Battery draining faster with ICS update - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just upgraded my SGS2 to ICS, since that the battery of my phone draining hell lot quicker than earlier. Earlier it use to go down by 1-2 % in the night (when m sleeping) but after update it go down by 11-12%
actually the battery performance should be better, right?

Hi,
I have same feeling. After a week on Slim Ics I can say that with GB my battery life was better. By 10pm everyday I was having left about 40-45% with GB , but with ICS the best I can get is :confuse 30% , mostly about 25% left and I'm having same kind of usage. It's true that with ICS it seems smoother and more responsive .

A fair price to pay.

There are a lot of threads on thus subject if you have a search of the forums.
I had the same issue on upgrading from GB but after following advice and doing some investigation and troubleshooting of rogue apps I now have much better battery life on ics than I ever got on GB.
Read the forums and follow the advice, track down the culprits and you too will reap the benefits

There are LOTS of threads on the subject. Use the search box at the top of the page to look for "battery ics sgs2" or similar and you will turn up pages of information.
The sad thing is the best piece of advice I found was that no two people will have exactly the same solution. You need to identify what is eating your battery using a tool like "Better Battery Stats" or "Go Power Manager". You then need to decide how important the culprits are and remove them or look for updates.
Titanium Backup is useful as it allows you to freeze apps so you can see if they make a difference. It helps if you are rooted as I found several stock apps at the core of my issues. You can't freeze them unless you are rooted.
Siyah Kernel is also very useful, it seems to manage power better than stock. I also found that a factory reset, clearing user data and clearing all of my caches (including Dalvik) helped enormously. It is time consuming to re-install all of your apps from scratch but it does seem to make a huge difference. It looks like some apps retain data from GB that caused issues in ICS.
I found that exchange services were using a huge amount of juice before I cleared all data and caches. That seems to stop completely after the big clear out!
The main thing is no two people seem to have exactly the same problem. It is important therefore that you take a problem solving approach, change one thing at a time and wait long enough to see if it works.
There's your bone, go chew!

Same old, same old.... These are the same tricks that work with EVERY ROM upgrade.... If u get a better battery life outta ICS than u did with GB, u really screwed up installing GB...

i usually get 2 days of battery life on ics 4.0.3....

First of all, you need to be clear whether you upgraded from stock GB to Stock ICS, or a Custom GB ROM to a Custom ICS ROM, since the Custom ROMs do offer better battery life over the stock version.
People here are giving great advice regarding the use of Titanium to freeze any apps that you are not using, e.g. Google+, Samsung bloatware, etc... - this will save the average RAM, hence the battery life. Also, do use Task Manager often (especially before going to sleep) to kill all the background apps.
I installed many Custom ROMs and now running Resurrection v2.1 and very happy with battery life. You must be realistic with expectations - read this http://blog.gsmarena.com/our-samsun...e-test-is-complete-check-out-how-it-did-test/
Overall, if you will do a clean install (format everything - internal/external/MMC and clear cache/Dalvik/battery stats) of Resurrection ICS v2.1 or Litening v3.2, then you should see even an increase in battery life!
Hope it helps and happy flashing ;]]

Bugs since ICS update

Since, i have upgraded my galaxy S2 firmware to ICS. There have been a number of issues. I have read around about issues related to wifi and battery drain. But i am experiencing a bit more than just these ones. Whenever i access my contact list and try to make a call, the phone hangs...or rather loads for a long time till the phone call is placed. Also, when i try to type a message the keyboard doesn't show up at times. Does anyone know any fix for these problems??? I have tried hard reset and clearing the cache option already. But it didn't help . I would really really appreciate if someone could give me a solution.
Thanks guys.

Sorry, I have no solution for the problem. I got the same Problems with my I9100G since I've updatet to ICS 4.0.4
The keyboard hangs very often and sometimes the complete Phone hangs for 10 seconds and more. The only workaround I've found is a little app called "Fast reboot pro". It kills all running apps with one click (I think there are some similar task killing apps in the market) and it helps. But that's not a real solution, I know.

You should more try to chill, it's better for health and soul. Maybe you was very annoyed and didn't see my words about the workaround? I'm assuming you upgraded to ICS from GB. I faced the same issue when I did my upgrade. Was very waiting so long for the official ICS upgrade.
I read some place that when you are moving from one version to another, like GB to ICS, its advisable to do a factory reset, wipe data, cache and Dalvik memory. So I rooted, did the above and flashed in a custom ICS ROM and its been smooth since.

