[Q] GSM/CDMA issue - Motorola Droid RAZR

I've been working through these fine forums but can't find an answer to what is I admit a bit of an odd question and hope someone could shed some light on my problem?
A friend of mine who knows nothing about mobile phones or rooting has bought a Razr Xt912 from Ebay UK and is trying to use it with a UK mobile network. . I've no idea whether it was a UK device originally. He's also been 'messing' with it and may or may not have accepted a few OTA updates. There certainly seems to be some Verizon bloat on it that wouldn't be appropriate for a UK based phone. There is a SIM card slot so I'm assuming it works on both the CDMA and GSM systems. There's also an option for switching between 'global' 'CDMA' and 'GSM'. The phone is rooted and has SafeStrap 3.11 installed (by me).
The odd issue is that the phone has full voice and data when a Virgin Mobile (UK) SIM is installed but only has voice when an O2 (UK) SIM is swapped in. I could understand if the phone was locked to CDMA and neither UK system worked but the fact that it works fully on one and only provides voice on the other SIM is confusing me? It might be down to the network Virgin Mobile uses being the new UK EE 4G network but I'm not sure.
I'm trying to get the phone to work with the O2 GSM network and am not sure if I need to flash a custom GSM ROM, a CDMA ROM and then a GSM patch or simply contact O2 for an unlock code for GSM functionality.
I'm completely happy with rooting and flashing ROM's to phones on Samsung hardware but have to admit to being a bit uncertain about the pitfalls etc with Motorola.
The guides and install instructions for ROM on the forum are clear enough but I'm not sure if just flashing a GSM compatible ROM to this phone will make O2 data burst into life or fail completely. I've tried searches but the problem is so specific I'm struggling to find a post that directly addresses the problem. A pointer to such a thread or some advice would be most appreciated. Thanks.

I can help you out with 1 of your questions.
You say you have the xt912 so you can only flash cdma (xt912) roms, do not attempt to flash gsm (xt910) roms!
The xt912 will work on a gsm network outside of the usa only. Just to be clear here that does not mean you can flash gsm roms
Hope that helps somewhat

[Q] Unlocking the Fascinate for a different carrier?

I'll be visiting India for a month and would like to use my Fascinate with a local carrier while I'm there and continue with Verizon once I get back. Do I have to unlock the phone? Is it possible? and how?
I have used GSM phones successfully over there in the past but this is my first CDMA phone, so I don't know much about it.
I found this, but don't know if it is Sprint specific.
TIA.
Not very likely. CDMA phones can't be unlocked nearly as easily as GSM phones, if at all. You have to basically flash a new radio ROM that will work with whatever CDMA carrier you are going to be using the device on. I would search around and see what you can find, by my personal searching points to no.
our phones don't use a sim card, so it's highly unlikely you could use it over there. however, verizon offers loaner phones for out of country use.
If the carrier will allow flashed phones, the fascinate is as simple as it gets. Flash mip and all other information along with prl using qpst build 323. Then plash ppp for 3g using build 215. Yeah, it's that simple.

Thanks, I didn't understand half of it but I'll Google it up
If I do all this, will I be able to use my phone with Verizon once I get back?
Heh; semi-derailing of topic and food for thought.
A co-worker of mine has a vibrant (T-mobile). Apparently you can flash GSM to CDMA and vice versa, but it breaks a lot of stuff
Note: I said 'flash' - I didn't say anything about it working. Your phone will boot though and it'll look like that version you flashed... but it don't work.
This is why you search before bricking (I'm a bit over novice with software and got outta brick mode with a little help from here).
Welllll....basically you just flashed a CDMA ROM maybe, because flashing GSM radio information to a CDMA device(which I doubt would even work) would most certainly brick your radio.
Pretty sure the CDMA radio on the Fascinate will NOT work on the other major CDMA carrier which is Sprint, and the Fascinate will definitely NOT work with GSM carriers such as AT&T and T-Mobile. Although, it is entirely possible to flash to another minor carrier such as MetroPCs or Cricket, with special instructions of course.

Photon Baseband Switcher Enabler.APK For All US GSM Networks

Just wondering if anyone has seen or tried to develop a baseband switcher application like the one found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1203297 so the Photon can work on all US/international CDMA/GSM networks?? Out of the box it has(CDMA 850/1900-GSM 850/900/1800/1900-WCDMA 850/1900/2100-Wimax 2500).. but no 1700 T-MO..I have a Photon but no use for it since im using T-Mobile..Perhaps unlocking and a baseband switcher would enable me to use this amazing phone on any US GSM network like my Moto Defy Ive been using this app and Itfunz for international travel and im amazed how well my phone works on almost every GSM band in the US and around the globe.....Anyone?? This Phone with Root,CM7 and a "working" baseband switcher would be untouchable!!
Im on sprint so no real need for the switcher but i would love to see this come to life. I can make my brother jealous and steal his sim card.
I would love that
I am in the Dominican Republic and have not been able to find any alternative baseband versions to flash, since 3G (850 Mhz Band) stopped working a few days ago.
I´ve reflashed to stock, tried different roms and kernels, but i guess if i can swith the baseband version it might work again.
This app would be awesome, anyone tried it on the photon yet?
Any News On This?
I tryied it - doens help me.... I created activity which is switch's baseband and turn it to USA gms baseband.... I lost connection :-((( and can't repair it :-((((
please help :-((( baseband switcher says "your baseband setting are incorrect. would you like to reset it to defaults?". I answer Yes and it reboots with old settings and don't work :-(
maybe somebody knows a way to reset baseband settings?

