[Q] Car Phone Warehouse - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there can't post in Development so here will have to do...
Ex SE Satio user moved over to android SGS2 and got one late last year from CPW (Car Phone Warehouse), Unlocked and with cpw stock firmware, I think it was XEU or one of the general ones, I rooted it using odin and was happy as larry, until the proximity chip failed, so I rehashed it back to Out Of Box and sent it back.
Great Then then sent it back with a different firmware, I'm still getting my head together with this but I'm sure I cant find it? and there is hardly anything online about it.

I wan't to root my phone, but can't find anything about, I could flash a different ROM on but then I wouldn,t be able to Back up if the hardware fails.
Thank You

I also failed to state that its...
2.3.3 and Kies say's "THERE WILL BE NO MORE UPDATES FOR THS PHONE."
???

Well if you want to root flash a cf root kernel via odin from the original development thread.
Also check out infratechs thread to see if he has this firmware there incase you need to revert back, once rooted just make a backup via CWM either via recovery mode or using the CWM app that comes with cf root.

Hi mate and Thank You for your quick reply. I've scoured the threads and the closest I've found is..
XWKDD
Firmware info
PDA:XWKDD
PHONE: XXKDH
Build date: 26/04/2011
Generic XEU
But I thought that when you rooted your device it had to be identical, I could flash Ice Cream, but then I wouldn't have anything to back up to if my device blobs?
O2 say's I shouldn't have this firmware and so does Samsung, Kies actually said..
"Your device does not support software upgrading via kies"
I's that odd?

Don't worry about it, if you've got an o2 model just flash the latest UK firmware for o2, again in infratechs thread or maybe sammobile. You can flash o2s CSC anyway that will give you back the splash screen and such.
For now if you want to root, cf root is the easiest then flash away using CWM any of the plethora of roms available.
I suggest you flash a stock rom from Infratechs thread so you can update to the latest if you want LA2, then use CF Root to root. Then if you want ICS just flash that via CWM.

You can also use Checkfus (search on here) to find/download the latest firmware for your phone/carrier.

Its not O2 firmware its CPW firmware CPW is the clue
KD was a very very old firmware May 2011
What has the firmware to do with O2 its not an O2 phone .
UPGRADE CHOICES
One ask CPW service for an upgrade
Two wait for KIES upgrade if CPW upgrade KIES .
Their should be a CPW firmware and most definitely an O2 Firmware in the branded providers rom section .Or via CheckFus that should give you a backup of whats on the phone .
Carrier branded .

As you said JJe, it is a CPW rom, and I knew it was an old one, but it's odd that CPW are sending refurb phones out with such an old ROM on it. I've decided to bite the bullet and go with the original ROM that I got with my first phone...
Product Code: GT-I9100LKACPW
Version: Android 2.3.3
HIDSWVER: I9100XWKE7/I9100CPWKD1/I9100XXKE4/I9100XWKE7
Bypassing this and going for...
I9100XWKI4/I9100CPWKH1/I9100XXKI1/I9100XWKI4 (2.3.4)
This is the original firmware plus KIES update to 2.3.4! I know that CPW were sending NEW phones out with this, so this will have to be my BackUp If my hardware blobs.
I'ts a shame I couldn't find the original ROM/Kernel. Checkfus did come in handy after all.
Many thanks for your help and patience you 3.
Now I just got to cope with FBI shutting down MEGAupload, as most of the Rom's etc reside there.

hey ya, lets say someone i know (wink ;D) is employee at carphone warehouse, and to tell you a fact, the repair centres tend to care very little if youve changed the firmware, at most they will charge you £10 to 'upgrade' the software to the latest official release, if you cant find it, i really wouldnt worry to much, most staff dont even realise what the yellow non stock firmware triangle is, though i would be sure to get rid of it just incase you get one clever clogs but for the most part, no big worry really

Just my luck flashed new ROM and i'm gettin "The process.com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" every 5 minutes when i'm navigating through menus and that.

Make sure you have wiped data/cache and dalvik cache via recovery (If you have CWM recovery) otherwise pick a rom from the stock rom thread that says wipe, flash it via odin, then flash the new rom you want.

Turns out that it's incompatible with my sim card, the phone works fine when I remove it, but as soon as I put my sim back in I get the same error?
CF-rooted fine,CWM etc ok, but still this error, might have to try another ROM

Sussed It!
Flashed to XXI1, then flashed the CF-Root Kernel and wiped it, looked like veyka, it was my Backup that I was Restoring, because now it works fine with the SIM card, something from the Backup from that ROM was incompatible with XXI1!
Got just a DATA backup on CWM from main backup, will see what I can restore safely!
Got Yellow Triangle, no Jig. will try SuperOneClick method
Trial and error eh?
Thank you again. (buttons pressed.)

