I've had the same problem with a different device, and never found an answer.
In fact, I trade that phone (Evo 3D) for this S2 (i777).
Heres the thing, for some reason my phone refuses to work on the school's wifi. Its annoying. On my last phone, I thought that it was just that phone, but apparently its not. Now I'm having the same problem on my S2. I can get notifications every now and then but cant use the wifi at all. Sometimes, randomly throughout the day, I can get about 1 - 5 minutes out of it, but then it just stops working again.
I kinda think it has something to do with my Gmail being synced or something, I really have no clue. It has the word "freaking" in it. I just dont think its a coincidence that BOTH phones in a row have the exact same problem. I didnt have the problem with any iPhone I've ever had.
I really need wifi, and I dont wanna get a new phone, so I would appreciate it a lot if some knew what this is about.
It connects and everything. Says it has great signal. Just doesnt work.
Im running the stable CM9.1, straight from the Cyanogenmod website. So its their kernel and all that good stuff. Android 4.0.4.
I know the ROM isnt the problem cause every ROM I flashed on my Evo didnt help at all.
Anyway, any help or tips anyone can give would be great. Thanks!
By the way, the wifi works perfectly fine every where else. Home, College, friend's house. etc.
You need to verify your school does not require special network settings or a proxy.
If you can see the network and connect then its just a settings issue. Have you tried reverting to stock?

I can connect just fine, as normal. It just doesn't allow me internet access.
By stock, do you mean the stock ICS Touchwiz? No. But I guess its worth a try. The only reason I didnt see that as a solution is because on my last phone, I had the same problem whether I was running stock or not.
It sounds like you need a proxy address to access the Internet at your school. Talk to the administrators of the network.

They have proxies restricted from what I know. I dont know too much about proxies, but I tried using a few different proxy apps and none of them worked.
And it doesnt do this to other peoples' phones. Why is it just mine? My other phone was an HTC on Sprint. It just seems like a weird coincidence that both phones have the same problem, and they're two completely different devices. That's why I thought it had to do with Gmail, I know that sounds stupid, but its the only thing the two phones have in common.

At the University I attend it connects but when I try to access Internet it asks me to login my student account. So just because it "connects" doesn't necessarily mean it's connected there may be an extra step after

Two different phones and same issue. Friends phones work but yours doesn't. You have a PICNIC issue.
Problem in chair not in computer (phone). Talk to the network admin or help desk. You're probably using a wrong setting or password. The admin should be able to help you by looking at the logs.

I get what you're saying, believe me, but I just dont see how its a wrong setting. Its default settings ( until I tinkered around trying to fix it). I assume all of my less-knowledgeable friend's phones are default settings too. So it just doesn't seem to make sense that the default settings on two of my phones are the wrong settings, while every other phone seems to have it right to begin with.
I get what your saying, but I cant just talk to our Tech Guy at our school. It just doesnt work like that at my school. Lol. Thats why I'm asking for help on here.
And I dont think the multiple ROMs I've tried have the wrong defaults also.
Then sit down with a friend and make sure EVERY setting Is the same. Make sure you are both running android and using the same browser. If they are on CM too that would be best.
It sounds like something is blocking you from accessing the Internet while on the schools network. I don't think we will be of much help.

I can try the thing with my friend. Im just really the only one in my group of friends that's into, and actually knows a lot about Android devices. So they dont seem like much help. Haha.
And I was hoping people could tell me some ideas I havent tried yet. I know Android, but I dont know much about wireless networks and all that.
I'd love to help more, but since only one wifi network doesn't work for you it has to be something with that network.

Do you need to log in to your school's network? If so, when you enter your login id, if there's a line for anonymous id too, add your login id there as well. In other words, you have to enter your login id twice. Once where it says "login id" and again for "anonymous id."
If that doesn't work, what would help here is more info about how you connect (WPS, WPA, etc.).

It doesn't require me to log in at all. It worked perfectly fine on my old iPhone without having to log in. And it never redirected me in the browser. I've tried everything I can think of.
Proxies (Dont work)
I've tried static IP.
Factory resetting to stock Android (Every time I restart my phone it works for like a minute.)
BUT, I think I came across something. I compared my settings to a friend's, and his phone showed a different IP address. I'm still not sure if it was the IP to his phone, or to the school. How do I find out which IP is which?
Can anyone explain why it works for a minute or two and then stops?
Have you tried going to: Settings->wifi->advanced (you get to advanced by clicking the menu button) to make sure that:
Keep wifi on during sleep: ALWAYS
Avoid poor connections: UNCHECKED
Frequency band: AUTO
Wifi Region: United States
You may want to uncheck wifi optimization.
Oh, one other thing: you aren't using any battery optimization apps are you? JuiceDefender etc? If so, follow their instructions for uninstalling and uninstall!
Beyond that, I haven't got a clue. And no, your IP address has nothing to do with it. It should be different from your friend's.

