I was trying to flash this thing back to stock to sell to someone from CM7, and for some reason, it seems like I'm bricked. Here's the method I used:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1663836
I did everything step by step up until:
"Now DONT do anythign to your Nook - Just sit back and relax
Once Nook finishes installing IMG, a "Green Checkmark" will appear on top right hand corner
Remove your SD card from your Nook Tablet
You will see Nook will restart itself"
I didn't see a green checkmark, I saw a red x instead. Would this be the problem? I redownload the img a few times now and tried this a few times, so I'm kind of giving up. It won't boot up at all unless I have the card in and it doesn't boot past what's described above.
I tried to use this method as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1470910
But the download said it had reached it's limit for the day. I can try it if someone has a mirror?
Try https://github.com/succulent/acclaim_recovery_sdcard, see its README file for an annotated index/description of the resource/tools and usage instructions. See also http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37515697&postcount=31 before selecting some "unbricking" tool.

If the repart image didn't work you have a few options. Use the Adam Outlers Ubuntu Total ReFlash Method to try and recover the stock operating system. If that doesn't work than maybe you erased some important information such as serial number etc. Take it to Barns and Noble for fixing.
Finally got the Ubuntu recovery to download, i'll report back if it works.
taking it back to b&n probably isn't an option. it's over a year old, so i think that would make it out of warranty, but correct me if i'm wrong.

FWIW, the /factory partition which gets wiped by AdamOutler's "Ubuntu Total Wipe & Reflash" contains backup copy of the NT device-specific data such as serial number, WiFi MAC address, etc., in archive format (romdata.zip) -- and there is no indication in Adam's post that this data gets saved (for later reflashing) before the partition gets wiped.
Hey guys iam new to this whole rooting and jailbreaking but ever since I read about it I realy want to do it so I tryed it on my NT and in the last step it my NT didnt want to read my sd chip so I was stuck in boot mode so I just hit the factory reset and everthing was fine but when I turned it back on 2 days ago I got a please restart your device and try again if encounter again call customer support so I tryed the method he described above but I got green check mark but when I took out my sd chip the same error message pops up help will be greatly appceated thx.

On the Adam Outler post is says.
"So, as a result of my work, I would like to present the first ever Ubuntu Recovery. This will totally wipe your device. With the exception of the ROM Partition which contains serial information, every single partition will have zeros written to it then flashed with just enough to preform an initial recovery reflash. Normally when you preform an update or flash the device, it is simply formatted. A formatted device can be unformatted. A zeroed device cannot be unformatted. All information is overwritten with zeros."
The Ubuntu recovery tool won't flash over the serial number. Only write zeros over the current partitions and attempt to reformat your system correctly.
If the ROM partition is gone( meaning serial number, Mac address etc) the options are to somehow recover and flash a ROM partition onto the Nook (which would be a problem if multiple people had the same information) or take it to Barns And Noble.
So in other words am screwd I dont know how to flash is there a tut on flashing cwm file and what are some good free flash programs

Alright! (If you dont mind helping me out) How did you get it to boot from the SD card? I've made a Ubuntu Card in hope of just testing out the operating system, but it won't boot from the SD. Tried plugging in the USB and waiting, but nothing. Tried without and booted to stock. Any extra steps involved?
K thx hopefully ill get it

The /rom partition contains the working copy of the NT device data (factory installed device info (ProductID, manufactured data, etc.) and individual device data (serial no., MAC address, security encryption keys, etc.)), and the /factory partition contains the backup copy of the same data and well as the stock ROM in zip archive format, which are to be used by the stock recovery to restore the NT to factory fresh condition.
So, although Adam's tool itself does not zero out the /rom partition, its content is still subject to loss/corruption due to stock recovery's process of automatic reformatting and re-flashing the /rom partition with a non-existent (or possibly Adam NT's?) backup copy -- as it attempts to restore the NT to factory fresh condition.

If one enables full device encryption in Ice Cream Sandwich, am I correct in assuming that that the internal SD of that device is now not going to be available in the CWM recovery mode? And even if it was, the root fs would not be available? If so, this pretty much would make CWM flashing your device near impossible?
Does CWM even work if you use FDE? Or is it planned/
The question I guess is, when do you input your encryption password? Is it some pre-boot step?
I really want to enable device encryption but I can't find enugh details on how it works.
I did read this post on it., but it doesn't really answer my questions. And it is unclear if it encrypts the internal SD, or just the root FS?
http://source.android.com/tech/encryption/android_crypto_implementation.html
No one knows anything about this?
I got a Gnex today from Verizon in the US and I encrypted my phone after I unlocked the bootloader but before rooting. As a result I don't think I will be able to root because it doesn't seem that the modified boot.img that the instructions tell me to use can mount the encrypted system (it sat at the Google logo w/ the unlocked icon for 10 minutes before I pulled the battery and let it boot the stock boot.img) which came up fine.
It seems the only way to decrypt the phone is by doing a factory reset.
That's all I know. That being said, while a custom recovery may work for wiping partitions (such as cache), it would probably be mostly useless until the custom recovery is updated to support the encrypted file systems. I'm a *NIX user and an engineer, but don't have a lot of experience with Android's internals, so take all that with the appropriate sized grain of salt.