KIES update to 2.3.5 failed, can't boot phone nor get into recovery mode, help!

So I tried updating my phone through KIES since I knew 2.3.5 was available for my phone, and it failed to update, so I tried to go into recovery mode, but I don't get that far, I only get to a screen where it shows a mobile phone and a computer wired together and the wire has a warning sign (like if it has no connection to a PC).
The phone is bought through Telenor in Sweden, if it needs a new firmware or something, can I get some directions?

Since it's only 2 weeks old and I can't survive without a phone, I want to give it a try to do it myself (since I guess this is exactly what they will do themselves anyways, right?)
Any help finding the right one? I checked http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928 and didn't find Sweden under "Telenor", but found Norway. Not sure if there is a "Nordic" version.
Found I9100XWKI4 on samfirmware.com, which I guess is I9100 (Galaxy S II) XW (Swedish) KI4 (2.3.4) http://hotfile.com/dl/130670448/ecd9926/I9100XWKI4_I9100XXKI1_I9100DBTKH1.rar.html
Which is the right version for me I believe, correct if wrong, now what should I do with the finished file? I've learnt that I should use ODIN and make my phone go into download mode, however, the rest is quite "what?" for me.

Same thing happened to me!
I would recommend just flashing CM7 or other custom ROMS, now that you're going to have to mess around.
Download lightning ROM + ODIN (it's in the same thread), flash it, should work fine, and you also have a rooted phone. From there on, try things out, before deciding to go back to samsung official Roms.
My experience with the HD2, is that "support" for custom Roms seems to be way better (and Kies sucks!)
Hope you're lucky and everything works out.
Just don't get nervous
(PS: Download mode is vol down+home+power)

Downloded the STOCK KERNEL and it contained Kernel_I9100XWKI4.exe (which I extracted which gave me Kernel_I9100XWKI4.tar), should I put this in PDA in ODIN and just press "Start"?
Also, how long time would you estimate it to take?
[EDIT]: checked the italian video in that thread and downloaded XWKI4 OXX MultiCSC (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) and then I do as he and put that in the PDA slot in odin and press start, now let's see if anything happens.

[Q] DO I need to change my CSC

Hi
Ok so I was with o2 on KF3, I've now flashed stock samsung firmware from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
I'm using the most up to date XEU one which is
XWKI4
Firmware info
PDA:XWKI4
PHONE: XXKI1
Date: 14/09/2011
Android 2.3.4
All o2 stuff has disapeared. I've read through the forums on changing the CSC and am confused.
Do I need to change it to XEU now to be able to update through kies? currently it comes up as 02U.
The firmware flash didn't reset my phone everything was as before. Which was nice, however I want the option to get the updates through kies or by flash.
Am i right in thinking I would have to change my CSC for this?
I see views but no replies - anyone no the answer or is it a smarties job?
Tried to change it anyway but phone wont let me dont even get a keyboard. Stuck it on clipboard selected all on 02U then pasted XEU ontop all i got was an error to say it had to be 3 characters any clues?

So after some more internet scouring and no help here it appears i need to flash a multi csc fw then change csc then reflash the one i have now......... Can anybody verify if this is correct or not?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
To use kies again you will have to flash back to the original firmware,in your case carrier firmware, that came with you phone. If your firmware is not official or doesnt match your product code then kies will say that "this firmware cannot be updated" although your phone will still connect. The CSC firmware you have is a mono-csc package. If you try to change it or install a custom ROM on top it will say "CSC-UNKNOWN" because for custom ROMs and other changes to be done there needs to be at leats 3 CSCs in the firmware. The best thing you can do if you want to stay on this firmware is stay with XEU for your region or if you want flash the OXA multi CSC pack.It has varios CSCs to choose but i cant remember if it has XEU.You could always flash a custom ROM that has a multi CSC package built in to it like Omega ROM which im using but this of course means you cant use Kies.So the choice is yours.Stay with XEU if you want to keep to stock or OXA-multi CSC if you want to flash a custom ROM or back to your original carrier firmware to keep using Kies.
EDIT: Theres nothing Kies can do for you that XDA cant.Im in Spain on XXKI4 (Poland 2.3.5.) running Omega XT v3.0 ROM which has a EUR CSC for Europe built in to the ROM itself. So Ive got a Europe CSC thats works fantastic with a version of android that isnt even released in my country and a ROM thats fast and stable that gives me 2 days battery life with 3G on all day with moderate use.
thanks
Hi
Thanks for that, I guess I just wanted the best of both worlds, to be able to flash official roms from XDA as they come out for XEU but also have the ability to do the same through kies - ODIN was painless enough so as u say there's nothing kies can do for me that xda can't in that respect
Eureaka
So I factory re-set my phone from the recovery menu.......bang csc now reads xeu so it would seem to be that flashing the firmware as above won't sort csc on it's own unless a multi csc, but it doesn't matter which route u pick multi/single csc fw package you have to factory re-set to change it.
At least I know if I ever need to send the phone back to 02 I reflash, factory re-set and everything is as should be, although will the binary counter hint i've been flashing?

