[Q] Refurbished TB, stuck on Froyo! - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, guys. I have a protection plan through best buy and just got my Thunderbolt back. They gave me a stock refurbished one, but this poses a few problems. Since the ICS update rolled out, I guess they pulled the OTA gingerbread update. And I'm not able to update straight to ICS, either. If I check for available software update, it says that there is none available.
So basically, I'm stuck on Froyo. Is there anyway I can somehow update to Gingerbread so that I can OTA update to ICS? I don't care that it's stock, I don't care that it might be difficult to root the new update at the time being. Or even just update straight from Froyo to ICS somehow?
I would even be satisfied with just a Gingerbread update. Froyo is way outdated and it's a pretty big step backwards. (Just before my old TB broke, it received the OTA ICS update.)
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Currently running HTC Thunderbolt
Android 2.2.1
Software Number- 1.70.605
If you need any more information, feel free to ask.
Thank you very much.

Yeah download and run the gingerbread ruu. Make sure you keep your froyo version totally stock. Once you're on gingerbread run the all in one tool to root, unlock and s off. Then flash the ICS radios and the official ota. If you don't want to root the just flash the gingerbread ruu and let it take the ota.

Is there somewhere I can find the RUU? Android police had links but all of the mirrors were dead. :/
Also, can you link me to somewhere that shows how to actually apply the gingerbread RUU? I've never dealt with this kind of thing before.

Preferably, yes.
This might sound stupid, but would I be able to just root my phone via revolutionary and then flash santod040's debloated version? I've used revolutionary on previous devices and it was very simple, but does it matter that I'm on Froyo?

I am currently having issues trying to do this. I tried ro change liquid ICS to the debloated version of the ICS OTA but It never worked out for me and the phone kept flashing blue screen and then rebooting or turning off. So I tried to unroot and convert back to stock but now when i try to install the new ICS rom i get the same problem with the screen turning blue within 2 minutes of starting and the rebooting or shutting off.
I cant OTA because I dont have a sim card that fits in my TB after i got my note2.

Sounds like you skipped the "You must install the ICS Radios/Baseband first" part of the install steps in the OTA thread OP.
You will continue to get a blue screen until you do so.

Back to GB from ICS Leak?

Hello all,
I'm a bit new with the Rezound, I was pretty experienced with the DInc2 and DInc before it, but I'm wondering something, I've looked around a bit, so apologies if I missed a thread, but I haven't found a straight up direct answer.
I have the latest ICS leak installed on my phone, I haven't rooted or s-off'd the phone just yet.... so what I need to know is:
1. Do I need to be S-OFF to flash the GB RUU so I can get the OTA when it releases?
OR
2. Will the phone still pick up the OTA with the leaked version of ICS since the leak is still an "official" build etc.
Hello, i'm also looking for same info, only i'm like a super noobie, I have an RUU, INSTALLED the HTC sync, which failed saying "waiting for boot loader" and that's all she wrote. So I think I need to do something to the boot loader, only what i'm not too sure.
Thanks.

Good question, not new to htc, I came from the tbolt, but if I run the latest ruu as a .img file through hboot, how would I get back to the stock gb rom that's currently on my rez, or will I be able to accept the ota while on the leak?
from my knowledge you will be able to ota to the release as long as it is a higher version that what the current leak is.
and if that fails you could s-off then gb ruu and then ota up.
I would like to go back to a nandroid backup of GB ROM that I had before I updated my firmware to the latest ICS leak. I can get it to restore & boot up, but I have no access to my sd card, so I have none of my apps. I feel like I've tried everything - nandroid helper, old firmware fix - but I don't know what to do next. Any suggestions?
In my trials to go back to a ginger bread RUU based firm ware, the process gets stuck at waiting on the boot loader, the phone is apparently not recognized. It is also not seen by the HTC sync.
the boot loader has been locked I don't know what to do next. It doesn't appear I can flash anything from fast boot menu.
Thanks for reading this far.

