[Q] software update keys not responding - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

when i check for software update in which i click updates(check for updates) this key is not responding, means k neither it says no new update available nor it says latest firmware already installed,i am running 4.1.2 on my GT I9300, so is it device problem or something else that i dont know,so plz solve my issue if possible

In settings, about device, status, do you have 'modified' in Device Status?
If yes, then you have modified your device in some way and will no longer received OTA updates.
This and much more information is in the sticky guides over in the general forum - suggest you go and read the basics.

reply to the aforementioned questions.

No it does not show modified device. Means k when I press the update button it does not sho anything.nothing like new updates, modified updates. Its likebbuttons is responding same way like when will press android version button 4.1.2 it is also not responding but this keys when you press many time it shows ester egg android after sometimee pressing of the button but the update button is not responding and shows nothing. And I have made factory reset twice as my cell hanged and frezz but I have done it in servixe center not manually.hope u get my query

It sounds like your firmware is damaged or corrupt. Either flash a full stock rom via odin (read the guides in general forum, stickies on how to do this) or take it to a service centre and let them do it for you.

Ok u may be right but I want to know k if new firmware will installation will resolve my problem by xda or through service center or when new update of 4.3 will come to my device whether I will be offiically updating or not? And if if can be update without doing anything else at present through service center or Samsung smart cafe? So what to do now to go for flash the firmware right now or wait till next 4.3 official installation from there means k is it like that k I can upgrade official or not when comes official updates.

What is K???
Choices .
One flash stock rom from sammobile or xda via Odin .
Update will be the same method to 4.3.
Two update via Kies
Three update via OTA if not working factory reset your phone .
Four take to a Samsung service centre .

You will need to flash a stock rom using odin you can get a stock rom from here, it gives all the instructions on the page so read it all. Also you could go to samsfirmware and use one of the stock roms from their.
Unfortunatley it didn't work, still is Lightening ROM . . . I downloaded XXKH3 and phone rebooted fine, Still SKY GO fails to work and says 'SKY GO is not supported on Rooted Android Devices'
Any tips on getting my phone back to factory spec/stock?
Arggggh
If I remember correctly, Sky Go checks the ro.secure flag. Custom ROMs usually ship with ro.secure set to value of 0, so you can play with your phone as you like; however, some "secured" applications don't like this (banking apps, your Sky Go, etc).
Try a CF-Root 5.4 kernel (or newer), as it comes with "fake secure" - the flag is reported as "1" to apps, but ADB thinks it's "0".
Sorry Vaxxi I'm a noob and dont understand alot about this sort of stuff, to be honest I installed Lightning Rom because i though it looked good . . . .
Just want to get my phone back to how it was out of the factory so that Sky Go App doesnt think the phone has been rooted!
goto this website, create an account. Then download the ROM.
Once downloading has finished (I hope you have Odin) flash via Odin3 BOOOMMM!!!!
You're done...
Thanks for the reply Familyguy, i did open an account earlier and my baseband version I9100XXKH3 is no longer available . . . . is it ok to try the latest firmware S7500XXLC2?

At best, you always download the newest firmware. But you have to make sure, that it is stable. So, stick with Gingerbread, or ICS 4.0.3. If you find 4.0.4 on the website, leave your fingers from it. It just about works on my GNex...
But, basicly yes. Always stick with the newest firmware
should be work like the guys above me expained already. recovery -> wipe everything -> format system and stuff to be sure everything is clean -> flash newest GB firmware -> done and unrooted!

Sorry for interrupting, but:
When you flash a ROM, with Odin (a stock ROM) superuser is already deletd... Because the whole ROM get's overwritten. So don't worry about CWM, that says by, bye, aswell...
Just flash the ROM, and you will be stock. Put a jig in, aswell, and noone will notice, you mucked around with the ROM...

Assuming you're running stock & have never messed with (rooted/run non stock firmware) the phone, try a factory reset/wipe in the first instance (boot into recovery), then try the update again.
You could flash a stock ICS rom manually with Odin, but be aware if you bork it in the process (very unlikely/small risk, but still a risk nonetheless), you'll likely not get it fixed under warranty. Get the PC version of Checkfus if you want to go down this route (search for it on here/Google), this will enable you to download the update manually, then flash it following the instructions here.
Ton need at least 40% to install an update.

actually i have rooted my phone before 2 months but now it is not rooted... i just want to install official ICS using kies or through OTA ...don't want to root again.
Then take your pick. Do the reset & try it again (make sure you've got at least 40% battery; I think that's what JT meant), or do it manually with Odin. Or try the first option, then the 2nd one.
Up to you.
Also, if you can't find the firmware you need with Checkfus, search Samfirmware or here
Edit after your edit - In that case definitely the first option. If it doesn't work & you don't want to do it manually, take it to a Samsung service centre & ask them to put the latest firmware on it for you.