For the counter just buy a jig on ebay or maybe from a store if you can find one that sells them.Ebay always has them.It wipes the counter clean so Samsung dont know that yourve been playing around cos if the counter isnt at 0 then your warranty is void.Cost 2 bucks. The latest 2.3.5 official firmwares, also available here on XDA,have a new bootloader which is un-wipeable but there is an odin flashable old bootloader which allows you to flash the latest version and still wipe the counter.you can read about it here at the bottom of the Frankenstein section bellow XXKI3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
I also wanted the best of both worlds but at the end of the day all official kies firmwares you can find here from the link i just gave you anyway and flashing custom ROMs and back to stock and custom and stock again could also put your IMEI in danger of being corrupt.
EDIT: Heres a good IMEI backup method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546
Wasn't aware of that risk! Will have to get a jig as if phone busts it will have to go back via my insurance company and I'm sure they will check!
Also I've got Odin 4.42 now not odin 3 1.85 does anyone know how to use it to flash the GS2 as it's options are slightly different e.g one tarball support - dedicated option rather than just pointing the pda field at the single tar.
also the reset time has a value of 300 rather than just being a tick box. Other than that it's pretty much the same

About the new Odin im not sure.If your not sure then its probably a fail-safe bet to stick to v1.85,at least you know it works and messing around with things that your not sure about could end up with a bricked phone.Ive been flashing for donkeys and im happy with v1.85.If it aint broken....so ill stick with it.A jigs good to have just incase. If something happens you need to wipe the counter before sending it back.An IMEI backup is a MUST HAVE.Not really if your only flashing original firmwares but if you want to flash custom ROMs then YES its possible that something could go wrong.Happens not to often,to some people never, but if you dont have a backup then there is no way you can get your original IMEI back without sending it back to the service centre and that will cost you.No IMEI means on conection at all.No 3G,HSPDA or even signal. Not good at all
Cheers for the advice will stick to 1.85 it works lol yeah i stick to official fw interested to know how imei can get fried though

[Q] Odin, Firmware and Warranty?

