Assuming you're running stock & have never messed with (rooted/run non stock firmware) the phone, try a factory reset/wipe in the first instance (boot into recovery), then try the update again.
You could flash a stock ICS rom manually with Odin, but be aware if you bork it in the process (very unlikely/small risk, but still a risk nonetheless), you'll likely not get it fixed under warranty. Get the PC version of Checkfus if you want to go down this route (search for it on here/Google), this will enable you to download the update manually, then flash it following the instructions here.
Ton need at least 40% to install an update.

actually i have rooted my phone before 2 months but now it is not rooted... i just want to install official ICS using kies or through OTA ...don't want to root again.
Then take your pick. Do the reset & try it again (make sure you've got at least 40% battery; I think that's what JT meant), or do it manually with Odin. Or try the first option, then the 2nd one.
Up to you.
Also, if you can't find the firmware you need with Checkfus, search Samfirmware or here
Edit after your edit - In that case definitely the first option. If it doesn't work & you don't want to do it manually, take it to a Samsung service centre & ask them to put the latest firmware on it for you.

Ok, after reseting there is no update available on my phone when i try to update using phone.
OK. Have you ever flashed any other stock firmware on the phone ? I have two theories about this 'upgrade' - one; if you've flashed stock firmware for other regions on your phone, there's may be some issue with the CSC (even if you're currently running correct firmware for your region) preventing you from getting OTA updates successfully. Also, the update you saw may have been not for your region, because your CSC is messed up , it may have tried to pull an update for the region whose firmware you had on the phone previously. And when you did a reset it might have somehow fixed the issue with the CSC, and there is no update for your region. Conjecture, but hard to know exactly without knowing the history of the phone & exactly what you've done it.
Two; the size of the update sounds a bit strange. I would have thought it would be bigger than 197MB. Even zipped, I have a carrier branded ICS firmware and it's huge (>700MB). That you were able to download it, yet there was nothing on Kies is really strange.
Go into settings/about phone & tell me all the details you have in there. Also tell me everything you've done with the phone since you got it so far as rooting/flashing other firmware goes (details of kernels, roms, etc). And we'll see if we can shed a bit more light on things.
And one other thing, in your last post you say there's no update on the phone, have you checked Kies again. If not, have a look.

no update on kies either.
I have also used this method toinstall official stock firmware http://www.technetinfo.in/mobile/mobile-software/stock-gingerbread.html
let me quote my own message while i was having problem with CSC.
k i did factory reset and wipe all data now it doesn't show "that device doest not support software upgrading via KIES" but firmware info is totally different now, it is suppose to be (KSA) not (XSG).

one thing more i would like to mention here is that before rooting....KIES showing
PDA:KJ2 / PHONE:KI4: / CSC KJ1 (KSA)
now it's showing

FIXED BY CHANGING CSC CODE
OK. Given all that, then it's obviously a CSC issue. Which means either it showed an update was available for the wrong region, and now that CSC issue has been resolved. Or there is an update for your region but your CSC is messed up so it can't get the update.
I've had a look at Checkfus, and the stock rom you're currently running is the latest for Saudi Arabia (GT-I9100LKAKSA -I9100JPKJ2/I9100OJPKJ1/I9100XXKI4/I9100JPKJ2) which was released on 25/10/2011.
So I'd say that update you saw was for another region, and the factory reset you did fixed whatever issue there was. There are no updates for your region, put it that way.
Edit - Unless it's some kind of minor carrier specific update ? That could explain the relatively small size of the one you saw. I guess you could find this out by contacting your carrier.
Thanks a lot MistahBungle, i really appreciate your help.
Now i have changed my CSC code from (KSA) to (JED) and now i'm getting official update from kies. Just curious about changing CSC, is there any negative effect on my phone in future by just changing CSC code?
Given you're getting OTA updates OK, probably not. Normally if you change your CSC to a different region, you often have problems getting OTA firmware updates. If it's working for you, it's obviously fine.

not sure about OTA but on KIES it is showing my firmware info correctly, i mean i can get updates through KIES without any issues.
suppose if i want to change my CSC back to original one (KSA) then what will happen?
As long as you can get it via Kies you're set. And even if you couldn't, it's simple to download the firmware with Checkfus & flash it via Odin. That's what I'd do if I were on rooted stock, for example (but I probably wouldn't be in any event).
I don't know. Try it & find out. Yes, I'm serious. I hate stock firmware, it's rubbish, and haven't run it since the first week I got my phone. So I honestly don't know.

