I came just to post this.. honestly, why keep doing this? The DNA can run Sense 5, we know this. So, Why keep playing this game? First it was what, 4.2.3, then 4.3 "coming soon" and now onto 4.4 ... Oh well. The dev's have our backs here for sure.. too bad they couldn't get their hands on some of the code.. But here is a link to the article with copies of tweets from HTC...
HTC Gives Clarity To Update Schedule - 4.4 KitKat Coming To Droid DNA By End Of Q1, HTC One By End Of January
when could we get android 4.5, 2015?
I'm quite happy with my DNA the support of the devs on here is phenomenal! I'm just saying that we getting this update EVENTUALLY and then will get even better...and I'm not talking about the update I'm talking about the devs doing their thing with the code...I can honestly say because of the support on here this is the first cell that I don't have that urge to upgrade after exactly a year since I got it I always get that itch but I'm cool with my DNA running Viper DNA I know it's going to get better

Just S-OFF & root, flash custom rom with sense 5, & blam! Done. I gave up trying to have faith in VZW. Always delays & other BS. I'll stick with the devs. Better updates. Better support. Better features.
Thanks for posting this. Most people thought it wouldn't happen at all but better late than never. The only reason I get stoked about official releases is because it's much smoother for development. Cutting to bits some port has proven to be problematic so any official release can yield higher quality custom roms.

Yeah, I won't run the official OTA anyways, but having an official base for our phone makes it so much easier for the devs. They don't have to hack and port from other phones to try and possibly work with the crap kernel source we have now.
Ah well, I do agree it sucks we have to wait but as said, having a version for our precious DNA will make it easier in the long run for the devs not having to port everything. Still better than it was stock thanks to the viper team Rom. And always better than an iPhone

They'll delay till end of 2nd quarter and by then device will be EOL so therefore no more updates. HTC should stop tweeting about timelines if they continuously cannot hold them. DNA is a perfect reason why you should root your phone. Hardware capable, glacial software updates or never.
Why do people still complain, is the same for almost every AndroiD maker. If you don't like it, switch to at&t and get a nexus. If you need an official then sit back, wait, and don't hold your breath. If you don't go flash a rom.

Makes you wonder how in the HECK Motorola got the Moto X updated to 4.4 so fast, and with VZW as the first carrier, even before some Nexus' have been updated to 4.4!
Makes me consider the Moto X as an upgrade!

I replied to his tweet about the 4.4 update asking if that is considered him putting it in writing, and he said "Yes" without any hesitation.
I don't know how to post a twitter image so I just copy/pasted the text of his response:
My question to him:
@jasonmacHTC @crmeyerhofer Is this considered you putting this in writing?I love HTC dvcs, but lack of updts on 3 of them are driving me away
His reply to me:
Reply to @badogg @crmeyerhofer yes. we need to finalize schedules internally and with Verizon.
Are they still promising the 4.3 update by the end of the year?

Remember most of the update issues are what Verizon does after HTC gives them the update. HTC actually does a decent job with updates for all carriers it is just Verizon that delays them.

Given that we have already received nothing from them, is there really anything to lose?
I mean, the only thing they can hold back is the ICS official ROM, but we already have that...
If they do release the official rom, they cannot legally hold back the kernel source. So, what can they do?
I seriously considered a few days ago what would happen if one of us kindly emailed HTC explaining everything and politely asking for the kernel source.
THEY CAN HAVE US ALL ARRESTED FOR INTERNETS HARASSMENT, CHARLES CARREON HAS FREE TIME NOW.
Actually, the only thing we can do is keep asking, hashtag it up gentlemen, but keep it CLASSY. Type like English is your first language. Though they do hate bad PR, totally going to put #HatesCustomers on the end.

Any advice what I should write?
VZW could give a **** less and bugging them will never result in anything positive development-wise; they will release on whatever schedule/circumstances suits them, customers be damned...but I'm all for pounding on HTC via social sites or other avenues, i.e. petitions, letters, etc.