Hello and thanks for your time looking into this.
I am on ICS Leak - and need to go back to GB - the thing is good but the battery is atrocious and it heats like anything.
So I went ahead and put the thing in boot loader and then ran the RUU after exiting the HTC sync. Now I am getting Error 140 - Boot loader version Error.
Ah the pain this phone is causing
I have one more question: Do I have to do this every time I want to go back to a previous backup (one that I did prior to updating to the ICS firmware)? If so, I'm wondering if it wouldn't just be easier to go back to GB firmware......
Ver Change for Error 140 - Android SDK CMD???
According to my research - I need to down the version using hex editor via ADB Shell. Dear God !
I have tried / installed SDK/ and Java Dev Kit. No Go - is there an app I can do this on the phone itself?
Thanks

You will need s-off to revert but as of hboot 2.25 it doesnt accept flashboot commands. Kinda stuck til a patched hboot gets released if you took the 5/7 leak.

Thanks for looking into this - so my option is to wait for a patched hboot 2.25 or wait for another RUU with an Hboot higher than 2.25.
I was wondering if I could install CWM recovery - and just flash myself an GB ROM. My issues with this ROM are overheating and battery chomping. I wonder if that will be helped with a GB ROM - supposedly more mature and efficient. If this can be done can you point me to a thread?

Another 1/2Noob wants Rom'N help

I am only 1/2 a noob cause I did this back in June - I rooted & installed CleanRom. I am 98% sure I did not go S-off, I am not sure what firmware I am on - Screenshot attached - hope it is helpful. Actually, from your baseband version, you're on gingerbread firmware.
So you can either flash NeoMax with an old firmware patch, or update to ics with a RUU.
I recommend updating to ics firmware.

yep, as stated by other memebers you are runing GB with ICS firmware patch. which is fine but your radios are out dated.
you have 2 options at this point.
option 1 is to update to the .12 ruu, the one before the global release. this will give you the ability to flash newer roms that are not built off the global release, which there are more options to flash. this method will keep you s-on and still enjoy all the wonderful roms out there.
option 2 is to update to the global ruu. this will give you the most up to date rom s, but the downside is if you want to go back to an earlier build of ICS like neo's non global rom you will need to s-off the device.
let me know what option you want and i can help you with a mini guide on updating.

I think 3.14 based roms still work on global firmware as long as you use the right kernel.
But nonetheless, it's always best to be on a rom matching your firmware.

Man you guys rock!
What reason is there to stay s-on other than it is a bit trick to achieve s-off? I think everything becomes easier once I am s-off? So maybe I should just but the bullet (or the paperclip so to speak) and do it.
ASOP looks so interesting - when that is out and stable I most likely will want to try it - does that change what I should do in any way?

Would someone have the PG05IMG.zip for ICS ?

Hi,
I would like to install a non rooted version of ICS on my Thunderbolt.
This Thunderbolt is only being used for development, so I don't pay verizon on it, meaning the OTA doesn't work.
Would anyone know where I could find the PG05IMG.zip of the whole ICS update ?
Thank you

You would have to ask HTC, Verizon, (or Football? maybe) if you can find him for an RUU.
There was never one distributed that I have seen.
I compiled it together with 2.11.605.19 just as they would have on the device itself with the OTApkg.zip which contains many patch files.
There is no RUU that I have found yet, if I see one I will PM you a link for sure.
Closest you can get, is I can make a non rooted rom, but you would still need to be able to flash it.....so I don't know.

I'm looking for this too, as my bolt seems dead. I was on twisted's multi 1/13 but got frequent boot loops stopping at boot splash... So I tried to go back to stock but it still loops the same way. I was hoping the new OTA might do the trick.

Hey guys,
I'm not a developer and I've moved on from my Thunderbolt to a Note II meaning it has no more Verizon service. Do you think they'll be coming out with whatever file I need to get ICS on my phone without rooting? If there is no option, I can go the rooting route, but I would like to keep everything stock and this as a playtoy if possible.

