It seems, at least on my end, that all the 4.2.2 ROMs that I've flashed recently have a bit of lag when it comes to web browsing. Pages don't load and render as quickly as 4.2.1. I've tried several browsers but each with the same outcome. Custom kernels seem to help speed things along a bit but I wanted to hear what other users have noticed in that department, since upgrading to 4.2.2.
Anyone else notice any change in web browsing (positive or negative) ?
Hmmm, what browser do you use?
Personally, I've not had any browser issues specifically since 4.2.2, in general I don't think browser performance has changed much. I use the beta version of Chrome.
Web browsing still choppy on any non aosp browser. Battery life about 1/3 lower.
I primarily use Boat so it was a noticeable difference when jumping to a 4.2.2 ROM. But I've tried AOSP, Dolphin, and Chrome as well.
AOSP browser performs way worse. Not crash/hang/lag, but pages don't load most of the time. Have to press stop button and re-visit the URL for it to load properly. Sometimes, if I wait long enough (in the minutes) it changes pages.
I'm really not so concerned about inadvertently starting another which browser is "best" thread. I was just curious if anyone noticed a bit of lag in web browsing under the same conditions as 4.2.1, regardless of browser, after upgrading to 4.2.2. It may just be something on my end and, if so, no worries.
Thanks for the input guys! :good:

Just for clarification, in case your first line was directed to me: I don't use any browser aside from AOSP browser, and it sucks so much on 4.2.2 compared to running it on 4.2.1.

I wasn't directing anything against you, I appreciate all the feedback and your response was perfectly in line with my query.
I switch ROMs and use custom kernels so often, my observation may simply be a coincidence. That's why I was looking for feedback on the subject. I'm not a nitpicky user when it comes to my tablet, but I do like it to have the best performance possible and 4.2.2 seems to have some benefits overall. I've actually managed to resolve my web browsing lag by flashing some performance tweak scripts (which can be found in the main Android Hacking and Software Development threads) along with a custom kernel. Its been so long since I've been on pure stock that I may have spoiled myself by always running the great ROMs and Kernels our devs have released.
As far as the original topic, I consider it resolved on my end. Thanks again for the feedback.

I have done this, and have had amazing results with the AOSP browser. no crash/lag at all.

Edit: Go to post 13 for the official beta
It uses IE favourites!!
What a wonderful change. No longer the need to maintain two separate sets of bookmarks now.
yeah i was playing with it overnight. hope they sort the rotation and keyboard bugs soon,
Im currently using the latest build of iris browser, its a bit slower over gprs but faster and renders better over wifi
I just test it in my HTC Touch using Wifi and it's great. The doble click to zoom, the iPhone like scrolling, accesing real web pages not pda-prepared ones, the auto full screen... all the features are great. And the interface and the settings.
What a great product! I can't wait till arrive home to test it in my X7500.
Well done OPERA - (insert lot of clapping here)
Rubbish
It is rubbish. Like last few versions after 1184 build. They seem to belong to those porogramers who believe that they know better then the user, how he should use the software. And on top of that they did not notice that there are such devices like Athena and Dimond with VGA screen best used in landscape.
Maybe for poore Touch users (nothing personal) it is good, but not for us. I have written about it already while build 14xx was released, but they obviously do not read our comments.
To Opera builders: if I want to turn my screen to portrait, I have better tools to do it. I realy do not need Opera to do it for me.
I am back with 1184 build.
I almost never use my device landscape mode. In that mode, I feel the screen is too wide and too low. As a result, my keyboard covers a big percentage of the screen, many programs shows too few lines (for example, too few items in the Contact application, too few files in file explorer, too few items in registry editors) with too much blank space on the right side of the screen.
So I have noticed the problems that you might have encountered.
I find the beta1 to be more instant and fast in making the data connection.
I make the normal changes to minimum overview zoom (70% this time), and display in large font. For some web pages, have to use smaller fonts. Also make the change to the limit paragraph width option so that the paragraph does but occupy only a small portion of the screen at the left hand side.

What are you talking about, and why are you acting like a baby over a beta (unfinished software)? Report it to Opera instead of posting it here where no one from Opera will read it. And even if they did read it, they would have no idea what you are talking about because you never actually explain what you are talking about.
the best opera i tried too...if the screen dont rotate on portrait when exit, this wil be the best...thank you
White the speed of the browser seems faster and connection more reliable, there are some still issues.
I've decided to use the default MinimumOverview Zoom setting of 30% because only with this could I see web pages without having to scroll at the overview level. The only problem is that at that level, all the links are non-active (meaning I can't click the link to go to the related web pages).
Another problem that I find is that at the overview level, the paragrah texts occupy only the small space on the left, leveing most side of the screen blank. This problem could be solved if I blank out the "limit paragraph width" option in that at the overview level the paragraph width stretch and occupies the entire screen width. However, that result in having to scroll left and right at the zoomed-in level since the browser does not "reflow" the paragraph to fit within the screen width.
The beta seems to cause my keyborad to revert back to the standard keyboard quite often too.
Does anyone else experience the same issues as what I have just described?
Anyway, I'm already testing a newer beta (build 1718) posted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=401643
I have not received an email from opera mentioning this build, but have tried out the newer build anyway.
In a few hous time, the real public beta will be released. I'll re-test these and provide feedback to Opera based on that version. No point doing it on these two peak version as every few hours they have a new release.