Seeing as I`m still a relatively noobish poster I`m unable to ask this question in the relevant thread. I`ve just debranded the phone following the 8 step guide but I had issues following step 8 where you change the CSC code. I couldnt quite figure it out so step 8 never got followed. As a result, despite losing the Three branding on the phone I now have a phone that displays the CSC as "unknown" and may well explain why Kies cannot pick up the firmware version on the phone. If I follow step 8 and key in *#272*<your IMEI># on my phone it then shows me a screen headed "Preconfig" with "Sales Code" underneath and "H3G" in the box to the right. Underneath is a radio button thats deselected. if I press to highlight it then press "install" at the bottom of the screen I keep getting an error saying "Must be THREE chars".
Can anyone shed any light on this and give me any hope of rectifying?
Will I need to manually input the Three APN settings once I successfuly change the CSC code?
Thanks in advance. I have spent ages scouring the web but there`s not a great deal of info out there about the CSC part of the debranding process.
id like some more info on how important the csc is too, im got told it hold some carrier information but i dont know if that is true or not.
the reason you cant pick on is probably as since debranding you havent flashed the csc you need, you could find the one you need for your firmware over in the dev section.
Cheers for the reply, interestingly i`ve just re-flashed the phone and this time it is showing my CSC as XEU. Even so, I still cannot follow step 8. When I input that code including my IMEI in it shows XEU but when I press "install" it gives me the same old error of "Must be THREE chars". So not sure whether its worked or not and what diference it makes. At least Kies now shows something in the firmware field, even if it doesnt show what I was expecting. Hopefully someone can assist with this at some point later.

Hi there
If it says XEU after inputting the imei then it's working fine. You're not supposed to have to press install at this stage. Also to make sure it's working fine, I always boot into recovery mode. If you look down the code as recovery is loading, it will say which csc is being used/implemented (xue etc). Always reset data in recovery after rom flash from (especially from different csc.
I've had issues in the past when I flashed back to T-Mobile (after originally flashing ke7 stock) and then back again to T-Mobile. When I re-flashed back to stock after this, I couldn't get it to change from tmu (t-mobile) csc back to xeu, no matter how I flashed it. In the end the only way I could revert csc back to xeu was using the jig I had purchased. Apart from resetting the customer binery counter, it seemed to reset other settings, as once I had done this, I was able to install stock ke7 with xeu csc.

Does this mean I should now be able to see the latest Firmware update available in Kies?

Yes you should be able to see the latest available update for your csc via kies. Although kies seems much slower to get the updates. It's much easier to use Odin. Most people update by this method. It's really easy and pretty safe.

Cheers Redbullman. I can get into Kies now but on the firmware information section it says "Current Firmware Version : PDA:KDD / PHONE:KDH / CSC:KD1 (H3G)"
Its not telling me there`s a firmware update available so I have a horrible feeling something`s still not quite right but I`ve flashed it twice now and done 2 factory resets.
Would it be easier to find the stock KE7 kernel (forgive me if I`m using the wrong words) in Odin to flash it that way? If I can manually do it then I`d rather do it that way. Only problem is I`ve not yet found any tutorials on doing that, unless its the same (mostly) as the tutorial for debranding, except using a different .tar file (KE7).
I saw a guide pertaining to branded firmwares, but didn't see a guide regarding changing various countries firmware permanently to the Uk firmware. If there is guide on this subject, could you please direct me to it?
1. If you have a unlocked firmware from one of the various countries, how do you flash to the UK unlocked Firmware?
2. Additionally, if and when you are able to flash to the UK unlocked firmware what needs to be changed so that your phone is recognized as a UK unlocked firmware phone (to always get the latest updates)?
3. The latest update on Kies just released, this is available for UK unlocked phones?
4. If the UK firmware always gets the updates first, then why doesn't everyone update their phone to the UK firmware?

