[Q] s3 very slow and laggy and root question. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

People, I need a little help, my s3 has gotten very slow. I mean it's laggy, phone and contact app takes 2 to 3 seconds to open. overall feel of the phone is laggy. my phone is 16 gb and used almost all only 1.5 gb is free, is there a possibility that low space is the problem. it's getting really annoying, pls suggest some solution.
My second question is that if I root my s3 will I be able to backup my apps settings, game progress etc.
I would really appreciate the help.

I really recommend using a custom ROM like Android Revolution HD, it's closest to the stock experience and tweaked to perfection
I have no lag on my device with this ROM;

[Q] Does sgs2 lag ? be honest

i had a sgs but just broke it with water dmg 2 months ago was great aside from battery life and gps and of course that horrible lag
tried many mods darky , doc , miui ... etc with different lagfix , kernel ext3 . ext4 .. etc but still the device lags alot , the best was miui glitch minimum lag but still the lag is there
i used nexus one with 2.3 and even HD2 with 2.2 and compared them to my phone ... loading games i load them like 1.5~2 x faster than both but while in menu , exiting apps , switching between apps and opining apps both devices do these things much faster and they dont lag at all while mine lags in everything and the same issue with my other friend sgs while sgs2 shows that its faster than both phones
now i want to buy a new phone and thinking about the sgs2 but i dont want to fall in the same mistake and end up with a laggy phone
so what do u think of sgs2 , does it lag much ? or it doesnt lag at all? does it have any lag issue ?
i want you to tell me honestly and excuse my poor English
PS : I 'm not comparing them to how IOS is , i know how fast is iOS but i'm not looking to buy any IPHONE cus i want an android
The word 'Lag' is a relative one. If you are coming from those devices then you won't notice any, but iPhone users have some trouble getting in, iOS is silky smooth, can't say the exact same for Android.
Remember, I am not a fan of either.
Regards.
Every piece of hardware in the world will have software lag on it occassionaly, at least. My experience is that this blows all over my HD2 with every ROM I had on there, and I tried a LOT of different builds on that.
Seriously, if you've had a HD2 running Android faster than your SGS2 then there's either some bad software involved or you've got a faulty device. The difference is more than obvious.
what i meant with lag that the phone get stuck and wont accept commands
i have been android user the for more than a year now , never bought any iphone
but compairing my sgs to hd2 and nexus 1 its the laggiest no mater what u do with it
nexus 1 and hd 2 were very smooth and dont lag when installing more than one up
my sgs lags while downloading a single up and nearly freeze while installing it , cant even brows contact smoothly while installing an app unlike hd2 and nexus 1

So you're actually saying that a HD2 running Android is faster than the SGS, but not faster than the SGS2?
Edit: Sorry, I just reread your first post. I see what you're saying now. So basically, you've not got the SGS2, but you've had the SGS and wonder if it's that much better? In that case, I'm out, since I've never even played with the original SGS. All I can say is the the SGS2 is faster and smoother than anything I ever had running on my HD2, and I generally stuck to Nexus builds because I prefer the original stock Android experience.
Coming from an iPhone, I would say the S2 is on par as far as homescreen "lag" goes. As for not accepting commands, the only time I have had this happen is if I lock the phone using setCPU . Other than that, the phone is FAST. I don't notice any lag at all, and most apps launch just about instantly.

i dont have a sgs2 and thats why i'm asking about it before i buy it
and i did compare my sgs1 2.3 darky 10 ext4 wiped to my friends hd2 2.2 mine lags in menu and while installing but its faster when it come to loading games by 1.5~2x times
his never lags while doing anything just smooth
There are small micro jitters here and there with andriod OS, not a smooth as iOS.
Barely any lag in normal use in things like web surfing and using the interface.
But I get extreme lag using BBC Iplayer(Not the app) in HD or any other video source that is in HD excluding youtube. The video lags and the sound it out of sync. Pretty much unwatchable.
I know that these videos aren't optimised for use on a mobile but it would have been nice if they didn't lag.
Apart from that, all other videos are fine.
Silky smooth here, underclocked to 1000GHZ. Had a sgs and it drove me maaaaaaaad!

