closest to stock ROM? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

What's the ROM closest to Stock Touchwiz, that's rooted with an unlocked bootloader?
I haven't accepted the OTA yet, but the window popping up every few minutes is starting to drive me a little bit nuts. I wasn't quite ready to root/rom my phone but i guess I am now. An unlocked bootloader's more important to me than my lazyness. =P
I just really like Touchwiz, and don't want to loose any Samsung functionality.
And do any Touchwiz ROMs have OTAs disabled? Or if they don't, what's the easiest way to go about that?

Both cleanROM and Beans are touchwiz based so you will retain the TW features, most notably s-pen. I have flashed both but ended up sticking with beans build 6 as it had a couple of features I wanted (call blocking and the other carrier apns added in). Both are solid...can't go wrong either way. As for the OTA notification, I can only speak to beans, as I was on that when the update came out. The notitification is definitely blocked.

I may be wrong, but I think you can stay COMPLETELY stock {rooted} as long as you don't keep the stock recovery.
Just unlock, and if you have CWM or TWRP installed, the OTA will fail everytime, and eventually stop nagging you.
That having been said, Bean's is so much better than stock, all TW works, with all of the benefits of Beans...

Yup stock rom rooted thats what I use same as from the store but rooted I like it I used to flash like every other day lately just been usen stock roted on my phones were everything works fine dont get me wrong I love the options of custom rom but theres alot of little thing here and there that might not work ya know

There is a ROM made by scrosler that is stock, has the latest OTA and is rooted. Just check under the Android Development section. He also makes the CleanROM builds.

Check Cleanrom verizon edition. Im running it and work perfect for me.

As mentioned both Beans and CleanROM are very close to stock, rock solid, and great features.
CleanROM has all the stock TouchWiz UI elements so it looks like right out of the box, Beans uses more of the the JB/ICS elements making it look like a pure android experience.
I have used both and can say they rock, I just like to change things up and am really enjoying Beans currently.

for awhile I had mine on the root injected stock worked like a champ unlocked my bootloader and installed both beans & clean rom.
Like them both, currently running Clean rom because to me it feels closer to stock tw beans had too much of a blue theme for me I like the way the phone looked out of the box as far as performance and features like the above said can't go wrong either way.

thanks guys. this is the beans rom you were talking about, right?

I've been working with Adrynalyne on a very close to stock ROM (probably closest to stock), but we've both been busy, and this OTA just threw another wrench in the works.

ANy advantage of ATT ICS update over custom ROMS

I tried to update to ATT ICS after restoring my Note to Stock Gingerbread and although I was able to restore to stock, my baseband did not restore to original, and Keis said I was not eligible for update. I then installed ICS Team perfection rom which works great. The question I have is whether these custom ROMS are better than ATT Keiss update ICS, and whether anyone here has tried the Keis update and then flashed a custom ROM and what their opinions are.

Of course the custom roms are better man, you're talking about a dev taking a Rom and Stripping it of all the Crapware, implementing awesome features that were not already there, adding speed tweaks and customization.... it would be pretty stupid to even bother with Stock Roms.... if you're going to run a stock rom then you might as well get you one of those gay iphones LOL!!
cheers!

I just did the update about two days ago and I was running Hotwire's 10.1 Kang Rom, and honestly the custom rom was so much more more snappier and I miss all the customizations I could do.
The only think I noticed that's good about going official is my battery is lasting so much longer now.
I didn't charge my phone since yesterday morning, and I still have about 40% charge, something I didn't witness before on a custom rom.
Hope I helped.
As great as the custom ROM's are, it seems they all have some issues with something not working. Does the official ATT rom also have those issues?

I didn't run into any issues, if there was a issue those great developers always fix any problem with updates.
Why don't you just root your note, create nandroid backup of your official rom, than just go nuts trying out different roms?
That way if you don't like it just revert back to stock.
Trust me, you wont regret it.

I have done that. I've run flapjaxx rom as well as team perfections rom and as great as they are, they all have minor issues( I base that on my experience as well as the many posts by others). I can live with the issues, but i was just wondering what the ATT official rom was like, especially since i couldn't update to it. I guess it is a case of just wondering if i am missing something.
Based on what I am hearing, I am not missing anything. Thanks for ll the responses folks. Have a great day.
I have flashed a lot of roms starting with my evo. Liked them much better over stock. I decided to wait to flash my note, atleast til I had a reason to. Just got the official att ICS, HATING IT. Very Laggy, buggy, and many FC's. Stay with the customs!