All firmware is unlocked flash firmware via ODIN .
Details in the STOCK rom post in dev section .
3. The latest update on Kies just released, this is available for UK unlocked phones?
All Phones that match product codes .
4. If the UK firmware always gets the updates first, then why doesn't everyone update their phone to the UK firmware?
Because the UK has never got the firmware first you are misinformed .
Samsung release firmware by location its sent to the network providers who then choose to update or not they send it to Kies .

Thanks. Also:
1. Doesn't Europe in general usually get the lastest updates first?
2. Is there a carrier that you can flash your phone to so that you will always get the latest updates?
3. Cant you flash your phone to a different country firmware? Isn't the advantage of this that you would always get the firmware first if that particular area usually has them first?
4. Carriers in what particular area get the firmwares first?

No

Yes if your supposition was true .
In which case Europe firmware .
4. Carriers in what particular area get the firmwares first?
None they all get them at the same time from Samsung and they decide if and when to release .
Most XDA users flash latest firmware stock Samsung via Odin from dev section stock roms or Samfirmware.com. That gets the latest firmware .
Current latest is KG3 .

Appreciate the help. Few more Q's
1. I have seen at least one person that bricked his phone using Odin? How rare is that? Isn't there an safety advantage of taking a chance with flashing your phone to Europe firmware and always getting your firmware from Kies?
2. The KG3, is that a beta leak or the final release version?
3. If your phone is unlocked, would KG3 eventually be available through Kies? What's an estimated time frame?
4. Have any of the updates in the past been rolled out OTA and not through Kies? If so is this for carrier locked phones only?
Thanks,
AC

Safety Odin v Kies Odin about 1% chance of bricking phone rising to 100% if not following instructions .
KIES about 15% chance of a failed firmware update
return to Samsung for a fix .(or use Odin as thats what Samsung will use )
2. The KG3, is that a beta leak or the final release version?
Its not a Beta .
3. If your phone is unlocked, would KG3 eventually be available through Kies? What's an estimated time frame?
Eventually 3 weeks to 3 months time scale or nobody really knows .
4. Have any of the updates in the past been rolled out OTA and not through Kies? If so is this for carrier locked phones only?
OTA only just switched on July and testing inplace though it does seem to have started its carrier roll out for some phones .
Should be both Kies and OTA but we dont really know yet .

Very Helpful thanks. ?
1. I've heard if you update to KG3, you have to wipe your phone in the process. What is the equivalent to wiping on the I9100? Does it mean that your everything will be wiped clean including settings, apps, miscelanous files, and videos? Of just your settings will be reset?
3. Does the process of upgrading to KG3 include having to root? Because of there being more steps involved because of a wipe, is there any reason not to just root your phone? Is your phone rooted?
2. If KG3 does include the process of having to do a "full wipe" equivalent to a format, and then is there any reason not to just update with the most recommended and stable custom roms?
3. Do you have KG3 on yours? If so do you have the full KG3 or partial, please explain? Do you have one of the custom roms
I've thanked you on every post and hope everyone else does the same.

ALWAYS from day two .

No you could use one of the roms no problem .

Current is Cognition rom 1.2 KG2 based later release 1.3 is KG3 but i have not bothered to update to 1.30
Also Villain Rom both in dev section .
If i update to a new rom as in new builder i do a full wipe and reinstall my apps as a matter of course and then would not update again just for minor upgrades in the rom . Preferring to wait and see if their is any real reason to upgrade .
Recovery to warranty state is a matter of flashing a stock Samsung rom or the correct branded rom for the phone even an old one . Resetting the custom rom counter via the usb recovery jig and Samsung non the wiser .
Lot of users rush in to putting a custom rom on the phone followed by multiple custom roms and never bothering to read the instructions end up with a bricked phone . but a bricked SGS has a 99% chance of recovery by flashing a stock rom back .

