Battery issue after JB update - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I`ve bought international sgs3 some weeks ago with ICS, after using it some time, I decided update OS to JellyBean. After this I noticed that battery is discharging much faster than with ICS. Maybe there is a way to fix it?
Thanks for the answer,

same issue noticed here, try to disable google now no significant improvement observed!

No issues here after upgrade

No problems....

I've suffered from rubbish battery life since JB as well. Tried all sorts of different ROMs, tried trouble shooting using Better Battery Stats, and it's still not acceptable. I'm thinking about going to another phone, because i don't have the time to keep trying to sort it out.

Not the kernel - do the right thing and investigate what is causing it.
Then report in an informed manner.

Battery draining faster with ICS update

I just upgraded my SGS2 to ICS, since that the battery of my phone draining hell lot quicker than earlier. Earlier it use to go down by 1-2 % in the night (when m sleeping) but after update it go down by 11-12%
actually the battery performance should be better, right?

Hi,
I have same feeling. After a week on Slim Ics I can say that with GB my battery life was better. By 10pm everyday I was having left about 40-45% with GB , but with ICS the best I can get is :confuse 30% , mostly about 25% left and I'm having same kind of usage. It's true that with ICS it seems smoother and more responsive .

A fair price to pay.
There are a lot of threads on thus subject if you have a search of the forums.
I had the same issue on upgrading from GB but after following advice and doing some investigation and troubleshooting of rogue apps I now have much better battery life on ics than I ever got on GB.
Read the forums and follow the advice, track down the culprits and you too will reap the benefits

There are LOTS of threads on the subject. Use the search box at the top of the page to look for "battery ics sgs2" or similar and you will turn up pages of information.
The sad thing is the best piece of advice I found was that no two people will have exactly the same solution. You need to identify what is eating your battery using a tool like "Better Battery Stats" or "Go Power Manager". You then need to decide how important the culprits are and remove them or look for updates.
Titanium Backup is useful as it allows you to freeze apps so you can see if they make a difference. It helps if you are rooted as I found several stock apps at the core of my issues. You can't freeze them unless you are rooted.
Siyah Kernel is also very useful, it seems to manage power better than stock. I also found that a factory reset, clearing user data and clearing all of my caches (including Dalvik) helped enormously. It is time consuming to re-install all of your apps from scratch but it does seem to make a huge difference. It looks like some apps retain data from GB that caused issues in ICS.
I found that exchange services were using a huge amount of juice before I cleared all data and caches. That seems to stop completely after the big clear out!
The main thing is no two people seem to have exactly the same problem. It is important therefore that you take a problem solving approach, change one thing at a time and wait long enough to see if it works.
There's your bone, go chew!

Same old, same old.... These are the same tricks that work with EVERY ROM upgrade.... If u get a better battery life outta ICS than u did with GB, u really screwed up installing GB...

i usually get 2 days of battery life on ics 4.0.3....
First of all, you need to be clear whether you upgraded from stock GB to Stock ICS, or a Custom GB ROM to a Custom ICS ROM, since the Custom ROMs do offer better battery life over the stock version.
People here are giving great advice regarding the use of Titanium to freeze any apps that you are not using, e.g. Google+, Samsung bloatware, etc... - this will save the average RAM, hence the battery life. Also, do use Task Manager often (especially before going to sleep) to kill all the background apps.
I installed many Custom ROMs and now running Resurrection v2.1 and very happy with battery life. You must be realistic with expectations - read this http://blog.gsmarena.com/our-samsun...e-test-is-complete-check-out-how-it-did-test/
Overall, if you will do a clean install (format everything - internal/external/MMC and clear cache/Dalvik/battery stats) of Resurrection ICS v2.1 or Litening v3.2, then you should see even an increase in battery life!
Hope it helps and happy flashing ;]]

Could be your battery, maybe is damaged.
Check it, if it is a little big and isnt flat is maybe damage and you need one new.
Try doing a fully charge, but i think is the battery. It happened to me.

try flashing a diff kernel (may be Dorimanx v7.22) and then see for the issue
Hi, sorry for breaking in into other people's thread, but I've been getting terrible battery life and random crashes. I tried severeal different rom/kernel/baseband/android versions combinations and always had the phone dying on me. The weird part was that it only happened when the phone was not plugged in. When it was charging, this problem would not happen at all.
Well, after your post about the battery damage I checked mine and it indeed seems a little bigger than normal. Do you think its possible that a damaged battery could cause it?

YES, it will ma8
try with another Battery(a healthy one) may be one from ur friends phone(S2) and see for the issue, if its not there then its a confirmed hardware issue and time for a batt replacement
since a fat battery is an indication of it reaching its near end for u

Amazed the more experienced members who have replied to this thread thus far have missed the obvious & not suggested the OP install BetterBatteryStats. Something weird is causing that drain, I'm not understanding why you'd suggest someone go out & buy a new battery in the first instance when there's nothing outwardly physically wrong with the battery.
OP - Install BetterBatteryStats, have a look at the thread on here to get an idea of what kind of info/screenshots you need to post to that thread for someone there to help you out. Then do exactly that.

Thanks a lot Sir... Appreciate it... I was actually going to the store rite now to buy a new battery...
Now may be after a few days if I don't find a solution or if my battery is really damaged (can't understand why cause my battery is only 8 months old)
Thank you.

