Hi,
Can somebody tell me if it's possible to upload the GPS lat/long co-ordinates to my internetsite via GPRS connection ?
I will try to plot my trip realtime on a map while driving my car
I have a XDA, TomTom and a Leadtek GPS mouse.
See for example this site:
http://www.gowireless.ch/mobile/english.html
Hope one of the developers can help me !
Tnx R.
Yes
There is no reason why this would not be possible. You just need to write an interface to the GPS driver, when then sends co-ords (possibly as an HTTP PUT) to a server. The server can then place these on a map.
I don't know what the cost involved in keeping the GPRS connection alive is, but the co-ordinate submisions should be fairly small. Of course the cost also depends on the 'frequency' of the updates - ten minutes, 2 minutes - 2 seconds? I would suggest no less that 30 seconds - it could take 10 secs to update the page, and people to conect to it.
Interface and GPRS costs
Hi martinlong1978
Do you know if there is'nt already such kind of interface ?
I think the costs for uploading x,y every 30 seconds will be no more then € 0.05 per GPRS/hour
P.
I don't know if this already exists. I'm sure something like this exists, because it is often used to track trucks. It is quite expensive though. I am looking to build a free version.
I've asked Tom Tom for an SDK for their driver, but I fear they will say I have to buy the navigator SDK ($200).
If anyone knows of an SDK for the TomTom GPS Driver it would be a help, then I can build the 'GPS logger' software.
Freeware GPS Logger ?
I think there must be (freeware) software that drop's the x,y received from the GPS in a *.TXT or ASCII file.
Maybe it's possible to open one of these files upon selected interval time and sent the data to the desired Internetsite ?
Anybody suggestions ?
TYnx P.
Ive found an article that I can use. This is written primarily for VB, but I'm sure I can use the principals in C++.

A good solution is to use the GPS library from chaeron (http://www.chaeron.com/gps.html). Its free and can handle Garmin and NMEA protocols from your serial port and does a lot of other things also. You need the Superwaba VM to be installed on you're PDA (www.superwaba.com).
The. The drawback is that you probably need to do some programming in Waba (a subset of JAVA).
For the uploading there are several solutions. If you're using GPRS I suggest use a TCP/IP network socket (waba has a class for it) and use that to submit the information to a webserver or an other server (can be just a simple java thing listening on a port).
anyway good luck
Arend
I am creating a App in Evb that will take te GPS and stor it in a text file
on the PDA. I am using it for tracking history.
My program uses code that i have created on my own
You can use Bluetooth or a hard wired system.
This works for me:

Hi All,
On my Diamond i use Oziexplorer CE for viewing and using landmaps (I think thats the English word, the Dutch word is "stafkaarten." Please correct me if i'm wrong).
I was wondering if there is an app for android that can do the same. I'll be receiving my hero any day now and this is the last app i need to replace.
Many thanks in advance.
If there isn't any, thats allright too. Then at least i can stop searching
Google maps or Route 66
don't know of anything (Google Maps or Route66 or CoPilot or whatever is NO alternative for OziExplorer ).
Did you try asking the authors of OziExplorer if they have an Android build in the back of their heads somewhere?
Maybe this can be interesting?

sounds interestimg, ill try ...
did some tests with ownmap, but the map utility doesnt work and devs are not responding to mail
P.S: Looks promising, however, there are certain challenges with the conversion of ozi files, some segments are distorted and its about 200m away from the actual point ... In ozi, the maps are very precise. Will test and do some research, I'm shure, theres a solution to the 'minor' problems
Well, the month of august in Spain is the "hollidays month" and for this reason it's possible that developers are absents.
I like Oziexplorer and CompeGPS with my Windows Mobile PDA, and I will try change to Android with a new PDA HTC Hero and test this software Oruxmaps in it.
Greetings
OruxMaps
Obviously I did a mistake in converting, a second try lead a to much better calibration. First impression is very good, OruxMaps shows my position and let me record tracks and logfiles, I can set waypoints and follow a route (not tested yet). First wish: a tool to lock the keys and blank the screen to save energy why tracking a hike ... But as said, very promising application
looks very promising indeed. Does anyone know how to convert ozfx3 files to be used in this app??

