I was switching my phone off and then on again when suddenly all the icons and customization I made went back to factory default. My installed apps are still there but they will crash once I open them.
Is there any way to find out what is the issue and how to resolve this? My phone is rooted by the way but I have been using for a year with no problems.
Thanks!

Is there a guide for wipe/reset? Does this mean the phone will go back to the factory 'unrooted' state?
Any help is appreciated as I don't want to mess things up further, thank you!
If you fullwipe you will lose all data on your phone exept for internal or external sd. Also this will not affect root.
This is safe exept if you're running 4.0.4, than you first have to flash a custom kernel who has the brickbug patched.

Search the forum for the answer this is a common problem. You will need Odin. Since you have bricked your phone install a custom Rom and Kernel. You will not go back to stock!!

What firmware was you using when this happened. You've sounds like it's recoverable. If download mode is all you can get your probably get best results by downloading official firmware from Sam firmware and extracting it then flashing the zip file in odin via PDA section. All the best.

I don't remember exactly my firmware but it was 4.0.3 and I haven't installed 4.0.4 but I did have CM10 just before I did restore from CWM and now I did factory data reset, this happened.
I prefer stock ROM, but I don't mind custom ROM either as long as I can get back to stock ROM

Flash a stock Rom via Odin. Wait till your phone boots up. Go back to Odin install a custom kernel (i recommend siyah kernel). Backup your stock Rom, then install a custom Rom. There is a lot of tutorials to tell you exactly how to do this process. If you need help at any point of this process just send me a message and I will give you a detailed walkthrough. You should be fine though!!

If you want stock then take your pick from stock firmware at samfirmware. Aviod the ones with the red warning triangles, risk of brick bug!

How about from the intratech's thread? And is the Odin flash failing risk big with the situation I have right now?
I've used odin A LOT and never had a problem. I only ever use the PDA section and never touch anything else because I don't understand it. I can't comment on intratechs thread as I've never used his software. Any custom ROMs are normally flashed via CWM.

This is because you flashed a wrong kernel for your phone.
# Quick question:
Is your phone on Gingerbread, Android 2.3.x or ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich), Android 4.0.x?
# If your phone is on ICS, then download and flash this kernel via Odin: www.gokhanmoral.com/public/files/siyahkernel/v3.0/Siyah-v3.5.2.tar
# If your phone is on Gingerbread, then download and flash this kernel via Odin: gokhanmoral.desean.net/siyahkernel/v2.6/Siyah-v2.6.14.tar

Thanks for that.
I have the I9100BVLPH stock ROM from T-Mobile UK on my phone so I downloaded the correct Chain Fire kernel (CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LPH-v5.2-CWM5.tar) from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 and this caused the phone not to boot.
Thanks for the link to Siyah, I used the v4.1.5 kernel and it worked great.
Hello there.
I'm in a bit of a trouble so I need some help. I've bought an S2 for my wife from a guy (in Ireland).
The phone was locked on Vodafone so I tried to root it maybe I'll be lucky to unlock it with out paying nothing. So, the phone is on Gingerbread with a BUKJ3 kernel. I've downloaded last night a CF root but by mistake I took a KG3 instead of KJ3. After flashing with Odin 1.85 I got stuck on the boot screen with the yellow triangle.
This morning I've downloaded another kernel as in KJ3 flashed with Odin, the phone is starting but no network coverage, I tried with different Sim cards but nothing so I went in recovery mode and wipe/format data, system, dalvik and cache as factory reset as well. Since that moment the phone won't boot, it gets stuck on the boot screen and yellow triangle.
I can go in recovery mode and download mode with no problem but I can't make it start.
I reflashed the kernel, I don't know what to do and tomorrow is my wife's birthday and I was trying to surprise her with a nice phone but instead looks like she is gonna get a brick ( I hope not)
Thank you guys for any help.
Go to sammobile and get something like unbranded XWLP7 stock rom....flash via odin

Thank you for the reply. I don't mean any disrespect but for the last 3 hours I'm looking over kernels and forum and my brain is really wired now maybe.
I've had a look at sammobile but I can't find what you've recommended. A more specific link will be more than helpful.
Thank you very much anyway. If I'm getting advises it means I didn't bricked the phone so I might be able to fix it.
Once again thank you.
You just go to sammobile, then register, then firmware and files, then put the info in the 4 fields
eg
Smartphone
Android
Gt-i9100
Then uk/ire XEU (or vodafone or whatever..but unbranded better)
Then youll see a list about firmware version and their release date
Eg
Lpt 4.0.4 ics jul 2012
Lp7 4.0.3 ics apr 2012
So download lp7 4.0.3 and flash with odin.
Then use the rooting guide in my sig
Then do the other things I said.

Thank you very much. In the mean while I've managed to find exactly what you've said in your answer. I've choose the gingerbread version of the ROM cause that was what the phone had when I've bought it.
SO, now is it safe to go on ICS like I did half an hour ago with that Gingerbread rom?

People contact Odia when theres a problem with their efs folder/no backup.
But you should have a backup and a nand backup.
I had the same problem yesterday and I restored efs folder/restored nand backup.....which got it back.
So try that or theres a thread about "restore imei in 9 easy steps".

I know I was stupid enough not to read before flashing, but now it too late to think about that.
the thing is I've never used a galaxy phone until these days and I wasn't aware of all this things and I don't know how to restore this NAND backup IF I have one, as I didn't make any backup before flushing. I hope I'll get some help from somebody and as I've said, a nice donation will be on the way to the helper.
Try GSII repair app.But you have to be rooted.
Hi all!
I am new here and wanted to know one thing. I am searching for methods to root my SGS 2 and found a thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
I wanted to know is there any chance that it will brick my kernel? I saw at some threads that ICS 4.0.4 is likely to be bricked when hard reset after root.. Kindly help me clearing this issue..

If you don't bother reading the warnings on this site before messing around with your phone, you and you alone are to blame.
Wiping while on stock 4.0.4 is inviting trouble with the brickbug.

Very good 1st post. There is nothing wrong with that guide. It roots the phone via temp cwm.
So you then flash like a siyah 4.1.5.zip kernel which gives you perm cwm and leaves you safe from brickbug.
Your mistakes were
1.wiping when not instructed to
2.not having safe kernel when wiping
Lol

im a noob here but did you check if you had the brick bug ? im on 4.0.4 and i had it . did you flash a different kernel first ? a lot of the 4.0.4 have this bug !
I can get to recovery and download mode both and tried to restore to factory data but didnt help...
No I didnt check that yet. How can I do so? I used the "XWKDD_insecure" which I used before on 4.0.3 and worked well before...

XWKDD is Gingerbread, 2.3.5, I believe. It would never work on 4.0.3.
EDIT: just went and looked - XWKDD is 2.3.3, actually. Even older.
You can download and flash something like the latest Speedmod K3 kernel, which should get your phone up and running, and even root it.
EDIT 2: I see by your activity you are currently reading the thread [GUIDE] And then there was ROOT !... well, at the very top of that thread it reads in big bold red letters:

This whole brickbug issue appears with stock recovery, not with custom ones. And it's only with 4.0.4, so the OP won't notice any brickbug at all if he uses JB.

To answer your question: No it wont. brick bug is in 4.0.4 kernel.
Now answer my question, why are you flashing the leaked/beta rom when the public/final has been released??
