Hi all,
So i have been having some problems with my s2 recently which I hope you can help me with. Phone was working fine a few months ago, then the micro usb socket failed on me. No worries, new board goes in all is well. Then a couple of weeks ago same problems again, again no worries ill put a new board in i thought!
Please with another sucessful fix I also decided to finally test out ICS so jumped on the latest nightly cyanogenmod. Anyway, since these things I am now finding my phone will just stop getting any signal. IT usually eventually comes back after many resets and battery pull outs, and when it works it works well (3g access no problems). Today it has done the same thing and now won't seem to come back, even the IMEI number is missing this time when i type *#06#....
Does anyone know if this is likely hardware or software?
Thanks all,
Ian
Not even generic imei? You dont happen to have a EFS backup?
Have you tried flashing back te original firmware you had before the problem?
Have you tried changing the modem? since it is the one that adresses the signal problem.
And if you're thinking of flashing original ICS firmware do be carefull. Mind the Brickbug.
I face the same problem, but i at least get generic imei and signal.
Please excuse the bad english.
no imei when type *#06#
No backup.
I had this problem last weekend but the imei came back just from lots of resetting. Question is is this hardware or software?

Well, if you had a backup and restored and it would have worked it we could have ruled out the hardware.
Otherwise it surpasses me. I would have an experienced forum member answer your question. I am sorry i was of no help.
Please read these. It may be of some help.

thanks for your help anyway it is much appreciated. Hopefully someone wikll be along to help me out, ideally want to keep the phone another 3 months til my contract upgrade
Without a backup you're not fixing it. Service centre if you want it done properly, or ask local mobile repair shops (which can be very 'hit & miss').
It's unlikely to be a hardware issue if the IMEI has disappeared. It's a firmware/software problem that's caused it; exactly what however, would be conjecture on anyone's part (and irrelevant anyway; knowing what caused it isn't going to help you fix it, trust me).
Edit - Given you've only got a few mths till you get a new phone & given the probable cost of repairs, I'd be bringing forward my new phone purchase.

When I used to run GB Miui (>12 mths ago, shortly after I got my phone), the IMEI would occasionally disappear immediately after boot for anything up to 30 seconds.
Why did it happen ? I'm no developer (I'm not even sure the developers of that particular rom knew), but it always showed up or after another reboot.
Essentially, if the IMEI doesn't come back after rebooting a couple of times, you're cactus.
Maybe do a clean install of stock & a reset (stay away from 4.0.4 stock). I wouldn't get my hopes up tho. First thing you do when you run non-stock firmware/root your phone is backup EFS. Always.

i rooted a couple of years ago when i got the phone, don't ever remember mention of efs and never had problems until now...
well a couple of data wipes and a reinstall of the same rom againand i have signal again...
i think this confirms it must be software related...now to backup efs.
Tell the developers of the rom you're using. Could be useful to them.
will do! any suggestions of a ICS rom that is more stable than the CM nightlys?

Lol I would say so, however you have realised it and that's a good thing. If you can already flash a rom then you can flash modem. It's exactly the same. The only reason I've mentioned it is that I run CM nightlies myself and if I use any modem other than LS8 I have the same problem.

First of all please forgive me that I had to create a new thread for things which are explained already plenty of times. the only thing happening is that all the things explained earlier, are not working in my case. Guys please help me. everything was running fine until I decided to switch to stock 2.3.3. I was unaware with this baseband thing. I switched to stock 2.3.3. I did not like it, so decided to roll back to cm7, I did, and here i am with no signal in my phone... I did flash the old baseband, but am still stuck with no signal... am in real trouble, and now if I again switch to stock 2.3.3, then also I dont get a network coverage at all. Please help me buddies
And yes one more thing, even if I flash back the old stock froyo, via kdz or lgmdp, I cant get the network coverage ... the guy at LG service center says there's some problem with the board ... but I dont think its the board problem, is there any way to diagnose this issue or am I *ucked?

