[Q] help with rooting - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys i need some advice regarding rooting my phone and installing custom recovery. my phone is running on stock 4.1.2 XXEMG4. I want to install a custom 4.3 sammy rom. So can i just flash siyah kernel to root the phone and get a custom recovery?? And can i flash a custom 4.3 rom from siyah Recovery???

You can do that.
But I offer you to flash cf-auto-root and rott your device then flash your rom from cwm.
Notic: cwm will be install with cf-root

kernel is not equal rooting or recovery.
read the guides & howtos to know what is the difference. anything explained there.
a good start is cf-auto-root to root your phone, after that continue reading.

CWM will only be installed if CF-Root 6.4 is used, not with CF-Auto-Root (which is more secure regardign SDS)

I have read somewhere that by flashing a 4.3 rom can cause efs issues. So is it better if i flash a sammy 4.3 rom with odin? And then I can flash a rooting kerenel and a recovery right??

it is correct that it can come to problems when upgrading from 4.1.2 to 4.3 because Samsung introduced some changes that also effect EFS (e.g search for EFS v2). There are a few threads already that mention how to upgrade the best way, hence I would propose you to search them as I did not upgrade to a Samsung based 4.3 rom due to the fact that I am using SlimBean (AOSP based). Therefore I do not want to recommend you things that might be wrong.

For example http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565599 same question

Steps are the following, not necessarily in this order
decide which JB rom you want such as
- more vanilla feeling: cyanogenmod, rootbox, etc
- closer to samsung stock: Neatrom, leaked JB rom
- download rom
- backup important stuff
- download latest odin
- flash via odin (from pc with device in download mode)
optionally, you can read some more on kernels and decide for a specific kernel.

In order to avoid brick bug, you just have to avoid ICS 4.0.4
Thank you

You flash zips via CWM.
Reboot device into recovery, wipe data/factory reset and then flash your rom zip.
The only reason I can see why you have created this topic/asked these questions is because you havent taken time to read any guides or any other topics/searched etc.
All the info you need is readily available no need to be spoon fed here.

Any rom to flash via Odin

yeah i know but i want to know if i can install custom roms via odin because i cant download any stock rom because hotfile is sooooo slow and even after 3 days it doesnt download the rom....
sooo any ideas?
Look for a torrent link then
What's wrong with using cwm? You'd probably need one once you root.

You would need to read the custom roms description and find if any are Odin flashable tar format .

[Q] Upcoming official 4.2.1 update

Official JB update for SGII wil be 03.03.2013, and I wanted to ask a question.I have a rooted phone with Siyah v5.0.1 kernel, with orginal ROM. Can I update my phone to official 4.1.2 with a rooted phone with Siyah kernel ? Or I must unroot my phone and get my stock kernel.
I now it may sound like a noob question but I'm new here so better I ask someone.
Thanks.
the easiest way is to simply flash the Rom with odin,
worst case scenario is that you have to wipe data/Factory reset after flashing,
so make a nandroid and a backup with titanium backup or something similar.
just so you have a cliff to lean back on.
unless you flash with mobile odin you will lose root though,
but then youll only have to flash a new rooted kernel and you should be good to go!

Thanks for the guide, So only to be sure.
I donwload the official ROM, then I flash it with odin and then if I want to root my phone again I must flash a rooted rom.
And the official update contains the stock kernel ? Because I got alredy a backup done with CWM and when I flash the official ROM and it will replace Syiah kernel with CWM and if somenting goes wrong then I can't restore it .

Well, I erased the wrong nandroid and wiped out my stock ROM. So I can't revert to stock and unroot ready for the official ota without using Odin (which I have NO intentions of doing lol) but then, I'm currently running 4.2.2 anyway...so I'm not sure I would....even if I could.....

I would not unroot the phone. Just use Odin for flashing the new firmware and after that you can root it again. For me it's much saver than using buggy Kies...

