After breaking my "/efs" folder (IMEI) though a dodgy flash, I began looking at how to flash a new one (well, what's written on the sticker under the battery).
Finding that there is software and hardware combinations that can achieve this, hope was looking up, especially as my month old Galaxy S3 is uninsured.
"Universalbox" is one of the devices I stumbled across that can changet your IMEI number back to what it originally was, amoungst other stuff such as unlocking, but you needed to buy the $250 device, the $2 UART cable (have them both shipped to the UK) THEN pay the micropayment inside the software to achieve this.
I wish I had that kinda money, but sadly, being unemployed and living on my own doesn't allow for new gadgets very often at all.
HOWEVER. I popped into a mobile phone repair (and unlocking) shop and notices hundreds of UART cables on hangers on the wall. So I enquired about it.
I was quoted £15 which I really can't argue with, obviously they asked if it was stolen and I just said that all I want is to have the IMEI number that is on the sticker reapplied. Not asking for anything illegal, just to fix the software fault.
I get paid on Wednesday, so I'll let you all know how it goes.
tl;dr, If your IMEI number is screwed, ask around the local unlock shops.

If your IMEI number isn't the same as the one on the box, or sticker behind the battery, I'm afraid you'll have to go into a phone repair shop and tell them you need the IMEI restoring. That's assuming, like me, you don't have a backup.
At first I got the "We can't do that, it's probably stolen", but after explaining that it's just corrupted and all I want is it reverting back to the one written on the back of the phone, there wasn't a problem.
I'll let you know if my problem gets fixed tomorrow.
To find out what the device's current IMEI number is, either:
Open up the "Phone" application and dial in *#06#
or
Settings -> About Device -> Status

I got my samsung galaxy s2 this month. Everything is ok until the day before yesterday. When I try to make a call, it says "mobile network not available". I go to the setting--->wireless and network--->mobile networks--->select/unselect use packet data, there is no icon indicator it is activate as it should be. I tried the factory data reset, but the problem is still unsolved. Thus far, call/message stop working. Wifi is OK. Do you have any suggestion on that? Thanks.
Please check your IMEI, and your Baseband version.
If they are not available, you will need to restore your EFS, if you do not have a backup, you will have to visit Samsung Service Center, or repair the EFS yourself.
Do not use another phone's copy of EFS as it is illegal to modify or clone your IMEI number in most (if not all) countries. You can however use someone's EFS backup, and mod it with your phone's IMEI if you know how to.
Hi,
I'm in this horrible situation: no baseband, no IMEI. By ny chance, do you know how to get a EFS backup and change to my IMEI?
I appreciate any help. I was trying to make a call, the person on the other side could not hear me. I reboot and...lost my baseband. Checked IMEI, it was also missing.
Thanks

have u solved your problem? I got something quite similar...
In my sad experience, your only chance is going to Samsung and ask them to restore your IMEI. From what Samsung in BRazil told me, it should be in the same country of the device. As my device was imported from the UK, Samsung Brazil could not do anything, as IMEI database is Country restricted. I believe this info is correct as the representative was very helpful. It did not look like a lame excuse. If your device is not under warranty, it should not cost you more than U$ 50. That was the price here, and everything in Brazil is so expensive these days.
My solution was to buy another Galaxy S II in Brazil as it had been released here in between the time I imported mine and the time it got screwed.
Wish you good luck.

Wipe Data/factory reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik-Cache
Wipe Battery Stats
Install the wipe version of this ROM (CheckRom v4)
Any ideas?

I've got the same problem...
does anyone have came up with a good solution?
Try this
Root your phone.
Go to efs folder in root. Go to imei folder in that you will find a file named mps_code. Edit it using root browser from market. Erase everything and type your original imei no. and save it.
Reboot your phone and now check.
Cannot guarantee it but it worked on mine. Good luck