Hello ares06, it seems to be the reason for that issues. I've updated my phone directly from GB 2.3.6
There were some threads in other areas and they said the same things as you. I've ignored that and it seems that I'll have now much additional effort. Man I hate it to do all the installations of OS and all apps. Would be better to spent effort next time with reading of how to's before I start any updates.
But thanks to you for that important answer.

I'm sure you must've read about rooting. My suggestion is that you root, install this app called Titanium (it backs up all your apps in a few minutes), factory reset your phone and wipe all data and flash in a custom ROM. After installation just do a restore of all your apps from Titanium. You'll have all your apps back in a jiffy. The whole process should take you max an hour. Totally worth it if you ask me

Hi Ares05. Thats cool. But which custom rom do u suggest?
since we're talking about problems, my SGSII (SHW-M250K, olleh KT) decided that after the update to ICS 4.0.3, it would stop reading my SIM card. I'm going to try going back to Gingerbread to make sure that the USIM isn't completely screwed because its also an NFC USIM authenticator. The SHW-M250x series is probably one of the most unique of the SGS2 family, because they are only sold in Korea, Hong Kong (and Malaysia i think). And i have lost sleep so let me put this in here right now for anyone that has an SHW-M250x series:
THERE IS NO ROM SUPPORT/ROOT KERNEL SUPPORT FOR SAMSUNG GALAXY S II ORIGINATING FROM SOUTHEAST ASIA - BEST BET IS TO FIND A GT-I9100 OR WAIT FOR SOMEONE TO GET OFF THEIR KEISTER TO BUILD ONE FOR THE M250x SERIES.
I will post later with details if the USIM is busted due to the update.
Samsung Galaxy S II (SHW-M250K, KT olleh)
Android Stock (ICS 4.0.3)
I'm in Indonesia (which is in SouthEast Asia) and my S II is rooted.
People sell GT-I9100 here anyway. But not in East Asia.

Battery issue after JB update

Hi guys,
I`ve bought international sgs3 some weeks ago with ICS, after using it some time, I decided update OS to JellyBean. After this I noticed that battery is discharging much faster than with ICS. Maybe there is a way to fix it?
Thanks for the answer,
same issue noticed here, try to disable google now no significant improvement observed!
No issues here after upgrade
No problems....
I've suffered from rubbish battery life since JB as well. Tried all sorts of different ROMs, tried trouble shooting using Better Battery Stats, and it's still not acceptable. I'm thinking about going to another phone, because i don't have the time to keep trying to sort it out.

Could be your battery, maybe is damaged.

try flashing a diff kernel (may be Dorimanx v7.22) and then see for the issue
Hi, sorry for breaking in into other people's thread, but I've been getting terrible battery life and random crashes. I tried severeal different rom/kernel/baseband/android versions combinations and always had the phone dying on me. The weird part was that it only happened when the phone was not plugged in. When it was charging, this problem would not happen at all.
Well, after your post about the battery damage I checked mine and it indeed seems a little bigger than normal. Do you think its possible that a damaged battery could cause it?

try with another Battery(a healthy one) may be one from ur friends phone(S2) and see for the issue, if its not there then its a confirmed hardware issue and time for a batt replacement
since a fat battery is an indication of it reaching its near end for u

Amazed the more experienced members who have replied to this thread thus far have missed the obvious & not suggested the OP install BetterBatteryStats. Something weird is causing that drain, I'm not understanding why you'd suggest someone go out & buy a new battery in the first instance when there's nothing outwardly physically wrong with the battery.
OP - Install BetterBatteryStats, have a look at the thread on here to get an idea of what kind of info/screenshots you need to post to that thread for someone there to help you out. Then do exactly that.

YW I'm not saying you'll definitely be able to track down what's causing the drain with BBS, but it's certainly worth a try before you fork out $ for a new battery (especially given your phone is still usable in the meantime). If you end up not being able to find anything with BBS, then you go buy a new battery.

