[Q] Missing cwm on SD card after rooting - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I just rooted my daughters nook by using a method i found on youtube. Thing is i put a 16gb sdcard in it but after rooting it took up all the sd card space. So i followed what the video said to do. Which was to reformat the sd card from the settings on the nook. So i did that but now theres no cwm etc on the sd card anymore. I would like to be able to flash roms on this nook, but with no cwm on the sd card can i still flash roms on the nook. If not is there a method to fixing this. I seen someone else had the same problem. Is there a fix for this or am i ok to flash roms.

I think it's convenient to have my CWM installed internally. An easy way to do that is to burn a root card again (it has CWM on it but not a high enough version for newer ROMs), put a flashable CWM on the card and boot inte te card's CME, and from there flash the 6.x.x CWM.
I describe under C how I, as noob, installed the CM10 I'm still running and am very happy with.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2081981
If you don't want to install CWM internally you can also use a smaller sd card than your 16 GB and make it a bootable CWM card.

If you're trying to build an SD card with CM10 on it without messing with the internal nook software you can go to this link and download the SDC version.
http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/
It will already have superuser root access with the ROM so you don't need to pre-root the tablet before plugging in the SD card. Preform a factory reset by holding down the "n" button at boot before doing so.
You can repartition the SD card afterwards for more space. DATA1 is used to store apps downloaded, SDCARD is used to store app data and all other SD files such as movies, music etc.

Whether the NT boots onto an SD depends entirely on the format and content of the SD 1st ("boot") partition, and has nothing to do with the NT being rooted or not.
Also, many NTs can boot off SD only from power-off state and upon insertion of a powered-USB cable.

[Q] New nook/safest way to mod?

So I'll be getting the fire for my wife and probably not rooting that right off the bat but I'll be getting the nook tab16g and was curious as to the safest/less hassle way to get cm7/root on it BEFORE b&n locks it down with either 1.4.2 or what have u. Dont let it connect to my wifi and make a root sd card in advance? Right after getting it out of the box put the root sd card in and then with another sd card have the cm7 rom to load once cwm is loaded? What caches (dalvik, etc) if Any need to be wiped? And lastly how to unlock/unrestrict the internal memory so I can use more than 1 gig. Thank you in advance...from what I've seen the rooting process is very similar to how I rooted my droid Eris back I'm the day

Just received my nook tablet yesterday and here was what I followed
Before receiving NT I got my sd card ready days before using these directions
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22029125&postcount=131
Opened nook took it out of box, created account blah blah got to home screen just to make sure everything was ok with it (screen, etc).
Then I continued following the directions booted to cwm and flashed the update.zip from the post above. After that I booted up NT and updated the nt hidden settings app in the market (after flashing update.zip you get adw launcher, market, etc)
Made sure in nt hidden settings block ota updates as well as allow side installing was enabled.
Then installed CWM to the device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458630
Took my sd card OUT of the tablet and formatted from my COMPUTER (had to be re-partitioned using easeus partition magic, then formatted fat32)
Then from there you can either insert sd card and use tablet or install cm7
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826
Preparing the sd card before receiving tablet (takes a while to write image to it) this entire process from unboxing to booting cm7 took 15-20 minutes and was extremely easy
You said you formatted your COMPUTER? I have to format my computer in order to root? Or do I just need a computer that is using fat32? Or did u mean sOmething else entirely?
Edit: never mind....6am reading mode fail....you formatted your sd card with your computer. Thankfully I have 2 sd cards so should be easier
Edit2: you did indeed initially register and create an account with b&n...is it safe to do that? Doesn't the newer 1.4.2 update block rooting?
he said "formatted FROM my computer" - ie. do the format in your computer using card reader

Unable to make bootable CWM SD, NT is bricked :(

I successfully rooted my Nook Tablet and installed CM 7. However I foolishly applied a zip update that was not compatible and now I'm stuck in a boot loop.
My CWM bootable SD card refuses to work no matter what. I've followed the steps exactly as stated :
1. Using GParted on Ubuntu
2. I selected No-Free space preceding partition while partitioning
3. 50MB
4. FAT 32
5. Boot and LBA flags
6. Copied files
I don't know what to do to to make it work. I've tried all sorts of minor variations in partitioning the card but nothing appears to make the SD card work.
Can someone please help me?
Use Adam Outler's Ubuntu recovery image. He provides step by step instructions on how to unzip the image and transfer it onto the sd card. Have to use linux so if your on a Windows pc, then go grab you a cd or usb bootable copy of Ubuntu. The restoration process takes a while and seems like it hangs in spots but have patience. It takes somewhere around 20 minutes for it to complete but in the end you will be back on stock 1.4.0, safe and sound....Good Luck.
Alright well, I managed to get CWM working. Apparently my SD Card was just fine - I just needed to make sure the NT was plugged into a computer at the same time.
Now my question is : how do I get things working again? I had previously thought that I could simply flash CM 7 again and this would fix the issue, but now I realize that for some reason CWM only read from the 50MB partition from which it booted. Changing the SD card after booting into CWM doesn't work either.
So what do I do? Thanks again..
Nevermind. What I did was pushed the recovery to the internal card so that I didn't need the SD card to boot into recovery. I then reformatted my card and dumped the CM7 zip onto it. Then reflashed CM7. Voila.

