Galaxy s2 GT i9100 jelly bean screen battery drain - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got my phone Samsung Galaxy s2 GT i9100 updated to jelly bean 4.1.2 through Kies when it popped me for it. But now my battery is draining like hell. I glanced on my battery stats and its just my screen that is eating up the larger chunk. When my phone is kept idle its battery drain is just 1% in an hour (I kept it idle overnight to monitor it). But the moment am on my phone like am doing right now (posting or browsing or on facebook) I can literally see my battery draining 1% every one or two minutes.
I am using just the same settings for display which I had been using for a couple of years on my gingerbread 2.3.5 but never faced such a juice drain there.
I am not rooted and thus not done the battery callibration stuff as I really dont see how deleting batterystats.bin would prevent my screen from eating up my battery. Yet am doing the other type of calibration (physical) just to satisfy myself.
The tragedy above all is that I had bought my phone from UAE but now shifted & residing in India. So samsung has totally disowned me here in India. I really need help guys. Please help me out.
Note: started posting this with 65% battery but now left with just 55% of it. Just imagine my condition with this drain.

Clear Dalvik cache, clear everything (format memory) and start from startup wizard.. it will help.. For doing that do complete backup.. to restart everything go to recovery menu..

It can be seen that your modem is really not working good with your network i would like to recommend that you flash LP8 modem which will be way to much better for good reception and better battery life

Thank you for the reply. But can you guide me with that "clear Dalvik cache" you mentioned.

How much screentime do you get on a full cycle? Don't know what your brightness settings are, but if the screen is very bright, then it's normal it eats battery.
Also JB seems -at least for me, other people think the opposite way- to be less battery friendly than GB or ICS.
Edit: this should be in the Q&A-section, not in the General one. Please report your thread (orange triangle on the right top of your post) to ask if a moderator could move it to the right section.

I have kept it in auto brightness

Before this kies update...I did an odin flashing of two kernels XXLSJ & XWLSD from sammobile. All are having the same issue.
What am not able to understand is why the hell is my screen eating so much of battery when it did not do so on gingerbread.

How about installing BetterBatteryStats (BBS) app?!
Then record an idle dump of about 4 hours and post it as attachment to BBS thread.
There are some "experts" willing to analyze your stats and giving you advises what to optimize.
Good luck !

Ok I have the app. 4 hr idle dump means? And should I set it on current, unplugged or other? Please guide me so that I can get you the correct screen shot!

Just do a factory reset from the recovery. Also, some jellybean roms are known to have poorer battery life compared to their ics counterparts. So perhaps you could consider flashing a jb rom that has better battery life.

Dude...the rom I am presently on is not at all known for poor battery life (check the screen shots of my firmware) yet my case is making an exception.
Could you please let me know a proper firmware for my phone ( purchased from dubai but now residing in India)

Many people are reporting good battery and screen time with latest neat rom lite. I was scared to root and flash but now glad I did! Previous jb attempt (official leak) was pathetic lol

[Q] Constant Battery drain

Hey there,
Atm im on resurrection ics (27.05).
Im experiencing a constant battery drain in standby (about 50 mAh). I have already tried different kernels but this did not solve the problem. I did install betterbatterystats to analyse the drain but i dont get whats causing the drain. What stands out is that the android os in the stock battery analysis consumes alot of battery (im not sure if this is as it should be).
Here are some screens, i hope someone can help me..

It looks perfectly normal. Just seems that you restarted your phone twice.
Try to reflash the rom with a full wipe(data, cache, dalvik and system) and install your apps one by one to see if some of them are causing the drain.. if you can't find the solution in this way, try changing rom/kernel.. if you don't solve with this neither, make a backup of your sdcard(s) and reflash with a full wipe.

dont see what the issue is, your battery is hardly dropping anything when in standby.

Battery draining faster with ICS update

I just upgraded my SGS2 to ICS, since that the battery of my phone draining hell lot quicker than earlier. Earlier it use to go down by 1-2 % in the night (when m sleeping) but after update it go down by 11-12%
actually the battery performance should be better, right?

Hi,
I have same feeling. After a week on Slim Ics I can say that with GB my battery life was better. By 10pm everyday I was having left about 40-45% with GB , but with ICS the best I can get is :confuse 30% , mostly about 25% left and I'm having same kind of usage. It's true that with ICS it seems smoother and more responsive .

A fair price to pay.
There are a lot of threads on thus subject if you have a search of the forums.
I had the same issue on upgrading from GB but after following advice and doing some investigation and troubleshooting of rogue apps I now have much better battery life on ics than I ever got on GB.
Read the forums and follow the advice, track down the culprits and you too will reap the benefits

There are LOTS of threads on the subject. Use the search box at the top of the page to look for "battery ics sgs2" or similar and you will turn up pages of information.
The sad thing is the best piece of advice I found was that no two people will have exactly the same solution. You need to identify what is eating your battery using a tool like "Better Battery Stats" or "Go Power Manager". You then need to decide how important the culprits are and remove them or look for updates.
Titanium Backup is useful as it allows you to freeze apps so you can see if they make a difference. It helps if you are rooted as I found several stock apps at the core of my issues. You can't freeze them unless you are rooted.
Siyah Kernel is also very useful, it seems to manage power better than stock. I also found that a factory reset, clearing user data and clearing all of my caches (including Dalvik) helped enormously. It is time consuming to re-install all of your apps from scratch but it does seem to make a huge difference. It looks like some apps retain data from GB that caused issues in ICS.
I found that exchange services were using a huge amount of juice before I cleared all data and caches. That seems to stop completely after the big clear out!
The main thing is no two people seem to have exactly the same problem. It is important therefore that you take a problem solving approach, change one thing at a time and wait long enough to see if it works.
There's your bone, go chew!

