Mms problems - AT&T LG Optimus G

Hey everyone, I've been looking around the forum for different solutions but can't find anything. I just switched to the optimus g from an iPhone, now I can't get any Mms from anyone. I can send them to no problem but can't receive any, no fixes from the forums here or online have been able to help. I'm running the stock os and using go sms.

What have you tried??
First move is to check, double check apn settings.
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app

I've tried different apps as a messaging service, changes all the different settings for Mms. I've made sure all my apn settings are correct and manually entered them in to go sms. I've even called my provider and they haven't been able to help.

Is data enabled in the connectivity-> mobile networks settings?
I also see your carrier is Telus? Are you using an E970?
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app

You probably forgot to turn data on. With the iPhone, it's always on unless you turn it off so you probably don't think of it. But yeah, to get MMS, you have to have data on, just like on the iPhone
EDIT: I also realize TangoXray just said this lol

At first I thought it had to do with data being off but even with it on and no data restrictions nothing is working. I'm on Telus have the 973 version.

Have you check in the Canadian forum? There may be something specific to the E973 device or to Telus (carrier help desks can be far from helpful), that someone in that forum knows about.

I would check with the carrier again also. My aunt got a new phone and couldn't receive mms. Took at&t a couple days to figure out exactly what was wrong (which was something with how her account was set up that was beyond the level of the store people and L1 tech support).

HTC Amaze APN Settings Locked on Wind Mobile and MMS functioning intermittently

Hi all,
couldn't find a Wind network specific forum, so I'm posting here...
I've now had two phones on Wind and on both, MMS is not a simple, straightforward functioning option.
Nexus one: gave up in frustration trying to get mms working after tinkering with all suggested settings.
Now I own an HTC amaze...mms works periodically. People sometimes receive my texts (and sometimes only twelve hours later even when sitting right in front of me and on Wind or any other carrier network) and sometimes they don't. Why is it so difficult to get MMS working smoothly on Wind?
I just tried to change the APN settings and...they're locked. Any ideas how to unlock them?
Also, I'd appreciate settings that others have found that works on their Amaze (not sure if settings get different results on different phones...i imagine they wouldn't, but from hearing how some of you have it working perfectly...i wonder)?
Thanks.

just one apn for both mms and internet?
I have had issues with my previous, unlocked T mobile phone on Wind, however, my new Amaze on Wind seems to be fine, as far as I know anyway.
Does locked APN's have anything to do with SIM lock?
Once I can get my SIM unlock code from Wind will my APN"s also come unlocked at the same time?
Thanks very much

[Q] T-Mobile Vibrant, Straight Talk, MMS

Does ANYONE have T-Mobile Vibrant with working MMS on Straight Talk? I've tried dozens of APN combinations, and to no avail. My 3g works, but MMS won't send, and won't receive. I've been trying for two weeks now. I take that back, I've been able to receive ONE mms message. One.

Make sure you have data enabled whenever you receive one.
Data has been enabled with every APN. I've also rebooted after I switch APNs, and then verified that they remained after the phone starts back up. Any form of troubleshooting regarding every basic setting has been attempted.

In other words, nothing I've tried has worked. so basically short of another t-mobile vibrant user, using straight talk with working MMS, telling me their settings, I'm basically out of options.

so i have just switched over to straight talk and i also have a samsung vibrant from tmo, on froyo. how did you get your data working? ive tried teakker, etc. and nothing has worked for me. i really dont want to root my phone but im thinking thats another option so that i can change the apn options somehow and use what the other straight talk tmo users are using (which is not what they give you on the activation card)
feel so helpless
I have been thinking of going to straight talk, couple questions
1. Do you have to request a tmo sim card from straight talk?
2. Do you need to be unlocked?
3. Do they charge activation?
I didn't mean to "hijack" ur thread but I figured you guys could answer this. Thanks

MMS sending problems

Hey guys, I just came off of the Galaxy Note to the S3. I never keep the data option enabled all day because of the battery drain, plus I just manually update all my sync'd apps anyway so there's no need for it to drain my battery & use up my pre paid credits at the same time.
My problem is this. With the galaxy note when I would go to either send or receive an MMS I wouldnt have to have my data connection permanently on. It would automatically enable the connection to send or recieve the incoming MMS, download the pic for me then automatically disconnect it when it was done. No muss no fuss. The GS3 does not automatically enable data to retrieve ur messages, you instead get a little download button in ur text you have to click. Problem is even after I enable data and click download to retrieve my mms, 95% of the time nothing happens, no activity is shown that the pic is actually being downloaded and you just end up staring at the screen for an hour until you get bored and turn it off, without your mms.
Is there a setting somewhere or something I can hack that will turn on the feature that will automatically enable data to retrieve your mms just like I had on the note? Its a bit hard to believe they'd have it on there then disable it on their brand new one. Not everyone likes to have data on all day :|
Thanks guys
Do you have Auto-Retrieve set to on in the messaging app? Just checking.

