[Q] SGS2 - imei code belongs to an s3?? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

odd thing, been trying to unlock my sgs2 so my bro can use it on O2 network, various apps (including the chainfire & helroz) have failed and on principle I really didn't want to pay EE £20 and wait 20(!) days for a code.
i started to think that maybe my efs had been corrupted, restored a backup but no change. and when searching i decided to check my imei on imei.info; it states that the phone is an I9300 Galaxy S III. i've never consciously changed the imei, but have probably used dozens of ROMs over the 2 years i had the phone; could they change the imei?
i'm currently using LK95-SimplisticPS-XXLSJ, which is pretty much stock, but i'm guessing that site doesn't care much for which ROM is on the phone, just the imei.
any advice or help? i'm kinda worried cos if the imei has changed thats possibly a hanging offence in uk.
many thanks
apes
EDIT: its the generic 004999010640000, so looks like i need EFS fix..

Try spocky's galaxsim app.

Strange...
Mine reports as:
Information about your phone
Model: I9100 Galaxy S II
Brand: SAMSUNG
IMEI: TAC: xxxxxx FAC: xx SNR: xxxxxx CD *
x'es are there to obfuscate my imei.
Have you tried to unlock it via GalaxSim Unlock?
See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...p-galaxsim-unlock-1-02-jb-compatible-t1846451
ps: there was an XDA ver. now seems pulled of cause' of testing etc.

thanks both, i'd tried both those but they failed.
but now solved. i adb'd backups of nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5 into /efs and it immediately connected to O2 (i have unregistered O2 sim in) and they've sent 2 texts setting it up for their network.

How to recover IMEI from generic?

Hi guys.
Here`s my problem.
My brother bought an international variant of the Galasy S3, i93000 a couple of days ago from an online auction website. To make the story short, after trying to figure out why the device isn`t connecting to ny carrier, I found that it had a generic IMEI. Go figure, got the same problem earlier this year with an SII.
The previous owner flashed it a few times, as it came with a variant of Jelly Bean, XXDLH8 I believe.
Flashed a stock open europe ICS (XXBLG8) and rooted it but still have the generic IMEI.
I found some threads online on how to rewrite your IMEI code back, since it is written on the back of the phone and on the box, but it only applies to the Verizon version of the S3. I need to access *#7284# and select something that isn`t there on my device. And using a piece of software called NV reader/writer, you edit your IMEI directyly on your phone. It has to be put in the correct form, but it is possible.
My question is, how can we edit our IMEI code on the international version of the SIII ? Don`t get me wrong, I don`t want to modify it all the time, just trying to get it back to how it was.
Sending back to waranty isn`t an option as the previous owner bought it from another country, and also he now refuses to answer my calls.
I`ll have to mention that the device isn`t stolen, it has the Samsung generic IMEI, which wouldn`t be a problem ig it wasn`t blocked by my carrier.
I know have a really expensive device that isn`t more than an iPod. My brither doesn`t even want to see it anymore.
It has to be a way we can restore our IMEI via nv_data.bin and a HEX editor.
You can not be sure that this phone wasn't stolen. Previous user could wipe or modify efs partition to not be tracked by IMEI. Or he just broke efs while flasing and sold the phone because he couldn't fix it.
The warranty is valid throughout the whole European Union, not only in country where the phone was purchased. But you did not write where the phone was purchased nor where you live.
You can serch your internal sd card, maybe there is a backup of efs folder. If not, you can try to use some tools to restore correct IMEI to nv_data.bin from .nv_data.bak (EFS Pro or similar).
You could also try this manual solution:

or this

i9.0.1.3k galaxy imperator
Hi there.
Yes, I can be sure that the phone isn`t stolen as it has all the necessary paperwork to prove it.
Regarding your suggested fixes, I`ve already tried the first one, restoring from the .bak files with no success.
Also I read the second one earlier and I can`r apply it as my nv_data.bin file doesn`t have even have the lines mentioned in the tutorial. It says that I have to edit line 0188008, but my files goes from 0188001 straight to 0188014.
I`ve found a tutorial over at http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f606/tutorial-galaxy-s3-backup-restore-imei-without-root-1513909/ (sorry for the external link if they aren`t permitted) but it applies to the Verizon version (I believe) with the Qualcomm cpu. When I dial *#7284# on my device I only have the 2 sections with 2 options each. UART where I can select Modem or PDA, and USB with the same two option. Because of this, the app NV reader/writer can`t access my device.