All I had to do to go to the Access Point Name ('APN') settings and change the Authentication Type from its default 'Not Set' to 'None'. After that, my internet is working fine.
It would appear this may be an issue common to a number of Chinese phones, so hopefully this will be of use to other people in the same situation.
Bought an I9300 s3 on eBay is locked to O2
Vodafone sim
Spoke to O2 no help at all. Call 202?
Doesn't make calls.
I've got an efs backup but from the 4.1.2 current stock.
Seems this won't downgrade to 4.1.1
Odined the stock 4.1.1 no joy. Won't boot.
Cwm an old miui 4.1.1 also no boot.
Odin back to stock unbranded 4.1.2 boots fine. Rooted cwm triangle away. Fine.
Whos is this phone? Apparently not mine.
How to down grade please?
Any help gratefully appreciated.
Super wipe after flashing rom helps.
Downgrade to 4.1.1 probably won't have SDS fix so may kill your phone.
If it doesn't make calls with O2 sim then IMEI may be blocked. It won't make calls on Vodafone, because it's locked to O2.
You have to factory reset if it wont boot.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 4
So you're saying after cwm the 4.1.1 I should full wipe.
Then the business.
Then flash a safe kernel before upgrading back.
If I just odin the 4.1.2 stock back over surely the brick bug won't activate?
Flash 4.1.1, full wipe. Do your unlocking, flash 4.1.2
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 4
This went badly wrong.
Flashed stock region correct. 4.1.1
Flashed chainfire cwm root.
To allow wipe
Booted fine.
The fix as follows doesn't work as the final menu still not available.
Just dial the following keys *#197328640#Main Menu[1] UMTS*[1] Debug Screen*[8] Phone Control*[6] Network Lock*Options [3]Perso SHA256 OFF*(after choosing this option, wait about 30 seconds, then go back one step by pressing the Menu button then select Back, now you are in*[6] Network Lock then choose*[4] NW Lock NV Data INITIALLIZ ..... wait for a minute then reboot your phone
Even though I didn't execute anything as that menu option isn't there something bad happened.
I installed galaxsimunlock from the play store.
It now says invalid imei.
Glad I backed that up.
Still locked.
The saga continues
I would try an O2 sim before anything to see if the phone actually works or not .
Blocked phone are blocked via IMEI and require the blocking network to remove the block .
Report phone stolen network block IMEI get new phone sell the now blocked phone is fairly typical .
jje
If I buy an unlock code on the Web or at a store will it sort of the blocking from the network?
Don't know anyone with a micro sim on O2.
Thanks for your times
Edit.
I flashed back to 4.1.2 its ok. The baseband doesn't get replaced on downgrade and isn't understood by the older software. There is a post somewhere here about it.
This is what causes the odd error messages in that unlock app. Currently says can't read nv
Unlock code will do nothing if the IMEI is blocked, the phone is useless.
Take it to a phone store, for a small fee they will tell you if it is locked or blocked.

Are you now saying the phone is blocked ???
If so return to the seller / Ebay .
Unlock code will not remove blocked IMEI .
Usual reason for a block is phone is stolen

I agree if it turns out to be blocked I will. It was PayPal so he must be verified.
But I still don't know anyone with a micro sim. Shame they're not all the same size now.
I was just checking ahead of time. I don't want to pay £15 for a code and it not work.
I work weekends so I'll have to wait until Monday.
Thanks everyone you're being very helpful. Much appreciated.
Good news everybody!
We've got a delivery to...
- found someone with an O2 micro sim.
Works fine on O2.
Seems I'll have to go pay for a code online or in one of those seedy little shops.
Seems a shame. As I can alter my /efs backup and presumably restore it back.
If only I knew which file/s to change.
It's not the most obvious one that contains only three letters O2U
Unless galaxsimunlock doesn't restore properly.

I agree galaxsim unlock would be great. But as it now flashes a red bar
"Unable to read nv data"
And offers no option to unlock or pay. Cos it says in the help that it doesnt know it can unlock the phone.
I'll have to wait for an upgrade.
odd thing, been trying to unlock my sgs2 so my bro can use it on O2 network, various apps (including the chainfire & helroz) have failed and on principle I really didn't want to pay EE £20 and wait 20(!) days for a code.
i started to think that maybe my efs had been corrupted, restored a backup but no change. and when searching i decided to check my imei on imei.info; it states that the phone is an I9300 Galaxy S III. i've never consciously changed the imei, but have probably used dozens of ROMs over the 2 years i had the phone; could they change the imei?
i'm currently using LK95-SimplisticPS-XXLSJ, which is pretty much stock, but i'm guessing that site doesn't care much for which ROM is on the phone, just the imei.
any advice or help? i'm kinda worried cos if the imei has changed thats possibly a hanging offence in uk.
many thanks
apes
EDIT: its the generic 004999010640000, so looks like i need EFS fix..
Try spocky's galaxsim app.
Strange...
Mine reports as:
Information about your phone
Model: I9100 Galaxy S II
Brand: SAMSUNG
IMEI: TAC: xxxxxx FAC: xx SNR: xxxxxx CD *
x'es are there to obfuscate my imei.
Have you tried to unlock it via GalaxSim Unlock?
See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...p-galaxsim-unlock-1-02-jb-compatible-t1846451
ps: there was an XDA ver. now seems pulled of cause' of testing etc.
thanks both, i'd tried both those but they failed.
but now solved. i adb'd backups of nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5 into /efs and it immediately connected to O2 (i have unregistered O2 sim in) and they've sent 2 texts setting it up for their network.
Hello everyone,
I have Samsung Galaxy S2 international GT-I9100. It fall into water. After that everything working fine excerpt IMEI null/null, Baseband Unknown, No SIM Card Detected. I exhibited it and dryed for a month. When I compiled it up again, same problem.