I've got a nandroid backup from my stock ROM in PC and on USB so if somenting goes wrong I just copy it to phone.
But my question is when I flash the official rom 4.1.2 it will unroot my phone and CWM recovery mode will be deleted because of new kernel, and if there somenting goes wrong how should I backup it when there will be no CWM recovery mode .

Or just use a temporary CWM - flash it from stock recovery, do a backup, reboot.

S3 Custom Rom

I have S3 GT-I9300.
It's probably the 10th time I am asking for help on XDA. I have been trying to install CyanogenMod and other custom ROMs from 6 months with no luck. The problem is whenever I install 1 of the custom ROM I lose my network. I have also tried flashing the modem of JustArchi with no luck. I am dying to taste a custom ROM. It would be greatly appreciated if anybody would help.
Thanks in anticipation.

Have you formated modem/efs ? I personally never done that allso make sure you're on the latest [insert recovery of choice here] version? Allso how can you have imei and network on samsung based rom and not have them on CM? Check on samsung rom if imei is the same as the one behind the battery or on the box you've bought your phone.

Also next time write in Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting or General, this isn't development related, you're just experiencing android zero issues.

I dont know how I have formatted the modem/efs. I just wipe data cache before installing the rom. I am using philz_touch_6.48.4-i9300. The IMEI on the rom is same as that on the back of the phone.
Sorry I didn't notice that I posted in the wrong place. How am I supposed to move it to the right place.
This has been answered multiple times, there is a thread about that, it's all about patched kernel/modem, also, you're posting this in wrong forum, there is Q&A for that!
Use boeffla and patched modem, but first return to stock, i guarantee it will work.
Steps:
Flash stock: Stock 4.3
Flash Boeffla (sammy version): Boeffla 5.3
Flash patched modem. Modem
-> Till here you got to have your network back.
Then flash your desired AOSP ROM, and then flash a patched kernel like Boeffla (for AOSP, but watch out, there are CM and Omni based roms, so is Boeffla kernel, if you use CM, download for CM), because only patched kernel can read a patched modem. When you do that you don't have to flash patched modem again because CM/AOSP based ROMs do not wipe modem.
And remember BACKUP EFS
And if IMEI is ok you don't have to restore EFS, you only restore it when your imei is 0000... or 0049..., for Emergency calls only and Baseband unknown follow my steps.
Just follow these steps and you're good to go.
Someone should make this sticky.

Well, no, you can flash any stock rom, as long it is 4.3 based, you can see that under this thread you have many more stock, deodexed cwm falshable roms based on 4.3 by JustArchi, i linked you that because it is easier to flash in CWM then via Odin, but again, your choice.
As off Boeffla, here you can download all versions, recmmended are latest stable:
http://www.boeffla-kernel.de/index.php/2012-10-31-06-13-16
You can see there are for Samsung 4.3/4.4, and Omnirom based or CM based all the way down. (double check if you will run omnirom or cm based rom).

Galaxy S2 (i9100) upgrade from stock 4.0.4 to CM11

Hi all, my second ish post on xda (yes im a moderate android noob), i am after some advice and help on flashing CM11 to my S2 (Intl), as it feels really outdated (because it is) and also quite slow (because it is). Ive read about the brickbug and i ran Chainfire's GotBrickbug tool and it said "unknown chip, not sure if dangerous, at least it isnt known to be bad. The chip is V3U00M and the revision is 0xE. I also ran another checker and it said sane chip. Im running the stock 4.0.4 (rooted with Framaroot and removed carrier rubbish) and apparently 4.0.4 is prone to bricking. Ive read about flashing new kernels (Siyah etc) and other methods. I know there is the 4.1.2 update, does that remove the chances of brickbug so i can then flash CM11 via CWM? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Official 4.1.2 firmware is safe, only 4.0.4 has brickbug.
So do i just upgrade to 4.1.2 then use odin to flash CWM 6.0.4.5 and then follow normal procedure? Thanks for replying btw

Or... You can root 4.1.2 with siyah kernel, but you need to flash kitkat compatible recovery