The update didnt come in the form of an ruu. They made it a damn ball of patches that have to be applied to the stock .19 ROM. The ROM also cant have any system apps removed to make it work.

HTC One ROM deodexed

I have a question, if I download ARHD's deodexed version of the stock HTC One, will I be able to do OTA updates that HTC releases or not?
No. And every time I answer this question I wonder why that matters. As soon as there's a new ota someone builds a stock rooted rom you can flash.

thank you gunnyman. one more question, what are the advantages and disadvantages of ARHD vs ARHD deodexed version? I'm a noob and I am just trying to learn these stuff
Odexed roms are usually slightly faster but can't be easily themed. On the One the difference in speed is not noticeable. IMHO

I often wonder why people take the time to unlock the bootloader and root phones then all the sudden are concerned about a OTA that will most certainly often reverse the procedure you just took time to do.

Before I got hooked on ARHD, I rooted my One and stayed on stock rom for the following reasons.
1, rid of ATT bloatware
2. long press back buttom fix the 3 dot stripe issues
3. accessing tethering abilities

Gunnyman what if I just unlock the bootloader and did not touch anything else like rooting and flashing a custom recovery in such status will my machine be able to get OTA updates then?
Or once bootloader unlocked it changes the OTA allowance?
No I don't think so. Ota requires stock in every way.

I'm sure there are a lot of people like me who aren't used to this locked bootloader thing. In the past three years all I needed to do to root my phone is to run Superoneclick or some similar toolkit, and I was done. OTA update was never a problem, and if I did lose root after an update (sometimes it sticks), I just ran the toolkit again, or maybe I could try keeping it with rootkeeper beforehand. No problem. I rarely bothered with custom ROMs. Sometimes I flashed custom recovery, mostly to make a nandroid backup, but most of the time I ran stock + rooted without any other modifications.
As it turns out, with the HTC One I need to change this type of mindset, as rooting involves unlocking the bootloader *and* flashing custom recovery, which means I wouldn't be able to get OTA update right away.

[Q] Running .10 rooted with custom recovery, how do I get .12?

Hello, Im pretty new when it comes to rooting/custom recoveries on Android. Today I got the notification that AT&T had a software update so naturally I grabbed it. I re-booted the phone but loaded into TWRP and the update didn't take. I researched a little and came to find out that you can't do OTA updates if you're running custom recoveries. My question now is what's the best way for me to get it? Im running the stock rom from HTC, I'm just rooted and have no desire to run any custom roms at this time (Such as Cyanogen or the like). I've looked around and seen a few .12 custom stock roms, but I've also seen the leaked .ruu file. Not sure how to proceed in terms of getting the update installed. All I really want it is the updated firmware along with my current root access. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am pretty noobish when it comes to this.
Best way is if you are stock rooted now is to flash the stock . 12 rooted that scrosler posted. You can flash without wiping if you want

Hboot and radio haven't changed
Flash a rom, is reading that hard?

Thanks for your help, I'll grab that. Just wasn't sure if there was a difference or not...will flashing with a program like ROM manager not wipe the phone?
Just flash from recovery. It doesn't wipe anything

No it's not hard at all, but as I said I'm not looking for any custom roms..simply wanted to remain stock with the latest firmware upgrade. Not sure if the the leaked .ruu that came out a week or so ago would accomplish this or not.

Ahh ok, thank you. When you say stock rom do you mean cleanrom that was posted by scrosler? Or is there a different one?

So the only way to do this is a new Rom? I located the update .zip in twrpd but it hangs on install. Is there any way to simply run the update?

no your phone will not pass the update check
Even though I have the update file already have the update zip? Sorry, I'm incredibly new to android and don't really know how the ota updates function. I just hate to flash a whole Rom for a 20 mb update.

why? the space it will take up on the phone will be the same.
Update OTA's aren't structured like rom's that are packaged for custom recoveries.
Update OTA's also check to make sure the necessary parts are already on the phone so they only update the changed files. If you have altered your device in any way, the OTA will fail. This is a good thing. Less support calls from users whose updates fail.
