I'm am getting the message: "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." on bootup.
I had been working on trying to change my Bell i717 (hardware) with Rogers firmware, as I signed up with Koodo to the Telus firmware. I had been flashing the Telus ICS firmware to un-root my phone. I had just finished flashing with the copy from: sammobile.com
using this thread for help: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1483113&highlight=firmware
I tried to connect from with Kies on two different computers with different cables and neither will Connect. The computers try but I get: "Device not responding. To resolve, the issue, reboot the device." popup box - OK is the only choice. I reboot, and still get the same message.
When I go to Tools - Emergency Firmware Recovery on both laptops, I get the same result: the device does not show up the the box: List of devices requiring emergency recovery.
Next I try Troubleshoot connection error. I get: Connection error troubleshooting process is complete with a check mark. The only option is Complete button.
So the cable checks out. Windows installs the Note's device drivers when connected.
How do I get my device back?

Thanks Kenny.
I found a solution! I bought a jig, but it didn't work.
I figured I would try one more time flashing with Odin. Odin showed that it still communicated with the phone, so I flashed the phone one more time with the Telus ICS i717D firmware from Sammobile.com. I needed to have the RESTART checkbox checked and as soon as the Note restarted I pressed the Volume Up & Down and got the Recovery mode. I wiped my caches and rebooted.
I have a working i717D phone!
One last question, when in Download mode OR when the phone first boots up, I see on either screen i717R (Rogers). On bootup, after stating: Samsung Galaxy Note i717R another screen shows with 4G LTE Telus. In the phone properties, it shows i717D and when connected to my windows PC as well.
How or what file, do I flash my phone to change the ODIN and first screen on bootup to say i717D?
How did you get it to work? I am having a simmilar problem.. ATT i717...

You will need to root your stock ROM and install a file manager to make a switch.

So I have been told my phone had the wrong firmware installed and I am not even sure where to post this any more...
I have US Cellular as a carrier. and I have the Samsung Galaxy S Mesmeris.
I went to install an update and downloaded the update from the Samsung site and followed the instructions to get to the download mode. was installing it when at like 99% i got an error message. SO I tried it again and same thing. So I downloaded Odin but must of been the wrong once because I redownloaded a different odin and it looks way different the second one has more options where as the 1st one I downloaded and used has only 2. 1) being Start and the 2) being Master Clear.
So I was getting the error that showed a pic of a phone - ! Computer so I read that odin could wipe it and get it back to the way it was.
Well now I am getting nothing but a AT&T World phone screen and it wont even let me get back to the download mode.
I tried every combination with holding the volume button down and up and putting battery in and still just get the AT&T when ever I unplug the USB. Nothing more.
Can anyone walk me through the steps to get it back so it is US Cellular and not showing AT&T?
Someone told me I had the wrong firm ware installed and that it was bricked.
Any help would be great!

1. Remove battery.
2. Insert battery.
3. While holding down the volume down button plug into usb. It should go into Download mode.
4. If you got into Download Mode, then it is pretty easy from here on. Go into Odin, you can get it from here http://www.mediafire.com/?429fcpdtpckkcea (Link from Droidstyle guide)
You can get the stock mesmerize rom from USCC from here http://android.clocktowergaming.com/mesmerize/Samsung_i500_Mesmerize_EH09.rar
Click PDA and select the rar file and hit start.
If everything goes well, your back on stock where you can go on your way to flashing roms.

Moving to Q&A
Hi all,
I followed the guide in this forum to the letter, however the firmware flash fails after a few seconds. Now when it powers up, I no longer see the Samsung boot screen, I have this message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies". And I can no longer access the recovery menu by pressing up volume, power & home.
I contacted the previous owner to get some more info, and found out that the phone was originally from another country (UK) and I had attempted to flash it with Australian firmware. Not sure whether this is the cause of the current issue...?
So now I've got the UK firmware, however each time I attempt to flash it, after a few seconds it fails.
In the "Downloading" dialogue on the phone, I can see information against every field: Product name (GT-I9300), Custom Binary (1), Current Binary (Samsung official), and System Status (Official).
Based on this and what I've read here, this is a good sign (ie: software recoverable, and not hardware failure). However I'm stumped on the flashing situation. I've tried Odin 3.07 and 3.04.
Appreciate any advice.
Try the rescue firmware from a sticky in general forum, follow the instructions exactly.