Why does everyone think ios is extreme fast?
Even my sgs loads apps quiker than my iphone 4.
It does maybe sometimes not as fluid but always fast.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
I agree faster loading time but unfortunatly not fluid as ios.
I own a Sgs, Sgs2, desire, desire hd, nexus s and the smoother ar the desire hd but it is heavy as a rock and not resistant as the sgs2
No lag on mine ever since updated.to XXKG6. No problem on either Ninphetamine or lulz kernel.

On mine there is no lag with the stock ROM. Once I installed Go Launcher, the swiping of the homescreen while was not laggy did have a lower framerate than the stock Touchwiz 4 launcher which was silky smooth.
Never had ANY lag at all since the SGS2 released. It really depends on the usage. But mine, no lag.
No lags on mine. Unrooted and stock rom 2.3.3.
Ah, well... actually to be honest yes, now that I think about it... sometimes I experience a very annoying lag of about 1 second at each and every character I type in the standard text box of forums, while posting. Each character appears about 1 second after having tapped it on the virtual keyboard.
Not sure if it happens with all the browsers, but it's very annoying indeed.
In addition, under the same circumstances when tapping on the text for editing, the "arrow" cursor appears shifted down of about 2-3 rows, with respect to where it actually is in the text.
Not sure if anybody has found a solution for this.
All of these newer phones, EVO 3d, sensation, sgs2 etc. will hardly ever have lag, in my case I have mine underclocked and still no lag, and never had lag.

The question really boils down to does it lag, Yes or No.
There are animation lags from time to time on the S2, thats just how andriod works. Even if you stuff in a quadcore with 3Ghz per core nothings gonna change due to how the software works, probably even if the memory speed is increased 10 folds there will be lags.
No and yes nothings perfect. Ive experienced it before root. Why are you thinking of swtching to, a diffrent OS?

[Q] Is this phone recommended?

My 20 year old cousin sister is looking for a Android phone and the ACE just about fits in an extended budget.
Is the phone good? Or are there any better alternatives at similar prices?
The internal memory at 158Mb seems too low, is this a problem?
Will she be able to run games like Angry Birds?
She needs a stable ROM and will not be messing up with the phone much. Which ROM / Kernel is recommended?

If you know how to install ROM's and the necessary additions, 158 mb is not a problem. And this phone is damn good. Easy to flash ROMs and make the phone easily modified.

Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman at almost same price in mumbai.. and worth of price as more ram + processor + 320MB storage + ICS + walkman quality.... so it would be worth that money...
if you like ace then you might want to wait for some time as ace plus is expected to be launched at 15k with some good improvements
since she wont be messing about with the phone much, maybe stock roms would be better(functions like swipe to call) try ICS stock by rushabh25 its in the development section

This was my first Android phone so I really don't have vast experience, but I have learned to install CM7.2, many mods, hacks, etc and the phone is going like a champ, so it can take heavy modding and inexperienced users.
It is true that the limited internal memory is a problem, at least to me and it lags a bit playing games, even being OC'ed and optimized by scripts.
I do still recommend it, just make sure you install a lightweight launcher and try to keep the always running apps (facebook, twitter, whatsapp, etc) to the minimum those precious MBs of ram do hurt the performance, also disabling big, heavy widgets has shown improved performance.
Do not try to overclock over 902Mhz, I keep mine at 884Mhz though at 902 it was able to run normally throughout the day, but when playing games or doing CPU intensive tasks I do get hard resets.
I hope this helps you in making your mind.