1718 is already the official release? Are you sure? You seems to have insider information then? Or.. are you from Opera organization itself?
Anyway, I noticed that 1718 does fix an issue I noticed in the first peak beta. In the peak beta, if I type in "Opera:" into the address, I expect to see everything that starts with that including "Opera:config" to be displayed immediately. It does not happen, but 1718 fixes that.
edit: you're right. This appears to be the official beta release. The link to opera's download site is here:

This is exactly what I was looking for. Nice one opera !
I liked Opera but 2 things really irked me and made me stop using it.
1) It didn't use IE favorites
2) It would automatically open the soft keyboard whenever I went over a text box.
I hear they've fixed the first one, does anyone know if they fixed the second one?
Thanks.

Just read, if you can. And read some other posts of others as well as my posts concerning earlier versions of Opera. In particular read the post next after yours, if my is not clear to you.
If this does not help: If I want to turn my screen to portrait I would use some other tools. I do not want Opera to turn my screen to portrait each time I close Opera. Is it clear enough?
They introduced this feature in last few versions. The build up to 1184 was not doing this and I am sure all the others would like to keep it that way.
By the way. We have a habit here. If any app is shown here, we try to test it and give a comment, what we like and what we do not like. We are testing Opera for months already, if you did not noticed, and we comment each new build. We hoped that this could help Opera builders. Since 14xx build was released, this strange behavior was commented by various people here and now you are coming and saying that it is a baby comment. Nice comment of you, an insider.

He is right after build 1184 the rotation occurs not only when you exit opera just doing anything else like txt msg it happens, and it's annoying! Tho i like this build i didnt downgrade like evreyone else thn the opera forums its been brought up as well as the sip kybd issue and the big notification shutoff bugs.Hopefully the next build/beta works better keep your fingers crossed.
Looks interesting, but the rotation to portrait drove me absolutely batty in under 2 minutes. You don't have have to close it, just minimize. What a freakin pain. No go, back to 8.65.

Is this supposed to be some kind of joke? What makes you think it's a feature? Ever heard about "bugs in beta versions"? You know, when the software doesn't do what it's intended to do?
Did you even consider that maybe, just maybe, it's just a bug?

What makes you think that anyone from Opera even reads this forum? They have their own forums for this kind of stuff.
Also, pointless whining like yours isn't going to help anyone.

I do not care if Opera comes here and reads our posts or not. It is their problem. We here are helping developers by testing their products mostly in beta versions. I am not going to verify Opera builders intentions. I just found Opera beta or pre-beta version, and as always we do here, stareted to test and give report. My report about 14xx versions was that it suddenly started to turn the screen to prtrait. Me and others were reported that several times. In next versions, this bug (obviously a bug) was still there, so when they officialy released their beta, I gave report that it is still there (the bug). I, again do not care if they are goping to listen to that or not. This is thair problem, as I have said. Contrary, I do care if somebody comes here and offends me, only because I do what we are suposed to do here. This is a forum for developers and their testers, here. If software is shown here, we will test and give report. Sometimes in big words if the bug is repeated in several versions. If you do not like it then go to hel from this forum, and stop offend people here.
Got it?
can someone pls, help which ROM (obvious that all are great and better than orig and not better than the other) to chose for using the device for its standard function.
so, i expect flawless operation along the menu-s and fuctions, priorities:
-phone and phonebook
-emails, sms messaging and web access
-bluetooth to headset
-gps if possible
-the weather function
-somewhat working camera for still pics.
not intersted in fancy backgrounds speed of the display, milisecs of the gps and the device for games and gadgets utube etc.
would appreciate a list or mention one or the other cooked roms for the above.
cheers,
entag

I don't think I quite understand your question. You're not concerned with speed, or anything like that - so why not stick with the stock ROM?
Every ROM that is not stock will (or from what I've noticed) have a couple bugs. If it's not a bug, then it's some slight annoyance that may or may not be the deciding factor as to whether or not you flash that specific ROM. They are works in progress. The stock ROM, albeit is mind numbingly slow, is free from bugs.
Disable TF3D and bam, there ya go! Instant speed.