I went through so much trouble returning to stock to get ICS, and in the end I wish I didn't.
Custom roms are the way to go.

My main problem with all the custom ROMs I've used on several devices is the tendency of them to work great for user X and horribly for me... or vice versa. You just don't know until you try them.
I've had almost no issues that I could blame on ICS... and after having various ROMs on my Streak and many issues I'm enjoying AT&T ICS. No FCs at all so far.....I will have to eventually flash CWM so I can use wifi hotspot for free but other than that ICS has been fine for me.

Tried both custom and official
I have tried several custom ROMs and I just went back to stock ICS yesterday. So far I am happy with the stock ROM. I do miss all the customizing I could do with the other ROMs but I need to be able to sync Outlook from my work computer and I could never get Kies to work with any of the other ROMs. I did experience the occasional Force Close, gps, and Bluetooth issues with custom. I have not had any of those with the Official At&t ICS upgrade. I will run it for a while...at least until Jelly Bean comes out for the Note and then I'll take that for a test drive.

I wanted to stick with stock b/c I've always rooted my prev android phones. I tried the stock ICS update and it was fine and I didn't have any issues with it being buggy or laggy. However I wanted to be able to flash a different email client and try out a few other hacks that required the phone to be rooted. So I then rooted and flashed this stock ROM.

The rom is excellent, really fast, solid, smooth, and better than stock ICU battery life and its still pretty stock, just hacked a little bit. I would go with that ROM.

I'm not sure if you've taken a look at Companionlink for handling the job of porting Outlook data to Android, but I've been experimenting with it for the last two weeks and just purchased it today ($39.99 with a promo code). Really great app. It requires DejaOffice on the Android side (free) and it will even port data in contacts such as categories. It then ports this data to the native Contacts app with the one caveat, of course, being that not all the data you pull from Outlook will be available in the native Contact app which is to be expected. It all still lives in the DejaOffice app, though. One thing it also does which I didn't think it would was to take a contact I add in the native app and then bring that to Outlook. Nice. It'll also bring your calendar, tasks, notes over, too.
I have nothing to do with Companionlink, by the way, just been dabbling with it and I like it. Like yourself, my data lives in Outlook and I'm not dumping it to the cloud simply because Google would like it to live there.

Do you have to sacrifice something with each rom?

I was given a Verizon HTC 4G Thunderbolt today. My wifes old Fascinate was on the verge of dying, so it was perfect timing. I got her all setup with her apps/contacts and she started learning how to use her new phone..... but now that she's sleeping I figured I would "enhance" her new phone and maybe learn a little something in the meantime. If I don't manage to turn it into a paperweight
I've never flashed a ROM before, but I've rooted many phones. I managed to get this one rooted and have downloaded a few roms (haven't flashed them yet), but after going through the different options it seems like you are always sacrificing something with a rom, is this normal?
I found that one rom where the wifi didn't work (this is a must for my wifes limited data plan), I found another rom where the camera didn't work (We have 3 kids and her phone is basically her camera), I found another one where 4G wasn't supported (she's going from a 3G to a 4G phone, I want her to use that feature).
Anyway, it just seems like each one has something that doesn't work...Is this normal or did I just happen to click on the ones that have issues?

Which ROMs have you downloaded? I'd recommend ThunderShed for a Gingerbread base. I used that for several months without issue. I'm on Liquid's ICS now and only have the reported camcorder issue although the camera still works.
I haven't flashed anything yet, I just started downloading roms and happened to notice that Liquid didn't have a working video camera. I can't remember the names of each one, but as mentioned before, one didn't have a working wifi, one didn't support 4G.... so it just seemed like each one was missing something.
I'll look into the one you mentioned, thanks!
If youre looking for a ics sense 3.6 based rom with everything working I suggest trying out nusense 3.6. its pretty good and everything seems to work. what I am running now.
If you want a GB then for aosp thundershed is the way to go. If you want a good sense gb rom skyraider is perfect when it comes to sense roms and everything works on those 2.
Oh and might want to ask your wife if she wants you messing with her phone. Messing with a womans phone is like messing with her kid not a great idea lol. I know my wife has told me if I root her phone she will kill me.

LOL, I'll check them out, THANKS!
As for me rooting her phone, she doesn't have a clue what that means, she just knows that now she doesn't have ads in her games and she likes that.
She did complain that the HTC interface is way different than the Samsung interface (DUH), are there ary roms that would make it look/act like her Samsung?
Samsung usually runs aosp so if you flash liquid ics she may not notice if you use a touchwiz theme.

