[Q] Upcoming official 4.2.1 update - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Official JB update for SGII wil be 03.03.2013, and I wanted to ask a question.I have a rooted phone with Siyah v5.0.1 kernel, with orginal ROM. Can I update my phone to official 4.1.2 with a rooted phone with Siyah kernel ? Or I must unroot my phone and get my stock kernel.
I now it may sound like a noob question but I'm new here so better I ask someone.
Thanks.

the easiest way is to simply flash the Rom with odin,
worst case scenario is that you have to wipe data/Factory reset after flashing,
so make a nandroid and a backup with titanium backup or something similar.
just so you have a cliff to lean back on.
unless you flash with mobile odin you will lose root though,
but then youll only have to flash a new rooted kernel and you should be good to go!

Thanks for the guide, So only to be sure.
I donwload the official ROM, then I flash it with odin and then if I want to root my phone again I must flash a rooted rom.
And the official update contains the stock kernel ? Because I got alredy a backup done with CWM and when I flash the official ROM and it will replace Syiah kernel with CWM and if somenting goes wrong then I can't restore it .

You can thank me if i helped you

Well, I erased the wrong nandroid and wiped out my stock ROM. So I can't revert to stock and unroot ready for the official ota without using Odin (which I have NO intentions of doing lol) but then, I'm currently running 4.2.2 anyway...so I'm not sure I would....even if I could.....
And tbh.....I like not having all that bloatware......

I would not unroot the phone. Just use Odin for flashing the new firmware and after that you can root it again. For me it's much saver than using buggy Kies...

I've got a nandroid backup from my stock ROM in PC and on USB so if somenting goes wrong I just copy it to phone.
But my question is when I flash the official rom 4.1.2 it will unroot my phone and CWM recovery mode will be deleted because of new kernel, and if there somenting goes wrong how should I backup it when there will be no CWM recovery mode .

Or just use a temporary CWM - flash it from stock recovery, do a backup, reboot.

I upgraded to ICS and now I want to downgrade

prior to updating I made a backup... but now when I go into recovery mode it no longer has the CWM-recovery options...
ICS doesn't suit me because it has no Hebrew.. is there anyway to return to GB?

Yes, if you had searched you would have found one of the last 20+ threads about this
1) Download old gingerbread bootloaders and a rom from this thread
2) follow instructions on flashing rom/bootloaders from that thread
3) you are back on gingerbread, congratulations.

I did search but couldn't find anything. Anyway I'm back to normal.. all I had to do was reflash the Siyah kernel which comes with CWM recovery tools...
anyone know if there's any type of ICS out there with Hebrew support? The stock doesn't have it.. maybe CM9?

I think cm9 does, based on what I think is Hebrew.
But I don't know if it's properly rtl or not...
just out of curious, so u were on ics, flashed ur nandroid backup and flashed siyah?
What's a nandroid?
If you use the search feature on the Xda app it doesn't return very good results for some reason,I've noticed this before. Performing the search on the website whilst on a pc would be better! Lol

i guess he firstly flashed siyah to get the CWM app. i do not know if siyah works on ICS.
he might have flashed the appropriate CF-ROOT kernel from Chainfire's thread.

If you have flashed the ICS bootloaders you need to flash the GB bootloaders back (Or it wont boot or be unstable), nandroid doesn't touch the bootloaders.

I think you are misunderstanding some things.. You must first root your phone with cf-root AND THEN, you must flash the Rom with the specified kernel. But you can take a shortcut by flashing siyah kernel. You don't need to rely on baseband version.

2> get into the recovery mode and flash cm 10.1.
3> wipe and clear the cache
4> install g apps..
5> install siyah kernel via recovery (the zip.)

No. Did you read the first post on the CM10.1 Thread?
You have to be running an ics stock rom and then root it.
Afterwards you can then proceed to flash CM10.1.

Hey ma8 first use the siyah kernel v4.1.5 or v5.0.1(tar file for ODIN) form PC ODIN to root ur phone, to get a wrk'ng latest CWM recovery on ur phone
then follow the install instruction given in the CM10.1 thread to install the same, the CM10.1 rom comes with its own kernel that will replace siyah after install

so you mean to say that flashing the siyah kernal will directly give me root? Or will i have to use super one click app after flashing the kernel to gain root? One more thing have you tried the method you gave?
Yes it will, no need for any super one click. Once uve flashed siyah, reboot in recovery (which will now be cwm recovery), make a nandroid before you flash anything. Would be a good idea to back up your apps using titanium backup, your sms msgs with an app like sms backup and restore etc. Then proceed to flash the rom, gapps, make wipes etc.

TBH we all have to find out the info at some point and this is my time to find out.
True, but you have to know the basics before flashing or else youll be the one with the non working phone.
Eg.If you had read a little bit about nand backups, you could have your phone back to how it was in 5 mins, before you messed with other roms.
So once you have your rooted phone to your liking you make a backup. Then if you try another rom and dont like it, boot into cwm and restore your backup in 5 mins.

It could be that the zip download is corrupted. Try re-downloading and flash again.
If not, flash Siyah v4 kernel via recovery or odin then try flashing desired rom again.

If you cant flash rom after you have Siyah kernel installed then as mentioned above you will need to try and restock via ODIN.

kernel is not equal rooting or recovery.
read the guides & howtos to know what is the difference. anything explained there.
a good start is cf-auto-root to root your phone, after that continue reading.

it is correct that it can come to problems when upgrading from 4.1.2 to 4.3 because Samsung introduced some changes that also effect EFS (e.g search for EFS v2). There are a few threads already that mention how to upgrade the best way, hence I would propose you to search them as I did not upgrade to a Samsung based 4.3 rom due to the fact that I am using SlimBean (AOSP based). Therefore I do not want to recommend you things that might be wrong.
For example http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565599 same question

I am not able to root my i9300 on stock ROM 4.3

Hello,
I bought my SGS3 more than a year ago. It came with 4.0.4 (ICS), I inmediately changed the ROM to have a pure Samsung one (I live in Mexico, so I wanted to get rid of the TELCEL ROM). After some months I changed the ROM to Jelly 4.1.2 and I kept the phone with it.
I always have rooted my phone without any issues, in order to be able to make backups with "titanium backup" app, so everytime I change the ROM....I do first a backup and then I flashed, so I have to be able to root the phone in the next ROM.
I read about the 4.3 release in October 2012, but after a week I read that too many issues were going on.....so I decided to wait.
So finally, I saw XXUGMK6 from "samsung-updates.com" page and I downloaded it.
I researched a little bit about the official ROM and the version XXUGMK7 was released then, so I decided to change it with this version.
Once I flashed the phone with this ROM everything looked fine, so I proceed to "root" it using ChainFire procedure (CF-Auto-root), but I have not been able to do it!!
I already read a lot of threads looking for solutions, I followed the indications..........but it is not rooted.
I got the right Odin Version, the right ZIP for rooting (CF-Auto-Root-m0-m0xx-gti9300.zip)........followed the OP by ChainFire.....but it does not work.
So.....I humbly ask for help, I really do not want to go back on 4.1.2 because not been succesfull in rooting.
Regards,
Guile

I already have the "recovery" in place, but where can I get "supersu.zip" file. I've just seen the one in googleplay, not sure if it is in ChainFire page?