Thanks for all of your help. Comment/Question
I went ahead and updated to the No wipe KG3, posted by Intratech and found here:
Frankenstein non-wipe package:http://www.multiupload.com/G3X5DJSUBK
I noticed that Intratech also posted the Stock XXKG3 kernel: http://www.multiupload.com/7LEXO574OT
Password: [email protected]
1. Is there any advantage of installing a wipe vs no wipe package? Will a no wipe package now or in time leave remnants of installations and eventually not give you a clean installation?
2. What was the intention of the posting of the Kernel? What is it for? Doesn't the NO Wipe package already include this?
I had not known exactly what to expect (even with the title no wipe). So I backed up my apps with Super Manager and App Backup. I also backed up my APN'S with APN Backup and Restore and APN Manager. I flashed with the instructions by Intratech at: (which was painless) at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Afterwords I found this was an easy and painless process. All of my apps, settings, and APN's were still there and intact (didn't even require the backups as I presumed).
3. I notice that I am able to just use the windows explorer to move files directly to my i9100 now instead of having to use Kies. Was this always the case? I am not sure because I had crashing when I tried to do this before. I do notice however, that when I move supported files directly to the device through explorer that works fine, but when I tried to move an unsupported movie format (ts movie file) to the i9100 it crashes and won't let me do it? Is this because my I9100 isn't rooted that it is restricting me from doing this?
4. What are the advantages of rooting for you?
Hi there can't post in Development so here will have to do...

Well if you want to root flash a cf root kernel via odin from the original development thread.
Also check out infratechs thread to see if he has this firmware there incase you need to revert back, once rooted just make a backup via CWM either via recovery mode or using the CWM app that comes with cf root.

Firmware info

Generic XEU
But I thought that when you rooted your device it had to be identical, I could flash Ice Cream, but then I wouldn't have anything to back up to if my device blobs?
O2 say's I shouldn't have this firmware and so does Samsung, Kies actually said..
"Your device does not support software upgrading via kies"
I's that odd?
Don't worry about it, if you've got an o2 model just flash the latest UK firmware for o2, again in infratechs thread or maybe sammobile. You can flash o2s CSC anyway that will give you back the splash screen and such.
For now if you want to root, cf root is the easiest then flash away using CWM any of the plethora of roms available.
I suggest you flash a stock rom from Infratechs thread so you can update to the latest if you want LA2, then use CF Root to root. Then if you want ICS just flash that via CWM.
You can also use Checkfus (search on here) to find/download the latest firmware for your phone/carrier.

As you said JJe, it is a CPW rom, and I knew it was an old one, but it's odd that CPW are sending refurb phones out with such an old ROM on it. I've decided to bite the bullet and go with the original ROM that I got with my first phone...
Product Code: GT-I9100LKACPW

Bypassing this and going for...
I9100XWKI4/I9100CPWKH1/I9100XXKI1/I9100XWKI4 (2.3.4)
This is the original firmware plus KIES update to 2.3.4! I know that CPW were sending NEW phones out with this, so this will have to be my BackUp If my hardware blobs.
I'ts a shame I couldn't find the original ROM/Kernel. Checkfus did come in handy after all.
Many thanks for your help and patience you 3.
Now I just got to cope with FBI shutting down MEGAupload, as most of the Rom's etc reside there.
hey ya, lets say someone i know (wink ;D) is employee at carphone warehouse, and to tell you a fact, the repair centres tend to care very little if youve changed the firmware, at most they will charge you £10 to 'upgrade' the software to the latest official release, if you cant find it, i really wouldnt worry to much, most staff dont even realise what the yellow non stock firmware triangle is, though i would be sure to get rid of it just incase you get one clever clogs but for the most part, no big worry really

Make sure you have wiped data/cache and dalvik cache via recovery (If you have CWM recovery) otherwise pick a rom from the stock rom thread that says wipe, flash it via odin, then flash the new rom you want.

