Sense 5 - HTC Droid DNA

When you guys think we gonna be getting the Sense 5 on our DNA? It look kind of like windows but better organized!
Sent from my HTC DNA using xda app-developers app

Apparently there is someone working on it already but I have seen very little on it. I think that when the HTC One comes out we will see a bunch of ports to our phone over the following weeks but until then we probably won't be seeing it.

Yes, not officially any time soon. But yes it is coming

Will Verizon push Sense 5 out as an OTA or, will we only get it from xda-developers? This is my first HTC I don't know how or if Verizon and HTC upgrades devices to new versions. I would love to have Sense 5 and latest version of jelly bean. I know we will get the latest version of jelly bean from xda-developers. CM10 and CM10.1 is being worked on now.

They might ota sense 5 but it will be probably be many months from now (I doubt they will though) plus by the time they do it we will have had it through xda anyway

Kinda siked to have sense 5 on the DNA,I don't have a DNA just yet..I'm gonna be upgrading to it in two weeks.whoever is working on putting sense 5 to this device props to you can't wait to flash it

Doubt it, with the three previous HTC phones I've had it seemed like they never updated anything, they only fixed bugs but they would fix them 6 months after a dev did

I don't think me will get it from HTC because "we don't have an IR blaster" that will be their reason. I know you didn't ask if we would get it from HTC just throwing out what their excuse will be this time.

Sense 5 for DNA? Keep dreaming boys. The only way is dat devs here might port it over. But an official ota is not possible. This is HTC plus verizon, perfect mixture for ota failure. Not to mention a DNA+ will be up pretty soon with sense5 maybe, so am not sure big red will waste money updating the DNA when a new baby is coming.

Look a couple posts above yours. A very reliable source of information stated that we'll be seeing Sense 5.0 on the DNA.
Even without the information above, I was confident we'd get Sense 5.0... The HTC Thunderbolt is 2 years old now. It shipped with Android 2.2 with Sense 2 and it just received an upgrade to Android ICS with Sense 3.6... It took them a long time, but HTC did it. I don't see why the same can't happen with us.

I emailed HTC and here is what they said "I understand your interest on this specific feature. There is still no official announcement regarding any updates of the Sense UI for the HTC DNA. Please stay tuned for news about any updates for this phone."
Last time I checked Sense 5 is not a specific feature it's a whole UI update.

I wouldn't really believe this. Sense 5 requires a whole new software update.

This phone will get sense5 regardless if its an ota or a dev ports it either way it will have sense5
My opinion: ota wise..
HTC and Verizon will not just ignore the DNA if they do update it to sense5
Its htc's own flagship device, yes the htc one was just announced but the dna
Is still htc's flagship device so i highly doubt that they will not update it.the only way
Forsure that they will not update it is if sense5 becomes a big flop and htc deciedes to
Skip sense5 and build another one..example sense 3.5 was a huge flop nobody liked it
Only came out in one device so htc skipped that and went on to sense 3.6.so weather it takes
Awhile or not I'm sure HTC and Verizon will update the DNA sooner or later
My opinion: port wise..
If HTC and Verizon do decide to not update the DNA to sense5 in the long run
A dev will port it to this device

seems like everybody is excited about this update including me. so whats best, jump out and do the update or wait until someone have a safe rooted port?
Considering the end of the month is in two days.. this is exciting. We've already heard this might arrive in January. If they think the may possibly have it by the end of the month it feels like we can't be more than a week away from having it. Here's hoping for Monday .
Does anyone know if Sense 3.6 = Sense 4.0? I mean last week there was this thing about Pocketnow.com trying out "Sense 4.0" and praising it a lot. Does anyone know if s that the same version of Sense we should expect when the update hits?

Not surprised. The Rezound was automatically excluded from receiving JB officially when HTC posted that any devices running JB would be on Sense 4.x, which they already made clear would not happen for the Rezound back when the One series came out.

According to HTC but my rezound seems to handle sense 4.1 ics 4.0.4 with no issues. Its all a matter of what they want to support... The hardware is clearly there. I just found out the amaze 4g is getting official cm10 support

Huh...
Didn't Google state that any phone manufacturer that wanted to use their GApps had to offer support/ugrade their phones for 18 months?. Even today, the Rezound still qualifies.
Couldn't that land HTC in some hot water if someone brought it to Google's attention?

