Why do developers develop their custom roms?
From what I understand, these custom builds take a lot of work in development time, and also in software support through threads on forums such as xda. All of the roms I have tried are always free, with the opportunity of providing a small donation.
My question is - what is the incentive for these people, who are obviously talented and educated people, to do this on what seems to be their own time?
Is it solely for fun? For bragging rights? For experience? What do you do for a living? How did you learn how to develop android?
The reason I am posting this here, rather than just taking to Google, is that I think it would be interesting to hear personally from some people on this board. Big time devs or people that just dabble, what makes you do this? Any insight would be appreciated. I just want to hear what some of you have to say. Please feel free to provide as little or as much information as you feel comfortable.

I'm pretty sure it starts as a hobby.
Some devs do it for donations (rare)
Some devs just make custom roms because they wanted to do it for themselves (more likely)
Some devs form teams and work in source code because they have an idea of how they want the OS to look, and they have the ability to make those changes (likely)
Some devs keep doing it because of their reputation (less likely)
Some devs....
For me, it's just for fun. There is nothing particularly unique about anything I've done, but I wanted to learn how things are put together, and I had a lot of fun doing it. The fact that people enjoy using the stuff I've made is just a bonus.

You did a great job with countershrike, loved it on the rez:good:
Thank goodness for them. I can't imagine they do it for the donations, I'm sorry. Those that receive several work a ton on the rom and it's still such a small percentage of users. When you figure the time involved, you don't do it to get rich.

Lol!
I know in the early days it was done just to do it... for the fun and challenge of pushing the boundaries. There were few devs back then compared to now... and only one device.
It was a much friendlier time overall too. There was a little drama with a dev or two though... CM's receival of a C&D letter from Google was an interesting time.
Now the motivations of devs is as varied as the number of devs out there.
This is all awesome, but I'm also interested in what you guys do when you're not developing for these communities. Were you already into software and this is just a hobby as a logical extension of your job?

I'm a software developer by profession, but it's almost entirely Oracle database development and not directly applicable to this. I'm a tinkerer and just like to take things apart to see how they work. My Rezound kernel project began entirely because I wanted to get a better grasp on kernel internals, and my proudest moment in that project was being the first person to port the ROW scheduler to the Rezound. My first ROM was an answer to the major instabilities of ICS AOKP on the Rezound...a lot of people wanted AOKP, but couldn't run it because of the hotboot issues, so I tried to pack as many of the AOKP style features as I could onto a CM9 base without destabilizing it. I wish I could say it made decent donations, but I've given more in a single donation to a single developer that I've ever received combined, but I'm not really upset about that. TBH, the only reason I put a donation link up in the first place is because someone asked me to. It still surprises me every time I actually get one, and it still surprises me when someone calls me a dev...I don't feel like one.
XDAs site has had some great mini features about this very thing with interviews with devs asking the same question. I think you would find them interesting. I'm mobile so I can't link but just explore the main page or features.
I heard they do it to get the chicks!

I do it because I want my phone to run a certain way and don't like hoping/begging others do it for me.. I also do it for the fun and learning experience.. Pretty simple really.. Also this is not just a question for Android developers but can be asked of any Open Source developer.

You could download the android SDK, eclipse and learn some by just downloading their ROMs and looking around. I think the best answer is going to come from one of them, but learning Java and playing should be a good start.
I don't really think the no homo at the end was necessary.

For what it's worth, when I was 13 I was poking around in the terminal on my desktop and writing calculator programs in basic (following tutorials of course), and I'm by no means smart. Never under-estimate whiz kids. I'm sure you had that nerdy kid in your neighborhood who was building robots in elementary school and winning the science fair every year.

I'm by no means an expert with android work, but I've learned by reading ,by tinkering, and asking. I'm personally better with C, C++, & C#, but I can do a bit of java and html. Just start reading, you cant hack a system if u don't know it inside and out. Learn everything you can about android, linux, arm, qualcomm, cell technology, etc. just start absorbing any info u can get ur hands on regarding the systems & hardware Hope that gives u a place to start =)

Keep interested! If you really like this stuff, you won't be able to stop yourself from learning more. Try out some Linux distributions, read up on programming languages (I recommend python and it's java-fied version jython,) and just read whatever interests you.
If you're interested in making themes, get yourself a copy of Photoshop (doesn't have to be CS5) or if you don't feel like breaking all kinds of copy right, get The GIMP. There's a a whole lot of tutorials out there for every kind of effect you'd want to achieve with an image. There's also a lot of tutorials on xda for people looking to get into theming.

You guys have a better head start than I did - just google the computers I started with when I was 13 in 1984!
Not many devs can do 100% of this. It takes a team and asking for help.
I was going to ask the same original question!
I am in CS 1400, its my first "major" specific class outside Math.
It is for a Computer Science Degree which I will probably emphasize in Game Engineering.
This first class lasts two semester's covering the same book:
Deitels "Java: How To Program (9th)".
I assume these classes and books are going to be my best bet on getting into the hardware hacking and learning this kind of stuff?
I wouldn't mind other suggestions, I mean most the stuff I already know is from messing around and learning from experience!
hell I'm 41 with a GED and I'm lucky if I can remember how to use the microwave let alone develop a rom

You know, normally I don't have a problem with threads, but you've just come in here saying "I got wiimote working, cool, lulz" and stuff, but have provided no information.
If you have wiimote working on an AOSP rom, you're quite late to the party. However, if you have it working on a Sense based rom, you should inform people how you did it, rather than just saying you have it working. People aren't flaming you for the thread in general, they're flaming you for the lack of information.
He has had multiple threads deleted because of lack of anything with substance. He will get the picture eventually.

