As you can see im new to this community, i hope i won´t bother you so much.
I got an S3 myselft and unlocked it right away before even using it. Did use Samsung S3 Toolkit , which i think its a great tool and this forum is a huge palace full of incredible geniuses so i´m really grateful for what is has done for me already.
As i stated in the title i´ve been getting serious problems after rooting my phone , everything working fine. or i think it is. But the UI in general became slow as hell , it crawls on the floor , pressing the menu butom to go back takes from 5 to 8 seconds to respond onto something , no matter what , oppening applications is not that slow but switching pages or screens is LAGGY as hell. I tried full wipe , cache wipe , before and after flashing.
Actually using this rom I9300UBEMA1_I9300UVOELL1_ARO its the Non branded version of my Local Firmwar (Argentina) , the kernel i use if the one that comes with Samsung S3 toolkit 7.0.0 the 4.1.2 unrooted version for JZ054K.ELLA ( file name :boot-insecure-ella-GTI9300 )
The original Firm and kernel the phone had was the 4.0.4 "Personal" Branded BLG6 Kernel.

Well people im sorry if this question sounds quite stupid or bothers some people but i already researched more than 200+ hours and i couldn´t find the exact point where i should be heading to solve this.
I would start with a fairly,near to stock Rom, I won't suggest any, just go to development and read up on the Roms, but also try a custom kernel.
Don't use task killers, they are counter productive if not used right.
I would also suggest going through what you have enabled, the smart features can heavily affect battery, also poor signal, and it might well be you need to check your modem (baseband) and see if there are other more suitable ones.
Keep reading and searching and you will develop a good understanding of various ways to make this phone fly, just don't rush things.
And, backup, backup, backup! Enjoy

He's right, try flashing a more popular widely used stock firmware like the XXELLA rom or the recently released ones. Also do post screenshots of BetterBatteryStats.. Kernel wakelocks are major reasons why battery drains. Often IM+Social Media apps use network data in the background and are culprits behind wakelocks.
I for one can confirm the Facebook native app as being a major contributor to the problem.
You should also check if "Fast Dormancy" is supported by your carrier or not? FD is by default enabled on the S3, disabling can save substantial amount of battery life. You can do so by downloading "Fast Dormancy Toggle App" from PlayStore.
As for custom roms, it really depends on user experience. I have used Omega rom and it easily lasted a day and half for me with good usage.
Currently I'm running CyanogenMod 10.1 and it lasts me 2 days

I'm awaiting delivery of my new unbranded and unlocked Galaxy S2 really looking forward to having the best phone on the market, since March last year ive had a HD2 which was/is a superb phone and has served me well but ive sold it on to fund buying this, i notice some user names on here who used to be post on the HD2 forums just have a couple of questions regarding the few ROM's which are currently available for the GS2.
The most popular appear to be Villian ROM and Litening ROM, both seem to have superior battery life and are very fast, the Litening ROM sems to be easier to flash (i stand corrected on that) and you can flash this without having to root your phone first, im experienced in flashing ROM's for the HD2 but this is all new ground for me so out of those 2 ROM's which would you recommend beginning with, any pro's and con's,etc,etc ive read both threads and both appear to be excellent ROM's, Pulser in particular appears to be a very skilled developer.
Also any other recommendations/tips you have starting out, is it a good idea to get rid of all the Samsung bloatware to preserve battery life,etc,etc.
I've read quite a bit on here so im aware of certain things already but even though ive been on XDA a long time im so used to the HD2 i feel like im starting over again (well i suppose i am in a way)