Tell them how sense slows down the device and we want AOSP but that's only possible with source and you should probably tell them about all the drama that goes on around here because we don't have it, oh and all the devs leaving us
You nuts? You gotta at least tell them something they want to hear. Try something kind of like this:
To whom it may concern,
I am an aspiring Android developer and for years, I've absolutely loved Android devices from HTC. In fact, the Galaxy SIII, Nexus, and other competitor phones have zero appeal to me because I've always loved HTC. I don't feel comfortable with any other hardware manufacturer because I know I can always expect great design, ergonomics, and a manufacturer-designed user interface that makes sense (so much so that you guys even call it Sense).
My latest device is the HTC Rezound, but I upgraded before the One X and other devices were coming out because Verizon is the carrier in my area with the best signal quality. I love my Rezound because it reeks of the superb design and quality I can always expect from HTC. However, I like to develop on it as well, and I've recently hit a few snags because I lack the kernel source for the phone. So I ask as a loyal customer, could you please let me have it?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Your fan,
[NAME HERE]
Their not going to release a ICS kernel source when it hasn't even officially been rolled out yet in my opinion. Hopefully when it is released they drop the source quickly.

7 MONTHS?! That should be illegal. What the hell was stopping them?
As for our source, I doubt they are allowed by Verizon to release anything before OTA drops. Which will not happen until their new cash cow (Droid Incredible 4G) has had time to move plenty of units. So... probably no sooner than 2 weeks from now. That's if you're optimistic.
"...reeks of the superb design and quality..."
Perhaps not the best choice of words, lol.
But seriously, thanks for trying. This is too good a phone for HTC to let ignominiously die.

Look a couple posts above yours. A very reliable source of information stated that we'll be seeing Sense 5.0 on the DNA.
Even without the information above, I was confident we'd get Sense 5.0... The HTC Thunderbolt is 2 years old now. It shipped with Android 2.2 with Sense 2 and it just received an upgrade to Android ICS with Sense 3.6... It took them a long time, but HTC did it. I don't see why the same can't happen with us.
I emailed HTC and here is what they said "I understand your interest on this specific feature. There is still no official announcement regarding any updates of the Sense UI for the HTC DNA. Please stay tuned for news about any updates for this phone."
Last time I checked Sense 5 is not a specific feature it's a whole UI update.

This phone will get sense5 regardless if its an ota or a dev ports it either way it will have sense5
My opinion: ota wise..
HTC and Verizon will not just ignore the DNA if they do update it to sense5
Its htc's own flagship device, yes the htc one was just announced but the dna
Is still htc's flagship device so i highly doubt that they will not update it.the only way
Forsure that they will not update it is if sense5 becomes a big flop and htc deciedes to
Skip sense5 and build another one..example sense 3.5 was a huge flop nobody liked it
Only came out in one device so htc skipped that and went on to sense 3.6.so weather it takes
Awhile or not I'm sure HTC and Verizon will update the DNA sooner or later
My opinion: port wise..
If HTC and Verizon do decide to not update the DNA to sense5 in the long run
A dev will port it to this device

It is unsure at this point.
From the link in the OP.
All with nary a word from The Now Network, which is usually pretty on top of announcing updates for devices. Ergo, at this point, we're not entirely sure if this is the start of a full-on rollout or just a "soak test" of sorts. We're thinking the former, but until official word is muttered from the lips of Sprint, it's a crapshoot.

and why incur the cost, if there's virtually no recourse for not releasing the updated OS. But if that's going to be the case, have the manufacturer release the upgrades, requiring that their own crapware is included in the release.

Guys, you've got to remember that us, the people on XDA, arent the majority. Most people don't know what jellybean is and if they do they couldn't tell you the difference in jelly bean and ICS. I've been on SnowJB for a while now. It's still about the principle. Sprint released jb, even if it is just a soak test. From my experience and research it is usually T-Mobile first, Sprint second, and ATT/Verizon tied for last.

I personally don't agree with this.
The vast majority of consumers don't know what version of android is on what device.
They won't even know.
And it shouldn't matter what device people buy, as long as they extend their contracts.
Also, stock isn't too bad on this phone.
I seriously could not care less when we have a ROM that's pretty much exactly what the stock update is going to be with SnowJB. Plus we've got AOSP, AOKP, and CM10 on the way. Not to mention The Base and other ROMs I'm neglecting to mention. If you're on XDA you likely don't need an official Jellybean release. I'm not a huge fan of this news being posted all over. We have better updates than what will ever come out. Who cares?

As the One X on our beloved AT&t received 4.1 today, I take it as a sign we too shall receive it!
In 8 to 10 business months.
This was meant as a stress relief exercise. Please do not over exert from laughter.
Also, I know many out there hate stock with a passion. Let's keep this thread free of angry insults and hurled accusations. Thank ya much.

I care. Official release means official source. Snowjb is great but official release would be better

I thought they had 6 months to release official source once they put out an update...

This one was meant to be more of a joke thread, as I stated earlier. I was being sarcastic. I was poking fun at the earlier thread.