What ROM are you running on, Their are a few ROMs that haven't fixed network issues, If you are using a iHO ROM then have you tried the Airplane Mode Fix?
right now I have flashed stock gingerbread. that 'v20g' one. but if u say, i will switch to another rom whichever u say... I tried stock froyo, mik's cm7, and void.# forever's cm7. none of those fixes the signal, I even tried the new baseband patch provided by mik, not working :'(
What phone do you have. Do you have an optimus v,you have to use a ROM for it.

no there wasnt any problem, and yes I can see my imei in settings, which I found correct.
then i think there is problem in hardware.
Flash original rom and recovery and take phone to service center, if you have warranty phone will be repaired for free.

I've had no luck with wifi ever since I started trying out ICS builds.
So far I've restricted myself to leaked official builds. The phone just can't hold onto a damn wifi signal even when kept right next to the bloody access point.
Every few minutes it disconnects. Sucks when you're trying to download a huge update for a game.
I don't know if there's an official build out for India, I'm using DDLP8 which was marked as for Nepal. It's definitely stable, but wifi connectivity is totally useless .
I use Wifi Analyzer, and it shows up signal strength as pretty good, using automatic channels, and usually it latches onto channel 11 or 13. My other devices at home have never faced any such problem so it's definitely not a router problem.
Is there anything else to check for?
Edit: I'm using XXLPQ, not DDLP8 (which is the baseband version). My bad.
not familiar of ddlp8 as cant find it as sammobile / intratech
why dont you skip the leaked firmwares and just use the official ones.
also complete wipe your phone flash a GB stock and dont do anything else ...., no root no restores and see if it hold wifi.

It appears DDLP8 is a modem/baseband version. Not the build version. That's why you couldn't find it. But I'm just guessing. OP will have to confirm or deny that.

Yes, you're right. I am using XXLPQ for Nepal, after reading that the official Nepal build works fine on the Indian version of the S2. Sammobile still does not show any official build for India. Does this make a difference?
I saw the problem moments after I had flashed the ROM and rebooted, i.e. with a clean phone set to factory defaults (and rooted) - so I doubt it's due to any other program interfering.

Only for getting "official" updates through Kies. If you don't care about getting updates through Kies, then no, it won't matter.

Wifi drivers are in the kernel, I believe. What method did you use to root? Did you flash a kernel to achieve root? Try flashing a new kernel, or flashing a stock ICS kernel and see if your Wifi still drops after that.
Well, you can also give a try by flashing your baseband/modem itself and see it will be any better. You have few ones in this topic, all flashable via CMW :

I'm fairly certain modem/baseband has NOTHING to do with wifi, so I'll have to disagree with you on the possibility of it fixing his problem.

Ok, thanks for your links mate, at least i ve learned something. So, he can also give a try by testing different kernels then.
still having issues, you have to do some work..... flashing kernels is not the solution! it should work as is!
1: using cwm format system, cache, data, dalvik
2: flash one of the newer GB Stock Roms get one from intratech, using odin.
3: dont root just see if it works without doing anything, keep it stock. no restores nothing
if it works, it will work on ICS too now.

Well, if you re-read some of the posts above, he said he rooted, but didn't say HOW he rooted. If he rooted by flashing a kernel, then that could be what is screwing with his wifi, depending on WHICH kernel he used. So flashing a different kernel MAY actually solve his problem.
To my experience this problem is most likely related to the kernel you are using. The latest siyah kernel supposingly rectifies this issue. Why dont you give it a try?
I did and saw a big difference...

