Was wondering if anyone else is having this problem as I haven't found anything about it which is quite surprising given how annoying it is.
Basically I've found that when I don't have a screen protector covering the lens of the camera, it picks up smudges very easily from the way I hold my phone and my finger touching the lens every now and then. This causes several very very noticable "ring" type things on the pictures I take where the flash is used. I'm a bit confused that HTC didn't address this issue as it more or less ruins any pictures taken in lower light conditions.
My solution so far has been to keep using a screen protector over the lens as this doesn't create the ring effect even if i purposely keep touching the lens with my finger. Does anyone know a solution to this though? I'd really like to not have a screen protector over my lenses as it probably ever so slightly degrades picture quality.
Your holding it wrong

I've had that problem with every phone i had so far. I've just made it a habit to give the glas a quick wipe with my shirt or whatever is available unless I don't care too much how the shot actually looks.

Maybe its where the lens is positioned making it more likely for me to touch it, but I've never noticed it on ny previous phones and certainly never to the extent it appears on this one. Doesn't look like there any other solution other than to give the lens a quick wipe.
How durable is the glass though? Can it scratch it wiped with a shirt, etc? Also, does anyone know exactly how much a screen protector deterioates the image?

Ah really?? What a ridiculous design flaw if they used a material that scratches easily considering how damm big that area is.
Well its obvious if you hold your phone with coins, keys and so. I tend to hold my phone in pocket with nothing else and since I bough my evo (early august 2011) I cant find any scratch even tiny. And yea - using shirt to clean lens is must-do before taking photo!
i have the same problems with it. but i also notice some scratches on the glass.

I haven't got a single scratch anywhere on the phone so far as I take very good care of it, but recently I've been wanting to use the camera without a screen protector over it. It sucks that they didn't factor in that if you make a mistake ONCE and put it in a pocket with keys or something, then it will get permanently scratched. If they insist or making a big fat area of removable glass on the back, then they should really put something like gorilla glass there. And anyway, it is still a major fail for HTC as with a screen protector on, these smudges do not create rings around the photo. It is the ****ty material they used that causes this problem.
Just to confirm though, are you saying wiping the glass with your shirt will not scratch it?
Well it would have bunch of scratches till now I use shirt to clean it everytime I take photo. Still "glass" that protects lenses isn't the same as one on front of the phone and its more likely easier to scratch - be aware of that.
Ps. I had motorbike accident just after buying phone... it was damaged a lot, and replacing "glass" parts at service is freaking expensive (especially front parts) so dont scratch it!
Not sure if my devices is refurbished or defunct, but when i press firmly on the sides of the INC 4g, I get a similar ripple effect like when you press on your LCD monitor too hard.
I came from the Inc 2 and the build quality on that device, i would have to say is a little bit better than the 4g. Anyone else experiencing this or is my device just faulty?
Mine does that too

It just says something about the build quality if pushing on certain area of the phone have adverse effects. That shouldn't happen

I have this same problem. After removing my back to insert my microSD card and reattaching the back, the case no longer closes completely, with casing immediately on the bottom of the volume rocker not latching on properly. In attempting to make it, I pressed firmly on the edge and it made my screen ripple slightly for a moment.
My EVO4G would ripple when I squeezed the sides. It was one of those thing you found out about through other people complaining. Yet after a while I never even noticed that anymore. I don't think I ever needed to squeeze a phone that hard either.
Just remember. Cell phones are like cars. They used to build them well with no features, now they build them cheap with the works.
Speaking of build quality....my phone is barely 3 days old...dropped it a short distance..way shorter than more of the hundred plus times I dropped my inc 2...and the damn screen shattered.....wtf..
Sent from my ADR6410LVW using xda app-developers app
It's not necessarily how far you drop it (although there is a point at which height just overcomes everything, call it terminal velocity hehe) but it's where it hits. Tempered glass is extremely strong, but it's also tempered. An extremely light tap from just the right direction will cause it to shatter.
A perfect example of this was a gas station I worked at back in college. The glass they have that protects the cashier from an explosion is about 3 inch thick tempered glass. It would withstand an explosion of huge magnitude. I watched them replace that pane of glass one day, when they removed it, they loaded it into the back of a truck and gave it a slight rap on the corner with a hammer and it shattered in the bed of the truck. They did this intentionally by the way

Take some black electrical tape, cut a strips about 1 inch long and about 2-4 mm wide. You will want to put them under the lip of the back case, adhesive side in, on the middle left, upper right(above the antenna not on them), top and bottom. if you cut them thin enough the case will snap back on and never creak,
I had todo this on my rezound too, they made these backs really flimsy to the point where they eventually won't snap back together.

