You could download the android SDK, eclipse and learn some by just downloading their ROMs and looking around. I think the best answer is going to come from one of them, but learning Java and playing should be a good start.
I don't really think the no homo at the end was necessary.

I don't think your post is either.
@OP
As s15 said download sdk.
download some roms from here and get familiar with whats what.
some of the newbie roms out are nothing but a popular rom with theme and custom applications.
Learn java as well.

13!?!?!?!?! Why would you expose your age on the internet with a bunch of strangers....have you even rooted? Do you even know how to set up adb? Is this your first android phone? Good luck if your gonna try but just follow development for awhile and learn from trial and error not that I'm a developer but that's what I would do.

For what it's worth, when I was 13 I was poking around in the terminal on my desktop and writing calculator programs in basic (following tutorials of course), and I'm by no means smart. Never under-estimate whiz kids. I'm sure you had that nerdy kid in your neighborhood who was building robots in elementary school and winning the science fair every year.

Yeah I'm 16 and I actually would like to learn to at least theme. I'm slowly learning more and more though.

Oh well there's nothing wrong with it, I'm 14. Yeah I'm kinda smart don't get me wrong , I took the ACT when I was 12 ,in gifted classes, in algebra, 1400 something on my Sri, and in all challenge classes. Have had 3 rooted android phones. Set up all the necessary things to root. There's nothing wrong with being young but at least go out hang with friends or work out/ get fit. Rooting is a hobby. I even helped my teacher root I didn't mean it to be offensive my bad.

I'm by no means an expert with android work, but I've learned by reading ,by tinkering, and asking. I'm personally better with C, C++, & C#, but I can do a bit of java and html. Just start reading, you cant hack a system if u don't know it inside and out. Learn everything you can about android, linux, arm, qualcomm, cell technology, etc. just start absorbing any info u can get ur hands on regarding the systems & hardware Hope that gives u a place to start =)

Keep interested! If you really like this stuff, you won't be able to stop yourself from learning more. Try out some Linux distributions, read up on programming languages (I recommend python and it's java-fied version jython,) and just read whatever interests you.
If you're interested in making themes, get yourself a copy of Photoshop (doesn't have to be CS5) or if you don't feel like breaking all kinds of copy right, get The GIMP. There's a a whole lot of tutorials out there for every kind of effect you'd want to achieve with an image. There's also a lot of tutorials on xda for people looking to get into theming.

You guys have a better head start than I did - just google the computers I started with when I was 13 in 1984!
Not many devs can do 100% of this. It takes a team and asking for help.
I was going to ask the same original question!
I am in CS 1400, its my first "major" specific class outside Math.
It is for a Computer Science Degree which I will probably emphasize in Game Engineering.
This first class lasts two semester's covering the same book:
Deitels "Java: How To Program (9th)".
I assume these classes and books are going to be my best bet on getting into the hardware hacking and learning this kind of stuff?
I wouldn't mind other suggestions, I mean most the stuff I already know is from messing around and learning from experience!
hell I'm 41 with a GED and I'm lucky if I can remember how to use the microwave let alone develop a rom

Your thread-starting skills are second to none.
You guys kill me with the time you take to make lame responses. Grow up damn. You think your immature remarks bother me? It just shows what immature dumbasses you are.
Being the general section ill post whatever the hell i feel like and if you dont like it just move on and dont reply. All people like yall do is continue to run this place into the ground. Maybe after more developers leave and continue to start their own forums the mods will get rid of you people that degrade others and keep up with your pointless stupidity. Damn

I somewhat can't blame them. I mean, you've made a lot of threads lately, most of which contain rather useless info. And the Freeza ones could have been accomplished in a PM. I'm just saying, man. And you're right, this being the general section, we can say whatever the hell we want. And we have been.
U mean u used the e3d as a wiimote?
If so what did u use ...are u on a ROM. Or stock ?
Ulllllllllllltttrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yea I keep forgetting that every topic made on this forum must be about important stuff like starting a thread about jumping ship whenever a new phone is announced, bad sprint customer service, which rom is best etc or you get flamed. Whatever you say. This place is infected with people who act like children

What above brings anything to the community that is even somewhat useful without people coming in asking a bunch of questions? Now, if you would have said that you use got the wiimote working on a sense rom and shared what you did, then that would be worth starting a thread.
Could you imagine if everybody did what you are doing? The general section would be full of absolutely nothing useful at all.

