[Q] (Q) How do I fix "Firmware upgrade Encountered" - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Ok so this is my second Note 2. I am not new to rooting or anything. The first note 2 I had it was really simple, this one is giving me problems. I wasn't sure what software it was on so tryed the first method for unlocking the bootloader. And now Im getting this message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again". I have tryed to restore it to stock via the methods stated in this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024207 and its failing at sbin or whatever. The phone will go back into download mode but it fails everytime I try to restore it. I am at a loss here. Please help (p.s I try the 2nd way to unlock the bootloader, seeing as how it might be on the new ota, it still didn't work. Thanks in advance!

Try flashing the alternate restore in Odin from imnuts thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040264

Not new to rooting, yet doesn't check the software version he's on before tinkering?
And what happened to your 1st Note? Bet you bricked that one as well, yeah?

Ya so I traded the first one via craigslist for a very good deal I couldn't pass up. With that being said I was not aware there was software update for the note 2 so I didn't check the software version because updates are far and few ...... Thanks for your comment douchebag it really helped! its people like you who are ruining xda. I asked a simple question, I have fixed it via trial and error.... THANK YOU dmonger11b for a solution and not a leaving a negative comment!

Well why would I deserve a warning in the first place....I was having a problem and I asked...thats what this place is all about....We all have to start somewhere right? And with negative comments, where the hell would we be in the first place...this world is already negative enough let alone for a forum....

I don't know. Maybe sending me a PM telling me to go @#$# myself, in addition to what you said to me in quote one. All over you bricking your phone because you were too lazy or stupid to check the about phone?
I don't know, man. Your story is shaky - at best. Good luck. Heard droidstyle has a guide that will fix darn near anything. Heard it fixed an iphone once.....heard.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2

Well honestly some people need to get over themselves let alone "senior" members like yourself...if I knew the answer and if i was too lazy or stupid how did I figure out to come to xda and ask a simple question. Why would my story be shaky? I tryed to explain my problem as good as I could..what is the purpose of making up lies.haha If anything that would only hinder my quest to find a solution.

You didn't check to see the software version of your phone before you went and grabbed a file that modifies your phone.
Did you ever stop for a second and think "wait a min..."
Google "alternate restore xda".

Ok the first note 2 I had was so easy root and then unlock...I didn't remember exactly what I did when It came to the note 2. even though I read through the instructions this most recent time. I know especially with an expensive phone like the note 2 to be very careful. I knew eventually I would figure it out and I would get some help after reading through the many forums on xda. I took for granted how easy it was and thats why I temp. bricked my 2nd note 2. This 2nd note 2 is working fine on eclipse based on the latest ota now. Sorry for being an ass, but I was just trying to solve a frustrating problem, like the ones Im sure you have come across.

Understood. We can move on. We're good.
I believe Kintwofan will come on here shortly and say "use the alternate restore zip". I wasn't trying to humiliate you. I wanted you to remember what you did so you don't do it again. I bet you'll always check 'about phone' now, right? Very important, my friend.

Yes as long as you tell them that you returned it because you didn't like it they wont ask or care. If they ask you if you did anything to it then its on you to tell them yes or no. I bet is will be out by then and you'll be hooked. Good luck

Well these phones have a flash counter that can be reset i believe using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24145452 . Also in the development section, there is a sticky by appdroid that has stock flashes. Although i would almost hate to risk it. I think if you check out both of those threads, you may be able to make a better decision. Hope it helps, someone might be along here to better answer you sooner or later.

[Q] Verizon Bootloader Removal after jailbreak?

