Battery issue - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

People tried to help before but failed might have been cause it was in the wrong section. Me dad and mum upgraded from 4.0 to 4.1 and noticed the phone is so slow, power saving mode no longer works as it should and the battery has at least took nearly 24 hours off the uptime. Seriously frustrating, how can we fix? NOTE rooting is not an option at all.

try a factory reset
go back to 4.0
hard to figure out without BetterBatteryStats what is draining the battery, maybe the famous Media Scanner?

Try a factory reset, seems to me some app in the background is doing its thing unthinkable with the 4.1... hard to know without any additional data!

Battery draining faster with ICS update

I just upgraded my SGS2 to ICS, since that the battery of my phone draining hell lot quicker than earlier. Earlier it use to go down by 1-2 % in the night (when m sleeping) but after update it go down by 11-12%
actually the battery performance should be better, right?

Hi,
I have same feeling. After a week on Slim Ics I can say that with GB my battery life was better. By 10pm everyday I was having left about 40-45% with GB , but with ICS the best I can get is :confuse 30% , mostly about 25% left and I'm having same kind of usage. It's true that with ICS it seems smoother and more responsive .

A fair price to pay.
There are a lot of threads on thus subject if you have a search of the forums.
I had the same issue on upgrading from GB but after following advice and doing some investigation and troubleshooting of rogue apps I now have much better battery life on ics than I ever got on GB.
Read the forums and follow the advice, track down the culprits and you too will reap the benefits

There are LOTS of threads on the subject. Use the search box at the top of the page to look for "battery ics sgs2" or similar and you will turn up pages of information.
The sad thing is the best piece of advice I found was that no two people will have exactly the same solution. You need to identify what is eating your battery using a tool like "Better Battery Stats" or "Go Power Manager". You then need to decide how important the culprits are and remove them or look for updates.
Titanium Backup is useful as it allows you to freeze apps so you can see if they make a difference. It helps if you are rooted as I found several stock apps at the core of my issues. You can't freeze them unless you are rooted.
Siyah Kernel is also very useful, it seems to manage power better than stock. I also found that a factory reset, clearing user data and clearing all of my caches (including Dalvik) helped enormously. It is time consuming to re-install all of your apps from scratch but it does seem to make a huge difference. It looks like some apps retain data from GB that caused issues in ICS.
I found that exchange services were using a huge amount of juice before I cleared all data and caches. That seems to stop completely after the big clear out!
The main thing is no two people seem to have exactly the same problem. It is important therefore that you take a problem solving approach, change one thing at a time and wait long enough to see if it works.
There's your bone, go chew!

Same old, same old.... These are the same tricks that work with EVERY ROM upgrade.... If u get a better battery life outta ICS than u did with GB, u really screwed up installing GB...

i usually get 2 days of battery life on ics 4.0.3....
First of all, you need to be clear whether you upgraded from stock GB to Stock ICS, or a Custom GB ROM to a Custom ICS ROM, since the Custom ROMs do offer better battery life over the stock version.
People here are giving great advice regarding the use of Titanium to freeze any apps that you are not using, e.g. Google+, Samsung bloatware, etc... - this will save the average RAM, hence the battery life. Also, do use Task Manager often (especially before going to sleep) to kill all the background apps.
I installed many Custom ROMs and now running Resurrection v2.1 and very happy with battery life. You must be realistic with expectations - read this http://blog.gsmarena.com/our-samsun...e-test-is-complete-check-out-how-it-did-test/
Overall, if you will do a clean install (format everything - internal/external/MMC and clear cache/Dalvik/battery stats) of Resurrection ICS v2.1 or Litening v3.2, then you should see even an increase in battery life!
Hope it helps and happy flashing ;]]

what ROM and Kernel are you using? checked OC settings? any additional apps running in the background without your knowledge? any recent apps you have installed?

I'm using Stock ICS 4.0.4
I'm not sure what you mean by Kernel as I'm new to androids, was an iOS user ..
How to check if apps are running without my knowledge?
Yes there are many apps I recenly got!
Get better battery stats from the play store, and let it run for a charge cycle.
Also turn off all the silly Samsung stuff like face awake etc etc
Does a reboot help?

a sign that some hungry app is churning away in the background, that's why I suggested bbs to help find the cause.
This kind of thing is nearly always a rogue process, just a matter of getting to know your new os and learning its ins and outs

Hi.
I had the same problem with one SGS3 from two I bought.
The one worked fine, but the second restart twice and more a day. I changed it in the shop. But the problem was still there. The akku was hot and after 2 hours without any input the akku was 0%.
I changed the phone the second time in the shop.
But also this device had the problems, sometimes the phone doesn't see the akku.
Then I had the idea, I looked into the device pressed the akku with my thumbnail and the akku worked.
With a little paper I fix the akku and everything is fine until today.