I see no problem with bounties. He's just asking for something to be done for more then just a click on the thanks button.
I do think the "bounty" idea does not help community based development, at the same time this is something I would like to see developed.
Given that developers are working hard on nightlys for CM9 on many devices I can understand that this is not a priority and at the end of the day all these projects a community based.
I imagine most CM developers are committed to the project for each other rather than "customers" like me and the original poster, their goal is to improve their coding and help the community.
That said a dedicated wishlist forum with +1 style buttons in xda or cyanogen might be nice to gauge community interest.
Meh, I want MHL suport in CM so bad that I stoped using CM since march 2012.
I see nothing wrong with the op's bounty.
Time is passing and there isn't still no reply from HTC, even if a lot of us ask about. This delay of realization of such an important thing unables us to get unstock kernel with oc and optimizations. Without sources devs have to work hard and there is no sucess to get stable and with fully working camera cm9, aokp, aosp and other ROMs.
My idea is to force HTC to hurry up this process. We can create a petition and spam HTC 's FB, Twitter, mail and in other ways.
We need volunteer, who can create the petition (everyone will sign it) and ideas of content of messenge, that all of us will send to HTC.
We can't let them to fool us!
Peace.

Better yet. why don't you buy a gun and make it happen? hahahha. the only way to force something is with death and violence. Do some research in your history. Making a fake petition won't get you anywhere. They'll just laugh at you. HTC has got too big. They no longer care about their customers. I'd care less if the source got released.

Seriously, I think don't you can "Force" HTC to release anything. They will release the kernel source when they are ready to. They have a business to run and we can't interfere in any of their of affairs. A petition would be meaningless.

If you want a petition, make one. So sick of what xda has devolved to.

Really? A post like this is a perfect example of what you are claiming as to what XDA has "devolved to"....
OP, while a petition is certainly not gonna work, I would like to apologize for the ignorant, trollish replies from some of the imbeciles in your thread.
I remember we were doing this for the gb source for the 3d when it first came out get it op

I wonder why zero tolerance threads are "unacceptable" because they are irrelevant, but meaningless troll posts are ok. Seems like this forum needs a revamp.

My idea is to force HTC to hurry up this process. We can create a petition and spam HTC 's FB, Twitter, mail and in other ways.

Let's aggressively attack their mailboxes... Which will be added to a junk list... THAT'LL do the trick... Certainly!. And ALL your stuff will be automatically ignored. Not only will that make this look evenmoreso of a worse community, HTC will see devs as a joke, and do what they can to hold off on releasing until they absolutely HAVE to. Why the hell do i even check XDA forums anymore. shoulda learned, i say that every month... oh well. Eventually.
Why is AOSP support lacking so bad with these newer evo's? Are we ever going to get a fully functional AOSP rom?

It's not lacking. We have multiple Devs working on aosp jelly bean.
Sit back and enjoy the ride. Also, this belongs in q and a where all the other Omg where is aosp threads reside.

We've had wayyyy too many thread complaining about AOSP lately.
Why is it hard to search the forums before making a thread? Are we ever going to get a consolidated thread about a specific topic?
Copy-cating aside, it really would be useful to have one thread for this so people that really want AOSP can discuss it to death there. Seriously a quick search yielded these results:
AOSP on EVO LTE?
Is there an AOSP rom out yet?
Why no AOSP/AOKP ?
We're a friendly bunch of people and will help anyone with any question/issue. Just search before making a post or we'll lose our sanity
Also, our devs are making awesome progress with AOSP. You can get a CM9 build here and even a bootable build of CM10 if you join the IRC channel. I want this as much as everyone else but we are not entitled to it, the devs don't owe us anything. Join an existing thread to discuss this but don't be so demanding about it. :good:
Firstly, we've only had source code for what, 2 weeks? maybe 3? What in the hell you do want? Secondly deck has release a few versions of his CM10 port including a newer build just an hour or so again on IRC. I'm running it right now, and so far his progress is a hell of alot better than alot of other even official alphas right now.
I have always ran sense roms on my phones, but am interested in pure android experience. With the release of source, can we expect working LTE and camera?

Man yall are so angry by nature... I was pertaining this to official support... Everything seems to be done unofficially by a small handful of very good devs and i was just wondering why can't the Evo line get any official support anymore?

+1 for a consolidated thread. It should be sticky near the top too. This is a very popular topic and the the #1 reason I come to check the forums.
The day I say goodbye to Sense will be a good day, indeed.

I don't think any handset in the EVO line ever had AOSP supported officially. It's always been SENSE on top of android. If you ever wanted AOSP on anything besides a NEXUS device, it's unofficial.
Cleanrom DE is not bad.. I know its not full

He probably means official CM.
Don't forget to twitter, email or message HTC to get them to live up to their obligations and comply with GPL.

We aren't angry by nature, we just dislike repeat threads every single day. Do you not realize your question has been asked dozens of times with the same answer every time?
Patience. Learn the word. The phone hasn't been available long. People are still slowly flowing in. We need someone from CM to support our device. Decks CM10 is already pretty damn stable.
What you need to do is calm down and read the forums before posting a thread, because if you're going to make the same thread we've all see ten times in the past week, and then complain when we get angry, then you aren't going to be very well liked around here.

Can we create an official "***** and Moan" forum and/or thread and "quarantine" certain XDA users to it?