[Q] Need help. GT-i9300 network problems + sn = 00000000000

Hi All,
I have accidentially bought Galaxy S3 GT-i9300 in China. Device came with Hong Kong 4.0.4 firmware. Unfortunatelly i could not fully test it because i didn`t have a micro-sim. It is international version called I9300GSMH.
I returned home, made a backup of EFS with EFS Pro and flashed 4.1.2 Poland into my new toy.
After that i immediately got several problems:
1) IMEI is OK and legal, but SN = 00000000000. That means no network and no phone calls. Fixed quickly with "special modem", but not sure if it was the best way.
Is it possible to repair SN if i know it? Does it make any sense by the way?
2) GPS is not working at all. GPS Tool doesn`t see any satellite. Neither GPS no Glonass.
Have no idea how to fix it and why this sh,,t happened.
3) Wi-Fi range = 30 cm. My router is Dlink DIR655. Other Samsung devices work with it up to 15 meters around. This one - 30cm. Tried to change settings, apply fix - no result. My S3 can see all wireless networks around, even located on the different floor of the building... but it can`t connect to any of them with "passwor wrong" message. Put it right on the router and problem disappers. WTF???
My S3 came from Hong Kong, but it doesn`t accept China/HK firmwares. Odin stops on flashing the modem stage. Actually, for some reason, it can`t flash China/HK modems. My S3 accepts any of european FW/Modem, but not chinese, where it actually came from.
Now some surgery. /EFS and /Factory folders are different (how could that be?) Files NV_data.bin and NV_data.md5 are different in those folders. Actually approx 300 bytes are different.
NV_data.bin and .NV_data.bak are totally different and they have different dates of creation.
That is it. Have no idea what to do with this phone. It works as a phone with the patched modem, but no WIFI, no GPS, etc.
I will appreciate any help on this case.
Thank you in advance.

Thanks, but it is already done. My S3 doesn`t work with GSM network without Ariza patch. "Special modem" i meant Ariza patch for modem. That is the only way i know to make SN=00000000000 device work with GSM.
Any ideas why i`m having GPS and Wi-Fi problems? May be HongKong phone has slightly different hardware which is not 100% compatible with European firmwares?
Sounds like a convincing looking fake or a store demo unit etc.
Nothing is going to help, if it was a workable fake your going to need the custom firmware, the criminals used originally to build it.
Can you post a screen shot of the system info and pics of the actual phone?
Personally I'd just take it to a mobile repair shop to get it looked at and to get a proper answer.

I don`t think it is fake because system information looks like genuine samsung except sn=00000000000. also i can upload samsung firmware to it and it works except GPS and Wi-Fi. Under the battery there is a label containing Model = GT-I9300, real IMEI and SN.
Another question is modem. Telephone came from HK or China. I can flash it with HK firmware to return it to original state, but modem remains XX - europe. When i flash only chinese modem Odin fails with "bootloader blocked modem update" or something like that.
Smells fake .
Try the Chinese thread .

Why do you think it is fake? Fake phone has different firmware and not compatible with Samsung.
I have checked deviceinfo as well. It is genuine Samsung...
Can someone share deviceinfo from the International GT-i9300 ? I want to compare, may be some IC chips are different and i am simply using incompatible firmware...