Hey, I had the same problem and I just fixed it. it will take you about 10 seconds.
1. go to mobile networks in wireless and networks.
2. choose access point names
3. menu button and choose New APN.
4. Im on AT&T so this is what I put (may be different if you have some other carrier)
Name: ATT PHONE
APN: Phone
that's all you have to put, everything else will already have values in there so dont change them.
5. once youre done with this just choose the APN you just created and your MMS will work.
**If you have a carrier other than AT&T then maybe this will work exactly the same, just find a phone with the same carrier and copy what's already there.
Thanks for the tip jon, however it still didnt work for me

Oh, that explains it. you could probably use the same method but copy the info from another phone using the Optus network. for example, here in the US, AT&T has several settings that I can choose from so if one doesn't work I can switch to another (which I did by inputting the info manually)
Maybe Optus has more than one setting so you can just use another. borrow a smartphone from someone and see what settings they have, if its different than what you're using now, try the one they have.
Hi
I also have this issue but it is important to note that there is nothing wrong with the MMS settings. The problem is caused by the S3 requiring Mobile Networking to be active to send and receive MMSs, but I choose to keep Mobile Network disabled unless I specifically wish to use it.
On my previous mobile of another make, even with Mobile Network disabled, the network would come to life to send and receive MMSs and then switch off again. The S3 does not behave this way and needs the Mobile Network to be specifically enabled manually.
This is an irritation! I would love to know if anyone has a fix or workround for this.
So.. there isn't a work around because its how they designed the phone eh. Is it something that they can tweak in a custom rom? Or do I just have to wait until the release the new galaxy note and hope they they put it back in again?

are you on AT&T? If so, with the Galaxy S the problem is not with your phone's settings but on AT&T's end. turns out that sometimes your phone just disconnects from their network and they have to reset it--takes the only about 2 minutes to do over the phone.
It's on US Cellular, calling then would fix it though?

Im not sure how US Cellular works. I have AT&T. before you called them you can check your settings and make sure mobile data is turned on and you can also check your APN settings. on my GS2 I have 2 settings for APN, one is AT&T the other is Cingular. on my Wife's GS3 she was having MMS issues so I added a second APN to her phone and it worked--for a while then it happened again, called AT&T and it was something on their end.

[Q] Straight Talk AT&T APN Settings

I cannot for the life of me get Straight Talk data or MMS working. Phone calls and text work perfectly though.
I bought it online from Swappa, completely stock and followed the Straight Talk instructions that came with the SIM. I never got anything, not even a hint of data. Browsers would immediately say no connection, pic messages would just spin and nothing would happen.
So I went online and tried every single APN that people said "This worked for me," tried them all, restart-my-phone party-2013 and still nothing no connection ever.
So I thought maybe it was the AT&T stock image that wasn't letting me connect. I just flashed to Vanilla Rootbox and have been trying APN settings for the past hour or so. Still nothing, nothing ever changes. My signal has full bars but says ROAM. Which is odd because my brother has AT&T Straight Talk and gets data just fine in the same location I am now.
Am I missing something? Mobile Data is enabled, I've tried enabling data roaming multiple times to no effect.
What could possibly be the issue?

Yeah those were some of the first ones I tried on both the stock and on this ROM.
I enter them, restart my phone, when I open Chrome it just immediately says
"You are offline. Wi-Fi and mobile data are turned off."
Which is not true, because settings clearly shows Data is enabled in two different places. This is so frustrating.
Is there any way to check to make sure the radio that enables data is still working? I've thought about taking it in to the AT&T store to have them test it because I'm about out of ideas about what it could be.

Hello back everyone. I solved the issue!
It wasn't a problem with my APN settings, it ended up being a problem in the activation of my SIM card with straight talk.
I went through the port process and got my number moved to straight talk and my calls and texts were working fine so I figured it was a matter of just fiddling with the APN settings until I found some that worked. I had heard so many stories about this being the case. Unfortunately, in my case it wasn't true. I tried everything.
Good news is: I called Straight Talk and asked them what else I could do. They walked me through settings the APN settings, which was super frustrating, I literally had the correct settings memorized at this point. Then they asked me what phone I had. I told the CSR and she said "okay, I switched something on our side, restart your phone and see if it works." I was dubious because I had done this so many times but I guess she wasn't lying to me because I restarted and it has worked fine from then on.
tl;dr AT&T Optimus G works great on Straight Talk with an AT&T sim. Just call them if the provided APN doesn't work.
For anyone else with this problem:
I was having a similar issue after just switching (from a working Nokia Lumia 520) to a new LG Optimus G. In my case, the APN settings from my old phone (and the site I got them from) appeared to be out of date.
I went to the Straight Talk site, logged in, and went to Support -> HOW TO UPDATE DATA SETTINGS, entered my phone number and selected Android 4+. This gave me some different settings that are now working correctly.

apn missing mms protocol settings

Hi this is an odd one, but here goes. I am on Solavei and have to manually set apns well recently after reflash, the apn setting for mms protocol is completely missing. Checked the factory tmobile apns and they don't show it either. I have no idea how this happened but it's driving me crazy. I've reset and flashed 3 different roms all with the same issue. Any ideas or input would be much appreciated. As a result of no mms protocol, I can no longer send or receive mms.
wow apparently I stumped everyone. Or my question isn't clear?