... And wasn't there a problem with the source code being released in a manner that was difficult to work with?

I personally don't agree with this.
The vast majority of consumers don't know what version of android is on what device.
They won't even know.
And it shouldn't matter what device people buy, as long as they extend their contracts.
Also, stock isn't too bad on this phone.

I don't know any android user that doesn't know what version of android is on their device. I can think of atleast 20 people. Most people are educated enough these days to know what they have and what newer version is out. They may not know how to root or modify like my sister but she does know when her iPhone doesn't have the newest iOS.

Then it seems most of my acquaintances... are not super bright.
But in all honesty, the everyday consumer really doesn't know. With Android so fragmented and most devices hardly receiving updates, I can think of a lot of people I know that don't know. They aren't tech people, they just want a smartphone.
I've had to walk friends through getting to the about phone settings just so they could find out what version they were on.
On iOS devices, everybody (or just about) has the latest update available to them; and even then, they really don't know what the hell is going on.
It is amazing how many people out there don't know much of anything about technology, and have no idea what their devices are capable of.

The fact that sprint is releasing right now but it seems that att isn't even close has me fuming. I know there are great releases out there but I'm just mad because it seems that att doesn't care at all
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
How long did it take att to release an update for the LG Thrill? That might be a good guesstimate for the Optimus G...
Took them 8 mo from the release of the one x (July to march) for this JB.
I also like to use my Inspire as an example. Promised Jellybean, and it was a giant no-show. Thank god for our Devs.

Funny thing is, neither AT&T nor HTC said ICS was coming to the Inspire, only HTC said it then retracted it for the Desire HD, international version.
Such a mess these updates are.

It's clear from what we've seen from other carriers around the world, that the lack of official Jellybean is totally on AT&T. I love this phone, but it looks like the only way to keep current is to depend on our devs and with brand new shiny coming out very soon I suspect we will lose quite a few of them. I realize brand new shiny phones are always coming out, but the next crop of devices are slated to be real power houses.

This is correct, I don't appreciate the sarcasm guys. The DNA is much more powerful than the Gnex and it has been out since November and so has 4.2.
4.2 mostly added changes for tablets, there really wasn't much changed for phones over 4.1 besides adding that new photosphere. That's mainly the reason why Google didn't bother to give it a new code name. I doubt it's worth the effort to upgrade.
I think everyone needs to remember what goes into these things. Clearly none of you have worked in an IT department before. Google releases a new version. HTC will get it, and then begins customizing it for their devices. They have to adjust the firmware, rebuild sense... it's not small development work. Then it goes into QA for a while to make sure it's up to par. Then it's released to Verzion and goes into their QA. Problems that arise during these phases are corrected and retested. Finally after it's all signed off, it's scheduled for release. That process can and does take months. It's the significant drawback for the android platform. Apple on the other hand would have been done with their initial release. Google Nexus phones get all the upgrades because Google tests everything for them before they release the new version.

Yes but the change from 4.1 to 4.2.isn't that drastic that it would take this long to release it considering it came out when the DNA did.

I want the new version mainly for the lock screen changes.

It is extremely unrealistic to expect a heavily skinned HTC device to get updates at the same speed as a device running just stock vanilla Android.
The Sense overlay is massive, and requires a lot of tuning and customization in order to function properly. Throw a new version of Android at HTC, and they have to spend a lot of time to make 'Sense' of things, if you take my meaning. The first thing they have to figure out is whether or not the update will even improve the user experience. What if there's no benefit to the end user because the update was mainly for tablets (as the previous poster said). Or, is it worth the cost of re-tooling Sense for an extremely minor update?
All this hating on HTC over updates on fairly new phones is really unfair.
Now the Rezound ICS update debacle was unforgivable, but this device hasn't even been out 6 months, and they've already put out an OTA with new radios. Dude, that's freaking awesome support!
So instead of all the negativity, how about congratulating HTC on lessons learned from the Rezound delays, and enjoying what you've got?

Man idk why you even started this topic? Have you been on Android or VZW for any length of time whatsoever? This shouldn't be a surprise. I mean we will probably see AOSP 4.2 from one of the devs long before we see 4.2 or even sense 5(which we already have) from VZW. Updates for phones that aren't a Nexus always take a long time and VZW is notorious for making that wait even longer.
ViperDNA
Woah woah woah... Sense is NOT skinned / heavily modded its a completely built up OS based on Aosp/Linux kernel
Two totally different things