But I can say tham I am heavy user
The reson I replaced it it was give me a mad reading some times up some times down with no app causing battery drian

Hello,
I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if you managed to know what was the problem? If so, how did you solve it?
I'm experiencing something similar, but after reading a lot of threads it seems that no one knows what is the problem.
For me it started after deleting the battery stats (I know it doesn't make sense) and reflashing a ROM ( I was using the ROM before without a problem). Oh well, let me know how it went for you.
Cheers.

Galaxy s2 GT i9100 jelly bean screen battery drain

I got my phone Samsung Galaxy s2 GT i9100 updated to jelly bean 4.1.2 through Kies when it popped me for it. But now my battery is draining like hell. I glanced on my battery stats and its just my screen that is eating up the larger chunk. When my phone is kept idle its battery drain is just 1% in an hour (I kept it idle overnight to monitor it). But the moment am on my phone like am doing right now (posting or browsing or on facebook) I can literally see my battery draining 1% every one or two minutes.
I am using just the same settings for display which I had been using for a couple of years on my gingerbread 2.3.5 but never faced such a juice drain there.
I am not rooted and thus not done the battery callibration stuff as I really dont see how deleting batterystats.bin would prevent my screen from eating up my battery. Yet am doing the other type of calibration (physical) just to satisfy myself.
The tragedy above all is that I had bought my phone from UAE but now shifted & residing in India. So samsung has totally disowned me here in India. I really need help guys. Please help me out.
Note: started posting this with 65% battery but now left with just 55% of it. Just imagine my condition with this drain.
Clear Dalvik cache, clear everything (format memory) and start from startup wizard.. it will help.. For doing that do complete backup.. to restart everything go to recovery menu..

It can be seen that your modem is really not working good with your network i would like to recommend that you flash LP8 modem which will be way to much better for good reception and better battery life

Thank you for the reply. But can you guide me with that "clear Dalvik cache" you mentioned.
How much screentime do you get on a full cycle? Don't know what your brightness settings are, but if the screen is very bright, then it's normal it eats battery.
Also JB seems -at least for me, other people think the opposite way- to be less battery friendly than GB or ICS.
Edit: this should be in the Q&A-section, not in the General one. Please report your thread (orange triangle on the right top of your post) to ask if a moderator could move it to the right section.
I have kept it in auto brightness

Before this kies update...I did an odin flashing of two kernels XXLSJ & XWLSD from sammobile. All are having the same issue.
What am not able to understand is why the hell is my screen eating so much of battery when it did not do so on gingerbread.

I downloaded the LP8 modem provided by you. Can you help me with the procedure of flashing it? Its just a 4MB file, isnt it?

How about installing BetterBatteryStats (BBS) app?!
Then record an idle dump of about 4 hours and post it as attachment to BBS thread.
There are some "experts" willing to analyze your stats and giving you advises what to optimize.
Good luck !
Ok I have the app. 4 hr idle dump means? And should I set it on current, unplugged or other? Please guide me so that I can get you the correct screen shot!

Just do a factory reset from the recovery. Also, some jellybean roms are known to have poorer battery life compared to their ics counterparts. So perhaps you could consider flashing a jb rom that has better battery life.
Dude...the rom I am presently on is not at all known for poor battery life (check the screen shots of my firmware) yet my case is making an exception.
Could you please let me know a proper firmware for my phone ( purchased from dubai but now residing in India)

Many people are reporting good battery and screen time with latest neat rom lite. I was scared to root and flash but now glad I did! Previous jb attempt (official leak) was pathetic lol

[Q] Stock 4.1.2 battery life with DS Battery Saver and Greenify

Hello, does anyone can confirm better battery life using DS Battery Saver and Greenify together? I use them both on 4.1.2 on my Galaxy Note 8.0 and i got battery life almost doubled as in screen off state it doesn't even take a 1% !!! Really. As long as it is in sleep mode it rarely take 1% during 24 hrs. Of course i clear memory in task manager as well to be sure all is wiped out.
Still having 2.3.6 on my SGS2 and i can get 7-9 days per single charge (with DS Battery Saver on), but i use it as a phone and occasionally, 2-3 times on wifi to update apps or calendar events (less than 2 minutes) and sometimes browse internet for something quickly via 3g, maybe 5-10 minutes per charge. Little music which takes no more than 3% (means 2-3 hrs) per charge. So my needs are not demanding, and i can achieve usual 6-7 days per charge.
What I want is some Jelly Bean features I'm happy with on my Note 8.0 and mostly I cannot use Greenify on my SGS2.
Correct if I'm wrong, but if almost everyone suffer bigger battery drain on JB, comparing to GB, if I use DS Battery Saver and Greenify will this compensate battery drain and let my SGS2 battery last at least comparably to what I have now?
Using better battery stats what seems to be the main battery loss culprit on your devices?