what sbf stands for? I just bought the phone and my reason to buy it was the sim card ability I would like to use it on my trips to Mexico and I would very much love to be able to nuy a sim card from a Mex. carrier and use that way.
I believe you can. I forget the post where somebody gave the name of the sim card they used...
You may need to contact Sprint to get international use activated, I believe at no charge.

any update on this one? Agree the photon would be unstoppable if able to use on us gsm networks...

[Q] Possible to flash HTC Evo 3D to work on au KDDI?

Hello all.
I've searched through forums here on XDA as well as other sites on internet for an answer to this and nothing so far. I own the HTC Evo V 4G (Evo 3D for Virgin Mobile) and I love the phone, especially after flashing the new radio firmware and MidnightRom. I just found out though that I have come up on military assignment to Japan. I know the mobile carrier au KDDI has the same phone in Japan (HTC EVO 3D ISW12HT) and that they have WiMax coverage in the area I'm going. My question is: is there a way to flash this phone to operate on au by KDDI networks? I've researched the Japanese flavor of this phone and as far as I can tell it is the same phone spec-wise and both can operate on the same CDMA bands. I assume I would need to flash new radios for KDDI, but would I need to flash a stock KDDI RUU.executive altogether? If I had to flash to KDDI stock ROM, could it be flashed with a custom ROM after? The specs for my phone configuration are below:
Software: MidnightRom 1.3.9
Model: PG86100
Android: 4.0.3
Kernel: 3.0.52-ck1-Anthrax
Baseband: 1.09.00.0706
Build: 1.13.652.2_R2
PRI: 153_144
PRL: 61009
HBOOT: 1.57.000 Stock (Locked)
Recovery: TWRP 1.1.1
S-OFF: JBear method
I know how to and have flashed almost everything on this phone when given good instructions. The only thing I haven't flashed on this is the Hboot but I know how to do that as well and should have no issues now that I'm on custom ROM. Any help would be greatly appreciated and please, before you go and say it can't be done have some proof to back it up. I have seen this phone flashed to almost every CDMA carrier there is. The only thing I know of that might be an issue is if the US and Japanese KDDI has different partitions or mount points for the phones internal partitions, otherwise the phone is pretty resilient for what is supposed to be a carrier "locked" phone. Thanks in advance for any help!

Well, there's only two things I can think of. The first isn't very likely:
au KDDI may be able to flash phones from other carriers. My current service (MetroPCS) allows for that. They'll reprogram the phone to work on their service. I'm really not sure if au KDDI does that.
The next thing I can think of:
Buy a phone from them (a cheap one) and have it activated. Then use it as a donor phone to swap the ESN/MEID on to your Evo 3D. I think Boost Mobile users and Virgin Mobile users do this to flash Sprint Evo 3D's on their service. Setting all legality aside, I think it would definitely work since they are both the same model and both CDMA. Although, you would need to obtain au KDDI's programming information & PRL somehow, which probably exists somewhere on the internet (ie the MMS settings, data settings, etc.). I'm sure you could even flash any ROM you wanted to.
It's not too hard of a concept, there are similar guides for other services, for example this:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/460035-evo-4g-boost-mobile-guide-evo-3d.html
Maybe you could be the first to come up with a solution?
Thanks for the helpful and informative reply. I have seen a tutorial similar to the one you linked with a way to flash the HTC Evo V 4G to Straight Talk (basically prepaid Sprint network to prepaid Verizon network) by using a fairly inexpensive 3G capable donor phone for the ESN/MEID. The only downside was that the phone lost 4G (WiMax) capability and they were some tweaks/mods to get MMS working. I believe SMS was functional. If I did something like this, I would really like to keep the WiMax capabilities of this phone as even though I don't have WiMax here where I live, WiMax is available where I'm going (apparently WiMax has really expanded in Japan in comparison to the US). I will see what I can work out. Hopefully au KDDI offers phone flashing services, but I have read they are more stringent in their policies of locking/unlocking phones than here in the States. If someone knows of a tutorial somewhere on the net or has done this before and can post a tutorial I'd greatly appreciate it

[Q] [How] VZN S4 not working on Vodafone GSM network. Need a Nerwork/Sim Unlock

I recently bought the cell phone in US and am visiting India for a couple of months. When I tried using the GSM sims of both vodafone and airtel in in India I wasnt able to make any calls or rceiev any sms, despite of this being a WORLD PHONE.
I even rooted my device and by installing the APN MAnager I was able to install the Vodafone settings and to my surprise
Was able to get its 3g/Data services working.
However the Voice or the sms is still nit working.
The signalbar is showing just fine and so's the data connection symbol. However with the gsm sim in I keep gettin this NON VERIZON SIM ERROR icon on the top left.
Under the settings>MOBILE NETWORKS ive tried changIng them to both GLOBAL and GSM but still no luck yet.
Can anyone help me out with a network/sim unlock method, similar ti the ones avaialable on the tmibile and other phones.
Pretty sure the voice still uses CDMA. I believe that Verizon still only uses the LTE/GSM for data.

