I have a vibrant that's hard bricked, I had it JTAG'd before and I'm not really interested in going through that process again.
What I have in mind now is that I want to completely change the board in the Vibrant to one from a Captivate, reason being here in The Bahamas the the data network runs on 850mhz and has no support for 1700mhz ( I tried changing the 3G band by entering the service menu but that didn't work.)
So what I really wanted to know is, if this can be done seeing that (IMO) the only major difference with the captivate and vibrant are the cosmetics.
Secondly IF the board can be changed is there anyway that I can flash the Vibrant bootscreen instead of having to see the captivate bootscreen in a vibrant body.Thanx.
UPDATE: after stripping my vibrant down I remembered (realised) that the T959 AND i9000 are exactly the same phone, so I'll get a board from one of those for the 850mhz radio

I'm travelling to US and wanted to buy a new phone and unlock it. I would like to know which phone do you guys recommend as long as I can unlock it to use with another GSM carrier. Which method to unlock should I use?
Samsung Captivate SGH-i897 Black 3G GSM Smart Phone for AT&T Only or Samsung Vibrant SGH-T959 Black 3G Cell Phone for T-mobile Service Only
Thx

Do this method work?

Well, I can't advise you on the unlocking part, but you'd probably be better off getting a tmo vibrant over the captivate for 2 reasons.
1. Vibrant has froyo officially
2. Vibrant can also get AT&T 3g (though ymmv)
If I flash the phone with a new ROM it will still be locked right?
How do I get the unlocking code with T-mobile?
Yes, I do believe that even if you flash a new ROM over stock the phone will still be locked down to the carrier.
AFAIK, you would have to have been a Tmo customer for a while before you can ask for the unlock code.
If I know someone who is a tmo customer, can he gets me this unlock code?
Theoretically, it might work but I'm not sure if the phone has to match the one your friend has attached to his acct.
I'm running a Vibrant on AT&T. In most cities this works great, though you may lose 3g in cities that don't have the 1900 band. I just used the SGS unlock from Heroz (I think that's correct). It worked great. A person with a T-Mobile account can get you the unlock code as well, though it will take a day or two.
I would check which frequencies the carrier you intend to use the phone with uses, and pick the phone that matches those frequencies better. They are basically the same phone aside from the radios and physical appearance.
Hey guys...
I'm looking into getting a t-mobile vibrant, does anyone know if it works with rogers once its unlocked?
to be more specific, does 3G work?
I've heard some mixed opinions on this and its making me worry. Can anyone confirm whether it works without problems with a rogers sim in it?
thanks.
My guess you could modify the wdcma to work on 3g with Rogers, But remember The roger cell company was originally Rogers ATT
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogers_Wireless
Out of the box it will be edge, you will have to go onto the menu and adjust to make it recognize or force 3g on it
BTW I have done this and did get 3g where tmo is not offered but it is not as fast connection less than 1.2 mg at least where I was
thanks oka1
any other ideas?
Ok I guess I'm staying with my captivate =/

Hello all, i have a Vibrant. but unfortunately in my area at&t only operates their 3g on the 850band, which the vibrant doesn't support. so ive been stuck on Edge for months now, and getting sick of it.
I was wondering if the internal cellular antenna could be swapped with lets say a samsung captivate. so that it could operate on my local 3g band? (without any horrible software issues).
thanks for replies.
I don't know if this is actually possible, but I wish it was. That way, I would my antenna with the one in the Galaxy S 4G. I guess you'd have to find someone with that type of experience.
As of now im guessing it isn't, been searching everywhere on the net and i dont think its even been attempted on any android phones, I have learned that the cellular antenna housing is in the hump on the bottom of the phone. may disassemble it and take a look.
EDIT::: this is completely possible, however, i cannot find a supplier or place to buy a compatible chip that works on all bands....
ANYONE lemme know where i can. please and thankyou
Hi!
I was wondering if it was possible to flash a Galaxy S modem to the Galaxy S II? Cause as of now, this phone is not released in Canada, and I don't think I would be able to receive the 3G unless it can accept that 800 band. Is this possible?
Thanks!
dude, the phone is quad band 3G+ . the international version will work in Rogers, Telus and all 850/1900 MHz networks you guys got up there just like it currently does on my ATT provider here in Boston.
And no, don't think about flashing a sgs modem. that will most certainly guarantee your phone's permanent and utter destruction.
It's weird, cause i have the i900 international... and I couldn't get 3G (HSDPA) until I flashed the Bell Canada modem onto it. I'm just wondering if that would happen to the i9100.
Unless the the base band already enables 850 and 1900... then it should be okay I suppose.
Hey guys, sorry to dig this thread up again. But just curious as to know why and how the modems are different between each other?
Have a similar issue with major battery drain on SGSII here in Australia, both phones running identical setups (I understand that kernel's being different is a major contributor too) but the SGSII is seriously dying with battery drain. Over all the modded SGS1 with different kernel etc gets much lower Quadrant scores than SGSII (obviously) but it is much zippier when being used, the interface is much smoother and faster than the SGSII visually. I diverse.....the issue I think could be the modem from the provider not being up to scratch. My modem I am getting a solid 3 days (finally I get to gingerbread and found a modem that is absolutely perfect for my phone and network)....after almost 2 years of various bouts of signal issues and/or battery drain issues.
Was curious to know what would be involved in getting the modem in my SGS1 to actually function for the SGSII?
Anyone want to give a run down on how modems are coded in a slightly dumbed down infor for semi-noob like my self?
Hey guys, there's a chance i could trade my vibrant for a captivate at no cost, would it be a wise move? what are the differences???
If you're on T-mobile 3g won't work anymore and the captivate has issues with the speaker going out. I'd keep the vibrant.
Its only a small issue, but I've noticed that the Captivate's USB port is difficult to use with any USB cable but the one it comes with because of the angle of the bevel. The Vibrant is also a better looking phone, imho. Not to mention, but since Oxirane already did, if you don't move over to AT&T you will be stuck without 3g data with the Captivate.
Cappy has GB update. Vibrant - not.
So I guess the Captivate is a better option? the 3G band doesn't matter as I can switch to another carrier.
I've heard that you can't install third party apps on the captivate, is this true? what about technical glitches?
Dont get the captivate, I can second the USB problem. It will only work with the samsung cable and no the others. I wasted money purchasing after market USB cable and realized it didn't work with captivate.