Ok, after reseting there is no update available on my phone when i try to update using phone.
OK. Have you ever flashed any other stock firmware on the phone ? I have two theories about this 'upgrade' - one; if you've flashed stock firmware for other regions on your phone, there's may be some issue with the CSC (even if you're currently running correct firmware for your region) preventing you from getting OTA updates successfully. Also, the update you saw may have been not for your region, because your CSC is messed up , it may have tried to pull an update for the region whose firmware you had on the phone previously. And when you did a reset it might have somehow fixed the issue with the CSC, and there is no update for your region. Conjecture, but hard to know exactly without knowing the history of the phone & exactly what you've done it.
Two; the size of the update sounds a bit strange. I would have thought it would be bigger than 197MB. Even zipped, I have a carrier branded ICS firmware and it's huge (>700MB). That you were able to download it, yet there was nothing on Kies is really strange.
Go into settings/about phone & tell me all the details you have in there. Also tell me everything you've done with the phone since you got it so far as rooting/flashing other firmware goes (details of kernels, roms, etc). And we'll see if we can shed a bit more light on things.
And one other thing, in your last post you say there's no update on the phone, have you checked Kies again. If not, have a look.

no update on kies either.
I have also used this method toinstall official stock firmware http://www.technetinfo.in/mobile/mobile-software/stock-gingerbread.html
let me quote my own message while i was having problem with CSC.
k i did factory reset and wipe all data now it doesn't show "that device doest not support software upgrading via KIES" but firmware info is totally different now, it is suppose to be (KSA) not (XSG).

one thing more i would like to mention here is that before rooting....KIES showing
PDA:KJ2 / PHONE:KI4: / CSC KJ1 (KSA)
now it's showing
PDA:KJ2 / PHONE:KI4: / CSC KJ1 (XSG)

FIXED BY CHANGING CSC CODE
OK. Given all that, then it's obviously a CSC issue. Which means either it showed an update was available for the wrong region, and now that CSC issue has been resolved. Or there is an update for your region but your CSC is messed up so it can't get the update.
I've had a look at Checkfus, and the stock rom you're currently running is the latest for Saudi Arabia (GT-I9100LKAKSA -I9100JPKJ2/I9100OJPKJ1/I9100XXKI4/I9100JPKJ2) which was released on 25/10/2011.
So I'd say that update you saw was for another region, and the factory reset you did fixed whatever issue there was. There are no updates for your region, put it that way.
Edit - Unless it's some kind of minor carrier specific update ? That could explain the relatively small size of the one you saw. I guess you could find this out by contacting your carrier.
Thanks a lot MistahBungle, i really appreciate your help.
Now i have changed my CSC code from (KSA) to (JED) and now i'm getting official update from kies. Just curious about changing CSC, is there any negative effect on my phone in future by just changing CSC code?
Given you're getting OTA updates OK, probably not. Normally if you change your CSC to a different region, you often have problems getting OTA firmware updates. If it's working for you, it's obviously fine.

not sure about OTA but on KIES it is showing my firmware info correctly, i mean i can get updates through KIES without any issues.
suppose if i want to change my CSC back to original one (KSA) then what will happen?
As long as you can get it via Kies you're set. And even if you couldn't, it's simple to download the firmware with Checkfus & flash it via Odin. That's what I'd do if I were on rooted stock, for example (but I probably wouldn't be in any event).
I don't know. Try it & find out. Yes, I'm serious. I hate stock firmware, it's rubbish, and haven't run it since the first week I got my phone. So I honestly don't know.