I made the same jump as you and Im very happy with it.
With regards to the "easiest" rom to flash, I dont think theres any difference really, as long as you follow the instructions carefully its really very simple.
The VR thread has very clear and simple instructions. You'll get used to it
Bloatware, I would reccomend just leaving it as it is and seeing how your battery life is. If you feel it could improve then start stripping things out and see if it gets better. I've only got rid of the wifi sharing crap and can still make it through a day with 40% left. That could probably improve as well if I bothered to tinker some more.
You could always flash the lite version of villain rom, which contains NOTHING.
Not really willing to compare the two you mentioned as I havent tried litening so that would be unfair. For me, the main advantage of using VR is the VillainTweaks app and the level of support available, should you need it.
Cheers for the response and tips, just one thing about the Villian ROM is it very stable with minimal or no bugs/lag?
I've already acesertained that the battery life is superior so that is great to hear,and i can see that Pulser unlike some devs does seem to be involved in the thread (support) which is also a positive thing.
I might keep the stock on it for a few days then flash, I suppose if your on XDA it obviouss your gonna be flashing a custom ROM at some stage.

Just a balance between speed and extending battery life that little bit more. It really doesn't feel any slower at 800 than it does at 1.2 but it uses less power.

I haven't seen anyone mention using X-Scope browser on these forums just Dolphin and stock, X-Scope for me was the best browser i know of and i used it all the time with my HD2 am i to assume this browser also works fine with the GS2?
Also does ROM manager work on the GS2, reason i ask is because when i had the HD2 sometimes after installing certain apps or a new ROM i would get force closes but after fixing permissions in either ROM manager or CWM it usually fixed that problem.

Just tested x scope and it seems to work fine.
Rom manager is not something I've ever been a fan of, theres no way of knowing what your flashing. You can fix permissions through cwm anyway.

hi just wanted to ask if there is a ROM there that is as close as the original ROM of the samsung galaxy s II in terms of apps and looks but is tweaked for better battery perfomance?
cause my dad bought a SGSII almost a week now, and we only get about 5-6 hrs of it using only it. already did about 4 charge cycles. (4 only cause most of the time the GSII is off, my dad's getting a hang it yet)
config:
- stock android 2.3.3
- 3g auto
- auto backlight (but we are inside a mall so the backlight is isn't that bright & have strong signal)
- auto sync is off
- background data is on
- haptic feedback is off
- audible selection is off
- fast dormancy is off
- power saving mode is on
- juice defender app in balanced setting
apps running:
-skype
-messenger
it drains a LOT even in standby a lot more when using it (browsing, not yet chatting). my hd2 is much more efficient knowing it is not a native android smartphone...
is there a tweaked battery efficient rom there that is as close or at least still looks as the stock?
You can do three things,
1- Install Better Battery Stats and see under 'Partial Wakelocks' to see whats running on background.
2- Stay on Stock ROM and flash a kernel which allows Voltage tweaks and install SetCPU and Undervolt CPU. Ninphetamine 2.1.3 is such a kernel.
3- If thats too complicated for you, then flash an Undervolted kernel, like SpeedMod.
I won't advise you to change to a Custom ROM for battery backup betterment. But doing the above processes will certainly save some.

thanks for the quick reply, so custom kernels work with the stock rom...i thought it won't. i'm not that familiar yet with native androids cause in HD2 most of the undervolted kernels there are already built in the roms so i don't change it that much now with the NAND builds....but anyway, i'll try for the mean time # 1 & 3....i'm not that into that #2 tweaks yet in a phone that is not really mine....
It is proven that Stock ROM's with custom Kernels have sweet battery life. As with Stock ROM's they haven't tweaked anything, it's just stock and you flash what YOU want, whereas a custom ROM you're getting things you dont infact need.
I keep going back and forth from Custom ROM's to Stock ROM's.

I would also recommend looking at SicOpat's ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1183774)
This is essentially a stock, rooted ROM with a custom kernel and I find it exceptionally good.
The other thing I would recommend then is to install Titanium Backup and freeze/uninstall a lot of the Samsung apps - WiFi Sharing, software update, *hub stuff. Removing these has a very positive impact on battery life.

