Micro stutters on galaxy 3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my s3 all of a suden started to have micro stutters,i have a custom rom Foxhound 2.3, and when i try a custom kernel it lags as hell. for exemple perseus stutters my phone in app drawer and almost everytime i open an application. Syah 1.8.9. although its better, still have some stutters... the only one that can have the phone more stable is the stock one. I dont really mind having the stock kernel is just that it makes the phone more stable but it still stutters some times when opening apps and in the app drawer. Its weird because in applications i have no problems, and when im playing games is all good to.. even the more heavy intensive. Also my boot and shutdown animation stutter or jitters a little bit.. a thing that dint happened.
Also the benchmarks are good as always +/- 16000 on antutu, no changes... so i dont really understand whats happening...
Is the phone dead? any ideas?

I have had this also. I guess it could be some minor ROM/kernel incompatibility or something like that. Performance was usually good but the tiny little stuttering drove me crazy. Yank555 kernel was a good solution for me, 0 stutter.
I would say that the bundled kernel in any given ROM is probably the most stable with that ROM, but if you want to try a different kernel it's best to flash it right after a clean ROM flash and configure the kernel to be a little bit more on the performance side. I mean if it's configured to save battery it's more likely to make the UI stutter.
At the moment I'm on ReVolt nightly with Yank CM kernel. No lags or stutters. I've tested a few Samsung leak 4.2.1 ROMs also with (obviously) stock kernels, no stutters with them either.
Play around and test different ROMs and kernels, find the best solution for you.

Strange. If it does it with all kernels and ROMs it could be some kind of a hardware problem. I would flash stock ROM through Odin just to be sure... if that won't help I think nothing will.

I'm so tired...

I'm so tired...Since some months I'm looking for a rom with a good battery life and smooth, even in little games like fruit ninja or angry birds...But I havent' found nothing.
I had found some roms like perfectpeso, oxygen, dynamite rom, cyanogenmod, but due to something, I have always uninstalled them and flashed another rom and so on. Now I'm really tired of this, I want a rom which can satisfies me. So far I've tried:
-Perfectpeso: bad battery and some lags
-Oxygen: camera and microphone suck
-Dynamite: the last I've tried, it's a rom still young, so still buggy
-Cyanogenmod: too slow, I cannot even play fruit ninja smoothly
So what do I have to do? What do I have to flash to have good results?
I know ur feeling.....ive done the same......but i got the thing that stock rom is the most stable rom for ur phone.....and if u want to increase its performance......just change the kernel not the rom.......

i will suggest u one of those bytecode rom omgb or omfgb...they can be ur permanent rom
Thanks to both you! Now I try to use stock rom (modded a bit) and when bytecode's rom will be bugless, I will try one of them
Thanks for the suggestion
I found Cyaongenmod with a custom Vsync of kernel to be the best Rom, as the battery lasts as long as Froyo used to run (LG gingerbread is what convinced me to Root, with its HORRIBLE battery life compared to froyo).
Cyanogenmod I find is preety battery efficient and smooth with the DJNoXD kernel (Vsync off), and I changed max_events in Build.prop to 160 and its very smooth scrolling now, and I find this tweak only works with Vsync of, as max_events is max frame rates for UI, and will always be limited to 60 frames with vsync on, as kernel > build.prop

Belive me, stock rom is the best option. But not with default kernel. I have tried every rom for months and i realize that stock is the way to go. Maybe i will change to ics when all bugs wil be fixed if there will be a stable ics rom in the feature.
it´s sad...
but stock rom ist the best but it´s really NOT good...
all roms i tried have bugs... if you want a good phone with no (or almost no) bugs buy a google nexus or an iphone or a windows-phone

Man, have some faith. If you're not deving you can't complain about having a buggy phone guys.
Plus, if you looked through this here section, you'll find plenty of mods to make your phone faster.
Google TurboBoostv8.5 if you want a real speed increase for any 2.3.x rom. Also, overclock to a stable 480/729 or 480/748. Which I can almost gauruntee none of you are doing. You modded your phone, so look at tutorials, figure things out yourselves, it's a fun process Push your phone as far as it'll go.

[Q] ICS Slow & Laggy?

I've just been trying out GT-I9100_XEU_I9100XWLP7_I9100XXLPS_I9100XEULP5.tar from Infratech's stock ROM thread for the last day or so and have found it slow. Often I'll touch the screen and nothing will register or it will take a full second or so to respond. Starting apps can sometimes take up to two seconds before it seems to register. Scrolling long lists in various apps can sometimes show a small amount of lag on Gingerbread, but on this ROM it's horrific.
This can't be right can it? Is anyone else finding this? If this is progress in the name of ICS, I'll stick with GB.