Hello yesterday i tried to install a deodexed stock rom of kitkat, unfortunately, my phone lost data and had to be reset because apps were failing uncontrollably.
After hours of trying to fix it, it is now stuck on the "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies & try again." Now when i go into kies and goto emergency recovery my device doesn't show up, and kies tells me the connected device isn't supported (I've tried the newest keys and the older one).
When i try to install new firmware from keys i try to type the s/n on my battery and it says its incorrect, im guessing someone has replaced the battery in this phone before, so possibly if i can find the serial number then i can update it from kies.
Any help on getting this phone back up and running would be great!!
I have a galaxy s 3 SCH-R530 from US Cellular
serial number of the PHONE is on the PHONE. To see sticker you have to remove battery
The serial number is on the phone, on the sticker under the battery. It should also be on the box the phone came in if you still have it.
Are you sure you can't access download mode, and flash with Odin? When I was on that screen I managed to get it into download mode and flash, and it's much much easier and reliable than Kies recovery.

I can now access download mode but anything i try to flash in fails. I think i need to get the stock rom, and flash it back in to fix my device, although i was able to get it to boot but i had no data or wifi etc.. but now i can only acces the download mode and recovery.
Also i dont have the box nor is the s/n on the phone sticker.
try to flash stock firmware if that doesn't help ,go to general forum and search for rescue firmware and flash it ,if that doesn't help ,i'm afraid you have to go at service .
Default need my s/n

You are in the wrong forum for your device any advice given here can potentially brick your device especially flashing the rescue firmware as suggested above (the rescue firmware in this forum is for the 19300 international)!!
Do not flash anything from this forum or you will brick your device please ask mod to move the thread.
I am fairly certain that my phone can't be recovered, but I want to be sure so I'm asking for a bit of help here.
Phone is a Samsung S2X SGH-T989D, on Koodo (a child of Telus). It was running Android 4.1.2. Unfortunately I can't get into the phone for more details.
I tried to flash a custom recovery using Odin v1.85. It was a CWM recovery md5 file, but I don't have the version number (it wasn't listed in the guide I was using - http://www.theandroidsoul.com/easil...gh-t989-installs-busybox-superuser-app-52203/)
The process seemed to complete normally, but when I restarted the phone I ended up with a "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
Loading Kies (Odin not running) it detect when the phone is connected and tries to read the details from the phone, but after several minutes it complains of a connection error and tells me to reboot the device. This is all I can get Kies to do.
Odin detects the phone normally. I try to restore the stock Telus/Koodo firmware (T989DTLUMC4_T989OYBMC4_T989DTLUMC4_HOME.tar.md5) using Odin v3 or Odin v1.85 and Odin goes through all the steps successfully. After all is done I restart the phone and get the same error message.
"adb.exe devices" at a Windows 7 command prompt does not list any devices.
So this is where I am... I have a physically mint condition Samsung S2X SGH-T989D phone that I cannot get to boot past this error screen.
Is there anything else I can try?
FIXED!
Yay!
I solved my problem... Using Odin3 v1.85 I tried to flash the phone one more time. The only difference is that I left the Auto Reboot checkbox selected. The process went through like every other time except at the end the phone restarted. IT CAME UP LIKE NOTHING WAS WRONG!
So, I didn't lose any data and my phone is working fine now.
Makes me VERY happy. There are TOO MANY PHONES to choose from these days. My head was spinning trying to decide on a replacement phone.
Hope this helps someone in the future!
So I have a S4 i9545 for Verizon. It was on 4.2.2 rooted and I upgraded using Fireflash with I545_OC1_Stock_DeOdexed_ROMwNK4_BL.zip. Everything seemed fine so I was using Titanium back up to remove the bloatware and then my battery died. When I charged it and booted up it got to the Verizon screen and hung there. I reset and tried several more times. I tried to use odin and flash a stock ROM SCH-I545_VZW_1_20140330160240_yni63xq6zh and I also tried one more. Odin gave a an error and failed. I then tried going into the boot loder and flash the I545_OC1_Stock_DeOdexed_ROMwNK4_BL.zip. Not sure if this was foolish or not. When I booted up I got to a black screen and there was a voice talking, maybe some sort of training, but I couldn't do anything.
If anyone can point me in the right direction on how to unbrick my S4 I would appreciate it. I know I screwed up.
Right now when I turn on the phone it says firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again. I tried connected to my computer and opening kies but it doesn't find it.
Try disconnecting your phone, completely closing Kies, then re-launching it with your phone still disconnected. Then click Tools > Firmware Upgrade and Initialization then follow the prompts