most probably your efs folder is corrupt or some hardware faulty. Do you have any sort of efs backup with you ?
If you have no backup, you're probably boned. Download as many stock roms as you can & start flashing. If that doesn't work, take it to a local mobile repair shop; many have equipment which can re-write the IMEI to the device fairly cheaply.
Thanks for answers, no I didn't make any backup for efs, so today I will start flashing all available ROMs for my country if this will not work I will take it to the service.
Messed up with my G925F!!!
Hello , my phone suddenly was not able to make or receive any calls or joining 3G/4G network or SMS. In other words, I was out of service although my SIM had not problems to enter the PIN password and I could see signal bars.
After a little research I discovered that my IMEI and S/N number had been changed! Especially, the IMEI number became 350000000000006 (fake one) And I believe this is the reason my signal went off!
So , I just managed to download smart switch from samsung and choose "emergency software recovery and initialization -> device initialization" in an attempt to revert it to stock rom and settings (is this method unroot the phone too?)
But after this long downloading finished , the phone didn't boot , I only see the samsung galagy s6 edge logo stuck!!!!
So , I decided to root the phone again , following the guide here (link-->), zidroid.com/how-to-install-twrp-root-galaxy-s6-edge-on-android-5-1-1/
(in short words , I installed the twrp recovery with odin and I flashed 2 zip files required, from an usb-otg-flash drive, via the twrp recovery install button) and then the phone booted normaly , but the problem with the signal and wrong IMEI was still there!
I feel that I am on dead end , I don't know what to do , I am thinking about sending it to the location I bought it but I am afraid that the warranty is lost.
Please help me restore my phone back to normal
After repeating the whole procedure several times , now my phone does not recognize SIM card at all , as if it was never inserted , wtf?

So you mean that there isn't any way of backing up the IMEI number first before rooting or changing a rom/kernel/recovery to the phone in order not allowing this IMEI bricking happen again by means of restoring from its backup?
I googled a lot and some people suggest that they can backup EFS in some way. What is EFS exactly and how it is related to IMEI?
Also wouldn't be a good idea to find a way to backup my entire OS/firmware (not just IMEI/EFS) before doing anything , in case to save money and avoid the same bricking?
And yes , I have sent the phone to samsung service , it will cost me around 320 euros , because they discovered I changed kernel/rooted the device , and they will change motherboard.
I cannot help the phone without being rooted , I love rooting but I cannot understand why suddenly IMEI got bricked.....does it worth to take risk and root my phone again? But I want IMEI or entire OS backups first before doing that and I don't know how to achieve this without rooting first...
Please help me if you could.
You can backup your full os using twrp recovery
Also your IMEI
In SAMSUNG devices imei number stored in efs partition that's why people asking take efs backup before flashing any Rom

I have taken it to factory settings 3 times no luck. I will try your process once I get me phone back.

I did contact one of those fellows a reputable one that can change your IEMI. Well once he heard that crazy IEMI number, he said because it was changed once before to something like he doubted he could change it again and save my phone. To try he charges 100 US plus I have shipping there and back. Yikes.
So any advice you can give me I would truly appreciate.

Mine went down recently with the exact same IMEI and no SN. TWRP was failing to restore the efs partition damaging the files in the process. Long story short, I had to manually extract the efs files, copy them across and fiddle about with permissions but I'm working again.
That nugget rings true - always backup the efs before changing anything.
But for that reputable fellow to say that the IMEI had been changed before because of what it had become, and insinuating that the imei couldn't be changed more than once was complete twaddle. I wouldn't trust him near any of my phones.
On a lighter note I'm sure there's got to be a member on here would sort it for beer tokens

Since this thread is quite old and people keep answering , I want to end it like this:
Back then I didn't avoid to pay about 300 euros to replace its motherboard to a samsung shop. But I learned lately that the issue was due to an app called "USB OTG Helper" (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.shajul.usbotg&hl=en) which allows you to insert NTFS USB flash drives to your OTG phone but also enables a system partition , including EMS files to be visible.
And you can guess what happened next , I deleted this system partition which this app made it visible and yes , my IMEI was gone!!! After some months , I repeated the same delete thing , but previously I had backed up via TWRP the EFS and MODEM partitions. My phone lost IMEI again , as expected , but after restoring EFS and MODEM , the IMEI was back!!
To sum up , never delete files or partitions that look like "system" like bluetooth and imei folders when you are root AND always have a backup of all your rom via twrp or something else before changing/deleting/flashing anything related to your system.