I don't know about stock rooms but I'm on cm9 the latest nightly and its pretty slick to be honest. I can't wait until the wake locks are sorted but I just love it! I hate anything of Sammy stock firmware I think they are kind of clueless in that department but good in the hardware side of things. Also people have been talking about Sammy working on android 4.0.4 so that should fix any issues. Hope I helped you mate

I've been on cm9 for the last few months, and I have just dual-booted lp9 Samsung ICS rom yesterday, and I just couldn't believe how slow and laggy everything was in Samsung ICS rom compered to cm9 and Samsung gingerbread rom. The browser was horrendously laggy compared to Samsung gingerbread roms and the same issues as described by the OP. Also, the scrolling mechanism was just screwed up beyond belief. I really like the idea of switching between cm9 and Samsung roms when I feel like change, but at the moment I find all ICS Samsung roms, just unusable after using cm9. I hope Samsung fixes this mess in their next major update.
ICS 4.0.3 is not 100%
ICS 4.0.3 is not 100% perfect couple of issue are there.
Waiting for Samsung to Release 4.0.4 which will address many issues that are present in 4.0.3.
cm9 to me is draging ics behind it, when ics is improved cm9 will be mint ,im still on Gb but will flash when it gets up to 4.1.0 etc, i dont want these bugs in my daily life.
I'm using LP7, tweaked some cosmetic stuff, and I find it very fast and responsive. A friend recently changed from GB 2.3.6 to ICS 4.0.3 official via Kies and said (his words, not mine): its a whole new smartphone.
try cm9 buddy, best rom ive used atm
or you can try hydrogenics, its basically the same with some added tweaks.

ICS is smooth for me, very smooth. Don't use AOKP roms since lgcamera doesn't work well with them yet. Battery life is worse than sammy based roms as well, plus no dialer codes work. The only LAG I've gotten is with Quickpic. Don't know what the difference is between Quickpic on GB and this one on ICS but swiping across photos lags like hell and yet the stock gallery is now smooth like cream
For me, ICS is smooth as a baby's bottom, as long I stay on stock kernel. Once I flash a custom kernel, smoothness goes south. For this reason, although I like the fast charging feature in Siyah, I have to stay on stock.
dialer codes are working for me
cm9 is smooth as hell and more than stable for normal usage
yes, it is laggy. little better using Siyah.
No issues whatsoever when using AOKP roms. Try changing kernels.

I found a ROM that was receiving a lot of praise, called AndyX. It's using Siyah kernel if I remember right. I tried it and it was actually very good, nice and smooth, no complaints. It also has the ICS look I was expecting to see which was quite nice. You mention lgcamera not working on AOKP ROMs - I'd never heard of AOKP but have just done a quick google and may see what's kicking around for the S2. I know this is the wrong thread, but it's thanks to you I can now record video in 720p without in looking like a slideshow (lgcamera tips in another thread)
So, in summary, my initial choice entering the world of ICS just turned out to be a dud and there's hope yet.
EDIT: I may well go back to AndyX for a bit.. I had to restore to my normal GB ROM because I changed governor in AndyX and now the phone freezes before I can unlock it

AOKP is based off CM9 with other mods flung in (Look at Resurrection Remix or Hydrogenics) and they both run smooth. However I NEED lgcamera unless I get horrible FPS in the camera (looks like you know what I'm talking about lol). Just so you know, 1080p does work as well without lag just in case you didn't notice. I do prefer 720p though. No automatic zoom in like 1080p. I used to be on AndyX rom, quite some time ago actually
I came from Gingerbread KL1 & updated to LPG, gotta say even though I had the phone for 4 days (on GB) the lag is very much noticeable on ICS! The phone was just blazing quick everywhere but it just *feels* different now...