Bump.
Anyone experimented with full device encryption / ROM flashing / SD Card? I'm curious about this as well, but not curious enough to experiment.
I dident try it myself, so i dont exactly know, how this works. But i think device encryption shouldent completly block clockworkmod recovery.
I think it could be a problem to make a backup while your device is encrypted. But i think it shouldent be a problem to recover a old system over an encrypted one. Encryption keeps people without the key away from reading data. This dosent mean you cant wright something over it and replace the locked data with some new one. But then you defenitly loose the old data. I dont think you can flash a new ROM or a recovery without a full wipe. You probably gona loose all the data you had on the old system.
But i general i think this is anyway a good think to do when you flash a new ROM.
I think you could give it a try, without briking your phone. But i dident try it, so i cant take any responsibility.

I encrypted mine after flashing the stock ICS 4.0.3 image and rooting. CWM still loads, but when I try to use USB mass storage, windows tells me it needs to be formatted before the SD card can be used.
You can use titanium backup to make backups of your stuff, and restore them to a non-encrypted phone. I have found no other way to unencrypt the phone than factory reset either. When you encrypt, then go to settings > security > encryption, it just has a greyed out area saying "Phone is encrypted", which is stupid and needs to be fixed.

So if I factory reset the device from CMW I will not loose my pictures or TB in the internal SD?
What about flashing a new ROM?
Thanks!
I have been playing with ICS + FDE for several days doing different things. First off this is:
Nexus S 4G, running Pete's crespo4g OTA ROM
I flashed with CWM which is still on there and runs fine.
However: /data and /sdcard and /system (?) are encrypted and CANNOT be mounted.
To restore you have to 1) make a full backup over USB to a PC of the whole SDcard (or at least the important folders).
2) wipe and reformat everything. This isn't just a factory reset, this kills the sdcard as well.
3) mount (hopefully) the newly reformatted /sdcard and blow your backup from the PC onto the /sdcard
4) use CWM to restore a previous ROM.
That's pretty much it, give or take. Not for the faint of heart. However, if you are concerned enough to want encryption, you don't want to just say reboot recovery and voila all your files are belong to us, right?
---------- Post added at 03:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:34 PM ----------
Also, the backup to PC part is just your sdcard. It doesn't back up the whole system. There might be a way to do that via adb, I don't know.
So i am running rooted runnig miui.us rom. I just tried to encrypt phone.. It ran for 2 and a half hours and I got impatient. thinking maybe i shouldnt have done it... Then after a little bit of panic i said **** it if i lose data i lose data... so i powered off and back on hoping i didnt and the rom booted back up with all my data intact..... •••••• Wish I had more to report but im not doing that again until someone can confirm that it works fine...... I have tried booting into cwm yet.. If i have an issue when i need to boot illl report back but if you dont hear from me here then assume I was able too.
Pete's to CM9 - still encrypted
IT does indeed take a fairly long time to encrypt. If I understand correctly it will build the encrypted partition on a loopback (or something like) before erasing the original (by overwriting?).
I've got more to report. I followed my plan (couple posts back) for unencrypting and reflashing my phone. (Nexus S 4g).
The first bits of this worked fine. I was able to flash CM9 onto my phone (works like a champ btw). While the phone was in recovery I mounted the SD and copied my backup back onto it.
However...
When CM9 booted I STILL got the "unlock your device" screen, still the same password, and it decrypted and booted. That was surprising, but not as much as when I looked for the SD card, it said it was incorrectly formatted! The only thing to do was reformat and copy with the phone on and unlocked.
So lessons learned: 1) a factory reset from _inside_the_ROM_ doesn't remove the encrypted partition at all and
2) As far as I can tell, the SD card _is_ encrypted along with /data
I'd be very interested to hear other's experiences, especially someone who can remove their SD storage.
Undoing FDE
First off - Lacking a device with removable storage to test with all I can tell you is that the sdcard is not accessible by any normal means after FDE is enabled without booting into the encrypted system.
"Removing" FDE required three steps beyond normal:
-Factory reset from within the ROM
-factory reset/wipe at recovery and/or format /data
-once into a running ROM, reformat the sdcard
Once all that is done (in addition to normal setup for ROM) you should be able to operate normally again.
problem with encryption on sgs2 with android 4.0.3
I really want to enable my device encryption too, but I can't !!!
the phone start encrypting after he ask me for a new secure password, rebooting and asking again for my password and surprise!!!.... the password is not match ?!?!
I repetead these steps for 3 times but the same result...the password does not match!!! ?
Please, if someone found a trick to repair this inconvenient, tell us in this post steps to be followed.