[Q] Galaxy note performance

I dont know if its me but, my Galaxy note i717 tends to lag a lot, i read up online and figured out its due to the Snapdragon S3 processor, which tends to lag a lot. Does anyone else have this issue... what do u do about it...? im thinking about returning it and getting the Galaxy S3. I installed CM9, team perfection rom, and Hybrid and it still lags...
I love the size of the note, and the S-Pen but I really cant have my phone Lagging, it ruins the user experience...
I came from the iphone 4 which was pretty smooth.. it isn't to fast but it didn't lag at all, other than that i think android is a lot better....
Mine is lag free. I'm running Juggernaut AOKP currently, but I rarely saw lag on GB, and never on ICS. Some notes just seem to be more laggy than others. If you're within 30 days, go exchange it for another one, see if its any better. If not, it may be an rogue app, widget, or launcher that is causing it.

you mean caches?
that just frees memory right? how does that actually speed the phone up though? because android automatically closes program and frees memory already doesnt it?
I'm running OnlyOne ICS ROM and have zero lag. Give this ROM a try. It is the smoothest ICS ROM I have flashed thus far.
Im running with Team Perfections objection. Zero lag.
It is my understanding that the caches aren't memory, but temporary files for applications that can cause problems. Wipe 'em first, Dalvik cache too.
Try v6 supercharger to null the lag. Rememberber in ics there is no custom kernel yet...

I am running the Hybrid or Flap's base roms depending on the day of the week it seems...zero lag.
I returned my first Note due to the backlight bleed on the buttons (white version) and was shocked at how much better the second Note was. Originally I thought I had made a mistake in purchasing it. The phone was slowish and the SPen sucked. It would hesitate at everything that it did. I even did a wipe on it to no avail. The second phone brought a smile to my face. Still does!
The S3 is a nice phone and you wouldn't lose either way.

The phone isn't the issue...it's the software.
Just look at the size of the latest ICS leak. 1.1* gigs.
Then look at CM9-- 150 megabytes.
There you have it...950 megabytes of crap. Just a few crappy lines of code can bring a phone down to it's knees.
Not to mention, i've seen the fastest phones available brought down to their knees. If you have 9 pages of widgets, don't expect your phone to be blazing. It takes a lot more to run a widget than it does a 4x5 row of static icons. That's sooooo 1995.
stock GB rom, no lag
this phone runs AMAZING with ICS, really.. better than my friends HTC one X Tegra 3 CPU. Wait until samsung drops the official ICS update. The only one ROM was AMAZING, however I got a lot of bugs that I could not live with.

Q: Multitasking on Galaxy S3

I've read a few threads here concerning multitasking problems on the Galaxy S3. From what I gather, the reason multitasking sucks and apps constantly reload when reopened is due to bloatware running in the background using precious memory.
I have a Nexus 7 as well and multitasking on this thing is a dream. Hardly anything is ever reloaded. I've seen a few different suggested solutions but nothing 100% solid.
My S3 is stock (unrooted) and running JB 4.1.1. For some reason, my phone won't find the 4.1.2 update but that's another story in itself.
I'm just asking for people who have experienced this problem, apps constantly redrawing, what you all have done to fix this. What roms you've flashed, mods you've flashed or made etc. Maybe this can be made into a thread to help a lot of S3 users, a guide somewhat. This is my 2nd S3, I flashed a few ICS roms on the 1st one and it never made much of a difference in terms of memory management, but I don't know if the same could be said for JellyBean.
Any tips and advice much appreciated, thanks in advance!

Most custom roms seem ok for multitasking. Just don't flash any aggressive memory management mods coz they're gonna kill your app as soon as you open another.. "stock" custom roms do the trick for me unless I'm running a heavy game or something.

I have never ever had a problem with multitasking. Is that probably only because I have the 2GB version of the Galaxy S3?