Also some people has had the camera to stop working also after while. Yeah sense is way different than touchwiz. You could look for a theme that mimics touchwiz.
You could download a launcher like HOLO, Go launcher and AWD (think thats what its called.) .
I will second the recommendation of Thundershed 1.6, which has been flawless since I flashed it (everything works, runs super fast and smooth, and battery life is way better than stock and most other custom ROMs). You do need to bear in mind that these are custom ROMs, meaning each is designed to reflect the priorities of the designer and involve a certain degree of risk (rooting and replacing the stock ROM invalidates warraty), but in my experience the custom ROMs I have used (only two: BAMF Son Of A Bliss aka SOAB 1.4; Thundershed 1.6) have been as stable (if not more stable) than the original Thunderbolt. Also keep in mind, *every* device is different and custom ROMs act differently on every device.
Those caveats in place, I'd research different custom ROMs, and how each can be customized with different launchers, lockscreens and themes, and try one or two out. The Sense-based ROMs will act more like the stock Thunderbolt. Sense based ROMs include SOAB, Skyraider Zeus, and BAMF Forever, and the AOSP ROMs include Thundershed, Liquid Smooth 3.2, and SFK's CM7 build. While everyone is excited about the new ICS custom ROMs they still seem pretty "BETA" (Santod's NuSense 3.6 seems furthest along) like and so I'd wait until all of the bugs are worked out and focus more on Gingerbread ROMs for your "daily driver."
Hope this helps.

[Q] Stable ROM w/o TW

I'm not a huge fan of TouchWiz (not to mention the bloatware) so would like to see what my options are. I'm looking for something stable & plain as a nexus. Always heard good things about CM, but their only i605 version is 4.2.2 and has known BT & GPS issues? Looks like beans is my best option. Anyone have any other suggestions?
Why do some of the google apps have to be added separately. Can you not use the play store w/ custom roms?
Any benefit to using ODIN w/o unlocking? Or is unlocking required since VRALL4? Looks like there is enough documentation now to reset the custom rom counter, lock, & unroot in case something goes wrong & have to use the warranty. Thanks.

Beans rom is still TW just themed to not look like it. CM is your best bet for nexus like feel. If it makes you feel better even the nexus 4 with a stock build from google has BT problems.

Oh ya? I didn't realize that. Any reason CM went straight to 4.2.2 instead of getting a more stable 4.1.1 release out for the i605?

Regarding the bloat, most of the ROMs get rid of that (even the TW based ones) so that will be a non-issue, and if you use a custom launcher most of the TW signs are gone, with the exception of the cool ones (multi app, s-pen, smart stay). With CM-based ROMs, which I have used on other devices, you flash GAPPS separately, with Beans you choose which GAPPS you want during the install using Aroma. Once you are installed, the play store will work fine (but it won't be there on CM-based roms to start). I use bluetooth and like some of those TW features, so CM ROMs are a no go for now for me...been on Beans since January and have been very pleased with it.
You will definitely need to unlock first though using Adam Outler's method (CASUAL + ODIN) and there are easy ways back to stock if you ever have to do a warranty swap.
Go with Beans FTW! :good:
As another 4.2.2 option, I'd try CarbonROM. Fast, stable and smooth. My DD. Very few issues at this point.
Beans is awesome if you want to stay with a TW-based ROM.

[Q] Hyperdrive or Synergy ROM?

Hey guys,
In terms of speed and battery life, which one is a faster ROM? And for someone who has tried both, which did you prefer? I've nothing personal against Hyperdrive, but I'm just exploring options. I've gotten more comfortable with the flashing process and I'm looking for the best. And if it's not one of those two, what's the best out there for a Verizon GS4?
It's a tough call. I never tried hyper. It was the 1st rom to come out and I wanted to become more familiar with TW before flashing and by then cleanrom came out. I tried synergy. It is fast and has a couple awesome tweaks built in like all apps working with multiwindow without a separate app which is nice. I have found cleanrom to be the most stable and smooth. Your results may differ. Try them all and see what works best for you

Yeah, they are but it isn't meant to have all the latest and greatest mods. It is purposely built as a debloated stock rom with some tweaks for speed. If you want features galore, hyper is for you from what I hear.
Sent from my rooted S4 blessed with whatever the latest CleanRom version may be....
As every phone, every user, every setup, every signal, every way of installing is different the only way YOU can find out which has better battery life and speed for YOU is if YOU try it. Just make a nandroid backup and take each for a test drive for a few days.
There can be no definitive answer for these questions.