If you are talking about the glue underneath the bezel of the glass you might wanna try heating it up with a hairdryer or something and then just pressing and holding it down for a while. Best way is on a flat surface and use a towel or your shirt or something to press down with.
I had this issue with the "frame" of my phone coming free on one side. I bit the bullet and just used normal super glue, applied a couple of small dots from behind and then "clamped" by simply tying some string around the phone.
Make sure you have something to wipe up any excess, you don't want any on you screen!
So far it appears to be working for me.

Superglue or epoxy should work. Put a rubber case on after to protect and hold it in place

Mine has been loose and today it came off. Unfortunately I had to rip the rest off because the aluminum was pretty sharp. Lost the 2D to 3D button and the camera release button. I need to figure out what to do.

Hey FilthyGoat I take my case off, remove battery and lightly air blow, wipe the edges there is always a little layer of dust there.
I do that ever couple weeks so it does not accumulate. I also use a LCD screen cleaner, no house hold cleaners on the screen.
Hope my method will give you some tips FilthyGoat .......your username makes me smile with this question you asked

Indeed, thing is, filthy goats have a very hard time keeping anything clean
I go try hard some times and completely give the phone a wipe down but the screen becomes smudged very quick ... Maybe cuz I'm filthy? Who knows
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda app-developers app
mine too, smudges happen very quick, doesen't take much in terms of greasy fingers. I have a couple eyeglass cloths around my desk at work and I give it a spray with the eyeglass solution and just wipe it down. Also, I change the screen protector every few months, and go through a few tpu cases a year. Mine still looks as new as the day I bought it.
the kinda of case and screen protector i'm using don't really leave smudges... the most ill have to worry about is dust gathering around the corners of the screen where the protector is.. but i just blow it off dust and wipe it whenever it looks dirty
Is eye glass cleaner harmful to the glass display?

Has anybody noticed that dust collects on the inside of the little window for the front-facing camera? Or, am I the only one this has happened to? I have no idea how to clean it; I've tried shooting "canned air" into the back with the cover off, and into the earpiece. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd gladly listen. Thanks!

i go naked!
I originally had a ballistic case for my phone but hate how bulky it was, and the phone is a heavy beast as it is. I really don't like screen protectors either, they either smudge too much, or distort the clarity of the screen. So I'm going totally naked now which can be a delicate operation, so I take the following steps to keep my phone clean.
1. Don't drop it. Duh. Most of the time dropping a phone without a case isn't the end of the world though, and I could live with a ding in the corner should it happen, better than living in fear and having a frumpy-ass case wrapped around it the other 99.9% of the time that I don't have poor coordination...
2. Never set the phone down on a hard surface unless very gently, this prevents scratching. If I do set my phone down I put my wallet under it, but most of the time my phone is either in my hand or in my front pocket.
3. Dedicate one pocket to you phone (you can carry your wallet there too it it's soft), and NOT your back pocket. I'm a lightweight guy and I shattered the screen on my Atrix by sitting on it when getting into my car, turned out it wasn't as strong as my iPhone's 3GS screen was, so I don't do this anymore. Sounds stupid but I've knowingly sat on my phone thousands of times without it ever breaking... I just really like my phone in my back pocket. So now I keep my phone in my front right pocket with the screen facing my leg; keys and spare change go in left pocket.
4. Carry a microfiber pouch on you--I use this to clean the screen and to clean my sunglasses, and I store my sunglasses in it when stowing them away. Most cheap-o sunglasses stores around here will sell you one for 2 or 3 dollars, the nice ones feel like micro-suede...
5. Keep your hands & ears clean, I won't detail how to clean you ears and trim your nails but you get the idea
Dead skin and pocket debris are the main things to get stuck in the speaker grills so if you're super anal you could keep your phone in a soft case with a drawstring before putting it in your pocket but that's kinda dorky, at the end of the day it's just a phone and you're probably gonna replace it with a better one in due time anyways so I say go naked and enjoy...

Was having the same issue, ended up getting this case, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015X90UJS not a problem anymore!
Got a case and that was the primary reason i did. the button placement logic... "put the buttons where you can easily reach them". I dont want to easily reach buttons that I dont use. Come on guys, right in the middle? Just a terrible decision.
Me too! But I think after a while you get used to it!

Volume buttons should have been on opposite side from power button and not placed in the middle of the phone. Like the Nexus 5... Oh well..
Also use a case to eliminate accidentally pushing buttons.
If you don't mind finger print smudges, the Spigen thin fit case has good separation between the keys and has decent grip without the bulk.

Your left handed aren't you?
This is one of the biggest gripes I have with 6p. Just a bad usability flaw. That and the fact that the power button virtually has no resistance to it so it's easily pressed when you hit even a tiny piece of it. Any decent case with button covers fixes this, but it also increases the size of the phone.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
I agree with this but it's rare enough that I deal with it. I did almost think my phone was randomly rebooting until I realized the power button was getting held down at rare times in my pocket if the angle was just right

Can't remember the last time I used the power button except to turn off the device. I always turn it on via the fingerprint reader.
