[Q] Porting Ubuntu Touch to Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello mates, glad to see you in this thread, thanks for watching and helping.
***Searching for developers***
First of all I want to say that my english language is not very well, because I'm learning it now and it is not my native language.
OK, let's get it started. Few days ago I saw an Ubuntu Touch UI and I loved it. If you love it too, you can help me and all the "lovers" of Ubuntu Touch. In this thread I will collect all information, files and sources about Ubuntu Touch.
For now I have got some links and info about porting Ubuntu Touch to the other devices such as our SGS3 international. I know that there is an Ubuntu Touch version for Verizon Galaxy S3. So now we have a chance to get it to our device. I was reading our forum for more info about Ubuntu Touch versions for other devices. I know that there are a lot of threads with questions like "How do you think, will it be possible to port Ubuntu Touch to our GT-I9300?" or "Can someone port Ubuntu Touch for our GT-I9300?", but this thread is not just a words or requests, I really have some info and files for porting Ubuntu Touch to our GT-I9300, here they are:
– Official Ubuntu web site about porting Ubuntu Touch to other devices - there are a lot of information about porting and also there are some files, programs and documents.
– Here is the Ubuntu Touch version for Verizon SGS3 - I think someone will have a profit from learning their package. BUT DON'T FLASH IT TO OUR INTERNATIONAL GALAXY S3 or you will get a bricked device.
– Some info about porting CM - may be someone will need it.
– Home page of Ubuntu Touch - here you can find the Developer Preview.
You need the following things on your SGS3 to flash Ubuntu Touch:
– CyanogenMod 10.1
– Ubuntu Quantal (I'm sorry, don't know, what is it)
So I don't really good at programming and I want you to make a port for our device, I can be a beta-tester, also I can help with something more, if project will be started, port will be made and work stable, I will pay some money to the developer of this port.
Let's try it? :highfive:

That would be XDA Developer forum and Chef Central for starters .

My answer to this is:
It has really no sense to port Ubuntu touch to the I9300 as long as there isnt a proper CM10.1 Port.
CM10/10.1 is the main condition to make a smooth ubuntu touch possible.
Exynos Sources are the main condition for a good, stable and fluid CM10/10.1 (which we still haven't got from samsung )
So better try to contact samsung, flood them with requests for exynos sources and if you get them, not the crap around on internet and github, give it to the developers like codeworkx from CM and you'll see a progress.
Otherwise you can forget a fluid ubuntu touch.

It's for Verizon Galaxy S3, read the first post carefully.
Sorry for my bad English, I study it at this time.
Sent from my Galaxy S3. OF.

There is a version that works here. But it's with many bugs and lot's of things that just doesn't work. It would be nice if someone complete working cm for gt-i9300

[Q] Developing "FrenchBread" and what is needed?

Hi,
I've started to download all the listed tools from AOSP and from Chulri's XDA post but wanted to start the discussion on what steps would be needed to create a gingerbread rom for our Gen8 devices.
My initial questions:
1- Would the driver's source from Archos that are currently written for 2.2 be compatible with 2.3? Can they reasonably be updated?
2- Aren't there two approaches we could use? Update the kernel to be compatible with 2.3 or back port 2.3 to be compatible with our existing kernels?
I apologize for probably sounding ignorant but this is all learning for me and any help is greatly appreciated. If nothing else, this thread would be a great place to discus the steps it would take to develop a Gingerbread rom from a high level stand point.
Mr. Clown - I'd appreciate leaving this in the devel forum since it is specific to devel for 2.3 and gen8 and not just an "is it possible" thread.
Thanks!!

do you have kernel dev experience for linux/unix?
if yes concentrate on cm a lot of development has been done.
there are phones who have almost identical components ( well the usb attached screen is a problem)
the recovery will be hell of a problem too..
if you never worked with that stuff (at least i hope you are a c crack otherwise look for other stuff to learn c .kernel development is one of the hardest stuff you can pick in softwaredev.) look for another project where somebody could guide you and teach you stuff the first project will be learning the second could be a very specific project like this where you have to work on your own

Hi, thanks for the reply. I've been reading just about all of Chulri's posts in his thread and I know $aur0n would answer specific questions if I asked. Other than that, I took a few C++ classes a few years ago but never took the OS/Hardware level classes. I stopped at advanced/e intermediate algorithms and data structures. Either way, I was hoping to start a discussion with this thread about steps that would be needed to happen to build a gingerbread ROM.
But if anyone wants to read along with me about kernel devel then you can start here with me - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11261995