Is anyone content with ME7 stock with root?

Bought my S4 with ME7 from a N2 before I knew what was good for me. As a recovering flash-a-holic, ME7 has helped me appreciate the functionality and stability of a factory ROM. In the past, factory ROMs never really did it for me - mainly because I've owned devices where factory overlay versus hardware were never really equal.
Obviously AOSP was the way to go - stable builds of Cyanogenmod to be specific (nightlies and insert developernamehere ROMs always had insertquirkhere that inevitably revealed itself - being a perfectionist who loves minimalism, I had limited options. My ROM choice was always stable AOSP-built or TouchWiz with very light modifications (I looked for debloated, odexed ROMs with no mods, maybe volume key to change track).
Back to the topic name, has anyone grown content with their ME7 stock device? Obviously I'm anticipating Safestrap (I went from a Fascinate to a Bionic, then to GNex, GS3, GN2, GS4 for those wondering), but if it never reaches fruition, I could be content with this device for a little while. Opinions?

I have ran basically every custom TW rom but now im on an me7 stock rom (can go back to mdk) and im content with it. Im running the xposed framework so I can do some basic customization. Getting some awesome battery life too, day and a half with 6 hours screen on time.

Rooted, debloated with TBU, tweaked a bit with Tweakbox and Wanam via Xposed and using Nova, stock ME7 is fairly dynamic. Will I try a custom via SS, and/or via a custom recovery.....you bet. Am I OK with the GS4 as is? Yep. Best phone I have ever had by a long shot.
I used a 16gb S4 for couple days and then returned it and ordered the 32gb version online. I knew I had found my new phone because the only thing that bugged me was the bloat and that will go once rooted. Came from GNex, which I hated stock. Before that, the Incredible-hated Sense. So I was really thrilled with the S4 in all respects.
Question: When my new S4 arrives in the next day or two, what's the way to keep it from downloading the update before I can get it rooted? (I realize it may come already updated, in which case I'll just root, period )

The above would be the absolute 1st step/s. 2nd step is to freeze/uninstall SDM 1.0. and go to system root/data/fota/ and delete the ota file/s.
Getting rid of the bloat ware did it for me. My battery life is much better now than when I first got it. I still wish I could flash some different ROMs. I've never had a phone I couldn't do that on so this will be a first.

Actually, I'm ok with rooted ME7 for now. It's only been, maybe 10 hours, and most of that time has been spent searching and reading, but after removing all the bloat mentioned here and downloading blacked out apps from TBO Blackout Updater, I think it should be just fine. Especially coming from the ol' Fascinate.
My first Droid was a HTC Incredible. I went through tons of ROM"s on that. Everything from an ODex'd stock rom to MIUI. I ultimately ran MIUI with tons of customizations flashed via recovery.
With the S4 Im content with root and just getting rid of the bloat. I like TouchWiz more than I liked HTC Sense.
Just rooting alone and removing the bloat I can go 27 hours with 55% screen time and 8% GPS usage. I went with the 32Gb version and a 16Gb Microsd card with tons of wallpapers, notification sounds, etc.
Very content.
I used to be a flash-a-holic, but in the last year, I have had a child and gone back to school. I have found very little time or motivation to mess around with ROMs I don't like, have strange glitches, or are just plain unreliable. I know there are many good ROMs usually available for well supported devices, but the time spent trying one after another has worn on me. My Nexus 7 has been running the same fully functional ROM for a long time, and I feel no need to "update" to the latest version of the ROM just for the sake of having the "latest" when this is running rock solid.
Stuck on stock... hehe... has been good for me actually. Very stable, functional. reliable. After rooting, removing all the bloat (still just frozen until thouroughly proven to be safe for me), and installling HOLO Launcher HD, I am very happy. I am findng tweaks to polish the user experience more and more every day, and my battery life is much better than I thought it would be with this huge and gorgeous screen. I have had no issues with the heat or battery drain I read about and feared before diving in and buying this phone, and whether or not it is because the first thing I did was root and debloat, doesn't matter to me.
I love this phone, my first Sammy.

Just installed Viper4Android.......WOW!!
Stupid question I'm sure, but how do I "debloat"? Is there an app, or is this simply manually deleting unwanted apps? FYI, I have Verizon ME7 rooted.

Debloating is basically removing all the apps that come pre installed that you have no use/need for. There is a 1 click debloater posted in the dev section but I prefer to do it manually.
Hit thanks if I helped you out. Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way. Sent via tapatalk.
