I have galaxy s3 with a straight talk micro sim in it (the bring your own phone sim, cost 14.00 bucks). I bought a used GTI9100M s2 and re installed the stock rom because I wanted to remove the root from it. when I install my sim for my s3 with the adapter from mini to micro, it gives me the ENTER NETWORK UNLOCK CONTROL KEY BOX. I though the GTI9100 was unlocked as it is the international version. So why is it asking for a control key?
I just want to be able to use gti9100 for a backup phone in case my s3 breaks. can I switch the sim back and fourth like this?
Thank you for any advice.
You need to unlock it. Being the international version doesn't mean it's unlocked per se.

Do I need one of those unlock codes off the internet that cost about 10 bucks?
Also, can you or someone tell me if by doing this I'm unlocking the phone or the sim card itself? I don't want to cause a problem with my sim when I put it back in my S3, thaks
You can unlock it by searching the forum. There's a thread about this resolved yesterday at q&a.
And no, it won't affect your sim card at all, it will only unlock your phone.

I want to thank you for your help first, but I'm wondering now why I bothered getting a GTI9100 international if I still have to unlock it. All I've seen people saying is, " just get an unlocked phone, that way any gsm provider's sim will work with it".
LOL, thought I had it figured out, then this..

International means that it's sold almost in every country (massive) and it's the base model for all it's variants.

I bought might and returned right away once I found out that unlocked version (come pre-loaded with froyo 2.2) is sold online @Dell.com. Luckily, my cousin in the states helped me bought one and I should be getting it end of this month.
Ok Rogers is now releasing the codes for the Streak. It's the only sure way I know of unlocking with code.
does the phone "Have" to unlocked to update roms?

The easiest way would simply be to root the Galaxy S2, try using the zerg rush exploit and when you get root, everything is quite easy to do.
The long method will be going back to an earlier version of ROM that is directly rootable. Head over to the Galaxy S2 forums, there are tons of info on how to do that.

Wrong forum, AND it sounds like he bought a device that is locked due to the PIN being mis-entered too many times. Possibly a stolen or lost device that someone hocked on eBay to try to make money off a poor, unsuspecting soul. (The OP, in this case, unfortunately)
This is what I am suspecting.
I am filing paypal case tomorrow morning and I don't want to be wrong side of law.

Smart enough to Post this in the right section, but not smart enough to not flash a ROM for a different phone from a different section of the forum...

Take this as a learning experience and learn to READ THE POSTS/FORUM SECTION BEFORE YOU FLASH ANYTHING that could potentially ruin your 500$+ smart phone?

lol, I don't blame the carriers and manufacturers now. I see so many people who hack there device. Mess it up and feel its right to commit FRAUD. You know not to say you were hacking it and ruined it because you know its not covered. I was like.. Byatch! What a mess! I should have researched this before buying... I looked it up, saw moto e was rootable and looked no further. Sucked in by the deal. Now I can't even return it. I've had it too long. I'm sure no one is even attempting it anymore. Think I might craigslist it for 40 and get me one to have a little fun with. Oh and not only that Tracfone has a site and under their name it says something like, when you have our phones you have the power. Ha! Straight talk just lost a long time customer. And this phone is just bloated out to the max with Google and Motorola CRAP! If someone out there in this mod world have this phone... Get it!!! Hit it hard! We can use this as a lab rat! So here's what I would believe, the CDMA version on straight talk is a cdma-v phone.. I assume that means its a Verizon phone, if I had a back up phone I'd be willing to try to root this one using the Verizon one click root app... Does anyone have any thoughts?

Is this the Version One Click root you were looking for? This is the updated version.
I found it via this article. Chrome detected the Verizon apk as a virus, but that's probably a false positive. The apk does come from XDA.
Blah blah blah, if you install that, I'm not responsible for nuclear war or bricked phones.
I'd try it tonight, but I need to be up for class/work tomorrow.
I don't have much to lose, although I do love this phone. Right now I use it as a server with VIM via Terminal IDE or as a web server with KSWEB. Although I recently converted an old 1.6GHz N270 Atom netbook to do the same thing, it's much louder and hotter, but way more powerful.
I'm just pissed what StraightTalk did to this phone. It's absolutely amazing, but those bastards had to ruin it.

Wait let me think.... sim lock is carrier related in that your device only allows certain sims. Therefore your device is locked down to a carrier, unless I've completely misunderstood!

You would have to contact the carrier, who's brand is on your device for the cell network unlock code.