[Q] Reverting an i9300 on Vodafone to warranty compatible

My i9300 has started doing a random freeze and reboot thing, so I have been reverting it to factory to see if that cures it, or so I can return it if need be. I know the information that I want is all here somewhere, but I can't seem to find the last couple of pieces.
I have used Triangle Away to reset the counter to 0.
I reapplied the stock ROM using mobile Odin, which got rid of everything except SuperSU and MobileOdin itself. I uninstalled SuperSU, but couldn't get rid of MobileOdin, but now appear to have by loading the Vodafone stock firmware from Sammobile - the file was I9300XXELLA_I9300VFGELL3_I9300BUELL1_HOME.tar.md5, and loading that on using Odin (as the PDA file) on my PC. Mobile Odin now seems to have gone.
I can't seem to do a system update - it just sits there for ever looking for a system update, but at least it doesn't come straight back and say that I am custom and can't upgrade.
But...
When I go into the bootloader (Vol Down, Home and Power) and then press Vol Up, I still get the Odin bootloader. Isn't that a giveaway that I have been playing around with it. I can't remember what the pre-Odin bootloader looked like, but how do I get that back on it?

Doh. Thank you very much. I couldn't see that particular gem of information anywhere, possibly because it was so obvious that it didn't need stating.
I can relax a bit more then. The only oddity that I have noticed in Touchwizz is that in the app drawer, the lower right hand spot in the grid is always blank, rather than being filled by an app.

Solution for [System status - Custom] to [System status - Official](WARRANTY PURPOSE)

Hi, for warranty purpose or some other purpose..to go back to stock rom.. triangle away app is used to reset flash counter..after using the app I got this
Current binary : no
Custom binary : samsung official
System status : CUSTOM
I've searched so many forums and googled so many times to find a solution
For making System status : official(Coz warranty will still be void)...so many people said to do a factory rest and some told to wipe data/cache in cwm.. but none worked..
Finally after switching on my mobile after the procedure to stock rom and resetting flash counter...I went to ABOUT DEVICE/SOFTWARE UPDATE and CLICKED CHECK UPDATE(should be connected to net) I got the message DEVICE REGISTERED...Voila System status changed to OFFICIAL and also in settings/about device/status changed from modified to normal
I searched for hours and hours for this but finally got a solution out of luck..thought this would be helpful for someone like me..who want their warranty back
PS: This worked for me dont know if it works for others..im just sharing my luck..now I got my warranty back and replaced my product (hardware issue)..Thanks

ya i agree there are some guides...but in every thread.. solution to change system status custom to official is this
'12. Once the phone is up go to Settings -> About Device -> Status, check if the device status says NORMAL... if it does, then the device is unrooted if it still says MODIFIED continue...
13. Reboot into Android Recovery by holding Vol UP + Home + Power till you see Samsung Galaxy S3 displayed on screen...
14. Do a factory wipe and wipe cache then reboot
15. The phone will be rebooted and can be sent in for warranty '
but it didnt work for me....ihve seen so many people replied.. asking .. my system status is still custom even after wiping ....these questions were asked in chainfire thread too...
so i thought this would be helpful....anyways you are the senior member u know better..
Thanks, satya - I have been struggling to get the phone back to its original state for warranty purposes, and your post was the only thing I could find that gave me the solution to that final piece of the puzzle. On my Galaxy S3, I didn't have an option for "Check Update", so I did an "Update Firmware" and then an "Activate Device". Between these two, it worked.
Although there's a lot of information out there about restoring your phone to factory state for warranty purposes, I have to say that it is scattered and often not very user-friendly. Here are the concise steps that I constructed, which hopefully will be useful to someone else in the future:
Pre-requisites:
1. Flash Clockworkmod (CWM) recovery onto the phone.*
2. Root your phone.*
3. Install TriangleAway on your phone.**
4. Download your stock ROM from samsung-update.com and extract from zip file to your hard drive.
Then:
1. Run TriangleAway on phone and flash counter to 0.
2. Turn off phone.
3. Reboot phone into Odin download mode (hold volume down+power+home when off) and connect USB cable.
4. Run Odin*** on PC, click PDA, and select tar/tar.md5 file of the stock ROM you downloaded.
5. Click Start to flash stock ROM and let it run its course (about 5 minutes).
6. Boot into download mode. If system status=custom, then:
a. Reboot normally
b. Go into Settings->System Update and do Update Firmware
7. Your phone now has stock recovery, stock ROM, no root, counter=0, and status=normal.
NOTE: You must reboot into download mode immediately after running TriangleAway. If you otherwise reboot the
phone normally, it will reset the counter upon reboot to 1 and you will need to run TriangleAway again.
* I used Samsung GS3 Toolkit to flash the CWM recovery and root. You can accomplish both at the same time by choosing "2" (root/unroot options) from the main menu, and then "3" (ALLINONE) from the next menu.
** TriangleAway can be downloaded from Google Play Store for a small fee, or you can find it online for free, download it, and install to your phone using an APK package installer (you can find in Play Store for free).
*** Odin is included in the aforementioned Samsung GS3 Toolkit (look for the executable in the directory it was installed to), or you can download it on your own.
Good luck everyone.