Right, my dad has a GS2 and it is crashing a few times a week, before trying a warranty claim we want to try sort it ourself. So we're going to try flash/update it.
Current phone info:
Android vers 2.3.3
Baseband 19100XXKDA
PDA i9100XWKD6
PHONE i9100XXKDA
CSC i9100CPWKD1
KERNAL [email protected]#2
KIES says no updates and tbh I think CPW have abandoned it and it will never see an update.
Anyway will flashing an official firmware with Odin kill the warranty? Will it add to the counter?
As there is no other firmware out for the CPW model, I'm thinking of going for
I9100XWKJ1 O2 UK
as that's the network it's on anyway so will have the settings and O2 barely brand their firmware anyway.
Will change it from CPW to O2 UK affect the warranty? This is essentially changing the product ID so it won't match the serial/IMEI if Samsung check?
It's my dad's phone so he doesn't care about cutting edge or rooting, all he wants is stability and to preserver the warranty. Both these things are very important. I can handle the flashing etc, just not sure about the versions.
Thanks.
Best advice I can give you is, if you've never run custom firmware on it & have only been running stock, don't try and 'fix it yourselves'. Send it in for warranty service.
If you flash any firmware in Odin it will add to the flash counter, so you'll need a jig to reset if you ever send it in for warranty service. Some people report having their phones repaired under warranty regardless of whether they've reset the counter or not, and many report they've been made to pay. Obviously you're taking a risk if you don't reset it first.
That depends on whether CPW do their own repairs, have a 3rd party do them to their standards/with their rules or whether they pass them on to Samsung/a Samsung repairer to fix them. You're only going to know this if you ask CPW I imagine (unless someone who has put a warranty claim in with CPW in similar situation to you replies to this thread).
Now to firmware versions. I've had a look with Checkfus (PC version), this enables you to find/download the latest firmware for your phone/carrier/country that you'd normally get from Kies. It's telling me the latest available firmware for CPW is: 9100XWKI4/I9100CPWKH1/I9100XXKI1/I9100XWKI4 from 16/9/2011, which is obviously different to your current firmware. I'd be very surprised if this isn't later than your firmware as well.
As this is an official firmware update, I'd be very surprised if you sent a phone back with this firmware flashed (and nothing else like rooting, etc done to the phone) & your warranty service got knocked back on the basis of the firmware on the phone.
Obviously there's a very small risk of bricking your phone everytime you use Odin, but if you follow the process & your PC doesn't crap itself halfway thru or something, you should be fine ;-)
Sooo...Find/download the PC version of Checkfus (search for it on here/Google), you should be able to get the firmware I mentioned above.
Thanks, so even flashing an official firmware with Odin adds to the counter? Damn.
I can just see CPW leaving it stuck on 2.3.3 forever even when ICS is out. Annoying.
Thanks for the reply. Will have a look into Checkfus now.
FYI They will put the lastest for your handset best use a CFW which has a service center or just take it into any Sammy service center outlet..
Cheers will get him to take it in instead then. Is it worth trying a factory reset?
If it was my phone I'd be running a custom rom, but he won't lol.
Anyway whilst this problem will solve the crashing problem (hopefully). It still won't solve no ICS ever (most likely).
Yeah just spoke to him, we're not taking it in. When his Desire HD broke, he didn't have it for 3 months, and it was send off by CPW 5 times and came back with a different fault every time, reboot loop, no service etc. And it took an email to the CEO of CPW to get them to accept it was useless and give him the GS2 instead. We're just going to try a factory reset and complain about the lack of updates for a supposably generic unbranded phone.
PS: Backup your data and remove memory card before handing fone it for checks..
Sorry just updated the above.

the counter does not go up if you flash only firmware from ODIN.
on a custom kernel will trigger custom binary count to rise.
official is official. period.
A friends got a CPW GS2 on 2.3.4 so I'm going to do it myself I think.
Right I used CheckFus and get:

This extracts to:

What I do with this in Odin as all the guides have multiple files?
Not going to do it yet anyway, going to wait for ICS and see how that goes in a few weeks. Would just like to know.
Thanks.
*edit* Ok, I think I just put the .tar.md5 in the PDA box, what is the .dll for though?

No idea. You don't need it though. Just do as you say, i.e flash through Odin with the .tar.md5 file in PDA. If you have problems booting afterwards then restart in recovery and do a factory wipe/reset.

Official ICS failed to install after 12%

I went to software update and there is a 197mb update on my phone then i started to download and it downloaded just fine but after rebooting it is failed always at 12% and meesage comes up " update through kies or contact samsung"... on kies there is no update.
My phone is not rooted.S II I9100 from KSA.
anyone?
This is what exactly going on

Assuming you're running stock & have never messed with (rooted/run non stock firmware) the phone, try a factory reset/wipe in the first instance (boot into recovery), then try the update again.
You could flash a stock ICS rom manually with Odin, but be aware if you bork it in the process (very unlikely/small risk, but still a risk nonetheless), you'll likely not get it fixed under warranty. Get the PC version of Checkfus if you want to go down this route (search for it on here/Google), this will enable you to download the update manually, then flash it following the instructions here.
Ton need at least 40% to install an update.

actually i have rooted my phone before 2 months but now it is not rooted... i just want to install official ICS using kies or through OTA ...don't want to root again.
Then take your pick. Do the reset & try it again (make sure you've got at least 40% battery; I think that's what JT meant), or do it manually with Odin. Or try the first option, then the 2nd one.
Up to you.
Also, if you can't find the firmware you need with Checkfus, search Samfirmware or here
Edit after your edit - In that case definitely the first option. If it doesn't work & you don't want to do it manually, take it to a Samsung service centre & ask them to put the latest firmware on it for you.

Ok, after reseting there is no update available on my phone when i try to update using phone.
OK. Have you ever flashed any other stock firmware on the phone ? I have two theories about this 'upgrade' - one; if you've flashed stock firmware for other regions on your phone, there's may be some issue with the CSC (even if you're currently running correct firmware for your region) preventing you from getting OTA updates successfully. Also, the update you saw may have been not for your region, because your CSC is messed up , it may have tried to pull an update for the region whose firmware you had on the phone previously. And when you did a reset it might have somehow fixed the issue with the CSC, and there is no update for your region. Conjecture, but hard to know exactly without knowing the history of the phone & exactly what you've done it.
Two; the size of the update sounds a bit strange. I would have thought it would be bigger than 197MB. Even zipped, I have a carrier branded ICS firmware and it's huge (>700MB). That you were able to download it, yet there was nothing on Kies is really strange.
Go into settings/about phone & tell me all the details you have in there. Also tell me everything you've done with the phone since you got it so far as rooting/flashing other firmware goes (details of kernels, roms, etc). And we'll see if we can shed a bit more light on things.
And one other thing, in your last post you say there's no update on the phone, have you checked Kies again. If not, have a look.

