International (UK) S3 stuck in reboot loop - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I was using an app on the phone and it rebooted.
It now just loops around the initial splash screen, only pulling the battery stops it.
I can get to the recovery menu and did a factory reset but it made no difference.
Not rooted / stock ROM.
I checked the power button and that operates normally.
Is there anything else I can try ?
Thanks

flash a stock rom

If you are not rooted you will have to use Odin and a stock rom for your device.

thanks, I'll go and read up on odin.
I'd love to know what killed the OS, seems bizarre. I was only doing a crossword

I flashed the correct ROM via odin and its still doing the same thing, splash screen appears about every 5 seconds.
Any more ideas or is it going on a trip to the repair centre ?

non root apps cant really kill the os.
what fw we're you on? that app could have used the exynos exploit if your kernel is one of the older ones.

The FW is Vodafone UK, last had an update at the end of last month.
When it died there was nothing downloading etc, was just running an app I've had on there since I got the phone.

have you done a factory reset from recovery after reflashing the stock ROM?
if yes, send it to Samsung

You my good sir have a brick bug only the great Sammy can help

Have you tried a custom recovery ie TWRP or Clockwork Mod, and then a custom ROM? Seeing that you did even have it rooted it probably isn't an option but it is an idea.

[Q] Phone wont boot past Samsung logo

Greetings All,
So I was using DarkyRom at one point and then I decided to go to MIUI. Tried it for awhile, did not enjoy it so I wanted to go back to Darky. So I went to flash the kernel and when the phone rebooted it went past the logo screen and straight into a pitch black screen. So I left it for ~ 10 minutes and nothing happened. stayed at the black screen. So I pulled the battery out and now the only part of the phone I can access is the Download mode (had to pull the battery out to get out of that as well, would not switch off). So how do I fix this? Is it a boot loop? I have Odin but this PC has never had KIES or the Samsung drivers installed on it so I am not sure if that will cause a problem. Also I was using a KI3 build, can I flash stock KH3 (from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) with Odin and will the phone still work?
Any assistance (or reassurance that its fixable) would be greatly appreciated.
Probably fixable flash a stock rom from the stock rom thread as first step.

Using Odin? And can the stock be a KH3 ROM?
*edit*
Found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348374&highlight=black+screen+after+boot+logo Would this work for me? Even though I was using a MIUI ROM?
Agreed, try wiping cache/data and flash stock ROM with bootloader.

Cant access Recovery Mode to wipe cache/data, only download mode.

some quick help needed

i recently installed via odin the stock jellybean release rom on my phone along with cfroot and simunlocker.
i have found the stock jellybean rom to have a few too many bugs for my liking and want to go back to stock ics.
I have downloaded the stock ics rom latest release and tried to flash it again using odin in the pda box, it all seems to go fine but then the phone only seems to reboot as far as the samsung logo then stops.
What have i done wrong and how do i fix it please (or should i just be waiting longer for it to boot from the samsung logo?)
thanks
Try boot into recovery and factory reset.

Using clock work recovery. not too sure what to do? any thoughts would be appreciated
Do a factory reset from the recovery.

Yeah, it's a factory reset, you can perform it at any time.

[Q] Factory reset after Rooting phone

Recently I factory reset my rooted Samsung Galaxy S2 without really thinking. Now on reboot, it seems to be stuck on the ' Samsung GALAXY SII GT-19100' start up screen (with the yellow triangle). I realized after I did the factory reset that it was a bad idea so any help would be greatly appreciated
If it helps, I am rooted with Jeboo Kernel
I've done a number of factory resets.....in both the android menu and cwm........
All it does is wipe any user installed apps and user settings.....it doesn't even get rid of photos taken using the phones camera......so it doesn't affect whether your phone boots or not.......

So, how do I fix this problem. Cannot even turn off the phone as it goes black and then straight into this screen. Can get into download screen though.
OK....so you can't boot the phone....
And I'm guessing you can't access CWM?
In that case, you only really have one option......flash a stock firmware via Odin and re root.......

so i have everything set up: download mode, ODIN3 and the stock ROM, anything i should know before i flash?

Note 2 rebooting

I have a note 2 that I kept stock for a long time. And decided to root it about a week ago. I used the latest casual one click root. And it seemed all dandy initially until i went between a few different roms and it decided it wanted to shut off randomly and not boot back up past the note 2 screen on its own. But the odd part was it booted while connected to the wall or to the computer. So I flashed to 4.1.2 stock via odin and the issue still remains. I can only use it fine on charger. Is there something else im missing on flashing back to stock?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using XDA Free mobile app
Hmm when you installed 4.3 did you do so wiping everything could be an app causing the problem. Try it from brand new with no apps installed and see if that helps. Could be also a radio issue as well.

Yeah I wiped everything. Actually used odin twice to revert to stock 4.1.2. I tried a few cm nightlies before it began. Is there anything else I should flash on top of whats already been done?

I've found that even after using ODIN to go back to stock 4.1.2, that there's still leftover data on the phone from custom ROM's. I've read where others had the same issue. I don't know why Odin doesn't seem to fully wipe everything ... but this has been my personal experience.
The way I've fixed this (and all this may not be necessary).. . is that after Odin'ing back to stock 4.1.2, I boot into stock recovery, then do a full factory reset and wipe cache. Then I booted into the stock Rom and used the bypass setup trick (touch the left side of the screen right above Emergency... then right side, then left, then right again, and then volume up... this should bypass setup to save time).
Then went into phone's settings and performed a factory reset from within the stock Rom too...
Finally... (because I'm a bit OCD... so this is probably not necessary), but I ODIN'd back to stock 4.1.2 one more time and then proceeded with using CASUAL again to root /unlock the bootloader).
I know this is a pain in the butt... but this has worked for me. Maybe others will have some better suggestions.
(Edit : Forgot to mention that if you're not wanting to return to stock to start over again... check out this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53624921) on how to flash a stock recovery for the purposes of doing a proper data wipe... then can you odin your custom recovery back to the device without having to fully restore to stock... this can be a real time saver. Please make sure to thank the OP for the helpful info).
So in the end I tried to reset from stock recovery and wipe cache. Than do a reset from the settings and the issue presisted. But now I have root and recovery as well. So I may give a rom a try.

This is totally a guess, but I'm thinking that you may have a battery problem... and it's just a coincidence that these problems started happening around the same time that you rooted. You may try replacing the battery to see if that fixes things.... (you can get one pretty cheap off ebay or Amazon).
Yeah thats odd. I had bought another battery from a phone store I use to work at and have no issues now, back on 4.1.1 rooted.

Cool. Hopefully you'll have no more problems with it for a while.