I have also been troubleshooting poor battery life on my phone. I used to lose 10-15% an hour just idling. I reflashed Stock KH3 with the KH3 CF-ROOT kernel and reinstalled a few things (twitter, yahoo messenger, google voice, and some apps that don't sync data). Currently I had 18hrs now with 60% left. MUCH better. A lot of the time the phone was idle but I did listen to music, play some games, and browse the internet/chat, use wifi a bit. Phone only lost like 4-6% overnight. (sorry I don't have hard figures but I didn't document any of it on paper). I'm trying to find out what was killing my battery so I am installing things little by little but I would definitely recommend stock KH3. Seems great so far.
I think your problem lies with the wifi-sharing battery bug. I hear this is updated in newer roms. This was the biggest battery hog on my phone, but after noticing it, my battery life is excellent now.
When Wifi is turned on/off this erroneous process starts in the background called "Wifi-Sharing". It hides and drains your battery at a VERY fast rate. The remedy is simply to "Force Stop" this process after you use Wifi.
Let us know if that helps.
You could root the phone and install Titanium to freeze this process permanently.

sorry for the wrong forum i got messed up in opening a lot of samsung galaxy sII threads....
i dont see the "wifi sharing" in my dad's GSII when we used it. and as with kies, i think JKG2 firmware is the latest, so i assume that the wifi sharing bug has been fixed there, yes?
i know it would consume a lot since the GSII has a big "engine" but i didn't expect it to eat a lot even on standby with only YM and SKype messengers running in the background.
i'm still observing it. i'm still running stock.
EDIT: i just used wifi to download an app then when look for running apps, i saw "wifi-sharing" is running but i didn't even turned it on
i just flashed Speedmod T38 kernel (it seemed less complicated to use ) now observing if my dad's SGSII gets better
4) and it's very very annoying... so much so that I sometimes (multiple times in a day, actually) wish to get back to Android 2.3.3, which I had before updating to Samsung's (India) version of Android 4.1.2 for my GS2.
What could be the problem? I rarely ever connect to WiFi (am always connected to GPRS/EDGE, but that has never been a problem in the last 2 years... the phone still used to get nearly a day of battery life) and the brightness is almost always at the lowest. I rarely use Bluetooth, GPS, etc. I don't even use Facebook and WhatsApp anymore, so the screen isn't used to the max. I've turned off all the Location Sharing settings for Google Maps and/or other apps (I use very few apps anyway, but have a bunch of them installed on the phone... none that execute in the background though | also not more than a couple new apps after my OS upgrade).
It's been nearly a week since upgrading the OS on my phone. Last night when I hit the bed at 1.15AM my time, the battery was at 100% (after charging). With no activity whatsoever in the night, the charge had dropped to 88% by 9.35AM. That's less than 8.5 hours of no use and 12% charge gone. That never was the case earlier.
Also, for each minute of using the phone with the screen on, I notice 1-1.5% drop in the battery. That is, to put it very very mildly, PATHETIC!!!
I don't know what to do. Would a "clean rom" install help? If so, what exactly is a "clean rom" install?
Or should I be doing something else?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Personally, I tried different lightweight ROMs that are known to spare your battery. The advice to turn off 3g and other core functions never made sense to me, as I want an operable phone, not some sort of deflated piece of junk.
After reading on xda I went through Slimbean , Liquidsmooth, and other ROMs to see if they would increase battery life.
My current ROM is NeatROM 4.8, which actually seemed to give better results. Please note that this is purely subjective, though, I have no fancy battery analyses to back up my statement.
What REALLY helped was getting a replacement battery.
I tried Qcell 1950 mAh batteries. Stay away from those. They are clearly not 1950 mAh. Now running with a genuine Samsung 2000 mAh which is worth every dime.
Now I imagine you would be frustrated having to buy a new battery just because you updated your firmware and I do understand. I never owned the SGS2 before jb, so my choice was simple I guess. That having been said, though, the 2000 mAh battery really turned the phone into a whole new sort of usable. It easily lasts through the day even with regular use.

yea.. u said it...even i have tried several custom roms ( NeatRom, WanamLite,RR etc) all give 15-19 Hrs max.. and this also by tweaking all the settings..
S2 is a undoubted beast, but the cost in terms of battery is very hight..my previous Android Motorola Defy was a Mammoth in itself..huge custom fanbase and loads of ROMS + Awsome battery.
Any ways i got no regretts for having a S2..but battery s a lil concern..
Currently am on Asnet MIUI V5 and its going good..fast, responsive, smooth and decent battery of 18 hours avg..
@jsiv - i wanted to ask u a question.. which country u hail from ?? because the stock 2000 mah battery is not available in India, my region.