Hi, I have the same problem. My wifi keeps connecting and disconnecting multiple times even in a minute. I am on stock India ICS4.0.3. ddlp4.
hello all,
i have followed entropy512's thread here to get my at&t samsung galaxy s2 rooted with stock settings...i then wanted clockworkmod recovery so i went to this and followed directions to get everything installed...everything was ok and working until a few weeks ago when the 'Check Update' option under Setting stopped working...
basically what happens is when i goto Settings-> Software Update->Check for updates->Hit OK (Check the AT&T server for new software update?) a dialog comes up that says 'Checking for software updates...' and nothing happens...i have left the phone over night with device management app checking for software updates... when this used to work, it took less than 1 minute to check...
finally, the only way for me to stop this is to go and force stop Device Manager under Applications->All, so before i restore the phone to factory, i was wondering if anyone knows what might be the issue here?
Thanks,
FI

OTA updates require factory recovery. I'm a bit hazy on the details but I believe CWM, in short, replaces that.
It might also be because you either turned off/uninstalled or inadvertently removed factory bloatware.

This. Amongst other things. If u insist on trying to eventually upgrade to whatever crap gets pushed out to us yer best bet is to do a full wipe to completely stock firmware.

Do you recall all the issues with UCKK6 Gingerbread? That was an AT&T release. The devs had to tear it apart to debug and try to fix it. Any build will have bugs in it. But generally, custom firmwares will have fewer bugs than AT&T firmware.

if my research that i conducted a while ago is right, then basically samsung has implemented a flash counter which increments each time you flash a custom, non-stock rom...it might also be applied to non-stock kernels/firmwares as well (im not too sure)...so to prevent the flash counter from ever incrementing, ill need to put the phone in download mode using the jig and continue from there...

This is wrong. It is only incremented when you use ODIN to flash nonstock items. CWM has no bearing on flash counters.

if my research that i conducted a while ago is right, then basically samsung has implemented a flash counter which increments each time you flash a custom, non-stock rom...it might also be applied to non-stock kernels/firmwares as well (im not too sure)...so to prevent the flash counter from ever incrementing, ill need to put the phone in download mode using the jig and continue from there...

You have some bad information...but I have some good news for you.
The flash counter only counts the number of times you've flashed a custom kernel in download mode via Odin. Using CWM to flash anything can't touch the flash counter. Same goes for Mobile Odin. I've been rooted and flashing for months, I don't have a jig, and my counter is still at zero.

unfortunately, i joined the android bandwagon only when i got my samsung galaxy s2, which was a little late in the game, so i have no clue on all the start up issues that people experienced with Gingerbread release...
for now ill need to stick with stock/At&T firmware however ill make the switch to custom firmwares when i stop being lazy and create a USB jig for myself...

Any GB issues only surfaced if you updated to 2.3.6. 2.3.4 for a "stock" firmware was pretty awesome. I'm on the latest ICS leak from ATT (LD4) and aside from the emmc bug (I'm using a safe kernel so I don't have it) IMHO its more complete then CM9 was. I stopped using CM9 at the end of May and don't miss it at all now.

alright well i learnt something new today...and now that i have the freedom to flash like a mad man without worrying about flash counter (via CWM), i will surely checkout some of the leaked versions of ICS that you guys are using, and see which one works best for me...thanks for all the new info

I reccomend roms that use i9100 bases as they are usually better, roms like phonebricker, and shostock2 are good, my favorite touchwiz based rom though is serendipity 9. But thats my experiences so try them for yourself (i use aokp as my daily though.)