Exactly same situation in Argentina.
I bought a SGS3 and after full charge battery and backup EFS I flash the Poland 4.1.2. After that i can´t connect to GSM network and my serial numer is 00000000000
Is not a fake. I bought from a recognized operator.
Then I flash an ICS 4.0.4 ARO (ARO = Samsung official roms for Argentina)
Now I looking for the Ariza solution, but I fear to have the same problems descripted here, cause I have the same facts.
So ¿Any questions to this post answers?
Thanks people, for that who live away from big cities is impossible go to a technical service.
Update. I`ve also got i9100 aka Galaxy S2. After official (no grey market, no sim-unlocks, no root, no odin, etc) update via Kies it shows same SN=00000000000, but everything is OK. GSM, 3G, WiFi, Bt, Gps - all parts work as they should work without any problems or applying any patches!!! That means problem is not in SN=00000000000. This zero SN is probably just a sign of the different problem.
same problem

No IMEI = return to seller possible stolen phone . Take to service centre .
Modem does not fix IMEI .
IMEI restore is only by restoring your backed up EFS folder .

If your phone has only empty/broken IMEI. You may send it to any service center. It is very easy to reprogram EFS and repair IMEI if you have original IMEI on the phone label.
In my case nothing worked but IMEI was correct and here is step by step instruction )
Step 1. Find working 2nd hand 9300 motherboard ($130 in my country).
Step 2. Replace motherboard.
Step 3. Ta-da.

Broken IMEI?

After breaking my "/efs" folder (IMEI) though a dodgy flash, I began looking at how to flash a new one (well, what's written on the sticker under the battery).
Finding that there is software and hardware combinations that can achieve this, hope was looking up, especially as my month old Galaxy S3 is uninsured.
"Universalbox" is one of the devices I stumbled across that can changet your IMEI number back to what it originally was, amoungst other stuff such as unlocking, but you needed to buy the $250 device, the $2 UART cable (have them both shipped to the UK) THEN pay the micropayment inside the software to achieve this.
I wish I had that kinda money, but sadly, being unemployed and living on my own doesn't allow for new gadgets very often at all.
HOWEVER. I popped into a mobile phone repair (and unlocking) shop and notices hundreds of UART cables on hangers on the wall. So I enquired about it.
I was quoted £15 which I really can't argue with, obviously they asked if it was stolen and I just said that all I want is to have the IMEI number that is on the sticker reapplied. Not asking for anything illegal, just to fix the software fault.
I get paid on Wednesday, so I'll let you all know how it goes.
tl;dr, If your IMEI number is screwed, ask around the local unlock shops.
You must be crazy to pay for it, did you try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31909056 or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33827741

If your IMEI number isn't the same as the one on the box, or sticker behind the battery, I'm afraid you'll have to go into a phone repair shop and tell them you need the IMEI restoring. That's assuming, like me, you don't have a backup.
At first I got the "We can't do that, it's probably stolen", but after explaining that it's just corrupted and all I want is it reverting back to the one written on the back of the phone, there wasn't a problem.
I'll let you know if my problem gets fixed tomorrow.
To find out what the device's current IMEI number is, either:
Open up the "Phone" application and dial in *#06#
or
Settings -> About Device -> Status

Is there a Mac version perchance that works with the GT-I9300?

[Q] SGS3 unlocked Only works with certain carriers after flashing!

After flashing and thinking my EFS was damaged it seems that my network carrier has locked my IMEI
I first flashed MIUI and it worked perfectly, then I flashed LiteStock Rom and I got trouble with modem, I restored EFS and installed a new modem and it worked.
But finally I installed a new rom and I had the sign "Not registered on network". I flashed lots of stock roms and restored EFS, checked my IMEI and SN were the right ones and kept having the same error.
I had another rom of a OMV carrier (Tuenti from Spain) and it worked perfectly.
The thing is that Tuenti uses the same network as my current carrier Movistar, so if the IMEI was locked it wouldn't work with tuenti either.
¿Does anybody know what happens to my Galaxy? ¿Could it be that my carrier locked my IMEI for flashing roms?
Please help, I don't know what to do, my phone works with any other carrier that it is not mine, tested lots of simcards and that is what happens, I also have a friend that had the same problem, he took the phone to a shop to unlock it and he couldn't use the phone because in the shop I think they unlocked it via root and galaxyunlock app.
Blocked IMEI by network is due to theft .
Reads more like wrong modem or CSC see faqs and guides .
Wow, thank you, I did not see any of that about galaxy S3.
Will try that solution!