I live in Denmark. I ordered it off Ebay, but I see now that the UK shop I got it from doesn't ship to India.

Cyanogenmod roms are very fast ROM they are good as hell
Ur problem is genuine go to the playstore and download battery calibration app and follow the instructions in the app charge or battery up to 100 % and caliberate the battery u should have made an nandroid backup before upgrading

This has to be done every time you do a ROM upgrade or change ROMs.
CM has excellent battery life when compared to other ROMs.
If you are switching over to ICS stay away from version 4.0.4 as it has EMMC brick bug.Any other version would be fine.

As reported before, it seems that many official JB ROMS are not as optimized as other national versions and are battery hungry. It was suggested to upgrade to the French release (XEF).

I did this... and unfortunately, it did nothing in my case.
I went to the CM site, but I didn't find any stable build for SGS2. Is there a thread on this site I can refer to for the same?
Also, what's the best way to go about installing a different ROM? I have so many apps, sms messages, pics, mp3 files, 3gp files, etc. Sure I can take a back-up onto my SD card. But won't I lose all the apps once I flash the current Android installation and install a new ROM? Any article or video on YouTube that addresses these points? Please point me in the right direction. I practically don't use my phone even half as much as before and I'm having to charge it twice a day, as against once a day earlier.
Also, the rapid battery loss seems to be causing the phone to heat up a lot if I'm on a call longer than 15 minutes or having the screen on for 2-3 minutes straight.

There is no stable version of CM 10 on I9100 because of the some issues. You can flash one of the nightly builds.They might not be necessarily unstable.
No you wont be losing everything when you install a new ROM.You lose once you do a data wipe.It is suggested you wipe everything before you install a new ROM.
With a data wipe you'll lose the following - SMS,contacts,call logs,apps installed and respective data.
What you wont lose - Anything stored in the sdcard partition - Pictures, Videos, Music, Apk files and Anything stored on the Ext SD card.(unless you format them specifically)
Best solution is to use titanium backup app(You need root). This way you can backup your apps and resp. data,wipe data-install ROM,and restore the previous backup on the new ROM.

As far as the battery issue is concerned,do a clean ROM install through Odin.

I literally don't know what to do with my Samsung Galaxy SIII for a bout half a year ago i updated my phone to Android 4.3 and things went a bit weird. First thing I noticed was that the phone was really slow to wake up from standby, sometimes I had to take out the battery because nothing happen. The second thing is that it sometimes get really hot even on standby. I can't make it though half a day without charging my phone! Today it got mad at my phone again and was searching around the web for a solution, I came by lot of forums with people who was dealing with the same problem, but no fix able. I found a guy who had a an app which could register the battery usage in a graph. After running the app i noticed the same as the guy from the video - my phone is pretty normal on use, but then I turn the phone on standby it goes insane (look at the picture linked below)..
I don't know how to deal with the problem. I have gone though the applist to see any remarkable apps, but nothing has cough my attention.
I hope you guy are willing to help me - Save my phone!

If not, i'd recommend System Panel app. Download it, install, launch. Then go to Menu->Settings, check Enable monitoring option. Then let your phone to be in idle mode several hours - maybe before going to bed. After it - go to SP->Menu->Monitoring->History (in bottom right corner)->Press chart in top left corner->Top apps. Then you'll see top applications that worked in idle mode.

I think some app is malfunctioning , i would suggest using Greenify if u r rooted ,
And if u r on Stock ROM then i would suggest u to delete or disable the BLOATWARE.