YW I'm not saying you'll definitely be able to track down what's causing the drain with BBS, but it's certainly worth a try before you fork out $ for a new battery (especially given your phone is still usable in the meantime). If you end up not being able to find anything with BBS, then you go buy a new battery.
I repalced my battery after one yeat
But I can say tham I am heavy user
The reson I replaced it it was give me a mad reading some times up some times down with no app causing battery drian
Tell my phone begin to shut down when using any app want cpu higher frequencies
So I get new one cause when keep it on charge and use it nothing occur
I suggest you to get a new battery
And charge it well before use
Then let him drop about 15
Then make full charge
And dont let him get down 40

Hello,
I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if you managed to know what was the problem? If so, how did you solve it?
I'm experiencing something similar, but after reading a lot of threads it seems that no one knows what is the problem.
For me it started after deleting the battery stats (I know it doesn't make sense) and reflashing a ROM ( I was using the ROM before without a problem). Oh well, let me know how it went for you.
Cheers.

Downgrade to ics4.0 from jb4.1.2

1) off line flash KDZ
2) restore a ICS CWM backup

i usually do a factory reset anytime i flash something new. when i search the world wide web it seems that people generally post about having better battery life in ics but i dunno. when i used JB i got better battery life after i nailed down a couple of wakelocks but still no comparison to ics. so now that we know results can vary, seems like a worthy experiment for op.

[Q]S2 Heating Problem?

Hey guys!So let me be short and precise:When I am on wifi/3g my phone heats up and gets to 41º C, but when I play something like Nova 3 or MC4 it gets around 50 ºC.These temperatures are shown in CPU-Z.Once I "managed" to get 56ºC while playing and while it was charging.
The question is, how can I fix this problem?I heard that the modem incompatibility may be the problem, but I am thinking that anything else can cause this heating problem.Oh, and I forgot to say, the battery is getting empty pretty fast.I am on custom rom with the last version of siyah kernel.

Screen not as responsive anymore?

Okay, well, for a while I was trying to get bootloader unlocked on p769, and couldnt figure it out.. and had the wonky touch screen and what not.. so I had to use cwm restore, and flash radio/touch fix .. and im currently on v10g ICS.. but something is weird.. ive noticed my screen is less responsive.. like I have to click things multiple times, or push harder then usual.. is this abnormal to happen after what i've done? or am I just crazy and its not really as unresponsive as it seems?(which I swear it is.. its weird)

It's the KDZ you have. ICS is no where near as smooth as JB. The reason being that JB has Project Butter, and the ICS ROM for our phone was poorly designed/handled/released.
If you flash up to JB again, you'll have that buttery goodness once again ^-^

He was still on the European rom. I gave him my flashable u-boot fix combined with lelus touch screen fix & my cwm backup.

Flashing with R&D tool comes with risk. You can get a security error, won't operate, or crash while flashing. Having & using cwm is the safety route IMO.
Plus using the offline flash probably won't fix the inverted u-boot (LG logo).

I would still recommend the LG tools for anybody that is desperate about fixing their phone. It helped me out a great deal. Actually offline flash helped my LG logo and mirrored screen. After that all I had to do was flash the touch fix.

Im sorry, I was at work.. didn't really have much time to explain how I got it fixed or who helped.. but yes, thanks Kuma for the help. I appreciate it.
But there wasn't really anything wrong with the phone.. I tried to unlock the bootloader.. flashed the kdz, did all the shenanigans, but couldn't get it to unlock, and I was stuck with the wonky touch screen on the kdz i was using. So all I really could do is flash radio.zip and touch fix, and then do a restore of a backup I found on this forum using cwm, which Kuma helped me do.
Now im on v10g ICS, and the battery life so far is amazing.. I just am having a really hard time not letting this touch screen stuff bother me. Sometimes its so unresponsive.. I wouldn't mind going back to JB, but I wanna keep this battery life. Im just having a hard time believing there's this much of a difference between ICS and JB.. my phone normally would only last 12 hours, then i'd have to charge it again.. Now, its been off the charger for almost 12 hours and its not even at 60% .. so do you guys really think if I went back to JB, and uninstalled the same bloatware I uninstalled now, the battery would be significantly worse?

Try it out. If you're not happy with it go back to ics. You will never know unless you try it for yourself.

Trial & error
You are the best judge
Jellybean isn't that bad IMO, but I'm already due for a new battery. My phone is already a year old. Something to remember about Jellybean, the default settings for wifi(if turned on) , is to stay on when the phone is a sleep. However you can change it.
To improve responsiveness on ice you need to tweak the build.prop. I can't think of the tweak right now. Anyways I used android tuner app to fix it and I never had problems again. However, the app has updated and changed since. Some of the free tweaks aren't free anymore. I'll try to find the code you need.
Oh and thanks for giving me my props

Yeah idk.. I just know when I had stock rom from metropcs, my battery life would last maybe 12 hours of decent use.. now its lasting probably close to 24 hours without having to charge it. But if you could help me possible fix the responsiveness would be nice.
Also, I asked in another thread, which I dont think anyone knows the real answer, even after searching for it I couldnt find it.. but since im on 10g ICS, it keeps popping up and telling me to upgrade to JB.. is there anyway to remove the update notifications? I've read a few sites.. they mostly just say to freeze 2 things using root, and I tried that.. didn't seem to work. Just sucks, cause everytime I unlock my screen, it tells me to install it

I can't help you with the constant update nagging. There are a couple of threads on the subject, but they never lasted. However, I haven't tried them all, There's another option besides messing with those two apps but I can't remember.
To fix responsiveness add these tweaks to the build.prop
# Increases touch responsiveness
debug.performance.tuning=1
# Increases touch & video something lol
video.accelerate.hw=1
# Increases scrolling responsiveness
windowsmgr.max_events_per_sec=150
