[Q] Stable ROM w/o TW - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I'm not a huge fan of TouchWiz (not to mention the bloatware) so would like to see what my options are. I'm looking for something stable & plain as a nexus. Always heard good things about CM, but their only i605 version is 4.2.2 and has known BT & GPS issues? Looks like beans is my best option. Anyone have any other suggestions?
Why do some of the google apps have to be added separately. Can you not use the play store w/ custom roms?
Any benefit to using ODIN w/o unlocking? Or is unlocking required since VRALL4? Looks like there is enough documentation now to reset the custom rom counter, lock, & unroot in case something goes wrong & have to use the warranty. Thanks.

Beans rom is still TW just themed to not look like it. CM is your best bet for nexus like feel. If it makes you feel better even the nexus 4 with a stock build from google has BT problems.

Oh ya? I didn't realize that. Any reason CM went straight to 4.2.2 instead of getting a more stable 4.1.1 release out for the i605?

Regarding the bloat, most of the ROMs get rid of that (even the TW based ones) so that will be a non-issue, and if you use a custom launcher most of the TW signs are gone, with the exception of the cool ones (multi app, s-pen, smart stay). With CM-based ROMs, which I have used on other devices, you flash GAPPS separately, with Beans you choose which GAPPS you want during the install using Aroma. Once you are installed, the play store will work fine (but it won't be there on CM-based roms to start). I use bluetooth and like some of those TW features, so CM ROMs are a no go for now for me...been on Beans since January and have been very pleased with it.
You will definitely need to unlock first though using Adam Outler's method (CASUAL + ODIN) and there are easy ways back to stock if you ever have to do a warranty swap.

Go with Beans FTW! :good:

As another 4.2.2 option, I'd try CarbonROM. Fast, stable and smooth. My DD. Very few issues at this point.
Beans is awesome if you want to stay with a TW-based ROM.

+1 for carbon. Love it

Vanilla Rootbox is my favorite non-Touchwiz ROM, lots of options and god battery life for a 4.2.2 ROM.

closest to stock ROM?

What's the ROM closest to Stock Touchwiz, that's rooted with an unlocked bootloader?
I haven't accepted the OTA yet, but the window popping up every few minutes is starting to drive me a little bit nuts. I wasn't quite ready to root/rom my phone but i guess I am now. An unlocked bootloader's more important to me than my lazyness. =P
I just really like Touchwiz, and don't want to loose any Samsung functionality.
And do any Touchwiz ROMs have OTAs disabled? Or if they don't, what's the easiest way to go about that?
Both cleanROM and Beans are touchwiz based so you will retain the TW features, most notably s-pen. I have flashed both but ended up sticking with beans build 6 as it had a couple of features I wanted (call blocking and the other carrier apns added in). Both are solid...can't go wrong either way. As for the OTA notification, I can only speak to beans, as I was on that when the update came out. The notitification is definitely blocked.

I may be wrong, but I think you can stay COMPLETELY stock {rooted} as long as you don't keep the stock recovery.
Just unlock, and if you have CWM or TWRP installed, the OTA will fail everytime, and eventually stop nagging you.
That having been said, Bean's is so much better than stock, all TW works, with all of the benefits of Beans...
Yup stock rom rooted thats what I use same as from the store but rooted I like it I used to flash like every other day lately just been usen stock roted on my phones were everything works fine dont get me wrong I love the options of custom rom but theres alot of little thing here and there that might not work ya know
There is a ROM made by scrosler that is stock, has the latest OTA and is rooted. Just check under the Android Development section. He also makes the CleanROM builds.
Check Cleanrom verizon edition. Im running it and work perfect for me.

As mentioned both Beans and CleanROM are very close to stock, rock solid, and great features.
CleanROM has all the stock TouchWiz UI elements so it looks like right out of the box, Beans uses more of the the JB/ICS elements making it look like a pure android experience.
I have used both and can say they rock, I just like to change things up and am really enjoying Beans currently.
for awhile I had mine on the root injected stock worked like a champ unlocked my bootloader and installed both beans & clean rom.
Like them both, currently running Clean rom because to me it feels closer to stock tw beans had too much of a blue theme for me I like the way the phone looked out of the box as far as performance and features like the above said can't go wrong either way.
thanks guys. this is the beans rom you were talking about, right?

I've been working with Adrynalyne on a very close to stock ROM (probably closest to stock), but we've both been busy, and this OTA just threw another wrench in the works.

Correct, he just had a release today.

Best ROM that feels like stock but with some TW

I'm currently using the Google Edition ROM and I love it. I love the stock android UI but I miss the TW camera, gallery, and multitasking.
Is there a ROM with:
Stock Android UI
TW camera
Multitasking
App 2 SD
Also, new to romming, how can I get my Verizon to work without having to sign in? I'm not the account owner of the Verizon account and with stock it automatically signs me in.

I don't know if any one ROM is going to do everything you are wanting, but Eclipse is pretty close. That's what I'm running right now. It's TW based, but AOSP themed. It has the TW camera and multitasking. It's probably worth trying out.