4.3 on the S3 is extremely buggy especially without Samsung's patch ( which didn't do much ). There isn't much that you can do on stock Touchwiz, except maybe flash a custom kernel. I would suggest flashing a custom rom, but that is up to you. There are many choices for custom roms here including Touchwiz, if you like it.
I've been experiencing disappointing battery life since the android 4.3 update last month on my non-LTE t-mo galaxy s3. I know there's been a lot of discussion and advice by t-mo reps on various forums, but it simply isn't accurate. The party line is "something you installed on your phone is causing increased battery drain after the 4.3 update." However, my partner and I have two identical T-mo galaxy S3's. We have entirely different sets of apps installed on our phones. As soon as we installed the 4.3 update, both of our phones started to drain rapidly faster than before the update. On 4.2 our phones would last to 50% by the end of the day (~8pm) with light to moderate use. Now they're at ~20% by the end of the day, and I can see my battery levels drop faster just while using the phone. This is totally unacceptable. I've downloaded battery monitoring apps, and no apps I've installed are draining the battery, it's the system and kernel that take up most of the cpu. People are saying it's the touchwiz additions that are causing the system to use up more cpu cycles. I refuse to do a factory reset because there's so many reports of this not doing anything. There's clearly a bug in the 4.3 update for the SG3, unless it's touchwiz as everyone seems to indicate. How can I check to see if something is causing too many wakes?
4.3 works prefect here. same battery life as with 4.0 or 4.1.

at first: this is not a "whats the best rom" thread.
i have 2 very focused questions:
What are the idle times with those different roms?
Are there some Main feature differences?
Aktually im running cm11 m5 snapshot with smartassv2 Governor. its smooth but the battery life is kinda poor.
Im looking for a rom with long battery life. And i dont care about google now, talking to my phone(ok google) nor i need the special features from the standart samsung rom.
Would be realy helpfull if u can review to my questions. Greetings!

There are no definitive results, I have used both and I keep coming back to Omni due to the fact that on SlimKat music stutters like crazy when the screen is locked. Also, Omni updates are small enough to update often without having to download a complete update, to many users this a huge deal due to data limitations in certain countries. As for usage, idle time etc, like stated before, that depends entirely on what is installed on your device. Install a bunch of apps that need to constantly receive data updates and you will have battery drain and very little deep sleep. Where features are concerned, you kinda learn to live with limitations due to missing features on a specific rom. If you really want, you can most likely find an app that will bring a missing feature to a rom. I see a lot of people throwing their toys out the cot because one of the other does not have a specific feature implimented, yet the developers have done so with good reason, usually either performance or battery life.
With all said, there are many roms out there, Omni and SlimKat aren't the only players. It's difficult to compare roms nowadays because you are never quite sure if your kernel tweaking or custom kernel with it's hundreds of tweaks is the reason for a device not going into deep sleep either.
Give them all a try and decide for yourself, nandroid backups and apps like Titanium Backup makes it so easy.

im missing only 1 thing. if someone flashes all roms, doesnt install any apps. Only new rom and full wipe before, restart and tracks the time the phone has battery. Dont u think this is a possibility to compare the roms battery usage? i think there is no one who does this, but i probably will try this and put down a little table here. so people like me are able to see the rom with the best battery efficiency. so if they decide this rom has not enough performance, they can switch to "battery efficiency Number 2" and so on.

Sure you can do what you stated but bear in mind how will you compare the battery life across roms..
There should be some standardized test... Like looping video playback or some other method which does not change based on you usage habits..

Pa is another you're missing from you're list of developed roms. What you could do is test video playback, calls incoming/outgoing,one game of choice "high end battery draining game" and compere them all. As for the kernel tuning.. Read about what really happens and you will fine not a lot does happen with UV/uc .

You can compare but you have to use that phone for more days not like just one and you have to full charge and then discharge 2 or 3 times till the phone make the correct battery stats. So i think you can test but better with daily use or get an app that drains battey faster well i think this may work