I don't know, never used it, but as I mentioned, I noticed huge battery life improvement using Greenify, too.
Well, I use DS battery saver on both devices, and I guess it is mainly DS Battery Saver thing to preserve battery on Note 8, but using it on SGS2 doest make as good work as on Note 8.
Maybe it is a cause of 2G/3G module I don't have on Note 8. Writing it I'm almost sure it is the thing! While Note 8 cannot be use as phone it doesnt search for a phone signal and this may drain battery during Deep Sleep mode. And Greenify probably won't do that much here. Right?

I can't. I'm on GB, need to have JB to install it, and this is my first question, if both apps will be able to compensate massive JB battery drain people were talking about? I want at least 5-6 days in my usage.

There is a lot to do to try JB (root, cwm, all apps and stuff) to get one app to try and then revert to GB again.... that's why I post it

I don't want to use your thread as debate session but why would you not want to root and custom recovery?[emoji53] I can most assuredly tell you that your loss / battery drain is do to bloatware and old firmware that can be upgraded and debloted to give you better performance and maximize the device.. Just a thought to consider no worries. [emoji16]

Got it rooed, bloarware removed, just have stuff i badly need. Seems all fine on GB right now, but there is something what drains battery 3 to 5% per night in deep sleep, almost no wakelocks (except for DS Battery Saver ones). But I wonder if it is caused by 2g/3g module comparing to no2g/3g module on my Note 8? Maybe if SGS2 doesn't have this module my battery drain will be 0% during night as it is on Note 8, hahah? Is there a way to disable it on SGS2, because airplane mode doesn't make it?

I would install the program I listed and check out the stats under partial waklocks and kernel wakelocks. Just so I understand how long are you getting on the S2?? Let's just focus on that. It is regular i9100, carrier Play (Poland). And you misunderstood... I am happy, but I want to switch to JB to get some unique features and this why I asked if those two aforementioned apps I use on my Note8 do the job and prevent massive battery drain on JB people are talking about.

Gotcha. I used to have Gs2 and I rooted it at the time I only knew of cwm. But I soon left GB and plunged into jb with both feet. Didn't regret it one bit. Once you leave as you know coming back if your not happy can take some doing. I would do my homework on my device and know every little nook and cranny. And I would download either a flashable stock ROM or Odin flashable stock 2.3.6 prior have it secured on ext sd so you can revert if your not happy. I myself use twrp but I'm on the note2 so its a bit different. I think there is a version of twrp on xda for your device can't remember if there's angi kernel that's compatible with GS2 but its worth checking into. And my last peice of advice is in flashing. Always do a full wipe internal as well dalvik etc. And give the device a settle in period. Clean master is a great tool. Its on playstore . also don't know if you ever heard of xposed but its also really great I think its compatible check it out as well. It all takes some doing but in the end I think you'll be happy.[emoji16][emoji106]

Did same things on mine, I think we are on the same level, althou I'm not into custom roms. Well, I did a nand backup via cwm and stock recovery, just to be sure, so I can revert back to what I have now, with every little detail, right? So did you update your S2 to JB and no complaints on battery drain?
Using clean master too! And I use Xposed but on Note 8. What for to use it on S2?

You have to download a stock 2.3.6 GB that can be used in Odin on your PC If you want to revert Jb is a different file table [emoji53] Your GB restore will not restore from from jb you can find a stock GB from sammobile.com or on xda you need to read up on this stuff before you flash away. Look in the forum what's 100% compatible? What are other users experiencing? Xposed has tons and tons of framework that can be used but you gotta read read read. And you really need to read about flashing and file types and what's 100 compatible with your specific carrier and model.. [emoji106][emoji16]

The file types have to match.

So I Odin my stock firmware, install CWM and then restore backup via CWM. Isn't Nand Backup a sort of partition image? That way it should be restored no matter what firmware you're on, as It should clear entire memory and replace it with your backup. That's how it works on PC