Eclipse ROM is siiiiiiick. However, if you're OCD gets the best of you and you can't take some of the graphical imperfections then you'll find yourself restoring a backup quickly.

My OCD usually keeps me from running themed ROMs because they are generally not done very well. Eclipse is by far the best themed ROM I've ever run.

This.... by far. With a little DPI modding my perfectionist side is REALLY happy. I had gotten so used to Slim on my SGS3. This is basically AOSP with all the TW still baked in there. And its memory friendly. Only think I did to change it was installed a stock kernel (then stock modded from scott/hyper) and then the xposed framework for DPI and battery meter changes.

[Q] [SGP 5.0 US version] Upgrading to ICS or even better JB

Greetings,
So, I recently acquired a SGP 5.0 running Gingerbread. I had forgotten how klunky gingerbread is.
Anyway, I want to upgrade it to a new version of Android but I am not sure how to go about it. I have read about PAC-rom and I even ended up on the 4.3 CyanogenMod 10.2 Developers page. What Rom would you suggest and how do I go about it. I am very much green at this and the forum search seems to be down or else I'd scour the forums more before asking this question.
Thanks in advance,
TF
Another question
Should the need arise, how does one restore a device back to FacSpec? or is this a one way street? It doesn't really matter much, my player is well out of warranty so I've really got nothing to lose other then a working player.
Thanks,
TF

By installing a custom Rom, do you lose access to the Google Play store?
Thanks,
TF
1. It's your choice, it depends on your needs and the features you want.
2. You can still come back to stock if for some reasons you don't like custom roms
3. To have access to play store, you need to flash a special zip containing all the proprietary google apps. (gapps)
Cyanogenmod tends to be THE most popular rom because of it's been proven over the years. However people with the 5.0 tends to go with PAC because it implement basically 3 roms into one (Cyanogenmod, Aokp, Paranoidandroid).
My 2 cents
You lose the camera function on our device going from GB to ICS or JB. You can still get a camera preview snapshot using the fastburst app on JB. Having tried most of the ROMS available, my preference, by far, is SlimBean. If you plan on trying out several, I suggest you include SlimBean as an option.

The loss of the camera is no great loss to me. The one one my Droid4 is far better, this is simple just a replacement for my iPod.
Thanks!

Greetings,
So I used the superoneclick root hack on my device yesterday and all seemed to be well. Until today, I noticed that the device is now bleeding power. Anyone have any thoughts?

[Q] CM 10.2 Nightly

Quite new to the whole rom thing, pretty much always had my phone rooted for various reasons, but only recently started trying out roms, not a big fan of touchwiz, so i decided to try out the CM 10.2 nightlies, so far its been working just fine, then again i have only tried one and except for a few minor errors once in a while, its been working alright.
My questiion is tho, do i need to do a full wipe each time i install a new nightly release? my guess would be no, but i just wanna make 100% sure that im doing the right thing.
Second question, would anyone recommend something different? i tried out liquidsmooth before CM, overall loved it, but seems like its not supported anymore.
Thanks in advance!
1-no need to wipe
2-check in the dev area for Roms based on CM
If you're asking for different roms i definitely do not suggest aoso for the simple reason they drain much more battery and miss a lot of samsung based one features.
I hate touchwiz like you, but there are many alternatives: go launcher ex, next launcher 3d, nova or apex launcher and more. Personally i use honami launcher (xperia?) I found in a rom that got it off xda. So it should be easy to find, it's REALLY quick and responsive (and i do have MANY apps).
About roms for galaxy s3 i would divide them in 2 jelly bean (would you actually get ics?) Categories: 4.1.1<x<4.2.2 and all 4.2.2+ ones.
You can get any 4.2.2 just fine but for these there are different roms.
Omega is well known, i have also heard of wanamlite. There is chaos legacy for 4.2.2.
But the one i use is foxhound (you can find both flavours, but latest 2.7 version of 4.1.2 is pretty astonishingly unstable, which is unusual for the great goxhound. The 0.1 version of 4.2.2 is what i chose and it's perfectly stable) and believe them to be quick and drain much less battery than most.
On 4.2.2 you may NOT change kernel, i remind you, as none are supported.
For theming rember to use xposed framework and its many modules...

Favorite ROM for VZW Galaxy S4?

I'm on android 4.4.2 NC5. I've just just done a factory reset on my phone and looking to put a ROM on my phone so I can escape touchwiz and all of its bs. What are you favorite ROMs that are stable, intuitive, and allow you to use all the phone's features (wifi, gps, etc)? Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
I was using Hyperdrive, it's a pretty good ROM. My biggest complaint was that it was not keeping my login pin stored and had reboots. I switched over to Google edition and haven't looked back.
For you it must be a SS compatible ROM. AOSP ROMs are not available to you because you can't change the kernel. I have never tried it but have read a few good things about Hyperdrive.
For me it's Cyanogenmod all the way.
If you like CM, GPE, Or just the AOSP feel, Eclipse is the way to go. Great Rom, No Bloat, And you can use stuff like greenify to get an amazing battery life.