[Q] Official network unlock not working i9300

Hi everyone,
I come to you as I am a noob as far as twinkering with my gt i9300 goes and I think I messed it up big time.
Here is what I did :
I had android 4.2.1 on my gt i9300, the stock rom from sfr (french career).
I network unlocked it using my career official unlock code, which worked great. It recognized my japanese career sim very well (i am in japan now).
Then I got greedy and wanted to update my android version so I downloaded a 4.4 android rom from I don't remember well, and a cwm manager.
The network unlock worked fine at first but after a restart it did not work anymore. It asked me for a network unlock pin.
I thought it was asking for a sim pin at first, which my sim did not have as I hadn't set one. I got mad trying sim pin code and gave up. Had I given it the network unlock code instead of possible sim pin code it might have worked but I will never know.
Then I tried to solve the problem installing android 5.1 cyanogen version but I had the same problem except this time I understood it was asking for the network unlock code. The problem is that when I fed it to him, it did not work, the request was unsuccessful.
So I looked for a solution on internet and found all kind of things:
I read about restoring the efs partition, but i do not have any back up.
I read about installing a stock rom version, change the csc and retry the official network unlock code, but it does not work, whether I restore through Kies (which gives me a vodafone version) or manually (with an sfr version, french vodafone it seems).
I read about installing Galaxy simunlock app after rooting the phone and installing userbox, but it tells me that my locking system is not handled as it is too new.
I upgraded, downgraded, rooted in every possible way but nothing works.
I am running out of solution and I therefore turn to you for help, hoping you will be more creative than me.
I have the official network unlock code, the phone, no back up of any kind and really little hope.
Thank you in advance for any help you could give me !
Have a nice day !
Sadly you didn't make a backup of efs. That should be first thing before playing with customs.
Oh well, I suppose your efs may be screwed up due to entering couple times bad network unlock key.
I suggest go to next corner GSM shop and pay 2400JPY for efs fixing and perm sim unlock. But before that, check your IMEI and serial number are correct. Thay can fix all of this in one step.
You need to do this via box, you can't reprogram that or fix yourself because you did everything that may help and you still have a problem. You can't use any software on efs v2. It will not work.

Thank you for your quick answer !
I will follow your advice and go to a "professional".
However I don't understand how they are able to do what I can't, do they have special softwares or anything ?
I would like to know because I do have the official unlock code.
Also, I would still like to upgrade to android 5.1 cyanogen version, do you think it will be possible after such a modification ?
I should not encounter any risk if I backup the efs beforehand right ?
Thank you again
Service will connect your phone to, so called, box, ie Z3X Box. This is some kind of pc-phone bridge hardware which can alow to decrypt and encrypt efs files, fix IMEI, serial number, flash firmware, IMEI certificate, remove network locks, sim locks etc.
Of course you can backup your efs now but it is corrupted and useful. Backup this partition after repair. Than you will be able to flash anything you want. Even CM12.1,no problem.

Ok I understand better now.
Thank you very much for your answers, they have been really helpful !
Do not let them plug your phone to the box if you want to install 4.4 or 5.0 because if you give them they will replace your imei number with a clon imei number and you will stuck with max 4.3 and you need to install a patched modem and kernel every time you format your phone... tell them to try to fix without replacing your imei number first. Replacing the imei number should be the last thing to do...
Why do you think they will clone his phone's IMEI? It's even illegal.
If someone doesn't know how to use box than he should not work in GSM service.
You can rewrite original IMEI and serial number without cloning anything.
An probably IMEI is fine, it's network lock problem.

Most repair shops dont care its legal or not. Also most costumers dont know this kind of things and as long as phone is working its okay for them. Mine is just a warning to make him look like he knows this things so repairman doesnt do something with no going back...