never tried it, as I have the original files ...
but you might try demapper from terraperfecta
Can't download it from the market. Known issue?
I've created an Android application called Viamici for which you do not need a PC to calibrate a map - you can do it on a phone
New ideas for Ozi or substitute on Android?
Does anybody know about new developements on the problem: Running Ozi on an android-device?
Next wekk I visit the USA and will buy a Nexus One. It would be great if I could go on with all my Ozi-calibrated maps. Thanks for any idea!
"We are currently doing trials and evaluating whether we will develop an Android version." - http://www.oziexplorer3.com/ozice/faq_os.html
Some encouragement from our side would not be bad: [email protected]
Encouraging?
and this was Ozi's answer to my encouragement last week:
"An Android version will not be available for a considerable time."
Ozi Explorer replacement
Hi all,
Some time ago I wrote crossplatform library for reading Ozi Explorer maps
(_ttp://code.google.com/p/swampex/) and Ozi Explorer equivalent for Linux
(_ttp://code.google.com/p/ozex/) - and even used it in offroad competitions.
Moreover, I started project for Android and got a development version.
(_ttp://code.google.com/p/yozi/).
Unfortunately, it was discontinued due to the lack of time, but if someone want to take a part in development - please contact me.
BTW, I'm rare visitor of xda forum, so e-mail will be preferred way.
Best wishes.
yozi: replacement for ozi explorer on android
I've decided to reinvent the wheel and released alpha version of yozi - Ozi Explorer replacement for Android OS.
Features:
- Topographic maps rendering (ozf2/ozfx3 formats)
- Maps automatic load for a current location
- Switching between more/less detailed maps for a currend location
- Movement tracking using internal GPS receiver
- Import waypoints from GPX, KML, WPT files
- Show waypoint on Radar screen
- Shared waypoints database with RMaps2 application
- Worldwide search for places by name using Google's API (requires network access). You can search for a city, street, lake or river and view it's location on your topographic map.
Can be downloaded here (sorry, I'm novice here and can't post direct URLs yet):
_ttp://code.google.com/p/yozi/
Yozi works great!! It reads directly the Ozi maps files used in the Pocket PC/Windows Mobile Oziexplorer. There is no need to convert the files using a Desktop computer. Like the Windows Mobile version YOZI can read ozf2/ozfx3 files. These can be converted from other format using the normal desktop version of OziExplorer.
Congratulations!
I really recommend it to everybody. Easy, simple and clear app:
http://code.google.com/p/yozi/
BTW: Why is it not yet in the Market?

REQUIREMENTS
Devices running Windows Mobile 5 or later (touch screen).
Internal GPS.
Car charger (for FindMyCar functionality).
Microsoft Compact Framework 3.5
DESCRIPTION
ParkingAssistant includes three functions:
Find A Parking Lot – Shows parking lots in your vicinity.
The basic parking lots data was collected from openstreetmap project.
The green parking lots were reported by users as non-paid parking lots.
Report Parking Lots - In our project we will try to refine the data concerning non-paid parking lots accuracy and contribute the data back to the openstreetmap project using your help.
Find My Car – Estimates automatically where and when you last parked your car.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES
Your speed is displayed on the Windows Mobile Today Screen.
GPS is kept "hot" when connected to the car charger - meaning that you get immediate fix when launching navigation software or any other software that uses the GPS.
You can now see the time that has elapsed since you last parked your car.
INSTALLATION PROCESS
Install ParkingAssistant cab file to the device memory (not to storage card).
Run ParkingAssistant from the programs list.
BRIEF USER GUIDE
The ParkingAssistant application is now running at the background. To bring
ParkingAssistant to foreground us one of the following:
1- Click on the ParkingAssistant Today Screen item.
2- Click or on the ParkingAssistant task bar icon at the bottom of the screen.
3- Select the program again from programs window.
4- Use task manager window to show the list of running programs and select ParkingAssistant.
Click on the FindAParkingLot icon. If GPS signal is available your location and the parking lots in your vicinity will be displayed on a Google map (blue balloon – your location, green balloon – reported as free of charge parking lots, yellow balloon – unknown/paid parking lots).
ParkingAssistant application runs in the background and uses the GPS to estimate where you last parked your car. The GPS is activated mainly when connected to a car charger to eliminate battery drain.
Once ParkingAssistant succeeds in estimating your car's position, the car position can be displayed on a Google map - for that an internet connection is required.
To find your parked car, click on the FindMyCar car icon (on the left). Your car's location (red balloon) and your location (blue balloon - if GPS signal is available) will appear on a Google map.
Click the ‘X’ icon to bring ParkingAssistant back to the background.
You may kill ParkingAssistant temporarily (till next device reset) by clicking "kill" in the settings window. You can remove it totally simply by uninstalling the application.
ParkingAssistant uses a virtual GPS port meaning that other applications can access the GPS at the same time. However there might be older navigation software that do not work in this mode. You can try to do a GPS port re-search in your navigation software or kill ParkingAssistant