[Q] Original ROM for update?

I'm running the Sense Revolution R3 ROM on my Desire X right now, and am very happy with it. However, I was wondering, if a JB update is released for the DX, will I have to revert back to the stock ROM to update, or can the update be done simply be relocking and updating in this ROM itself, seeing as it is still running sense?

Yeah you say that, based on the press release but I remember the Desire HD was DEFINITELY getting ICS they even listed it specifically... never did.
Remember the GB update for the original desire, the scrapped it then released an appaling ROM on htc dev that had no internal memory or SD-EXT functionality..
I KNOW what the press release says, but you are dealing with a company that constantly renages on updates for its handsets.... I will believe it when I have the phone in my hand.
Also the previous post mentioned 4.2 and sense 5, that is HIGHLY doubtful. That is what I was commenting on as you can see in my brief post.
---------- Post added at 01:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:15 PM ----------
Also, 512 and less not getting it does not mean we are DEFINITELY going to get it. They aren't, we are still in the running. They are not equivalent statements.

I'm hopeful we will. LlabTooFeR seems pretty reliable on these things. However, HTC aren't.
Just wanted to make it toally clear that saying 512 RAM is the cut off point is NOT the same as saying all other phones WILL get it. We have priority as a 2012 device for TESTING JB on the phone and then deciding to release it.
I'd guess, that we will get JB but with a horrible restricted Sense Lite and some of JB stripped out (notification expansion etc). It will be a poor compromise and we'll all be looking for ROMS pretty quick.
I hope I'm wrong, but all my dealings with HTC would suggest this to be the case. The Desire HD debacle was ridiculous and the contempt for the original Desire that was shown later on for their own flagship is concerning always. Fingers crossed though for something cool from HTC by June.
Is it possible that we will have a JB ROM soon though?

This is correct, I don't appreciate the sarcasm guys. The DNA is much more powerful than the Gnex and it has been out since November and so has 4.2.
4.2 mostly added changes for tablets, there really wasn't much changed for phones over 4.1 besides adding that new photosphere. That's mainly the reason why Google didn't bother to give it a new code name. I doubt it's worth the effort to upgrade.
I think everyone needs to remember what goes into these things. Clearly none of you have worked in an IT department before. Google releases a new version. HTC will get it, and then begins customizing it for their devices. They have to adjust the firmware, rebuild sense... it's not small development work. Then it goes into QA for a while to make sure it's up to par. Then it's released to Verzion and goes into their QA. Problems that arise during these phases are corrected and retested. Finally after it's all signed off, it's scheduled for release. That process can and does take months. It's the significant drawback for the android platform. Apple on the other hand would have been done with their initial release. Google Nexus phones get all the upgrades because Google tests everything for them before they release the new version.

Yes but the change from 4.1 to 4.2.isn't that drastic that it would take this long to release it considering it came out when the DNA did.

I want the new version mainly for the lock screen changes.

It is extremely unrealistic to expect a heavily skinned HTC device to get updates at the same speed as a device running just stock vanilla Android.
The Sense overlay is massive, and requires a lot of tuning and customization in order to function properly. Throw a new version of Android at HTC, and they have to spend a lot of time to make 'Sense' of things, if you take my meaning. The first thing they have to figure out is whether or not the update will even improve the user experience. What if there's no benefit to the end user because the update was mainly for tablets (as the previous poster said). Or, is it worth the cost of re-tooling Sense for an extremely minor update?
All this hating on HTC over updates on fairly new phones is really unfair.
Now the Rezound ICS update debacle was unforgivable, but this device hasn't even been out 6 months, and they've already put out an OTA with new radios. Dude, that's freaking awesome support!
So instead of all the negativity, how about congratulating HTC on lessons learned from the Rezound delays, and enjoying what you've got?

You are right but the new android isn't that different aside from the lock screen. I am not hating on HTC it's more than likely Verizon.