Turns out that it's incompatible with my sim card, the phone works fine when I remove it, but as soon as I put my sim back in I get the same error?
CF-rooted fine,CWM etc ok, but still this error, might have to try another ROM
Sussed It!
Flashed to XXI1, then flashed the CF-Root Kernel and wiped it, looked like veyka, it was my Backup that I was Restoring, because now it works fine with the SIM card, something from the Backup from that ROM was incompatible with XXI1!
Got just a DATA backup on CWM from main backup, will see what I can restore safely!

Trial and error eh?
Thank you again. (buttons pressed.)
Just got the GT-I9100 International version for my daughter (we are on AT&T). What do I need to know before checking and installing updates? I started to check for updates but it asks for my location and I read somewhere about people who downloaded U.S. version (in the U.S.) and installed it on their non-U.S. phones and they screwed up the machine. I believe the phone is from Germany (the initial language when we turned it on was German).
Thanks.

There is no version of the i9100 sold in the US. What you probably read about is someone who flashed firmware or a ROM for the i777 (or some other different variant model) to an i9100. The i777 is the variant sold by AT&T. The i9100 is sold internationally.
As long as you stick to flashing things meant for the i9100, you should be fine.
Also, make sure of the exact model. There is also the i9100G variant, which is incompatible to the i9100 in terms of firmwares, kernels, and ROMs.
Just be careful, and if you intend on flashing anything, only use things meant for that exact model phone.
Thanks. I meant OTA update. If I check OTA update, isn't it getting updates from Samsung US or something like that?
BTW, these are the specifics of this device. I am also considering rooting it. Not sure what would be the best way though (I only have experience with rooting my I777) l.

I don't believe you'll get any OTA updates on the i9100 while in the US. I haven't, in over a year. Besides, you can turn it off. (OTA)
Aint the updates controlled by CSC?? From the pic it seems to be XW -> UK i guess? So you should still get UK updates ...
Rooting is simple (My guide is to skip rooting and jump straight for custom rom, but the steps to root are the same)
1. Download any version of CWM from here
2. Get desired rom (kernel too if you want)
3. Place everything in Externel SDcard
4. Boot into stock recovery (Power+Home+Vol up)
5. Use stock recovery to flash CWM
6. Backup Current stock rom
7. Wipe the usual
8. Flash Custom rom (Or just kernel)
9. Reboot
10. ?? Profit ??
Now you got Custom rom or Kernel + Full stock rom backup (can always get stock rom from sammobile if you lose it)

As I said, I have had this phone for over a year, bought from the UK, and never had an OTA update. I am in the US, and am an AT&T customer.
Thank you both!

Did I understand correctly? This is just a temporary CWM? How do I get a permanent CWM?

By flashing a kernel that has it included. You can do this with a CWM flashable package from within the temporary CWM. Recovery is part of the kernel package on this phone.
This is where it comes into play that you make sure you flash a kernel meant for the i9100.
Recoveryception bro
Not sure why I cannot find stock in sammobile.

Reason I am asking about update is that the phone keeps 'suggesting' to check for Software Update and when I start the update process it asks me to choose which country I am at. So I am wondering what will happen if I download an update OTA. I read somewhere that it comes from Samsung US and Samsung US only have updates for US models.

Do I need specific kernel for LPI (current is I9100XWLPI), or any kernel for I9100?

Depends. A custom kernel like Siyah will do. I don't think OTA works on this phone in the States.
I'm not a fan of all the advice that you're getting. The advice being given to you is for those who want to run custom firmware. You mentioned wanting the OTA (which won't likely happen for you as a user residing in the US). Simply download Samsung Kies and install on your desktop.
http://www.samsung.com/us/kies/
Once it detects your phone plugged in via USB, it will tell you which firmware you're on, and what the most recent firmware for your model is. If the most recent is newer than what you have, it will prompt you to update.
EDIT: See attached image for a screenshot of my Kies w/my SGS2 i9100.