Sounds to me like you fully understand what kinda threads will be flamed for being redundant/retarded. Yes, it is the general section and you can start whatever threads you please, on the flip side, people like myself will be there to say things like "hey, think twice before wasting my screen space with your dumbass threads, you make me move my thumbs too much..."
It's a general forum, so shut up and let him post what ever he wants to post, you like it klick it, enjoy it, if not dont even bother comment!
How did you get wiimote working on sense? Or is this entire thread just informing us you installed an apk on a AOSP rom?

You know, normally I don't have a problem with threads, but you've just come in here saying "I got wiimote working, cool, lulz" and stuff, but have provided no information.
If you have wiimote working on an AOSP rom, you're quite late to the party. However, if you have it working on a Sense based rom, you should inform people how you did it, rather than just saying you have it working. People aren't flaming you for the thread in general, they're flaming you for the lack of information.
He has had multiple threads deleted because of lack of anything with substance. He will get the picture eventually.

If you've seen this video before, then you'll understand what it stands for, for the others? Watch, listen and don't be surprised when you never receive an answer.
This is a development site, a lot of effort is put into creating user friendly guides and tutorials.
In this Specific device forum, we put more effort into gathering all information and troubleshooting about this device here:
The Ultimate Guide to Everything Amaze-ing!(Amaze 4g BIBLE!) Updated Often
If it's absolutely NOT there, then find a thread similar to it and post in there, DO NOT post a new thread for every question, if you have an old thread post it there, if you have multiple questions, post it all in one post and if you have another question that comes to mind after that post, EDIT your post and add it in, DON'T MAKE THREE POST FOR THREE QUESTIONS, WE ARE NOT GOING TO READ, ANSWER, READ, ANSWER AND KEEP REPEATING THE SAME PROCESS WHICH COULD'VE BEEN DONE IN THE FIRST REPLY!
If you're too lazy to search for the answer to your own problem, then don't expect US to do it for you, we KNOW what's available and what isn't, so telling us you can't find it? Just lets us know YOU ARE LAZY.
If you're a total NOOB? I'd advise you to head over to the amaze bible, read, understand, read it again, understand and read AGAIN until you grasp the detail and understand what you're dealing with, if you don't get it? You must be a tad bit slow.
DO NOT bombard dev threads with questions, read their FAQ post, READ IT READ IT READ IT and again READ. Your question has been answered before and if you're the only one having that problem? It's obviously not the devs fault. Found a bug? If it's unique, worth looking at and it wasn't answered before, POST A LOGCAT, we aren't mind readers or magicians!
DO NOT post questions in the general forum! There is a question and answer forum for a reason, I from this day refuse to answer questions posted in the general forum, regular and advanced members should do the same, this practice has to STOP.

You get an answer or any kind of HELP, press the THANKS button, DON'T post "thanks", you're already welcome, but is it really relevant to post a whoooole post just to say "thanks"? really? There's a button for that.
Press thanks on every rom thread you open and download, you don't have any idea the countless hours devs spend creating the ROMs they do JUST FOR YOU to have better experience using YOUR device, though he/she is getting nada for it. Be grateful, press THANKS!
Donate to a dev if you can, a little donation is a very welcome and very much appreciated form of showing a dev their work is loved and appreciated, their countless hours of their own personal time was totally worth it and that you end users think they deserve just a kind token of appreciation for their work. It goes a long way, even if it's a simple 5 bucks, most of them are college/high school students, like many of our devs here, so hit that thanks button and donate if you can, it's very much appreciated.
Do Not PM devs or common regs or MODS unless they say they're okay with getting PM's, have a problem with a post? Then report it, not everyone wants their inbox being blown up with irrelevant questions and things that can be found in a forum, they usually have support threads, use those to let a dev know something, ONLY PM if it is absolutely important like you're-gonna-die-if-this-person-doesn't-help-you important. Got it? The reaction of some people will be VERY NICE for PM's about none sense and YOU cannot feel insulted if you get a rude response, you simply went looking for it.
I shall continue this post as I see things to be added, that is all, now go have fun reading, since that's where we learn all the basics before practice, you read read read, watch youtube videos of someone doing it. (There's a video of everything on youtube), then read read read some more, be sure and confident before attempting something you have no clue about, if you have NO clue about it, then why on earth are you about to do it? Don't be a noob, be a newb that's willing to be the next Recognized Dev/Contributor/Themer/Mod/Admin sometime in the future.
If you don't like what I have to say and think my point of view is somehwat "rude"?