I have used this guide for rooting http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-...t/482994-rooting-galaxy-s2-dummies-guide.html
but after trying 5 or 6 custom ROMS i just unroot my phone.

no update on kies either.
I have also used this method toinstall official stock firmware http://www.technetinfo.in/mobile/mobile-software/stock-gingerbread.html
let me quote my own message while i was having problem with CSC.
k i did factory reset and wipe all data now it doesn't show "that device doest not support software upgrading via KIES" but firmware info is totally different now, it is suppose to be (KSA) not (XSG).

one thing more i would like to mention here is that before rooting....KIES showing
PDA:KJ2 / PHONE:KI4: / CSC KJ1 (KSA)
now it's showing
PDA:KJ2 / PHONE:KI4: / CSC KJ1 (XSG)

FIXED BY CHANGING CSC CODE
OK. Given all that, then it's obviously a CSC issue. Which means either it showed an update was available for the wrong region, and now that CSC issue has been resolved. Or there is an update for your region but your CSC is messed up so it can't get the update.
I've had a look at Checkfus, and the stock rom you're currently running is the latest for Saudi Arabia (GT-I9100LKAKSA -I9100JPKJ2/I9100OJPKJ1/I9100XXKI4/I9100JPKJ2) which was released on 25/10/2011.
So I'd say that update you saw was for another region, and the factory reset you did fixed whatever issue there was. There are no updates for your region, put it that way.
Edit - Unless it's some kind of minor carrier specific update ? That could explain the relatively small size of the one you saw. I guess you could find this out by contacting your carrier.
Thanks a lot MistahBungle, i really appreciate your help.
Now i have changed my CSC code from (KSA) to (JED) and now i'm getting official update from kies. Just curious about changing CSC, is there any negative effect on my phone in future by just changing CSC code?
Given you're getting OTA updates OK, probably not. Normally if you change your CSC to a different region, you often have problems getting OTA firmware updates. If it's working for you, it's obviously fine.

not sure about OTA but on KIES it is showing my firmware info correctly, i mean i can get updates through KIES without any issues.
suppose if i want to change my CSC back to original one (KSA) then what will happen?
As long as you can get it via Kies you're set. And even if you couldn't, it's simple to download the firmware with Checkfus & flash it via Odin. That's what I'd do if I were on rooted stock, for example (but I probably wouldn't be in any event).
I don't know. Try it & find out. Yes, I'm serious. I hate stock firmware, it's rubbish, and haven't run it since the first week I got my phone. So I honestly don't know.

Need I9100PXXLSS firmware for restore on dead i9100p

Hi all,
tried to root my phone with jeboo_kernel_i9100_v1-2a.tar using Odin3 not realizing my phone was an I9100p (they look the same ,almost). Anyway it booted up but i had no signal guessing this was due to it being the wrong kernel? I then tried to flash to CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5 this gave me only a bootloader screen. I rebooted jeboo_kernel_i9100_v1-2a.tar and i can now use my phone again but without the signal, i do however have super user and CWM on my phone. Im thinking its probably best to give up so ive found the original firmware i need : I9100PXXLSS . unfortuently all copies seem to be on hotfile which has recently been closed. Anyone got this firmware they could send to me? Thanks.
try to search for I9100XWLSW_I9100XXMS2_I9100XEULS5_HOME.tar and flash that.
also you can visit sammobile, they provide good and updated firmwares
And where do you think the OP went to look for this firmware first ?
OP - Samfirmware are still in the process of migrating their stuff to Terra, they started with the most recent firmwares & are working their way back. Try AndroidFirmwares.net & Samsung-Updates.com; if they don't have what you need, you'll either have to flash something else or wait until Samfirmware have what you're looking for back up again. You don't need to flash the exact firmware that was on the phone to get it working again. If your aim is to root the phone & flash a custom rom, any firmware for any country/carrier will do (but don't use 4.0.4). If the intention is to simply go back to stock & stay stock, use any other rom for your carrier (again, stay away from 4.0.4 just in case you decide to root it or whatever).