It seems that Samsung Dive only works on my sgs2 when either the wifi or the network data mode is enabled on the device. What's worse is that if the "Wireless Networks / View Location in Maps" option is disabled, it will ask to be enabled while tracking the device.
Practically making Samsung Dive uesless.
Is there a fix for this? I've flashed a few ROMs but I'm back on stock, I never had this problem before flashing ROMs. Thanks.

I'm curious how you expect it to work without some kind of data connection.
Regarding your point about being asked for permission, if on KK5 at least, if you freeze the Network Location apk (com.google.android.location), the prompt does not appear and it does not seem to inhibit your ability to use GPS correctly.

Sorry if I made myself unclear, what I mean is that the user has to manually enable wifi or 3g to be able to use SD. So if the phone is lost, there's nobody there to enable 3g/wifi, so SD won't work.
You weren't unclear. How would you like it to communicate with the phone with no data connection?

Before I flashed ROMs SD would activate my 3g (when it was already off), then activate my wireless networks / location option, ten activate my GPS, then find my device. But now all it does is sits there, trying to connect, until i manually enable wifi or 3g, which it will then ask me to enable my wireless netoworks / location, and then it doesn't do anyting.
OP, you make no sense. You didn't answer to oinkylicious's question: how can SD reach your phone if it can't connect to it? It's almost impossible, so yes, someone has to be there to enable data or wifi. It was always like this and it will always be like this with the current technology .
About manually activating the tracking system, I also have my doubts. I only tried this several months ago, but then it showed my location without asking me to enable tracking. I'm on CM7 now, so I can't test it.
Alternatives: theft aware can do the same thing (now quite good, but it works) via SMS. You just send the code to your phone, and it gives you the location.

You still haven't answered my question. Also, could you provide some proof that this works on the other phone with all forms of data turned off, as it intuiges me.
If it works on an older ROM, revert until "fixed". If it doesn't, use an app controlled via SMS.

Hey all,
I am a previous Galaxy S user and now have the S III. I know my way around Android OS but am STUMPED here!
When wi-fi is OFF (mobile network), Google Play store wont render any images whatsoever. I can still get to apps, read description and buy them, but no images. Every now and then I get a "Error: no connection" error when previewing an app but when I retry it works (still no images though) - "Couldn't load Screenshots - retry"
The same is true for Foursquare and one or two other apps. I am not in a bad area - perfect reception and HSDPA.
Twitter and others do not have this problem, but the apps that do experience it are doing so continuously and without fail. I can not stop it happening, unless using Wi-Fi, which is not so often as I am moving around a lot.
I have cleared cache/data from several applications in the list, restarted phone etc etc.. I am avoiding having to do a hard reset here as much as possible as I have to travel this week and do not have time to re-do my all my apps etc etc..
Is there a way to clear DNS cache or something on these phones? It seems as though when using regular mobile network, certain apps get stuck and can't receive certain data while others have no issues whatsoever.
Please help guys - any suggestions are much appreciated!!
Thanks,
Wit

Wish I could give you a finite solution but I never really came right with this until I installed a custom Rom on my phone. Running stock I always had issues with the images in the play sore. I'm with Vodacom down here so dunno if it's network related.
If you go with a custom Rom I highly recommend the final ICS FoxHound 1.4.4 release. Been through many roms and this is by far the best as a daily runner.
Hope you come right man!