Same old, same old.... These are the same tricks that work with EVERY ROM upgrade.... If u get a better battery life outta ICS than u did with GB, u really screwed up installing GB...

i usually get 2 days of battery life on ics 4.0.3....
First of all, you need to be clear whether you upgraded from stock GB to Stock ICS, or a Custom GB ROM to a Custom ICS ROM, since the Custom ROMs do offer better battery life over the stock version.
People here are giving great advice regarding the use of Titanium to freeze any apps that you are not using, e.g. Google+, Samsung bloatware, etc... - this will save the average RAM, hence the battery life. Also, do use Task Manager often (especially before going to sleep) to kill all the background apps.
I installed many Custom ROMs and now running Resurrection v2.1 and very happy with battery life. You must be realistic with expectations - read this http://blog.gsmarena.com/our-samsun...e-test-is-complete-check-out-how-it-did-test/
Overall, if you will do a clean install (format everything - internal/external/MMC and clear cache/Dalvik/battery stats) of Resurrection ICS v2.1 or Litening v3.2, then you should see even an increase in battery life!
Hope it helps and happy flashing ;]]

Could be your battery, maybe is damaged.
Check it, if it is a little big and isnt flat is maybe damage and you need one new.

try flashing a diff kernel (may be Dorimanx v7.22) and then see for the issue
Hi, sorry for breaking in into other people's thread, but I've been getting terrible battery life and random crashes. I tried severeal different rom/kernel/baseband/android versions combinations and always had the phone dying on me. The weird part was that it only happened when the phone was not plugged in. When it was charging, this problem would not happen at all.
Well, after your post about the battery damage I checked mine and it indeed seems a little bigger than normal. Do you think its possible that a damaged battery could cause it?

try with another Battery(a healthy one) may be one from ur friends phone(S2) and see for the issue, if its not there then its a confirmed hardware issue and time for a batt replacement

Amazed the more experienced members who have replied to this thread thus far have missed the obvious & not suggested the OP install BetterBatteryStats. Something weird is causing that drain, I'm not understanding why you'd suggest someone go out & buy a new battery in the first instance when there's nothing outwardly physically wrong with the battery.
OP - Install BetterBatteryStats, have a look at the thread on here to get an idea of what kind of info/screenshots you need to post to that thread for someone there to help you out. Then do exactly that.

YW I'm not saying you'll definitely be able to track down what's causing the drain with BBS, but it's certainly worth a try before you fork out $ for a new battery (especially given your phone is still usable in the meantime). If you end up not being able to find anything with BBS, then you go buy a new battery.
I repalced my battery after one yeat
But I can say tham I am heavy user
The reson I replaced it it was give me a mad reading some times up some times down with no app causing battery drian
Tell my phone begin to shut down when using any app want cpu higher frequencies

And dont let him get down 40

Hello,
I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if you managed to know what was the problem? If so, how did you solve it?
I'm experiencing something similar, but after reading a lot of threads it seems that no one knows what is the problem.
For me it started after deleting the battery stats (I know it doesn't make sense) and reflashing a ROM ( I was using the ROM before without a problem). Oh well, let me know how it went for you.
Cheers.

Battery Issue

Hi guys. HTC One user here, however my sister has an S3 but the battery drains on it REALLY quickly. Like it dropped 8% in the 5-10 mins I was messing about with it.
It was running on out-the-box rom and kernel, so I flashed through Odin, full wiped and installed Omega ROM hoping it was just a ROM issue... however it still seems to be draining really ****ing fast.
Does anyone have any other suggestions before I go ahead and order a new battery (just in case it's not that?!)

(1) Post questions in Q&A section
(2) Are you rooted? If so try BetterBatteryStats (BBS) to isolate the aspect of the phone draining the battery. After a few days running BBS post screenshots if you need help.
Wakelock detector same thing as battery stats only it's free.
Also if you have root you can use greenify, startup manager (free), change kernel or rom (or both if rom supports other kernels).

GS3 4.3 Short Battery Life!

Hi guys i recently re upgraded from Android 4.1.2 to 4.3 and flashed the latest firmvare I9300XXUGND3 but had few problem with ram usage and battery life.
Ram solved using Developer Options>Limit background proceses>At most 4 proceses but I'm still left with with the BATTERY problem.
When I was using 4.1.2 when I left the phone fully charged over night it discharged just 3-4% of battery now for the same period of stand by time it lost 12% of battery. The same problem even when using the phone for like 30minutes with 4.1.2 it dicharged 1-3% now 6-8%.
I searched the internet alot but with no answer. Can you guys help me if you found any solution or it is just the way the phone works on 4.3.

I apologise one more and ask for understanding and please you dont have to be mean if can not help.
Thanks!
Let the firmware settle down for 3-4 days. If problem still persists flash again and do a factory reset. Back your data before factory reset.
Also you can always use batter battery stats app to find out the battery drain.
Is your Battery drain in standby or while using the device? how long is your screen on time?

Over night the battery discharged 3% with 4.1.2 and 12% with 4.3. And while using 4.3 uses much more battery!
I could start the day at 9A.M and still have 15% at midnight but with 4.3 I have to charge at 8:00P.M
4.3 likes more battery than 4.1.2. I don't complain memory management. Ok, it uses lot ram, but i don't face any lag or redraws etc. while multi tasking.
Try AOSP roms and you have 200-300mb free ram all the time.
Two words. Boeffla Kernel ..
Had the same problem when i was still using stock rom in my S3. Wait for a few days.. The short battery i had was gone after a few days. If not then factory reset. Now im using Omnirom no issues at all. Great battery life too.