Man idk why you even started this topic? Have you been on Android or VZW for any length of time whatsoever? This shouldn't be a surprise. I mean we will probably see AOSP 4.2 from one of the devs long before we see 4.2 or even sense 5(which we already have) from VZW. Updates for phones that aren't a Nexus always take a long time and VZW is notorious for making that wait even longer.
ViperDNA
Woah woah woah... Sense is NOT skinned / heavily modded its a completely built up OS based on Aosp/Linux kernel
Two totally different things

Yea, my brother got it last week for his Nexus.

4.4 coming "soon"

Good old Big Red will probably delay it further than end of Q1 but hey at least it's still "on track" for our DNA

I came just to post this.. honestly, why keep doing this? The DNA can run Sense 5, we know this. So, Why keep playing this game? First it was what, 4.2.3, then 4.3 "coming soon" and now onto 4.4 ... Oh well. The dev's have our backs here for sure.. too bad they couldn't get their hands on some of the code.. But here is a link to the article with copies of tweets from HTC...
HTC Gives Clarity To Update Schedule - 4.4 KitKat Coming To Droid DNA By End Of Q1, HTC One By End Of January
when could we get android 4.5, 2015?
I'm quite happy with my DNA the support of the devs on here is phenomenal! I'm just saying that we getting this update EVENTUALLY and then will get even better...and I'm not talking about the update I'm talking about the devs doing their thing with the code...I can honestly say because of the support on here this is the first cell that I don't have that urge to upgrade after exactly a year since I got it I always get that itch but I'm cool with my DNA running Viper DNA I know it's going to get better

End of Q1, ugh. Can't wait for March 31 to see an OTA.

I concur here with kenohki88, the devs really made this phone something to contend with. Much appreciation here.

Just S-OFF & root, flash custom rom with sense 5, & blam! Done. I gave up trying to have faith in VZW. Always delays & other BS. I'll stick with the devs. Better updates. Better support. Better features.
Thanks for posting this. Most people thought it wouldn't happen at all but better late than never. The only reason I get stoked about official releases is because it's much smoother for development. Cutting to bits some port has proven to be problematic so any official release can yield higher quality custom roms.

Yeah, I won't run the official OTA anyways, but having an official base for our phone makes it so much easier for the devs. They don't have to hack and port from other phones to try and possibly work with the crap kernel source we have now.
Ah well, I do agree it sucks we have to wait but as said, having a version for our precious DNA will make it easier in the long run for the devs not having to port everything. Still better than it was stock thanks to the viper team Rom. And always better than an iPhone

They'll delay till end of 2nd quarter and by then device will be EOL so therefore no more updates. HTC should stop tweeting about timelines if they continuously cannot hold them. DNA is a perfect reason why you should root your phone. Hardware capable, glacial software updates or never.
Why do people still complain, is the same for almost every AndroiD maker. If you don't like it, switch to at&t and get a nexus. If you need an official then sit back, wait, and don't hold your breath. If you don't go flash a rom.

Makes you wonder how in the HECK Motorola got the Moto X updated to 4.4 so fast, and with VZW as the first carrier, even before some Nexus' have been updated to 4.4!
Makes me consider the Moto X as an upgrade!

I replied to his tweet about the 4.4 update asking if that is considered him putting it in writing, and he said "Yes" without any hesitation.
I don't know how to post a twitter image so I just copy/pasted the text of his response:
My question to him:
@jasonmacHTC @crmeyerhofer Is this considered you putting this in writing?I love HTC dvcs, but lack of updts on 3 of them are driving me away
His reply to me:
Reply to @badogg @crmeyerhofer yes. we need to finalize schedules internally and with Verizon.
Are they still promising the 4.3 update by the end of the year?

Because moto is a google owned company . Probably they had the kitkat code before it was announced. My 2 cents. Also they run almost a vanilla android version HTC is very modified.

Seems like it. Below tweet was in response to someone asking if DNA will get an update... Click the link to see in further details.

Remember most of the update issues are what Verizon does after HTC gives them the update. HTC actually does a decent job with updates for all carriers it is just Verizon that delays them.
This phone is a year old. It will receive nothing from Verizon. They'd rather you upgrade.