GAMING PERFORMANCE on CUSTOM ROMS @GAME FREAKS

Hey guys
This question is mainly aimed at gaming freaks who have also switched to custom roms.
Just wanna know how is the gaming performance (generally 3d games) on various roms like Resurrection remix, ics slim ,cm9, miui etc..
I saw in various threads that many 3d games lag more on such roms (at stock cpu/gpu settings)? Is it true? Coz if it is, then this is totally a deal buster for me..i was excited to flash RR but if games are lagging...there wont be any use of improved system performance lol on a custom rom
anyway guys do let me know the gaming problems with any of the popular roms..so i can make up my mind and finally flash a custom rom..
thanks

Games like Dead trigger, NOVA 3, shadowgun, Modern Combat 3 - lots of framerate issues on ICS custom rom. I never had issues on GB and never stayed on samsung ICS long enough to find out what that was like. Mundane tasks showed that it sucked balls, so I seriously doubt that it would be any different with intensive tasks like gaming.
I'd venture a guess that CM9 kernel is probably better than the majority of ICS kernels. My experience is that it just works alot better in general - other kernels have a lot of bells and wistles but other than some cool novelty feature, really aren't very different from each other. CM9's kernel really stands out for me. I have however heard good things about Fluxi kernel. I made the switch but it was much worse unfortunately others may have a different experience though.
The lag spikes seem to be random aswell, so I have my doubts any overclocking would help. If it happened in sequences with big open fields and lots of enemies on screen I'd understand, but when you are in a small corrider with no-one around, I can't think of why it should do it then. Not to mention it was seemless on stock GB (actually Villian ROM 3.0 and Redpill kernel).
But I've got CM9 running exactly how I want it and its stock CM9 kernel is actually pretty good, the games are good to play on it, but you do get annoying lag spikes somewhat frequently.

NFS: Most Wanted Performance?

Hey guys I just got NFS: Most Wanted on the ATT Note. The gameplay and the controls are great but the game sort runs in slowmo. Anybody else getting different performance in other ROMS?
I'm running flapjaxx's AOSP ICS rom W/ GPU OC and CPU OC. I assume the slowness is due to the Note's large resolution and it's not quite as optimized as it could be for our phones. It is smooth but just terribly slow.
UPDATE
OOOOKAY guys I am back with some interesting results!
I continued to try more roms and see the performance with Need for Speed Most Wanted. I first tried Flapjaxx's stock ICS rom with touchwiz with an overclock kernel and gpu OC. That ran better than any of the AOSP but still had some slowness to it.
Seeing as the stock roms tended to give more performance, I tried another stock rom. This one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766933. No OC kernel, everything stock pretty much. Here is what happened:
1. I restored NFS from titanium
2. NFS says this android is not compatible
3. I uninstall NFS and install it from the Playstore and redownload the SD data
4. Ran the game and observed that there was little to no lag! Well I'm sure it could be a bit better, the frame rate was totally playable and it actually felt speedy!
Now i'm not sure what is happening here. Either 1. the game downloaded a new SD data with lower graphics requirements, 2. the game recognized the device as a different device and choose the graphics setting accordingly, OR 3. the device just performs better @ mostly stock. Now can anybody inform me on how the SD Data actually works that would be great so I can pinpoint what it is.
My next test will be using the above rom that yielded good performance with flapjaxx's OC/GPU kernel to see if it speeds up the frames anymore.
UPDATE 2
After a bit more testing I see that without the OC kernel and using the kernel from 'better stock' ROM above, the road actually is missing some water and effects which is probably leading to the smoother gameplay! If anybody else is testing this let me know what your results are!
UPDATE 3
Trying out flappjaxx's Jelly Bean rom with his GPUOC and CPUOC. No surprise there, graphics got bumped up.
What I did notice is that there is almost NO DIFFERENCE in frames (from what I could see) from Stock rom + AOSP/JB roms with OC kernel in BUMPER CAMERA MODE despite the higher graphics. To be clear, those of you on AOSP that are already using bumper mode will not get higher frames in bumper mode on something like a stock rom. There is little to no difference in bumper modes. Should be all that I can test now. I will be sticking with this Jellybeanie and playing NFS in bumper camera mode myself (in car view).
EA, give us graphic options. That is all.
UPDATE 4
In conclusion:
Game is somehow determining the graphics through the kernel
SD Data downloaded is the same on every rom, don't have to download new SD Data.
Some roms perform better than others. I had a lot of luck with Jelly Bean roms on stock kernel, no need to overclock.
Figured I'd give you guys a ranking list from roms. Going from best to worst
1. Latest Jelly Bean Nightly 11/21 Stock Kernel - Great out of car and even faster in car - graphics medium
2. Flapjaxx's FJ Stock Rom Mod - OCGPU/CPU best performance (in car view only) - graphics high
3. Electro's Stock Rom - Stock Kernel with no OC Okay performance in both out of car view and in car view - graphics medium

Ditto, switching to in-car view is definitely a lot smoother, has decent graphics but looks like the limit of S3 Adreno 225 chip has been reached, this (and other games of similar graphic quality) may be enough reason for me to upgrade to note 2 later. I also have slow down problem with NBA 2K13.
No real graphic glitch however, if you see missing textures it has to be wrong sd data, remember we are Snapdragon NOT Mali.
Im on liquid RC7 with KK.12 kernel no overclocking and the game seems to run fine for me with no lags..however Tomdg07 is right its a battery hog which quite frankly isnt a surprise. I just got off a 30 minute subway ride and I was playing it the entire time..used up exactly 20% of the battery.