Well, at the end of the day I do want to root and maybe even install a custom rom (trying to convince my daughter that it's safe ). I did root and run Shostock on my I777, but I don't have any experience with the I9100.
I don't necessarily want the OTA update, I was just worried that if I try to update it (currently 4.0.3...not sure if there is a newer version at all), the OTA will put something that does not belong there. As I said, I read somewhere about Samsung US downloading US version that doesn't work with the I9100.
If you want to root and rom, this is the right place. If you or your daughter are more comfortable with a stock ROM, get Kies. It's not going to download the US firmware. Here's why.
-you plug it in and it detects the phone, literally saying, "Hey, I have an i9100 here, not an i-777!"
-It looks for your current firmware, literally saying, "Hmm, I see UK 4.0.3 here, let's see if there's more current UK firmware."
-It then finds the more current firmware for what is currently installed, "Egads! There's a 4.0.4 UK firmware!"
Anyway, there is in fact a more recent firmware for your device (4.0.4) and it contains numerous bug fixes. I'd recommend installing Kies and running that update. Then, if you haven't done much with the phone yet, factory reset it to clean out any left over garbage. It will give you a smooth experience. And for what it's worth, I've had no desire to root/rom my SGS2. On my Incredible, not only did I root/rom, but I had my own project (Liberation) that I ran on these very boards. With the SGS2, there's been no need for me to do that.
Some like the "pure google experince"
So indeed we got an update through Kies. Thank you.
BTW - it is a German phone. It came with, and re-installed with the update, some German links/apps (I removed them when we first started it). For some reason the updated stock is not shown in the Kernel version as it did before (see pic).
Question: I am using TB on my I777. Maybe I'll skip the root on her phone, she will be going to college and I won't be around to fix things if needed . Is there an app to backup user apps without root?

Since you are on german firmware, I'd recommend learning how to use ODIN as your next step. Switch it over to UK firmware. All apps are in English. Once you use Odin to switch over to a different country's firmware, Kies will only detect your device as being from the new country, and only look for compatible firmware within that country. This is something that you can do that won't require root, won't risk voiding your warranty (if you follow the simple instructions), and can be a precursor to root/romming if your daughter wants to go that route.

Thanks jaykresge. I am familiar with Odin. As I mentioned - my I777 is rooted. What I don't know though is how/where to get the correct UK firmware to replace the one I have and "UK'ing" the device
Hey all,
Had my S3 for about 10months.
HANDSET DETAILS:
* Unlocked GT-i9300 (running GiffGaff sim)
* 16GB White, running Stock Touch-Wizzed ICS 4.0.4
* Baseband: I9300BVLE4
* Kernel Ver: 3.0.15-554502-user

WHAT I'M TRYING TO DO:
I am not trying to root this phone (YET!), I am just trying to use Kies to upgrade to JB.
All the 'legal information' in the Settings menu is 'greyed out'. I cannot select, or update OTA.
I will probably get to the CM / custom ROMs sometime but for now I just thought I'd do a simple (I thought) easy upgrade to JB.
Kies recognises the phone, suggests I do a back-up (which I did), and then attempts to download a 3000mb install package. At this point, it throws up a dialog box showing a bunch of 'square characters' - the kind of thing you see if you don't have a language installed on your OS. (which is XP by the way).
It's an error for sure, as after closing it (OK is the only option), the download process loops as it asks me again 'do I want to backup before upgrade'. So I'm getting nowhere.
I'm not sure why Kies has such a problem with my phone.
If it's any use, I can say that this was bought brand-new, unlocked, from a retailer website, though upon boot it displays an Orange logo, and certain parts of the menus (although very few) were in French by default. I've registered the phone with Samsung on their site successfully so that's fine. I put in a QUERY for them to help but it's been over a month and nothing back so far.
So I thought I would come to the expert village and see if I can get some help.
-I'm hoping it's okay to ask about Official updating here and not completely boring ( ! ) as I'm aware this is a land of great rootery and customisation! which I think is great by the way :good:
Thanks to anyone that can help!
regards,
SkEvol (newbie)
Have a look in the stickies about how to use ODIN (its not difficult to use).
Then, I would advise you flash the latest official Samsung firmware from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610
Ensure you follow the ODIN instructions properly and make sure Kies isn't running when you use ODIN.
This will get you onto the latest version of JB to be released by Samsung...