... i swear this will be the way i meet my wife. hahaha

the idiocy would actually fall on you for not picking up the humor/sarcasm from other posts that have been madeand with that being said, i'll just break it down for you...
i WAS in fact making it a joke on the "current state of pop culture" by writing with the vernacular of people who use the term in their everyday vocabulary. the word SWAG is being used in a sense to describe the boost of confidence someone would feel by getting new clothes, a new haircut, car, phone, etc. the sarcasm was played on the approach in which one would hand out their number to a female in style, yet doing it in a geeky way. i wanted to still ask the question because i was curious to know, but thought it was something that was more humorous than serious. i think there would be a higher chance of someone like you (taking things on an internet forum more serious than they should be taken and bashing the person because he either just doesn't get it or just wants to feel superior by trying to correct someone) bashing the op (me) if i were to start a thread saying...
"is it possible to put my phone number on an NFC chip and let girls use their phones to get my contact instead of me doing it the old fashion way with a pen a paper"
so i decided to make it a joke, yet get a real answer.
so if you want to have the last word then go ahead and reply back, but i didn't start this thread to create an argument with someone i don't know over the internet about something that's really almost pointless. I'm not going to reply back and would much rather see this thread be closed/deleted because it's hard to watch something that could put a smirk on someones face be turned into an argument because someone just couldn't get the joke.

I was not offended at all. I just know there are people who think that way, and use that type of language toward women. Just ignorant types, whom will never have a real women. Apology accepted, and I'm glad you were joking. One less male chauvinist in our crew.

I've just been looking up the same thing, I have eclipse installed with a virtual device, its just the code writing I'm stuck with.
But to answer your question, you need the android sdk and eclipse and a virtual device within eclipse. Then you can focus on code writing

You don't need code to download and run eclipse, so I guess that's the easy part done. Can you offer advice??
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
It helps if you have a specific goal in mind. What exactly would you want to do that requires android related coding skills?
If you want to make apps it seems most useful to start with familiarizing yourself with the Java programming language. Usage of the sdk comes after that.

Read. Read absolutely anything you can find!
Learn a language, currently I'm trying to learn a bit of C, the language used to code the Linux kernel.
I also have some books on Java, which is what the os is based on.

Alot of experienced devs on here are up there own arse. They hate noobs. I get that it gets frustrating when we ask questions over and over. They kind of want to be the minority. They feel big. Better than us.
But seriously.. did u guys learn from others atall? Books? Advice? Trial and error? I know u did cos thats life! These are the sort of ppl who push there kids to be what they want em to be and disown them if they fail.
As i said.. everyone starts somewere. I wouldnt not teach my lil boy how to ride a bike bcos he cant do it first time. Be nice to people! And good things will happen.. i aint talkin about just you. Theres alot of hatred for noobs.. being a noob doesnt make us dumb!

Learning how to code takes time but doesn't necessarily have to be difficult. It's like a jigsaw of skills and knowledge. Start small and build your skill set a piece at a time. I suggest you start from the beginning with a good introductory java programming book. Lookup amazon and find one with good reviews. Start with the simple concepts like variables, variable types, arrays, methods, parameter passing, classes, for/while loops, if else statements. Then move onto events and event handlers, creating a simple ui with buttons and text boxes etc etc.
I recommend java because it's a lot easier than starting with something like c since you won't need to worry about memory management and it's a lot higher level. I'd actually recommend c# because imo it's a really great language with much more flexibility than java and much easier to work with but you won't be able to develop for Android using it unless you want to use mono.
Don't expect results overnight. If you're impatient or get easily frustrated then don't even bother. But then again that goes for any endeavour worth working hard for.