Yes indeed no lag at all - Liquid is a jellybeanie you can find it in the original development thread. To be honest I havent had the need to try in car view because the out car view has been working fine.
I should mention though that whilst I have not over clocked I am using several build prop tweaks some of which Im sure optimize graphics and what not.

Just tried NFS Most Wanted on Liquid with KK Kernel and no luck. I even tried some build prop tweaks. It just feels too slow. Weird.
Going to try deleting it and redownloading the SD Data instead of restoring it from Titanium. Will report back with results.
EDIT: No go either. Still low frame rates. On a good note however, Liquid Jellybean Rom is probably the most stable of the Jellybeanies.

After a bit more testing I see that without the OC kernel, the road actually is missing some water and effects which is probably leading to the smoother gameplay! If anybody else is testing this let me know what your results are!
I really just wish there was an in-game settings option to reduce the graphics quality...... (if there is and I'm missing it please fill me in)

Agreed. Right now there is no way to change graphics quality. Certainly would save me trouble. What I think is happening is that with some Roms and Kernels the game thinks we have higher hardware and cranks up the graphic quality thus slowing down the performance of the game.
What I found is every time I used an OC kernel of some type, the game slows. So it might be a kernel issue.
I just cant comprehend why despite having the same phone and same setup (i.e. rom, kernel etc) we get totally different results.
PS> Tomdg07 props to your state for pushing obama over the 270 he needed to win. Americans totally made up for giving dubya two terms.
I was testing some more Roms yesterday including Black IV and Electro's stock debloated Rom. Black IV had flapjaxx's kernel with the ability to OC and on the Electro was not OCable.
My results were the same. Something about flapjaxx's kernel or kernels with the ability to OC makes the game bump up in graphics thus making it slower. The game must be scanning the clockspeed or something or maybe it's something deeper than that. If I can I want to test out AOSP roms again to see if its the kernel or both the kernel + the rom.
UPDATE: Those of you that are finding this page and reading this post. Look on the front page for what roms are the best for this game.
Got an alert to update the game when opening it, after updating it won't even open, anyone else issues after update?

Same issue. Luckily I had a backup of the SD data on my hard drive so I can revert back. But yeah something messed up in that download messed up the game for us.

Only form of a backup I have is in the nandroid backup I did before flashing cm10, I suppose I could dig it out of there somehow, but I'll give them a day or two to fix it first

[Q] Some games keep freezing

Well, I'm having some trouble when it comes to 3D rendering on my phone, whenever I use a combination of an AOSP/AOKP based rom (happened to me with latest Task's AOKP and Slim Bean build 5) and some semi intensive and, of course, intensive games, after some time, system crashes completely, the sound gets stuck in a loop of the latest 0.1 seconds (lol) and pretty much nothing works, I have to pull the battery. This happens normally in the first 30 seconds.
I believe this happens because of the new drivers, as those games (Rayman Origins, Beach Buggy Blitz and Real Racing 3) work perfectly with stock JB. But those are just guesses. Any help is appreciated,
Thanks!
It's not that I'm hurrying you, or demanding you to help me, but I'm still having the same problem and I can't find any solution. :S Please lol
If you couldn't give the answer for this you didn't look hard enough.

hey there, just flashed task's 4.2.2 yesterday and I am getting the same problem while trying to play Simpsons Tapped Out. Have you been able to figure anything out?
I originally thought it was the kernal having an issue with allocating resources, but my searches show that other people have the same problem with 4.2.2. If this is how its gonna be I may have to revert back to 4.1.2....

Check cpu/gpu voltage levels. My phone used to crash when playing graphically intensive games until I realized my gpu voltages were set too low.
This happens to me with NFS Most Wanted and NOVA 3. Any other game seems to work. I really want 4.2.2 CM 10.1 or AOKP or any of those Nexus like ROMs, but I ran into the same problem with all of them. Came to the conclusion is just 4.2.2 Vanilla based ROMs. Since then I've switched to SHOstock3. I really want the Nexus experience though. I just don't want to have to give up games I've paid for .