Hi buddy,
If you haven't found any solution yet:
I too am using Vodafone Mumbai network and started facing this problem quite recently (could have been just after I flashed LI5 ROM).
Anyway I scoured the net for solutions and found nothing that helped. So through some trial and error I found this solution:
Go to APN screen where you should have two APNs: "www" and "portalnmms".
Hit menu button and click on "Reset to defaults".
Then select "portalnmms" as the default APN.
Solved all issues for me!
I am having this exact same issue. Using Vodafone 3G in Mumbai on a Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Tried to set "portalnmms" as default APN but can't. Tried changing the "www" proxy to 8.8.8.8 but that didn't work at all. Is there a solution here?
8.8.8.8 is a dns server (powered by Google) not http proxy. You must either use your carrier's proxy settings or leave it blank

I have a rooted Evo 3D running ICS 4.0.3 with Sense. Blah blah blah.
Anyway, I depend on Wifi a lot cause I dont use data. Its absolutely no problem when Im at home.
But when I go to school, the Wifi is almost useless. But its weird, because I can get on the Play Store, and download apps, but that's it. How much sense does that make? OK. So you've tried different ROMs and get the same behavior. And I'm assuming Wifi works correctly everywhere else or you would have mentioned it. So, I'm leaning toward something with the school wifi. I know that my work wifi only lets students out through port 80; nothing else.
Having said that, I do find it odd that basic web surfing and Google searching doesn't work while the other stuff does. You'd think it would be the other way around.

Im seriously stumped. It doesnt make sense to me. Im able to download all the apps I want, and get notifications, but nothing else. So I dont think its the port, because Im obviously getting some sort of internet connection. I've done endless amounts of Google searches and cant find anyone who has had this problem. I know there a web filter, but it only blocks certain inappropriate sites.
But what puzzles me even more, is how my previous phone did everything just fine. So I dont think its the WiFi.
Im probably being a bit repetitive, but my mind is just blown. It literally makes zero sense to me.
Try this.
NVM. Since your problem is WiFi related this probably won't help.
It sounds like your school uses some kind of proxy for security purposes.

You may need to set a proxy when you make the wifi connection to your school's network. Those settings are available by checking "Show advanced options" right below "Show password" when you first connect to the access point, or by long pressing the SSID of the network while connected and selecting "Modify network". Some people have also reported solving Internet connectivity via wifi issues by clearing the proxy settings if they were somehow set by accident.
You will probably need to check with your school's network administrator to confirm that and get the proper settings. I'm not sure why the OG Droid didn't require similar settings but it might have been able to pick up the proxy automatically like Internet Explorer does on a PC.
BTW, unless you checked the option in the Play Store app settings to download via wifi only, you may be getting your apps and notifications via Sprint's cellular network without being connected to the Internet via wifi at all.

I make sure that the Mobile Network option stays off. I know for a fact its via WiFi. And I did some research to find that this should be easily fixed. But having the crappiest luck sometimes, the viperROM I'm running managed to hide the RSTP/HTTP Proxy settings (Not sure how or why) making them inaccessible. Even worse, I cleared all my backups on my SD card to get those 2 gigs of storage back, so I cant restore to my stock ICS ROM from the OTA update while mainting root and S-OFF. At least not that I know of.
Sorry if I seem like kind of a noob, I got this phone used like 2 weeks ago. I still have a little to learn about it.

To be 100% sure that only wifi is active you can put the phone in airplane mode, then turn wifi on after that takes effect. I know that works because I do it all the time myself. I'm pretty sure the RTSP/HTTP proxy settings only affect the data connections through the Sprint network and not wifi.
You can flash the RUU.exe to return to stock without losing S-OFF, then flash a custom hboot and recovery and root the stock ROM. I outlined this process for someone else that was S-OFF in this post, which is part of my guide for rooting and getting S-OFF.
Edit: According to this thread, RTSP/HTTP proxy settings can affect ALL traffic. I'm still not 100% sure that they apply to wifi.

Anyone else having WiFi issues?
I can connect to networks but I don't actually have internet access(I have tried on multiple networks, both secured and unsecured).
Any ideas?

I have had the same issue and it resolved after rebooting. But it came back once I let the phone idle for sometime. I have to restart the wifi for it to start working again!! I don't know much about this.. but its similar to the smartsync problem with One X.. except that the wifi disconnects every time the phone idles for a few minutes! Anyone else had this problem?

Try turning WiFi security off....

I had the same problem. Fixed it by turning off wifi, unchecking the "Use DLNA if DHCP is not available" setting, then turning wifi back on.
Faulty device
I tried all of those combinations but neither worked. Took the cell to a VZW store and they replaced it. Everything is good with this one, so the old was just faulty. Are you guys using any screen protectors or cases?