Remove Triangle and Reset Counter
http://shetalksandroid.blogspot.com/2012/03/how-to-reset-sgs2-flash-counter-and.html
Please read the above link.
I just did it last night and really works!
Time to hit the Thanks button
EDIT:
This not only makes the meter go back to zero, but also removes the yellow triangle, without the JIG.
Thanks to Chainfire, its free! Just read the above link. (And please "Search" more
4 months ago i've rooted my Galaxy S3 international (I-9300). Before rooting i took a nandroid backup of the Samsung's ICS. Then i flashed CM10 and recently (1 month ago) i flashed CM10.1. Everything was working OK (except some issues that come with the CM10-10.1). I also came against the SOD (Screen of Death) but as the devs warned us i was OK with that. From time to time i flashed a newer version of the CM10.1 nightly (recent one was 4th of Jan 2013).
Today as i was sitting in my office i picked up my device and pressed the power button just to check the time. The device did not respond and i presumed that it was another case of SOD. So i removed my battery and put it back inside as i always did when a SOD occured. I long-pressed the power button but nothing happened. I went to the nearest Samsung supplier and i bought a brand new Samsung battery to replace the old one but the device never powered up. Now i am stack with a device that cannot power up. I cannot get into download mode as well.
Is it a case of a bricked device? If it is, is there anything i can do to bring it back to life?
Thanks in advance!
In this case you cannot do much....take it to center and require motherboard replacement, if its case of brickbug it will he warranty covered....right now im interested if you flashed XXELLA or newer bootloader or did you flash kernel compiled from 7th source from samsung?

Sudden death, all you can do is get a motherboard replacement at a service center, however they may never know you flashed CM10.1 because the NAND is dead.

Thanks for the quick reply but i am not sure i can help you with the bootloader! I am not an advanced user. I just used Odin v3.04 to flash CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4. When i finally rooted my device i downloaded the CM10 and afterwards the CM10.1 rom and flashed it along with the GAPPS. And then i used a program to match the modem with the RIL (XXDLID). Ofcourse i fixed permissions.
One thing i need to know? Does the phone stays in the warranty if you root it?

You mean that i shouldnt say anything about root and CM10.1 right?
Also, is there a way for the technicians to find out that i've rooted the device and flashed CM10.1? I mean on a device that it cant even power on!
ps: i live in Cyprus (small island in the meditteranean sea) , so there isnt any advanced service center to examine my motherboard (at least i hope so).

Don't mention it, don't say anything about firmware, if they ask play dumb and just say the latest version, it's up to them to prove your warranty is void, also is Cyprus in the EU? If so check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2092530&highlight=eu
In short for your warranty to be voided by flashing Samsung has to prove that it was CM10.1 that caused the problem.
I don't think this will be needed though because your NAND is completely dead so it will be extremely hard if possible for them to prove you flashed anything.

Yes Cyprus belongs to EU.
I will not mention a thing about firmware and CM hoping they dont find it out.
In the meantime, if they replace the motherboard, i will be running Android with Touchwiz by default?

Yes you will be on touchwiz, but you can always change that
I have no idea which version though, it depends what they flash at the factory.

Samsung should worry about their skin, because i am a user that rooted his device to flash a custom ROM, then the device is not booting by any means and i am thinking to root it again after the motherboard is replaced!!
By the way, the problem on the motherboard is caused 100% because i root the device??
Thanks so much for your answers!

No it is not caused by rooting your device. Your case is a typical Sudden Death Syndrome one. For more info go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091045
You said that the last CM 10.1 you installed was from 04.01.13? Well in that case the Samsung Update7 source wasn`t applied yet to CM10.1 Kernel, so the Kernel was not secure.

I didnt find the time to read the thread you post (i am reading it later on). So the not secure Kernel could cause this?

Yes there is a problem with a specific type of eMMC chips in the SIII. There is plenty of evidence now that Samsung fixed this issue with the Update7 Source release and most S3 Kernels have this fix by now. You can read it in detail by clicking the link I posted a couple of posts ago.
I hope that they will repair your device without any problems but they should and if you couldn`t even access download mode it`s pretty much impossible to find out that you had Root or a custom ROM installed.

Some people are saying that the kernel fixes it some are saying they havent, but the service center should fix it because its a known problem.
Also the latest kernel has only been rolled out in UK and Spain. If there has not been a stock update available in your country there is really nothing they can do.