Yep and here is the root of the problem multiple posts on the same subject .
Some of those multiple posts are wrong or just another way of the old method . Other posts carry out the same task but with unnecessary steps added .
Plus noobs don't bother to learn the basics so the basic instructions like flash stock rom are a puzzle .

Hello, I made the mistake of rooting my phone a while ago and now it needs a battery and jack connector replacement. I flashed the latest stock firmware via Odin(could install via SmartSwitch too but I have a bad internet connection and I was afraid of messing up). When in download mode everything shows OFFICIAL, knox warranty app shows 0x0(valid) and the recovery is the normal one. No root trace via app detection. Still, System Status shows Custom. :| Would there be any problem? Never mind guys after rebooting it again after writing this post it shows official and I am just standing here like... wtf happened???? xD
Is there a way of doing this to my note phone that stuck in boot loop after samsung update Only screen I can get into is the download screen. Binary says Samsung official but system status says custom. Sprint accused me of rooting the phone.

I'm asking you cause your a senior member and all. I know pretty much everything there is to know about samsung devices but mine has got me thrown right now... Galaxy Tab A7. Rooted it many times but not long after root it will give me the blue error screen on boot saying the device cannot boot due to being flashed with an unofficial firmware and shows that the issue is the vbmeta file. Only fix is to flash stock firmware. It will not boot otherwise... however even after flashing the newest firmware and the past 3... I've tried them all... the device still shows that it is custom under the settings/device status menu. I've reflashed using its PIT file with repartition, cleared EFS option, NAND erase... still always shows custom and won't do updates or anything. However in Downlad mode it shows Samsung Official.... Any idea what's up with that? I would have used combination file but the new security regarding that is another nightmare of its own...

[Q] Complete restock?/ Flash counter reset/ Downgrade I9300XXELLA

Hello,
I have a SGS3, model number GT-I9300, Baseband version I9300XXELLA, once i got my phone i directly rooted it using CF-ROOT, and because of that the flash counter was triggered, then after i updated my phone using Kies as i was no longer able to update using OTA because its statues became "modified" i had to re-root again, this triggered the flash counter one more time.
now i need to send my phone to samsung due to hardware malfunction, so i tried using TriangleAway, then i un-rooted the phone using supersu, but after i restarted the phone its status in Settings>about device>status>Device status> is "modified", and i noticed that when i use check for updates it stays checking forever (a whole night) and never finish, and when i go to download mode it says the following:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: GT-I9300
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: No
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
i was advised to reflash my phone with an official ROM and that i did using "Samsung-Updates.com-GT-I9300-BTU-I9300XXELLA-1356163678" ROM and ODIN 1.85, but yet its the same wither in the device status, checking update takes for ever, and information in the Download Mode!
Can someone please tell me how to reset everything back to its original state wiping all the data on the phone, in detailed steps please!
what i want is to have my phone back as it was saying "normal" in the device status, and official in the SYSTEM STATUS, even if this means downgrading it to an older android version like ICS.
By the way my phone was bought from samsung italy, not attached to any service provider.
Thanks in advance.

now i need to send my phone to samsung due to hardware malfunction, so i tried using TriangleAway, then i un-rooted the phone using supersu, but after i restarted the phone its status in Settings>about device>status>Device status> is "modified", and i noticed that when i use check for updates it stays checking forever (a whole night) and never finish, and when i go to download mode it says the following:
Thanks in advance.

the fact that you gave me those links means that my question was note clear
i saw those threads and did as they say! but they are not well maintained and they are full of unanswered questions, i actually started to answer some of them in there, that's why i started a new thread, but i guess it was a wrong idea,
if i may just one question, i am unable to locate the right stock rom for baseband I9300XXELLA, and Italy region. all the italian roms in samsung-updates are with different baseband or same baseband but different region! sammobile site appears to be offline,
sorry for the mistakes again!

My experience, so far, is that if you use Triangle Away (2.60 in my case) then should be an option that says "Allow tracker to run".
It has to be enabled, and once you check it, reboot inmediatly.
The status should be "normal" now...
If it doesn't work, try to reset the binary counter with that option already checked...
And another thing!
You must have stock kernel/recovery in order to make things work properly!