When this happens, go to advanced Wifi settings and check your IP. Most likely you have a 169. address and no useful default gateway. This generally happens when DLNA IP option is enabled and your DHCP server isn't fast enough for the [bad] rom settings provided by HTC. If that's the case, the just disable that option and cycle Wifi.
im having a problem as well just got my dna yesterday and it seems when its asleep for a bit i awake it and then disconnects flashes to 4g connected back to my network but i have no activity at that moment then i have turn wifi off and on to get it back
i know its not my network no other problems with over 5 other devices and never had a problem with any phone for years
My girlfriend has this issue with her DNA. They replaced it with a brand new one, same issue. We have a wireless router that has 3 laptops, another phone, two tablets plus my friends phones and tablets when they come over, no issues for anyone. But the two DNA's we have tried, do.
Connects, and then it says it is connected but stops working after a short time. Shows that it is connected but anything that requires internet sits there spinning. Disable Wifi and it kicks over to 4G and emails and stuff starts flooding in. Go into Wifi settings and turn it back on, and it seems like it keeps turning itself on and off, like it is stuck in a loop.
Both DNA's, same exact issue. BOth stock, non-root, both have had hard resets, nothing seems to fix it. Some searching on Google says that the issue, while not common, it's all that un-common either. Seems to be an issue with the phone itself.

That's my fear, that in order to "fix" the DNA, I have to void the warranty. If it were my phone I would be fine with that, but she is hesitant to...

it really isn't a big deal. If you have to return it for any reason bricking it or reverting it to stock isn't a problem and in all the years I've been working with Android, out of tens of thousands of users that I've had exposure to, I've never once have i heard of a carrier denying warranty work because of a phone being modified. they're generally just not smart enough to even know how to check if they even care to check. The only thing that I've heard about is people walking into store and telling them that the phone has been modified. In that case they will use it against you. Anyway you're better off with a third party ROM and a better kernel for this phone.
Used FXR from the market and fixed my wifi issues.

Went back to vzw, they said that HTC knows of the problem, it is software related but no eta on the fix. Not wishing for another thunderbolt debacle, she exchanged it for a RAZR HD.

I tried it exactly how you said to, disabled the DLNA option, turned off then on my Wi-Fi, and boom, started working again. I thought my phone could have been faulty, but I bet anyone who tries this will see their issue fixed.

I'm having the same problem but the DLNA option was already turned off by default. Wifi works right after a restart and then stops working a short time later. Once it stops working, I get a blank screen when I try to view the available wireless networks, even though this screen was populated with multiple networks previously. Frequently, I get a "Process com.android.settings isn't responding" message. I had these exact issues with my first DNA and Verizon sent me a replacement. Same issues with the replacement. Anyone else experiencing this?
Hi everyone - I have a weird problem that I really need some help on!
I have a Samsung Galaxy S III on the Verizon network. I've had the phone since it first came out and love it, but the problem I have is that when I connect to my network at home, YouTube and Google+ won't update.
Google+ tries to refresh and give the error:
"Can't load data. Check your connection."
When YouTube opens, I get the error:
There was a problem connecting to the network"
If I go into the sync settings for Google, most everything is syncing just fine, but Google+ and People details have problems. Google+ just shows the 2 arrows in the circle next to it and People details shows the same, but with an exclamation point. And then I have a message at the bottom that says "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly."
This problem for YouTube and Google+ happens MOST of the time, but sometimes it will work OK. And if I have problems and turn off the WiFi and change to 4G, everything will update just fine. I also don't have the problem on other wireless networks.
So most of you are probably already thinking, "well this is a problem with your wireless network." That's what I would think.... however, my wife has the same phone and hers works fine on our wireless network. The only difference is that my phone is rooted and hers is not. I am only rooted though; I am still running the stock ROM on the same version and NOT a custom ROM.
I have changed out my wireless router from a NETGEAR N600 to a NETGEAR N150 (yes, a downgrade) and that did not make a difference. There is nothing special configured on the router. I have Time Warner providing my Internet access.
I have done a factory reset on my phone (wiped data, cache partition, and Dalvik cache from ClockworkMod)... still nothing. Be aware that I do run a lot of apps though (around 165 of them).
Here's my problem - I don't use a ton of data, so going to 4G should just be a minor annoyance. However, I now have 2 Chromecasts in the house (awesome!) and I need to be on the wireless to cast a YouTube video over to it... 4G won't cut it.
Hopefully I provided enough info. I've attached a few screenshots as well. Usually I'm pretty good at figuring these kind of things out, but I'm at my wits end on this one and I know there's some really smart people on XDA so I'm hoping you guys might be able to provide some help.
Thanks!!