Hi there Mike,
Thanks for the reply, while I'm quite happy to use some ODIN to do this (I don't mind a learning curve), I'm just a bit put off by the disclaimer "Using ODIN can change your bootloader to show that the system is MODIFIED and may increase your ODIN flash count. This may void your Warrenty".
-my phone is still under warranty and I would rather avoid breaking the warranty if at all possible.
Are there any other options?

I wouldn't worry about that tbh.
As your phone hasn't been rooted it shouldn't be an issue.
Also, there are ways to change the system flag back to 'official' using Triangle Away but I don't think you'll need to.

Thanks again Mike,
I'm going to use ODIN to update to Samsung's official I9300XXEMD2_I9300OXXEMD1_I9300XXEMC2_XEO.zip ROM.
I'm already using the Stock ICS which came with the phone (brand new, but unlocked). So essentially I'll just be updating to a new version of an official ROM from Samsung.
I have already taken steps using KIES, to backup the call logs, SMS's, contacts, and APPS.
These are all items which are stored on the internal 16GB (I believe) please correct me if I'm wrong?
I would like to ask:
1) Will this ODIN flashing process effect any data on my external SD card? (I obviously don't want to lose any of it)
2) And, will I be able to use KIES afterwards, to return all my old data (ie app settings, the APPS themselves, call logs, SMS's, contacts etc) to the phone's 16GB memory?
Hopefully simple questions :fingers-crossed:
Thanks again.
The ODIN process doesn't wipe your phone as far as I can remember so everything should still be there (downloaded apps, SMS, call log etc).
Hopefully someone else can clarify this who has used it recently...

Thanks for heading me in Odin's direction
I haven't gotten round to doing the update yet.. and considering just hanging on until samsung release their official 'non-leaked' JB s3 update.
I'm still in the dark as to why my update options / legal information are greyed out though..
Does anyone know why?

usual reason is a mismatch in the phone codes shown to KIES .
Orange logo means its an Orange phone and based upon the OP i would suggest that its an Orange France phone originally . It may have had firmware modifications or been a return phone or even a grey import .That would explain wrong codes no update path .
jje
'Mismatch in phone codes shown to Kies'
Are you saying Kies is expecting a certain code from the phone?
(Presumably derived from its serial number or something) - I don't know what a 'phone code' is.
I never had a doubt this phone has been messed with.
Presumably then.. the warranty might have been void (technically) since the day I bought it.
Since the firmware has been messed with?
If you have a mismatch in the Phone and CSC Kies will tell you that you can't update when you connect it as its trying to update that wont be the problem.
Your baseband and build are defiantly Orange so you need to flash the latest Orange France version to keep warranty but would guess that if it doesn't have Orange bloatware on it then at some point its been rooted and the bloatware wiped, in which case you want have a warranty
The latest France Orange firmware is phone I9300XELLA csc I9300FTMELL1 from sammobile site but if you want non branded then you need Open Europe OXA or UK & Europe BTU, the one you mention XEO is Poland although it will work for you its not really the one you want but the choice is yours.
You don't need a rooted phone to use Odin but any update will increase your flash count you can zero this by using triangle away from XDA if you want.
EDIT :- Just noticed in your first post the version is from May 2012 that you currently have so is this phone previously used.