In your mobile networks find the APN names. If there is no explicit MMS section, there is a PROTOCOL section or something like it where you would add "mms" in the new APN you would create.
This page will give some basic insight, but might not need to be followed exactly--tailor to your needs.

lol at the previous poster doing exactly the same thing ... again. You guys, the problem isn't what setting to use OR where to use the setting. The problem is there is literally no place to put in the setting that you need. The field "MMS Protocol" is not there.... you simply cannot enter the information that you need to. It's obvious that it's in the APN settings where you can change all the other related fields. Funny how two years apart, people are not reading and spewing the same stuff...

Maybe the rom's don't have that setting? Same thing if you create a new APN?
Correct, it is not in the default APN nor available when creating a new APN. Unfortunately, I am stuck with a phone that has no custom roms at the moment. The question is whether this setting is actually missing (not displayed) AND unsupported (not implemented) or whether it is simply missing (not displayed) in the rom. There seems to be very little online that I can find about this other than threads which mention that the "MMS protocol" should be x, y, z for the APN of a particular network. Basically, all my searches turn up nothing as to "why" this is missing and whether (or not) there is anything that can be done about it.

Carrier probably crippled the feature in their factory rom--which means it is available, but not displayed--they don't want anyone messing with it.
So all you gotta do is find how to edit the file in which that information is stored, and I bet it's really easy.
Good luck.

While I don't disagree with you that there is probably a file somewhere that deals with this...I disagree that it is easy. That is, it would be easy...if the information on how to do it and/or where to find it were actually easy to find
I also disagree that this is simply due to a carrier-based rom. First reason is that this phone is an international, factory unlocked phone and the rom comes directly from the manufacturer. While it's possible that manufacturers themselves don't want you to change this setting, that would explain the second problem I have. I have a slightly older phone with a custom rom which also doesn't have this setting. It's possible that phone doesn't support that setting anyhow...but I don't feel like buying a bunch of other phones just to look into this one thing.
Anyway... none of this stuff about *me* is actually even relevant. I think our discussion still doesn't help people find what they are looking for. So, let's leave it at that and maybe someone will stop by here sooner than later and know the answer (and then also post the answer) about if this is "unlockable" or it's permanently missing for whatever reason.

Then the factory was very lucky in locking in just precisely the APN you need in your country for your carrier. That doesn't sound like an unlocked international device to me.
See if there is a way to add a new APN specifically for MMS. MMS settings can be excluded from APN because they are meant to be in a separate APN.

Sorry...not sure I follow the relationship here... And unlocked phone is not attached to a carrier. I bought it unlocked, unattached to a carrier, and I am using it on a carrier here, without the need to unlock it. How exactly does that mean that the factory locked something on it...
Just because there is no "MMS protocol" setting in the APN settings doesn't mean my phone is completely gimped.

I created a new APN with just mms in the "APN type", saved, went back in to edit and see no difference in the available settings. On the APN selection screen, this particular APN did not have a "checkbox" on the right side, so it was different due to the APN type.

I'm glad you gave it a try.
Every carrier's APN's are different--a factory unlocked phone has to allow for changes to the APN and one can only assume, to the MMSC. Did you put the other APN settings in yourself?
Have you asked the factory or tried support from the manu?
What kind of phone do you have--Amaze 4G? Which region?
It's been years and I'm having the same issue, has anyone found the solution?
Edit: By years I mean this thread, not me having the issue.
I have a S7 Edge.
In the APN Settings, there seems to be everything except the option for MMS Protocol. :/
This is the first time I've seen someone with my exact problem...it appears no one has the answer yet? OP, did you ever figure it out?

Hi this is an odd one, but here goes. I am on Solavei and have to manually set apns well recently after reflash, the apn setting for mms protocol is completely missing. Checked the factory tmobile apns and they don't show it either. I have no idea how this happened but it's driving me crazy. I've reset and flashed 3 different roms all with the same issue. Any ideas or input would be much appreciated. As a result of no mms protocol, I can no longer send or receive mms.

Hi. I am having the same issue with my Lenovo 503LV. There is no MMS setting present in the menus.