Hve u tried changing the kernel and seen for now
You probably have done something else your phone will not behave this way. I have an S2 since day one and despite numerous hacking & ROM/kernel change, I have yet to experience anything like what you had posted. Another possible explanation is a weakening battery.

well here are some possible solutions
1. Your battery was faulty meaning the one you bought was faulty bt worked for abt some charges
2. You have to many applications installed running in the background (keep the ones u only need)
3. try reseting battery gauage
4. you are charging ur phone while using applications and games which doesnt give efficient charging
5. Try airpush app to see weather there apps which are ad supported and remove them
6. try another jb rom with the latest siyah kernel which is currently in beta
try battery calibrate app
try installing betterbatterystats app (search on google play) and give a couple of cycles and then compare the log while changing/trying different kernels, and see which one works better for you.
make sure that you are not a victim of the media scanner issue:

battery died over night

hey guys, last night when i went to sleep i had like 50% battery left on my phone
this morning when i've woke up i wanted to check the phone but it was not responding like it was dead
i ve pulled out the battery and it still didnt want to power up when i pluged it back in. so i went to the charger and it started charging up. battery was dead like 0%.
checked better battery stats to see what was draining it.. nothing odd was there.
im pretty new to this forum so i wanna ask you guys for a lil bit of help here
were there cases like mine and if yes what was the culprit ?

So then you'll have to wipe and flash a full stock rom using odin, test before adding/restoring anything. If still the same then change the battery.

Dear Lord get me back on Jelly Bean!

God I really want to go back to jelly bean, kit Kat is a joke on the g2 nothing works properly anymore, my accounts don't sync properly so I don't get notifucations e.g no notifications on my phone but I open Facebook and there's loads, open Twitter and again loads, open email and gmail and again emails come through.
Quiet mode doesn't work without button bashing the **** out of the switch, quiet time timer just doesn't work reliably.
Knock code is intermittent sometimes it's really responsive sometimes I have to press the power button.
Battery life is nowhere near as good as jelly bean.
I'm done with buggy pile off ****, lg pull your finger out and fix it!

oh goddd ! !please god ! enough of the drama ! its a phone ! and its probably a bad flash, go do a full backup and factory reset your phone ! your phone JUMPED 2 android versions ! this is bound to happen. people who upgraded from 4.2.2 to 4.4.2 and have a perfectly working phone are just lucky ! about 20 billion changes ? mayb even more under the hood. stop complaining and just do a reset. and about the battery life, i get 4-5 hours of screen on time with 20-35 hours on battery. and btw when i just upgraded and did a reset i got a screen on time of 2 hours from 100-5%., im no the exact same rom and after a week my battery is back to how it was on jellybean. ie the 5 hours sot as i mentioned earlier. GIVE IT TIME! and i repeat. do a factory reset

That should probably fix most of the issues you are facing and as another member stated, the jump from 4.2.2 to 4.4.2 is quite a large jump. Use LGBackup if your like to backup your apps.
Dear Lord, let me learn how to flash a stock v20d kdz and remember to do a factory reset especially after an OTA update. So I could stop being a drama queen and be annoying to others.
Regarding the sync problem, did you by chance update by clearing data from the Google Services Framework? If so, it can completely break your sync, the best thing would be to reset from a KK .tot

Your problem is clearly due to user error. You can't make an aggressive, angry topic and then be surprised when other people are aggressive as well...
Try checking your wakelocks or other actually useful information.

You're the one kidding, right? Often does not mean always. I can manage to get as "good" as SOT as you if I am home all day and connected to a wifi network. More often than not, I'm not home all day and therefore I don't manage to get such a brilliant SOT. fact is, though, that I would sometimes get 5 hours of SOT on JB and have 25% left - that included playing 30-60 minutes of heavy games.

Instead of dear Lord or dear God, do please dear xda members, dear gurus, or even dear LG developers as God can't do a crap to help you here.