I have the sane problem and flashed omega rom 4.1.2 and same problem reloads my app
high usageof ram is da problem
2gb version doesnt have this problem . only 1gb version di this
I understand what you're saying. Like you, i've searched and tested a lot to solve multitasking on stock roms (zram, swap in the internal sd, swap on external sd, tweaks like apps in ram increase, etc.) Far from satisfying. You can get jkay mod to lock your launcher in memory, that helps with the launcher redraws but one can't just lock everything in ram. zram had weird behaviours with extended use, swap works but makes all stuff generally slower, especially if used from the external sd and also has the sd wear potential problem.
I've came to terms with the reality that multitasking is essentially broken and since every other samsung phone on this range is getting 2Gb i gave up on samsung bothering to actually make this work properly. I don't even think newer phones have that fixed either, it's just there's probably enough ram not to care.
I was just about to put it up for sale so i tried aosp roms. Dude, this is where it's at, it's not that it's perfect but multitasking probably doesn't get any better than this for this phone. Tried slimrom and, granted, you do some "sacrifices" but multitask WORKS. I mean, stuff doesn't get closed after a while because for no reason - on stock, apps on background actually apeared to have a timer, they'd get closed even if i didn't do anything with the phone after a while (there's a limit of course). Also, i didn't compromise that much. Browser is actually better than stock's - does the same but it's faster and reflows text on zoom. Camera isn't THAT bad. You do lose all the effects from the stock camera but i never used them anyway and i can always get some other camera app for that, there's plenty anyway. I've seen people complaining about bluetooth but i use mine a lot and haven't come across any problem. Some say they have worse battery or microlags - to me battery's about the same as stock and had microlags anyway with stock, even worse since apps were restarting way more often.
TL: DR - try out an aosp rom. Made me reconsider selling my phone. For now.

Anyone use Dolphin browser? How much ram does it take up?

On my device it starts out taking up about 70mb of ram but continually grows.
To check, go to settings->apps->running->show cached process.
Please help me here, I dont know if this is normal or not. It goes from 70 to 300mb of cached ram usage in a matter of hours.

IIRC, cached process is for background apps that are still in memory simply because there is enough memory to do so. If the device is short of memory, these cached processes will be cleared.
Does the memory issue cause you actual problems?

Dolphin actually works for you? Well I'll be damned. Are you rooted or just straight stock?
The poster above is correct in what he said, the only time to worry about it is if it causes a device slowdown. If you're worried about it you can always go to the recent page and clear it out.

Thx for the help . I'm rooted. No, the browser does eventually get laggy when the cache size gets really high. I've set Tasker to kill dolphin when the screen goes off to reset the cache, which seems to work.

Using dolphin on my rooted Team Baked tab and have zero issues. Infact, hasnt been rebooted in a few weeks, and dolphins never been closed. Same 9 open tabs and smooth as butter.
Dolphin and jet pack on stock tablet z.
Best browser ever. Why should I care about memory 2GB is a lot
With my 2 bad eyes I can watch only one wide at a time and usually do not stream music from another at the same time.

Same problem on all browses on many devices at the moment for many people. It comes from a problem in android latest releases which is hopefully going to be addressed. Nice to be able to say that this device is not affected because saved by relatively large ram but others not so lucky with apps slowing down and freezing, one guy on another forum. has said chrome reached the heady heights of 400MB :-o

I am using Dolphin on my XTZ (non-rooted 4.1.2 stock). After a few hours of browsing the used RAM goes to 400-500 Mb.. And Dolphin actually slows down and sometimes freezes for seconds, so I have to restart it.
Lately I started using Chrome.. seems to handle better browsing for hours.

I love you. You have convinced me this issue is not a hardware defect or something (I dont know how rogue memory leaks would be a hardware defect but w/e). You also saved me from additional anger by factory resetting my tablet only to find the issue still persisting.
Gosh, I love this tablet so much despite its flaws, I really want to keep it. My last (5) nexus 10s would randomly reboot multiple times a day from the freaking system ui having a memory leak, and it took a year for Google to fix it with 4.3.
Anyway, turning off Javascript helps immensely. Still, after a few days, the browser is taking up over 200mb of ram, but it is a far cry from the 400mb in 2 hours that usually happens.
Anyone have any idea?

, do you Know if 4.2.2 will fix this when it's released? Sorry for double post.

As far as I've read on other forums here and other sites..... No! Latest upgrade to 4.3 on galaxy nexus has, if anything, made it worse...I tried it on a Gnex and can confirm that to be the case

Well that's just dandy. Honestly thinking about getting an ipad right now . Sure, ios is a bit more boring, but it at least works. Nexus 10 was plagued by a memory leak, and it was 8 months before Google for anything. Now I can't properly browse or use bluetooth, as that affects Internet.