I don`t know of any case where someone had an SD while having a fixed Kernel installed. But you are right that nobody knows 100% if the fix really works.
Thank you all for your responses!! I am taking my GS3 to the place that i bought it for repairing first thing tomorrow!
I will let you know of the outcome!

Hey guys,
I have a similar problem except that my screen turns on and shows the Galaxy S3 logo when I try to power it on but it won't go further (shows logo until I pull the battery). It doesn't boot into recovery either but I can start download mode.
The phone just turned off while I was listening to music. I think I was running Omega v27.
So my question is: Should I try flash a stock ROM since I can boot into download mode? And is this even "sudden death"?
Thanks in advance!
Half of sudden death. You should also get the phone to samsung

I would take that to samsung, toy could try flashing stock but if it wasn't a failure flashing something I'm not sure it would work.
I would imagine it will fail before it tries to flash.

Tried to flash the + RESCUE FIRMWARE SGSIII I9300 + but it doesn't work. It can't flash the .pit-file and it doesn't work without either.
So I really have to return it but:
since the phone boots into download mode they will see that I used a custom firmware. Any chance to change this?
Folks,
I need help in a big way. I rooted my s9+ International several months ago and had the Renovate Ice Rom on it. It was working fine but I wanted to try out a different rom. The title of my post says it all. Since loading the other rom I have not been able to get it to recognize my T-Mo sim card (tried a new one also) to make/receive calls or texts. I can access the internet just fine. I've done everything that I could think of from doing a factory reset several times to flashing the original stock rom several times, trying 2 internet services in an attempt to "unlock" it. T-Mo is obviously no help and even after flashing the stock rom twice, I sent it to Samsung Singapore thinking that they could help but they want to charge $400 to put in a new motherboard which I declined. It's on it's way back to me.
Any and all suggestions will be greatly welcomed as I've reverted to using my LG V20 for the time being. I paid $1,000 for the s9+! This is the 1st time in years of flashing rom's that I've had this issue and may never flash another rom again due to this.
Help......please.

Thanks but as I'd mentioned in my post, T-Mo was no help. Only typing in the PUK code does not resolve it.

I looked through his entire thread, even saw some of your postings and couldn't find any mention of my issue. Mind pointing me to the exact place in his tread? Btw, I had his software on my phone prior to this coming up and it worked perfectly.
I'd appreciate it.
Flash the devbase rom. You most likely flashed the detonator mod and that can mess with returning to stock. Also follow the advice others gave and look in tek's thread. Easy solution for me when this happened was to clean flash devbase and go from there.
go to post number 116 and click the orange here button it will redirect you to the uninstall instructions

I'm currently on the stock rom after 2 factory resets then flashing the stock rom twice. I did have tek's mod on it "prior" to the above. Wouldn't all of the above have wiped his mod off the phone completely leaving nothing to uninstall?
I've done nothing to it since all of the above so supposedly it's a clean phone at this point. So based on that info., what would you suggest?
AND, thank you for the response as perhaps you and ddloco are on the right track....

Wiping doesn't eliminate it. You have to properly restore or flash with a rom that overwrites the mod.

As you're vouching for his rom, I'll root and install twrp again and flash his rom. Did you flash tek's mod afterwards as well if you're still on T-Mobile?
I'll get my phone back from Samsung Singapore this week and give it a shot. If it works, how do I get a "donation" to you?
Either way, thanks again for the help.
I can vouch for his rom cause I've run every one of them. If your getting it back from Samsung see if it works fine first. I don't need any donations. Give it to a charity of your choosing if you want. Yes I'm running teks mod on TMobile now. Having volte is a godsend on TMobile as I get to many dropped calls on 2g and hspa.

Samsung told me that they would have to charge me $400 to replace the motherboard (yes you read that right) as a fix which I obviously declined. As soon as it's back, I'll try starting from scratch again via rooting, etc. as you've confirmed about. And I'll let you know 1 way or the other as to the outcome.
Your time is definitely appreciated.... Sabresfan.
