general knowledge thread on xda

I have an Asus Infinity tablet. I rooted as soon as I could, but kept it locked fur a while because of warranty issues. Finally, I bit the bullet and unlocked because I wanted to play with ROM's. I haven't had any problems, and I'll unlock my p769 as soon as available to.

[Q] Risks on rooting and flashing

Hi guys,
I wanted to ask some things... I found a guide on how to unlock the bootloader and root my device by flashing recovery and permission tool. I wanted to know if there are some risks and what I risk. I also wanted to know about risks during a ROM flash. (I use a notebook).
Thanks a lot, Ruben.

This is a question (you even titled it as such) that belongs in the Q&A Forum.
Have read any of the articles you can find via Google yet?
If you only unlocked the bootloader and are still S-ON the risk is relatively low since you are limited in the partitions you can flash. I've never heard of anyone bricking their phone when flashing ROM's with S-ON.
Once you are S-OFF, you can flash pretty much anything and can brick your phone if you flash a ROM or firmware intended for another device. Like a lot of other things, the more freedom you have the more careful you need to be.

[Q] L9 P765 - Rooting and Bootloader questions

Hi Guys. I will be rooting the Indian Variant of L9 which is P765. I have few questions as to confirm them again.
1. By unlocking the bootloader, there is no way to relock it again? So I will permanently loose the warranty?
2. If I use this method for rooting - which is root with locked bootloader, then I will not be able to try CM 10 or 11 builds?
3. To have CWM in JB with locked bootloader, we need to try the method in this thread, but I am not sure as to what actually needs to be done here. Can anyone give a step by step method?
Clarifying this will be greatly appreciated. I have read the guides from cmahendra in the general section, however just a few questions and confirmations as above.
Thank you.

Hello Harsha,
1. As per my knowledge there is no any known method to relock bootloader. That means yes, once bootloader unlocked, you will permanently loose warranty.
2. This is the easiest and safest method to root L9. click here
3. Use this tool to install CWM without unkocking bootloader. click here

[Q] HOW TO unlock bootloader on android 4.4.2 CM 11 Galaxy S3

Hi. I have question about bootloader . I am not 100% sure if i have unlocked bootloader so could somebody can tell me how to do it properly , safely on Galaxy S3 with 4.4.2 android ( with Cyanogenmod 11 ) ?
I was given a answer in my first post that i have unlocked bootloader beacause i have installed the CM11 with their installer . But after trying to find a answer if i have unlocked bootloader on other sites in the mean time of waiting for answer here , i found a lot of contrary info, so i am a little scared to try with bigger mods to my phone ( kernel) . So - how to unlock bootloader on my specs ? or how to check if i have this already ? thanks
if you have a custom rom you have an unlocked bootloader:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Bootloader
Bootloader on the S3 is not locked, there are no 'unlocked' versions as it was never locked in the first place. S3 is easy to flash and mod, but also to destroy in the process, backup your efs is the primary concern.
Mod Edit
As per the XDA RULES # 5

unlocking h831 bootloader?

i see a lot of tutorials on how to unlock the bootloader for the h831 while searching. has anyone tried these?
i'm curious because i'm getting the g5 tonight. and i might want to root it in the future.
There is no bootloader unlock for the h831 and there isn't one in developement either. If you really searched on the forums, you would have realised this yourself.

actually, there is one:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/how-to/guide-adb-root-rw-dm-verity-off-sprint-t3523499
some have reported it to work. thanks though. and i didn't say i searched the forums, now did i.
Firstly, what you found isn't a bootloader unlock nor a "normal" root method (with supersu and all the bells and whistles). That is actually an userdebug kernel and an adb root is pretty limited for non-devellopers and you shouldn't use it ubless you know what you are doing. So I actually didn't lied to you as there really is no bootloader unlock available for the h831 nor one in devellopement.
Secondly, when you post a question in ANY forum, everyone expect you should AT LEAST make a quick search in the forum iteself or google it. Why ? Because if everybody ask questions without checking if they have been answered, the community is stuck at posting the same answer again and again, wasting everyone's time and ressources. Why somebody should take his own damn time to answer a question if the other person isn't even ready to make a quick 1 minutes search ?

seems like you're angry...how about you just get the hell out of my thread eh?
i asked a question in the QUESTIONS forum! it doesn't matter if it was asked before. if you don't like to answer with kindness, then don't answer at all.
thanks for the info though.