So I've been searching the development thread for the best ICS build for an extended trip that's going to require longer battery life. My daily driver is CM10 from epinter, and while it's a great ROM, it has some battery life issues, especially how I use it (heavy streaming music coupled with Nav use). So for the past week, I've been playing with various ROMs from from other developers, and the stuff coming from Th3Bill seems to be head and shoulders above the rest, with one caveat. I can't get Google Search to work on ANY of his ROMs that I've tried. More specifically, whenever I launch Google Search (to access Now and the info cards), it immediately shuts down, on both Liquid Smooth as well as the MIUI port that he hosts. While it's not a deal breaker, Search does work on epinter's ROM, and it's one of those features that I've really grown to utilize a lot. I've done the requisite searching, but I'm not finding anything that points to a way to resolve this issue (which probably means that I'm searching incorrectly). Is this a standard issue with Google Search? Does anyone have any recommendations about how to resolve the issue? Thanks for your help.

What works on the Th3Bill's CM10 based Photon Roms is to go into your System Settings/Language & Input. Go to the bottom and click on Voice Search and uncheck "Hotword Detection". That should fix you up.
In the unlikely case that doesn't work, you'll need an older version of the Search .apk.

First of all greetings XDA community. I am new here but ever since I got my android and found this website I've been checking and searching for needed information, up until now I never had the need to register or post. So thanks for the help and information I've already found in other threads and other topics
The reason I needed to make an actual post here, is because I don't exactly have a precise question. I understand this may be a subject of discussion, so I wanted to hear the opinion of people with more experience and knowledge.
I have a Samsung Galaxy W, for probably less than a year. I understood that at the time of purchase the phone itself was already "outdated".
However this didn't concern me, I wanted a phone just so I could access the Internet anytime needed just to read some stuff or google something I may need as well as checking fb and twitter. For larger and more resource-consuming apps I would use my tablet (a Sony S).
In a nutshell: I want my android for browsing the Internet and checking fb and twitter. I would use it as an mp3 and to play some casual games to burn some time (angry birds, solitare, bejwelled, Jetpack Joyride and so forth).
By the way, I would like to (at the risk of getting sidetracked) ask you for some recommendations on browsers for android. I know Chrome is probably by far the best, but sadly the Galaxy W can't run Chrome. I've tried Dolphin, Opera, Ninesky... but nothing that would fully satisfy me (like Chrome).
The issue: As of late my phone as been slowing down and dragging itself a bit too much. Something as simple as opening the messages, something you'd expect to be instantaneous, takes some painful seconds under a black screen.
I couldn't deal with the keyboard (this is my first touchscreen phone) so I tested and bought SwiftKey which made typing a lot easier, but sometimes it also takes a while to see the keyboard appear.
Some of my apps (might be relevant): Juice Defender, 3G Watchdog, Facebook, Twitter, TweetDeck, tomtom Places, and some apps that are forced by the carrier.
I use Clean Master and I even try to, sometimes, kill iddle tasks of things I don't need, but it feels pointless since the phone just drags and slows even more as he restarts the closed apps again.
I think that using a different ROM might help my issue, and I have some questions:
1- Do you think using a Jelly Bean (or ICS) Cyanogen mod might improve the speed on my phone (pardon if I'm saying some barbarity in here)
2- If I install a Jelly Bean or ICS ROM will I be able to downolad and install Chrome from the store?
3- The phone is unlocked (meaning I can use other SIM cards from any carriers in it). Will the ROM undo this and force the phone back to it's original carrier?
4- The phone is rooted. This is kinda silly but I'd like to be sure. Will a new ROM un-root my phone?
I think that's it. Sorry for the long post. I wanted to make sure I wrote all the relevant information to make sure I get the right answer :fingers-crossed:
Thank you, looking forward to read your replies :highfive:
I forgot to mention, for some time i used the ex go launcher. It worked the same as the default theme. It takes sometime to load at first but after loading the transitions are smooth and everything works fine... until i open an app or do something big.
Lately (read, today) the call button was a bit laggy and i did not like it one bit.
Sent from my Sony Tablet S using xda app-developers app

Depending on your device Chrome works flawless (On Nexus 4 is impressive, whereas on S3 was a bit slugglish, so pretty much device dependant). You can also try to search in here for AOSP Browser which is the default browser for AOSP ROM's and behaves pretty well too ^^

Dolphin works great, even though i don't like the fact it used to reset my openened tabs after reboot (I usually stack over 20 tab to read later or similar, and that nerfed a bit my experience even it works great, definitely worth a try!). Maxthon used to be a nice browser back in my Sensation times, it's been a while since I used it but some dev's even include them on their builds, so worth a try as well.
As nearly everything in android world you should just try it, usually worth the experience because it hardly depends on device and use (for example, my "special" use and Dolphin browser).
Best regards,