Google and Trial+Error. It's the most efficient way since you can keep your goal in mind without having to follow tutorials about stuff you don't care about.
However be prepared to rewrite your code often whenever you learn better stuff
Search for the boston Android tutorials on YouTube . That will give you some basic knowledge in bite size pieces.
Just like everything you learned: start by copying what others do.
Check out the Google development pages. They contain nice tuts too.

You will find most get their knowledge by reading all the faqs and guides .
Being a noob makes nobody dumb .
But refusing to follow XDA rules not searching being to lazy to bother to read wanting it all handed to you on a plate certainly makes you dumb .
Those noobs and non noobs are becoming a bigger part of what is supposed to be a developers forum not a fix my phone forum and that's why their is a backlash against some posters .
Sadly we are not going to get back the forum that XDA once was as its been linked on that many other sites its now treated as just another forum that can fix my phone up .
All said in a nutshell here many years ago .

Why do developers develop their custom roms?
From what I understand, these custom builds take a lot of work in development time, and also in software support through threads on forums such as xda. All of the roms I have tried are always free, with the opportunity of providing a small donation.
My question is - what is the incentive for these people, who are obviously talented and educated people, to do this on what seems to be their own time?
Is it solely for fun? For bragging rights? For experience? What do you do for a living? How did you learn how to develop android?
The reason I am posting this here, rather than just taking to Google, is that I think it would be interesting to hear personally from some people on this board. Big time devs or people that just dabble, what makes you do this? Any insight would be appreciated. I just want to hear what some of you have to say. Please feel free to provide as little or as much information as you feel comfortable.

I'm pretty sure it starts as a hobby.
Some devs do it for donations (rare)
Some devs just make custom roms because they wanted to do it for themselves (more likely)
Some devs form teams and work in source code because they have an idea of how they want the OS to look, and they have the ability to make those changes (likely)
Some devs keep doing it because of their reputation (less likely)
Some devs....
For me, it's just for fun. There is nothing particularly unique about anything I've done, but I wanted to learn how things are put together, and I had a lot of fun doing it. The fact that people enjoy using the stuff I've made is just a bonus.

You did a great job with countershrike, loved it on the rez:good:
Thank goodness for them. I can't imagine they do it for the donations, I'm sorry. Those that receive several work a ton on the rom and it's still such a small percentage of users. When you figure the time involved, you don't do it to get rich.

Lol!
I know in the early days it was done just to do it... for the fun and challenge of pushing the boundaries. There were few devs back then compared to now... and only one device.
It was a much friendlier time overall too. There was a little drama with a dev or two though... CM's receival of a C&D letter from Google was an interesting time.
Now the motivations of devs is as varied as the number of devs out there.
This is all awesome, but I'm also interested in what you guys do when you're not developing for these communities. Were you already into software and this is just a hobby as a logical extension of your job?

I'm a software developer by profession, but it's almost entirely Oracle database development and not directly applicable to this. I'm a tinkerer and just like to take things apart to see how they work. My Rezound kernel project began entirely because I wanted to get a better grasp on kernel internals, and my proudest moment in that project was being the first person to port the ROW scheduler to the Rezound. My first ROM was an answer to the major instabilities of ICS AOKP on the Rezound...a lot of people wanted AOKP, but couldn't run it because of the hotboot issues, so I tried to pack as many of the AOKP style features as I could onto a CM9 base without destabilizing it. I wish I could say it made decent donations, but I've given more in a single donation to a single developer that I've ever received combined, but I'm not really upset about that. TBH, the only reason I put a donation link up in the first place is because someone asked me to. It still surprises me every time I actually get one, and it still surprises me when someone calls me a dev...I don't feel like one.
XDAs site has had some great mini features about this very thing with interviews with devs asking the same question. I think you would find them interesting. I'm mobile so I can't link but just explore the main page or features.
I heard they do it to get the chicks!

It's something to do. Why hide your work?
I do it because I want my phone to run a certain way and don't like hoping/begging others do it for me.. I also do it for the fun and learning experience.. Pretty simple really.. Also this is not just a question for Android developers but can be asked of any Open Source developer.