Okay here is a noob question..
Couldnt find anything about it
my note2 was on stock verizon rom i followed the instruction video everything went just FINE.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2118348
I successfully got TWRP (i think thats the way you say it). I never used TWRP before, but it works. I wiped cache to try and it worked.
The problem is, I STIll HAVE THE ANIMATED verizon boot logo thingy.
I do not know how to get rid of it, can somebody please explain it clearly, kind a step by step maybe?
Oh also i got superuser, downloaded lind2sd app, tried to delete some bloatware, it worked.
So what am i missing?
thank you! (please help!)
There's nothing wrong. You're still on a stock ROM so you still have the stock boot animation. You are unlocked and rooted though. To get rid of it just flash a custom ROM

I am in need of assistance. My friends' Galaxy S2 had to be sent to Samsung to be repaired and came back running 4.0.3, the kicker is that the 'check for updates' option is not present in the 'about phone' menu

Right, before you get on you tech high-horse, I'm trying to help a friend who I see once a week. Sorry for being a friend and going to (in my opinion) the best place for advice in this field. Follow Wheaton's Law - don't be a ****
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
Iucidium you've got 622 posts and 70 thanks, that tells me you both know plenty about android to fix this by yourself and that you make a lot of really **** posts. Asking you not to make stupid threads is not being on a "tech high-horse" as you so quaintly put it, it's to deter lazy people like you from posting any old rubbish questions which anyone with two brain cells could easily work out. Clearly it's not working. Clearly you don't know what a forum is either, so I'll help you out - it's a place where ideas are exchanged. It's most certainely not a place where you can come demanding information from people to make up for your simultaneous lack of intelligence and lack of self confidence to follow through on your ideas.
It's very admirable you're trying to help a friend and there is no need to apoligize for it, but I'm sure he (like the rest of XDA users) would be much happier if you'd not use XDA as your personal answer machine, but use - wait for it - your brain for that!
I guess I broken Wheaton's Law (the law that doesn't really exist, using an internet meme to try and defend yourself is like using a chocolate fireguard in a blaze).
Well said.
Now, he's really gonna update via kies?

After flashing one of the LS8-based ROMs (can't recall which one exactly), I remember seeing an option to "activate software updates". Try looking for the Software Update in the App drawer -- is it there, can you launch it?
On an unrelated topic -- what is it with all the recent threads about something happening with people's friends all of a sudden? "My friend did something, need help"... "My friend's phone is screwed up"... "My friend damaged my phone"... Is it just me, or what?

And normally the software updater runs all the time on stock, the problems stopping it,not starting it lol.

Yeah I got crazy frustrated with this one. Here goes. So I booted into odin, which needed the kies driver is memory serves. Ran the Root66 in PDA. Then I rebooted my phone, went into the usb debugging and MTP for usb. Updated my phone, to VRALL4 like the normal OTA updates from VW. ran CASUAL-BackAtchaVerizon-Revision311b with java (build 1.7.0_17-b02). The damn thing went through. Not trying to run sboot.bin through odin. As far as the guides go, you need to click the generic serial to be replaced in casual. Also some guides didnt show what state the phone was in for casual. Just boot up the phone like normal. I'm trying to figure out what other snags i ran into...
You need THIS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024207. If you cannot root, unroot and start over. Stop making all these threads.

UPDATE: Here is the unlocked bootloader dump. (2GB)

(Separate post for visibility)
This post on Reddit, shows a claimed "fully operational prototype" that the OP's father received from a friend who works for Samsung.
Here is the about screen.
I worked with the poster, over the weekend, to pull a system dump:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23060877490004987
The .rar contains the MMCBLK's, as well as the contents of /system as requested by Metallice in the original xda thread.
Please let me know if anything else is needed.
Edit: Title change (thanks 2swizzle)
Big thanks to Redditor iDubWheniStep for his patience and cooperation.

I don't think he was ripping anyone saying he's "owed anything". Just exhibiting frustration on a locked bootloader. I too had hoped Sammy would not have gone this route, and more development would continue. Those of us on VZW should come to expect this now, as they are nazis with the bootloader. Bootloader unlock is not a selling point for me, but it does make it more fun.

It is frustrating for those of us on ME7 not to have an unlocked bootloader, but I for one am grateful for the options we DO have right now... you can still root and use Xposed to customize to your liking or use Safestrap and flash a decent amount of roms. I will keep waiting patiently for someone to find an exploit, but in the meantime just shut up and enjoy what options we're even lucky enough to have. You picked Verizon, did you really expect freedom?