Just to add to this (and to hopefully give this a little bump), I forgot that the same problem also exists with Google Voice... when I'm at home, I usually can't listen to my voicemails through the widget unless I get off the wireless and go to 4G.
Any thoughts anyone?

Do other internet activities work fine on ur phone? Such as web surfing, watching youtube vids etc?
And another thing is that rooting and unlocking tends to break some software related stuffs in stock roms, and the sync issue might be related as well. I suggest that u try a custom rom and see if the problem persists. Hope that helps

Why are you rooted? Are you using an ad-blocker? If yes, disable it, reboot, and try again. I've seen some of Google servers end up on adblocking lists.

Polobunny, that's something I didn't think of, but no I don't use an ad-blocker. I'm rooted for the backup abilities in Titanium Backup, the awesomeness of Greenify, and the ability to do small things (like rename sound files for the phone starting up or the camera shutter sounds). I like that idea though - I will try using Voodoo OTA RootKeeper to temporarily disable root when I get home. From another perspective though, that would be weird if it fixes the problem since it's only when I'm at my house... other WiFi connections work just fine. I will let you know what I find out.

I wasn't suggesting unrooting, merely disabling your ad-blocker, if you used one.

Well, it made me think... why not? That's one of the only differences between my phone and my wife's (the other is that I have a ton of apps on mine). I've only used Voodoo OTA RootKeeper one time, but it looks like it will do a temporary unroot, so I'll give it a shot.
As far as the ad-blockers, while I don't have one specifically installed, is it possible that one of my other apps might be causing a similar problem?

I'm thinking this might be a DNS issue. You've done a lot of work already on your phone and changed your router, but I don't think you mentioned reseting your modem. That would be my next step, whether or not m.youtube.com works on your device.

That got me thinking a little bit as well... I returned the cable modem I had to Time Warner in January (2013) and replaced it with a Motorola SURFboard SB6141 that I bought. I just logged in and checked the stats on it and everything looks in the normal range. I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty confident that I've been having the problem since before the modem was swapped out.
When you say "reset the modem," are you talking about rebooting it or are you talking about resetting the configuration on it? I'm fine with either, just asking. The number show that it's been up for 31 days. The thing that keeps prodding me though is that their are no problems from at home on my wife's phone.
DNS is an interesting thought that might make the most sense... but more so a problem with it on my phone than anywhere else. Right now, my NETGEAR wireless router is dishing out the DHCP info and gives out Time Warner's DNS server addresses. I had Google's in there for a while, but changed them at one point thinking this might be related.
Is it possible that I have a bad HOSTS file entry or something when I connect to the WiFi at home? Does anyone know if the YouTube, Google+, and Google apps connect to different names or IP addresses than the mobile sites? If so, maybe I can try pinging those names or IPs that the apps go to for testing (assuming the mobile sites work fine).
Thanks!

Simply reboot it, not reset the configuration my bad.
You can use Google DNS servers on your router. This would absolutely rule out that your TimeWarner DNS servers are messing up with your stuff.
I wouldn't think it would be HOSTS file issue, unless you changed something to it yourself. Even more so if it works on mobile data.
As for YT, G+ and Gapps, they use a mesh of different servers so it's a bit hard to direct you more clearly. They all use the range 184.150.x.x as far as I'm aware though.
So all in all, try rebooting your modem. Might as well unplug the router when you do so. If it works after, then yay. If not, try using Google DNS.

Hi geoworld - yes, the bootloader is unlocked.
As a side note, I got home today and of course wasn't having the problem. Regardless, I rebooted the modem (and router) as polobunny suggested. I also changed the DNS servers to be Google's DNS instead of the ISP's. Now I'm just waiting for the problem to happen again.

I don't know yet - like I mentioned in the original post, it's an intermittent issue that happens MOST of the time, but sometimes it does work. Unfortunately, it worked fine when I got home yesterday before I even made any changes so it's hard to tell if any difference was made. If it's not going to work again, I will know pretty quickly (next day or two) since that's how often it was happening. I'll keep the thread open for a few more days and update the post as I'm testing every day.

So things were going OK, but now I had something a little unusual... the problem happened again with Google+: "Can't load data. Check your connection"
I then went to the YouTube app and it took a loooooong time but eventually loaded. I then went back to Google+ and it loaded OK.
I'm confused.
