES afterwards, to return all my old data (ie app settings, the APPS themselves, call logs, SMS's, contacts etc) to the phone's 16GB memory?
Hopefully simple questions :fingers-crossed:
Thanks again.
The ODIN process doesn't wipe your phone as far as I can remember so everything should still be there (downloaded apps, SMS, call log etc).
Hopefully someone else can clarify this who has used it recently...

Thanks for heading me in Odin's direction
I haven't gotten round to doing the update yet.. and considering just hanging on until samsung release their official 'non-leaked' JB s3 update.
I'm still in the dark as to why my update options / legal information are greyed out though..
Does anyone know why?
I'm still in the dark as to why my update options / legal information are greyed out though..
Does anyone know why?
usual reason is a mismatch in the phone codes shown to KIES .
Orange logo means its an Orange phone and based upon the OP i would suggest that its an Orange France phone originally . It may have had firmware modifications or been a return phone or even a grey import .That would explain wrong codes no update path .
jje
'Mismatch in phone codes shown to Kies'
Are you saying Kies is expecting a certain code from the phone?
(Presumably derived from its serial number or something) - I don't know what a 'phone code' is.
I never had a doubt this phone has been messed with.
Presumably then.. the warranty might have been void (technically) since the day I bought it.
Since the firmware has been messed with?
If you have a mismatch in the Phone and CSC Kies will tell you that you can't update when you connect it as its trying to update that wont be the problem.
Your baseband and build are defiantly Orange so you need to flash the latest Orange France version to keep warranty but would guess that if it doesn't have Orange bloatware on it then at some point its been rooted and the bloatware wiped, in which case you want have a warranty
The latest France Orange firmware is phone I9300XELLA csc I9300FTMELL1 from sammobile site but if you want non branded then you need Open Europe OXA or UK & Europe BTU, the one you mention XEO is Poland although it will work for you its not really the one you want but the choice is yours.
You don't need a rooted phone to use Odin but any update will increase your flash count you can zero this by using triangle away from XDA if you want.
EDIT :- Just noticed in your first post the version is from May 2012 that you currently have so is this phone previously used.

I've been using my phone since 7 months, i even rooted it 5 months ago without any problem. I never changed its ROM, it's still running on ICS. When the Samsung official software notification came on my phone, i would postpone it to 3 hours later everytime. One day before my phone bricked, it would boot several times consecutively. Yesterday morning, my phone was fine, the alarm rung, i even checked my whatsapp, in the afternoon, i found it on the boot logo, i waited for the Samsung logo to appear but it would just stay there. I'm able to go in download mode, it says:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: GT-I9300
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: No
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
It won't go any further, no buttons apart from the power button would work.
I tried to go on the Samsung updates website to look for a firmware but i could not find my country (Mauritius).
Is the the "Region" important while choosing a firmware or can i just choose a firmware for any other country?
I tried installing I9300XXEMC3_I9300NEEEMC1_I9300XXEMB6_HOME.tar.md5 on my phone through Odin but it would fail on the very first stage (see attachment). I guess this file was not right...
I tried downloading other OMEGA WinRar files, but it contained only folders and other stuffs, i could not find any file with .tar extension.
Can somebody please tell me how do i fix my phone?
Please send me download links of .tar.md5 files and instruct me how to install it. I'll be very grateful to you
i don't mind loosing all my pictures, apps, songs and other files on my phone. I just want my phone to be repaired because i'll need it soon.
Thank you for answering.
It sounds like sudden death check the stickied thread in general, think it's a warranty job good luck

ouch
i had this problem,
heres how i sorted mine out,
i went to sammobile.com and downloaded .sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=GT-I9300&pcode=O2U#firmware[/url]
take both sim and sd card out the full factory wipe,
then installed it via odin (make sure you have latest version)...it might have been luck for me but its how it worked
fingers crossed
let me know if its worked
By reading your post and the info presented, looks like you are in download mode instead of recovery, that's why no other key but power will work. In your screenshot of odin looks for me that you don't have the usb drivers installed correctly or the phone is not in download mode.
Good luck

You probably have the Sudden death :/ You should've updated it to jelly bean... Only way is to change the motherboard , read the sticky in general section for more info.

Try downloading latest or custom firmware and save it to your extcard using card reader. Then try to root again your phone. Then flash the firmware (Custom or not) through custom recovery.Your problem doesn't make me nervous at all I've experienced bricking my phone much more than that.
You mean to say that i should download a firmware, then save it on an SD card which i insert in my phone...
And after that i root my phone again, right?
But as soon as i'm in download mode, my phone says:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: GT-I9300
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: No
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
No buttons would work after that
So i won't be able to access my firmware...
What do i do?
Please help me
i'm desperate :crying:
thank you.

Download mode is not for flashing from SD card .
Download mode you flash a stock rom tar via Odin .
If that fails its a service centre repair job .
jje
it didn't work but thanks anyway
my phone is rooted...will i benefit from the warranty?
i heard that rooting a phone voids its warranty...
i tried flashing some ROMS...none of them works :crying:
i even tried rooting it again...still unsuccessful
Now on download mode, my phone says:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: GT-I9300
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: Yes (2 counts)
CURRENT BINARY: Custom
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
Do i still benefit from the warranty?
i heard that rooting a phone voids its warranty...

[Q] software update keys not responding

when i check for software update in which i click updates(check for updates) this key is not responding, means k neither it says no new update available nor it says latest firmware already installed,i am running 4.1.2 on my GT I9300, so is it device problem or something else that i dont know,so plz solve my issue if possible
In settings, about device, status, do you have 'modified' in Device Status?
If yes, then you have modified your device in some way and will no longer received OTA updates.
This and much more information is in the sticky guides over in the general forum - suggest you go and read the basics.
reply to the aforementioned questions.

No it does not show modified device. Means k when I press the update button it does not sho anything.nothing like new updates, modified updates. Its likebbuttons is responding same way like when will press android version button 4.1.2 it is also not responding but this keys when you press many time it shows ester egg android after sometimee pressing of the button but the update button is not responding and shows nothing. And I have made factory reset twice as my cell hanged and frezz but I have done it in servixe center not manually.hope u get my query
It sounds like your firmware is damaged or corrupt. Either flash a full stock rom via odin (read the guides in general forum, stickies on how to do this) or take it to a service centre and let them do it for you.

Ok u may be right but I want to know k if new firmware will installation will resolve my problem by xda or through service center or when new update of 4.3 will come to my device whether I will be offiically updating or not? And if if can be update without doing anything else at present through service center or Samsung smart cafe? So what to do now to go for flash the firmware right now or wait till next 4.3 official installation from there means k is it like that k I can upgrade official or not when comes official updates.
What is K???
Choices .
One flash stock rom from sammobile or xda via Odin .
Update will be the same method to 4.3.
Two update via Kies
Three update via OTA if not working factory reset your phone .
Four take to a Samsung service centre .