Hello,
I've installed CM internal to (2) NT 16GBs without incident, and I got stumbled by the n button not working with 1.4.1 that was on my third. Ultimately - I downgraded to 1.4.0, installed CM7, and then did the dumb thing.
I meant to hit wipe data and cache, and I clicked factory reset in CWM. (And at this point - it is stuck in a state where I can boot to CWM - but cannot get CM7 to boot in any form from the internal rom).
I attempted the following
1) acclaim restore (just tried didn't do anything)
2) backup / restore from alternate nook Tablet 16Gb (man this seemed promising ...)
3) couple of the different unbrick scenarios - but I don't have adb, and it seems like windows 7 is not a happy camper with nook usb devices, (and adb isn't happy either.)
4) meghd00t restores (couple of different variations.)
does anyone have any starter threads that I should start walking down for the same stuff - I have browsed, and it's been a couple of hours and I'm exhausted. will poke back in tommorow, and will get this thing plugged into a linux host.
It didn't seem like adb could be so hard ...

Hmmm interesting... ok first of all doing this "I meant to hit wipe data and cache, and I clicked factory reset in CWM" is not dumb is ok to do but is not good signal the hang actually is very weird. Maybe all you have is a corrupted cwm recovery flash. Now be explicit if you indeed could try some unbrick methods succesfully (the ones running from sdcard) and what methods exactly did you try.
~ Veronica
things I've tried - part 1
1) just try to restore to factory with acclaim_update.zip on non-booting sdcard , (this is the 1.4.0 image) - I get the grey n, a flash of white - (like it's going to boot), and that that "please restart your device and try again..."
(This worked when it was factory), but it seems like the logic to check the sd card and start to recover isn't working.
2) Tried the thread here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1562130 - meghd00tr4-sdimg.zip boots, but first time - get red reverse highlighted line - "booti: bad boot image magic in memory" - s5 in the upper left corner of the cyanoboot screen, and the n button doesn't seem to do anything.
3) same thread different image - repart.img, this runs fine- and after about 30 seconds of boot, I get a green check, (waited a full (2) minutes after that green check before I unplugged it.) - same message after boot.
4) full restore of nook tablet from current good cm7 image (and this is the one that most concerns me) - NT16gbV4_6 based cwm v5.5.04 - attempting restore of backed up alternate nook tablet - and the exact same thing happens at boot - does the image not touch partions that aren't related to the root install -(this seems like maybe there is something the bootloader is looking for in the image that isn't right, and it wedges?)
I am going to work on getting an adb setup going that works and then start working down a couple of fix recovery scenarios today / tonight.
It doesn't seem like this is unrecoverable - and the worst part is -I had cm7 booting fine for a couple of reboots, and then something went awry.
--Adrian
as I think about this ...
I do have (2) differnt backups, and I wonder if that restore was the wrong thing to do.
I got to thinking this as I saw the restore of the .android_secure file, from the ALTERNATE nook. I have the backup from the 1.4.0 "original working" image of this nook before the cm 7 issues- but I put it on an SD card that is safetly out of my reach. (In a friends cell phone.)
I think an easy thing will be to restore that backup as another test.

Tried to revert to 1.4.0, and followed all instructions as showned on a youtube video. Was just curious, if it ever happened to any one. If so what did I possibly do wrong....

I botched up my partitions with CM7 running from the sdcard. I had partitioned an 8gb with two 4gb partitions and installed CM7 on the primary. The second partition didn't show up in CM7. A LOT of people have been asking the same questions pertaining to unbricking the Nook Tablet. This is for anyone who gets "The Red "X"", or "E:/ Can't Mount" Errors. If you have these problems use these methods in the order they appear.
FOLLOW ALL METHODS AS DIRECTED! ROOT AND FLASH ROMS AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION
Step 1) Wipe to factory reset. Wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache. Reflash the ROM via CWM 6.***
Step 2) Use the Repart Image in attempt to reflash stock B&N OS

Step 3) Follow the instructions given here

Step 4) Albert’s Method: Make the R3 Card
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528625
Step 5) Install Adam’s Method (MAC Address and S/N are in danger of being lost. ONLY AS LAST RESORT! S/N and other information is on your device. S/N on the SD slot, MAC address inside the device.)

If someone has a backup of their device it won't help because you lose MAC address and information for YOUR device. You can't have multiple devices with the same Product ID and MAC address etc. These methods are meant to recreate the partitions by writing zeros. If I find other methods I will add them to the list.
I know this has been posted before but I am still having trouble. I have a nook tablet rooted and with android using cyanogenmod. You'll need a spare SD card and the free disk imager that you get from a link in A dam's post. After booting, it sometimes was a couple tries for me to get it to fully "take", but it did reset my Nook back to 100% unrooted factory on very 1.4.0. Be aware this is a FULL wipe & reset, so you lose everything. Good luck.

The "8 failed reboots" method only works if your NT still has stock recovery (typically the case when the NT running rooted stock ROM or just plain stock ROM). Your NT instead has CWM recovery (which most likely was installed when CM was flashed), hence the "8 failed reboots" method will not work.
I'd suggest you consider using the repart.img tool http://raywaldo.com/2012/06/how-to-un-brick-a-nook-tablet-8gb-or-16gb/, or the tools in Succulent's repo https://github.com/succulent/acclaim_recovery_sdcard.
Most importantly, be wary of using any method/tool that reformat partitions other than /system, /data, and /cache (especially /factory and /romdata) without first backing the content of the partion to be reformatted -- see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37515697&postcount=31.