Glad to read you got it working.
Just wanted to comment on the above.
You can boot the SD version of cwm then remove the SD card. This is exactly how I installed CM7 That I'm currently running.
It didn't take the first time as cwm didn't read my SD. But after a repartition of the SD csrdz no problems.

I actually tried taking the SD card out, reformatting it and then trying to get it to read but for some reason CWM just doesn't do it. Maybe I should have tried a few more times...

Nook Tablet: Boot from SD vs. Internal root

HI folks,
Total newbie here looking for advice. With the excellent instructions on the site, I was able to quickly and easily burn CM7 to a class 4 SD card and boot my 16 gb nook table w/ no problem. I love CM7 and it blows away the Nook OS and the absurd limitations B&N has placed on the tablet.
Here's the question: I now want to open up additional storage and want to know if it is worth rooting the Nook internally?
I also wonder if it would run a little faster vs. running from the SD card?
I see no reason to ever go back to the B&N environment. On other hand, don't want to accidentally brick it in the process when it is running fine from the card.
If I choose to go with internal root, I am also bit confused on the best (most sound) way to go ahead and load CM7 internally, given that it is running now from the card. Do I just move it over or do I have to do something with CWM?
Thanks!
David
Easiest way to get a rom on the internal:
1. Make a bootable clockworkmod sd card (similar to your CM7 card, but this card will allow you to boot into a custom recovery).
2. Transfer desired rom (zip file) to local memory of the nook.
3. Boot into clockworkmod recovery via the card.
4. Make a backup of the current rom.
5. Install zip from sd -> choose the zip file you placed on the local memory.
6. Wipe data/cache.
7. Reboot into your new internal rom. If you would like, you can use indirect's app to flash clockworkmod to the internal memory and then format the bootable sdcard so you can use it as media storage.
If you ever need to return to stock, you can simply restore your backup via recovery.
Thank you very much!
That helps. I guess I am still trying to decide if it is worth doing that.
Will I have memory free on the device that I do not now and will it run any more efficiently or faster (vs. running off the SD card)?
Thanks again.
I think you'll have full access but it won't be mounted when you plug it into a PC.
If you want it to be mounted, you'll need to repartition. There is a guide for that or you can go to B&N and have them do it. Though, the B&N repartition is only half and half; doing it on your own you can get a lot more.
This is only for CM7 based roms though. CM9 does not have the internal memory mounting yet (I'm sure eventually it will).

Hmmm I need to search for a guide to mount the internal memory again.
I have done what the OP is thinking about doing on my Nook Tablet 16gb.
It works flawlessly but I don't see the internal memory when hooking the nook up to a PC. I just get an exclamation mark in my device manager. I can browse the internal memory through cm7, and it shows that I have nearly 12 gigs of free space on the device itself, but I cannot drop content from my pc on there.
/me searches how to mount internal memory
Try modifying your build.prop file as shown in this post
Unable to mount "/bootdata"
I got an error msg (Unable to mount "/bootdata") when performing 4. What did I do wrong? I use TWRP to backup the ROM on bootable SD Card.

If you are trying to backup stock ROM and then install CM internally on emmc, I'd suggest taking a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35669871 for info/pointers.

Copying to the root of the sd card simply means not putting the item in a folder on the sd card.

Thanks, but the reason I asked this question is that in Method 4 of installing CleanRom 4.5, it states
•Copy ROM to SD Card AND PH98IMG.zip AND GB Firmware Patch to ROOT of SD Card
I thought whenever you reboot, it would automatically search for a PH98IMG file and would load that first.
In the CleanRom install, you flash the ROM, then the Patch in Recovery first, then flash the PH98IMG last. If the PH98IMG file is in the root of the SD card, won't it load that first?