The reason for having the application run in the background is for the sake of Find My Car functionality. The idea was to provide a general solution for parking issues which caters for both FindAParkingLot and for FindMyCar, however if this is bothering users, it is be possible to split the application into two - FindAParkingLot (which doesn't run in the background unless the user invokes it) and the old FindMyCar.
this is pretty cool i'm goin to keep an eye on this thread
Trying it RIGHT now !
GREAT JOB
I have written a new Windows GPS application for outdoor activities. It uses free maps from the internet, and shows road maps, satellite images and, in the UK, OS maps. It has a simple route planner and records trails of the path taken.
It differs from existing applications I could find in that it can download data for an area using a home broadband connection, and then work offline in the field. This avoid excessive data charges when roaming, and also allows the program to be used where there is no phone signal.
The program comes in 2 versions - a desktop one for XP/Vista/Win7 and a mobile one for Win CE, WinMo 5 & 6 (but not yet 7). It works on legacy Win CE SatNav systems. The desktop version can download data to the mobile device or, if it has internet access, the mobile unit can download its own data.
I hope sell a version of this, but am currently finishing the development. If any-one would like to try it and provide feedback, I would be very grateful.
Where to download a trial-version from?

Ok i am a UK user and would like to test your software my device is a htc diamond VGA my PC is running win7 quad core ATI CrossFire ,I will PM my email
Please send me a private message if you want to try it, and I'll send the download link. I want to limit the number of users until I'm reasonably certain its working reliably.
Greetings all,
Yes, I have searched...
Is there an Android app that functions like MSVC only a little better? MSVC is a standalone application that requires NO carrier bandwidth to perform it's duties. I am considering a switch to android away from WM6.x. I have found MSVC useful on WM and don't want to loose this kind of capability. Again, I am looking for a standalone app that will not use any service outside the phone (except the connection to the BT earpiece of course). All the 'apps' I have found when searching appear to use Google or other services that, while powerful, force more bandwidth consumption($$) among other things.
Hopefully,
Peter
Cyberon voice command is the only one I'm aware of.
Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk
Actually it's not the only one. Try Vlingo which is default application used in Samsung Galaxy II. Works pretty good and better than Cyberon, much better
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.vlingo.client&feature=search_result
Bluenote73 thanks, but as I recall cyberon requires some Google service - indicating to me that it is not standalone...
Emt thanks also but again, Vlingo also seems to rely on network services. This from a review:
The first thing to note is that the application needs network access for faster processing of voice commands. The data usage is quiet low averaging around 1MB for over 150 voice commands.

There are times I need to rely on functions in my phone even if there is no cell service. Only a standalone App will fulfill this requirement. Yes, it may be that the data used is small but thankfully, 1 or .1 still does not equal 0!
Thanks,
Peter
Well, it works fine without data connection. Just try it out as you won't find anything better at the moment!
emt:
Glad to hear it! I will certainly try it. The devil is in the details with these things and sadly, precious few want to spend any time on them.
Thanks for your input.
Peter
You're welcome
Well, m1c4d0, I tried and it doesn't work! It will only if wi-fi is connected (I am avoiding a data plan -opted out on my account -ATM) and when I turn wi-fi off I have no VC. WiFi on = VC works.
This is disappointing. MSVC was far from perfect but was functional - for me anyway - and that on a device with far less power. I used it on both the Tilt and the Fuse.
Sadly,
Peter