If thats true, then it wouldn't truly be a global phone now would it? GSM will work for voice, but you still need verizon's permission. It should work with a verizon sim, but you will pay through the nose. Now I thought the SIM was unlocked but I could be wrong. Also, even if it is unlocked, it still needs to be compatible with the network frequencies. I don't know what frequencies the VZW S4 has but you can google it.
This being a Dual Band mobile These are the bands that it supports..
CDMA 850
CDMA 1900
GSM 850
GSM 900
GSM 1800
GSM 1900
LTE 750
LTE 1700
WCDMA 850
WCDMA 1900
WCDMA 2100
Also on googling I came across some posts which said the people have managed to use there gsm sims in europe n korea and were able to get the voice n sms. For data they too had to play with th APN..
So what I am tryin to make out from this is we don have a solution to get the voice n sms working on gsm network
Pic showing the error message that I get when I try to make a call.
The second oic shows how my Network signals and data signals are showing just fine but still am not able to make any calls or sms.

I used my phone and put in a Straight Talk (AT&T) SIM and it works with data and voice after manually putting in the APN. If Verizon phone works on AT&T network, it should work with any network out there provided that the bands are supported by the phone.
I was under the same impression, as it worked for me too when I used the tmobile(gsm) sim with it. I was able to make calls only and data was restricted.
Where as with Vodafone IND its the other way round. Am not able to make/recieve calls or sms but data 3g is working just fine.
Confused what could the problem possibly be.

If rooted, you can use Titanium backup, and freeze 'Setup wizard'.
What good would it do if I freeze the setup..how do you suggest I proceed further after freezing..?

I recall needing to call verizon and get an unlock code for my old droid 2 global so that I could use non-verizon global sim cards in it. I believe you just needed to be a customer in good standing for at least 10 months, and could only do it once a year per line, or something.
Edit: A quick search showed a post claming it is already SIM unlocked, so never mind!
Since only my Data is working on my VZW GS4, that too after rooting and installing titanium and apn Manager.
Just wanted to confirm if I am thinking in the right direction, Is it possible that I may flash the Stock Rom for I9500(international Version) in my vzw GS4, and it would work with any international carrier around the world, cos currently am only able to use the Data/3g and Neither Voice nor SMS is working out here for me for GSM carriers like Vodafone and Airtel.
Id really appreciate if anyone can help me lookup a workaround for this..
I just made to run my port of Android Revolution HD 2.0 for i545 (I was porting it from i9505). Everything is working, except CDMA-networking. It's multilingual as well. If anybody wants - I could give it to test. I asked mike1996 for permission to port it, so it is permitted

Carrier unlocking S9+'s gsm vs cdma.

This situation was dealing with the SM-G965U U.S. S9+
I recently had itekimei unlock two S9+'s. They were from xfinity mobile, which is CDMA.
The phone's work, but only on CDMA band carriers i.e. verizon, sprint. With GSM, only messaging and data work. Data barely.
Is it commonplace to be stuck with either GSM or CDMA frequency carriers after having professionally unlocked the network? Like if you had a locked T-mobile phone and had it unlocked, you'd be stuck on GSM correct?
Maybe this is a given and I am ignorant.
I didn't exactly check whether xfinity ran on cdma or gsm before I purchased them, so that was my fault, not itekimei. He's a great guy. Highly recommend him, as long as you have your radio systems correct.
Edit: I think I found the answer, and that is the U.S. S9+ is not cross compatible with GSM and CDMA. Please correct me if I am wrong and tell me how to make it happen if you know. Thank you.

The phone does work with GSM providers for calling, messaging and data. Check your preferred network type and select a different one. I replied to another thread you posted in with the setting I used that works.
Before unlocking my phone I had done an extensive amount of reading and research. If I was gonna pay for the unlock I wanted to make sure it would work for GSM networks. From what I can tell the G96U phone you have would be virtually identical to the one I have, with the exception of the carrier installed firmware. This is what would define the phone as Sprint or Xfinity. So if my phone works for calling, data and messaging on AT&T which is a GSM network then yours will too.
If needs be flash the U1 firmware to the phone as this would be the one that is on the unlocked S9 you can buy from Samsung. As a firmware for unlocked phones i believe it would be the most generically compatible with the providers for this scenario... well it's one of the reasons why I flashed it on my phone. The other is since I no longer use Sprint I dont need the Sprint bloatware.
There are tutorials on how to flash the G965U1 firmware to a g965U phone on this forum.
Also try keeping your inquiry to one thread instead of making multiple ones. Keeps all insights, discussions and etc in one spot and not multiple places.

Sorry, I had actually came back here to delete this thread after I thought about it before I read what you wrote. I was just at work my apologies. And thank you for correcting me. I will check out how to flash the U1.