If you have a rom with the quick reboot installed, boot right to recovery once you're done copying the files, otherwise download quick reboot from the market.
You'll only have issues trying to get into recovery if you're using the Vol - + power on boot up option.
Hi All, 1st post here and i hope i'm putting it where it should belong lol.
in any case my problem is similar,
I've unlocked thru HTC DEV, and was running stock GB on my Rezound from Verizon.
After combing through this forum for a few days i felt confident enough to try to flash my first ROM. (thanks to all the AMAZING guides BTW)
I picked up Vigor_Stock_Doedexed_3.14.605.5, PH98IMG, and the GB Firmware Patch.
I followed the Steps for Flashing with S-ON and GB Firmware and running Amon-Ra 3.15
Everything went according to plan (ROM Flashed, Patch Flashed) but the issue was when i went to reboot to flash the bootloader with the PH98IMG it wasn't able to locate it.
Upon a little more research I found an article that said HBOOT cannot read from the internal storage so I recovered to stock with my nandroid backup file, and placed the PH98IMG in the root of the external SD card.
Upon rebooting into HBOOT the PH98IMG was located and asked if i would like to install it. i selected "no" as per the guide i was following, however i was only left with the option to "power-down" and there wasn't anyway to get to the recovery menu to flash the ROM and the Patch in the order that they needed to be.
After fooling with the HBOOT menu a few more times to no avail i decided to select yes thinking (foolishly maybe) that this would let me get to the recovery menu and i could flash everything in the order it needed to be. However this was not the case, and now im left "soft bricked".
I pulled the External SD card, and was able to get to recovery mode and did a clean wipe. However the nandroid backup is also on the External SD card (i don't have a spare as i'm out of the country, probably my first mistake, and i dont have a USB micro SD adapter to remove the PH98IMG...)
Upon seeing this article i wish i had known about the quick reboot option (many thanks to mjones73 for that).
My first question is where does the PH98IMG file need to reside (root of internal or external SD)?
Secondly, what is the easiest way to remove the PH98IMG from external SD so i can recover my nandroid backup and try again? (i'm not opposed to running out and grabbing a micro SD -> USB adapter if that is the safest bet)
Lastly if there are any n00b mistakes in my approach please let me know lol
hopefully i haven't hijacked this thread or mis-posted. and again many many thanks for all the information and hard work from Devs and members alike!
EDIT: PROBLEM SOLVED!
So as i was sitting around pondering my dilemma it dawned on me... if i took out the External SD card, wiped and re flashed the ROM and GB patch, i could power down and reinstall External SD and that would force the boot loader to be flashed correctly and in order. welp, i'm happy to report that i've solved my own problem and hopefully i'll be able to contribute to this forum in the future.
thanks again!

Bootloop into CWM

Hi, Nook Tablet gurus!
I desperately need your help! :crying:
I've been trying to bring my nook tablet to life for 3 days and evidently just reading and googling doesn't help - I need your help!
What I have:
Nook Tablet 16Gb
It always boots into internal SD cwm - nothing helps!
NT can boot into internal CWM, but I can't get to emmc - internal CWM just doesn't find it!
When I load through SD card I can see the content of emmc. And even use .zips on it to try to flash. But anyway i always get or in SD's CWM or into emmcs CWM
I tried lots of things: Tried different CWM versions, tried to mount\unmount different partitions (but didn't formatted!) Wiped cache, data, dalvik cache lots of times. Used method from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1663836) but it says, that i must contact the B&N shop after reboot.
What I didn't try - repartition through ADB, as I'm afraid I'll just screw all things further.
My initial goal was just to flash ordinary (but beautiful) CM7 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1512373) previously I used just rooted version of stock for half a year.
Could anybody, please help me? Will appreciate any help!

Sorry for VERY stupid question.
I can make an sd card with CM7 SD ROM on it?!
Wow i thought i can only write CWM on SD cards and nothing more serious. Could you, please give me a link on how exactly do this and what should I do next after this SD CM7 Rom will be booted from SD card?
Thank you Very Much for answering my noobish question - i really tried to handle everything by myself at first.
Yes you can make a bootable CM7, CM9, or CM10 card. CM7 is easiest, so we'll try that. Go to this post right here and follow the instructions underSD VERSION IMAGE.
Basically, just do this:
1.) Download the CM7SD ROM in that post.
2.) Download the .img writing software in that post.
3.) Attach your microSD to a PC using a USB adapter
4.) Using the .img writing software, write the .img ROM file to your SD card.
5.) When it's done, put the SD card in your NT and power it on from a completely off state (NOTE: You may need to be plugged into a wall charger if your NT doesn't boot into the SD card.)
6.) Wait for it to boot into your CM7 SD ROM.
Just flash CM7 to eMMC. It will run faster than off the SD
Sent from my NOOK Tablet running CM10 0.05.3