Really Thank you for start this thread!
And when you've developed a gingerbread rom, i think the best would be if you work together with $aur0n Do think like i do?
And:
If you need a tester or somebody to do some little things, i'll do it
(At the moment i report some bugs at solune/sauron and test the bootscreens)
I want to help you with that cool project

i am sorry but you will not be able to develop a kernel with some classes you took i am a dev so i am quite avit with it i come from a completly different backgroud (windows software) but i have a unbelievable hard time to find a starting point with cm7 for sgs although there other developers around
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
That's understandable. If development is going to be tough or near impossible, I'd hope to try before I give up. Right now I'm learning about kernel development but would love it if someone could help me focus.
Is the touch display driver the hardest part to upgrade? What changed in 2.3 that makes updating the driver so difficult? Or would it be better to "back port" 2.3 to be compatible with archos's driver?

1) I would say one of the hardest parts
2) I think the archos drivers aren't compatible, so ...
3) ... this would be better because then you've better drivers support (for each hardware)
Again:
I think this project is assomeI'd love to be a helper/tester.

Any ROM's Yet?

are there any developers out there creating roms for this? It would nice to have a kernel at least, i know there is one out but its only for the european version. We need developers!!
I got the time for it but not the brain for it im best at testing roms
Doesn't seem that anyone's developing ROMs at the moment, although some are trying. I think first we need to get a recovery working such as Clockworkmod so we can flash the ROMs to the device.
I just got my player a few days ago, but I've been doing some research on how to port CWM to new devices and hopefully something will come to fruition. I'm not a programmer by any means, but I know linux pretty well so hopefully I'll be able to put something together.
Does someone know where there is documentation on how to install new ROMs using Linux? I don't have windows or Mac.
I'm trying to install 2.3.5:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389809
I believe the instructions are in the android developers kit, so I'll go there next unless someone has a quick pointer.
Thanks,
Daniel
I think the only way currently is with the software samsung gives you, but I might be wrong. Mine came with 2.3.5 on it - I'm using linux mint but haven't had a need to figure it out.
Some people over in the Android Development thread are working on it from what I hear. CM9 here I come!

[Q] Samusung XCOVER/GT-S5690 questions.

Hi all,
i'm a noob to android, but i have nit of experience on other unix based systems.
I was wondering, why there is no custom roms for GT-S5690?
What's the problem?
Is bootloader locked some other way or is it somehow different from example Gio/GT-S5660?
There is a bunch of roms for gio..
I have one xcover, wich has no screen and covers, i thought i could use it for testing.
I think there are too less people who have a xcover, and I was actually pretty disappointed when I say there is a successor to the xcover available only in the US (Rugby Smart / Pro <-- with ICS!).
From the technical side, I don't know. Even the source code of the firmware is available at opensource.samsung.com. The Bootloader seems pretty much unlocked.
For me, the xcover is the best phone ever, it takes so much abuse. Maybe someday someone will port a newer ROM from the Ace/Gio/idk. It's a shame Samsung abandons their old phones :crying:

I didn't were aware of successor models, now i'm very dissappointed.
I'm downloading these source codes at the moment, i'll check these out.
I'm not a developer, atleast YET..
AFAIK, hardware of s5690 is way different from any other samsung phones,
correct me if i'm wrong..

Seems like it's the only one with a Marvell MG2.
Let me know if you do anything interesting with the sources
Just flashed my xcover to XXLJ2 yesterday. At least it seems a bit faster now, but I have a weird bug when scrolling. If I give a list (for example settings) momentum, it doesn't stop when I put my finger on it again. But it does stop if I release the finger the second time.

Did the same. The GT-S5690_Platform.txt says:
Code:
How to build platform
1. Get android open source.
: version info - Android gingerbread 2.3.6
( Download site : http://source.android.com )
2. Remove external\webkit module in android open source which you got.
And then execute "clean build"
2. Copy files and modules to original Gingerbread source tree (overwrite)
3. build
- ./build.sh user
So wouldn't it be possible to download the JB sources, and compile them with the original kernel? Would be so cool.
Edit: It seems you need device specific binaries (drivers) since ICS. see: http://www.freeyourandroid.com/guide/compile-ics
Found a git https://github.com/manakeri/android_device_samsung_xcover, there is a
Code:
cyanogen_xcover.mk
file, this seems interesting. Apparently someone is trying to port it.
Edit2: In this git, there is also a "extract-files.sh"-file, which is neccessary to pull the proprietary files from the phone! With this I think we actually have everything we need to compile ICS/JB, like in the "freeyourandroid" tutorial.
I have never done this before, but someone must try it lol.
Oh look, there are more people who care about it!
http://www.droidevelopers.com/f338/14412-gt-s5690-opensource-kernel-available.html
Someone discovered my link and made a overclock kernel from the sources! This is so cool.
I hope we are going to see more :good:

I own an xcover too a developer on another forum looked at some files i pulled using adb to try to port clockworkmod but no success. Told me the files i sent weren't standard android img but he would continue to look into it. Apparently the teamhacksungs goal is to port cyanogenmod for every Samsung device surely they can get it done. I've been waiting a long time to see some development for the awesome xcover

If its possible on the galaxy mini its got to be possible on xcover!. Ive tried to get involved and learn to port cyanogenmod but when it comes to git, repo, source tree, source code e.t.c e.t.c its a bit behond me for now.
Step in the right direction it seems. Fingers crossed

[Request] Build from the source GUIDE

Hello there guys,
As we all know we only have 3? 4? developers for the HOX+ . And they are really doing all they can to help keep the phone upto date.
But as we all know they are all busy and can't update their roms that much any longer.
EDIT: Lloir already has a guide : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2187266 but I don't think he covers how to fix camera and gps and stuff
So! Is it possible to make guide on how to compile the rom from the source? I know tombridden and lloir already made a one post guide on how to build some roms but it was too specific.
I now have an extra machine (a laptop) with 500gb free storage and ubuntu as the main OS. It's quite powerful too with 6gb RAM and i7. So Why not use it to help the community while others are busy? In the meantime I will look around for some guides for other phones but I don't think they will help that much.
And please include the answers to those questions if you make a guide:
1- What to do to fix camera/GPS/wifi/Data/sensors ?
2- What approach should I take when compiling a new ROM. For example: there are no developers for PACMAN , how will it differ during compiling between it and AOKP/CM/AOSP .
I am talking about a rom that wasn't approached by Lloir so he won't have the repos for them. What to do then?
Thanks a lot and I can't wait to help
@Lloir @tombriden @PippoX3 @mike1986. and any other developer out there.
you can start by looking at XDA-University
The reply is correct. All of us moved first steps studying at XDA University.
Anyway the case is more complex than others.
For this device there are really few developers. Other device have a lot of support from constructors, many dev and the team-work result in a lot of kernels/roms to flash for the final user.
If you wanna taste the happyness for build a rom, I'll send you a guide to setup your ubuntu, download the sources and build.
But in this case, where enrc2b is not officially support, the things are more difficult.
You must have a minimal practical with java, cpp, android and kernel code (if so).
For the moment I'm in trouble to build an AOKP 4.2.2 with new kernel. I haven't device to try, 'cause the hard is build&&try continuosly.
Not the fact to have a pc turned on for hours and hours.... and the eyes&&mind open for hours and hours... but the patience to continuously try time after time.
Now I am in a dead point... many users like have S2W enable on new CM kernel... but.... the kernel won't!
Thanks a lot anyway. Thanks to @Lloir, @tombriden, @maxwen and alls who's workin' for this device.
Stay tuned....

That's what i did already. I set up the periphals/kernel/device info GITs and now i am looking for the roms, I found CM and stuff but I can't find PURE AOSP , does that mean i must download it and upload it?
I also have Oracle java installed. Do I have to have open JDK?

Now that we begin to have a solid CM base, will possible to build at least CM for enrc2b for noobs too.
And eventually "port" device/kernel" parts to others platforms. So who like e.g. PA can do...
If you agree, I can paste my personal appoints to a guide, from client setup (Sun java don't works) to the build zip rom.
Updated and corrected to last KK.

[Q] development

Hi, recently i bought the Meizu MX 4 Device Which is amazing!
although the Flyme OS is Bad.. , i Have a Very Little Knowledge in coding on IOS , and i have some questions
Im Interested On Building a CLEAN Google Rom For The Device (Like as Google Edition), And im Asking If its Possible ?
(The Flyme is Based Android 4.4.2)
~~~
Or There's Another Question
Is It Possible To me To Port The Meizu Device Into CM 11 / 10 ?
What Procedures do i need ? There's An Guide Outside the Web?
Hope To Get an Seriously Answer ,
You are out of luck I'm afraid. This OEM never releases the kernel source for the device and with that and other needed files for it there is no development at all. This is why no developer ever gets this device.
I wouldn't count on it. As a China based company they are not held to the GPL laws.
As for Ubuntu touch it will be the same thing. Ubuntu touch is almost completely a dead development project on every device so far. Not alot of interest in it.
You can hope but they have been the same for as long as they have been putting out devices and China doesn't require then to follow copyright or gpl laws.
