SOD on ICS - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
My mom got herself a Galaxy S2 a month ago, but it seems to be suffering from SOD. Now I googled and I haven't found any fix for this even though the phone is very popular. Is it a hardware problem? At the shop they offered her to send it to samsung but if it's a software issue (like on my galaxy ace) that's not gonna help. She's on Android ICS 4.0.4, can't remember the firmware anymore (something ending in D i think). The phone's not sim locked or anything so I could flash firmware myself but i prefer not to since it's not my device. Any help would be appreciated.

can you get the phone into Download mode ?
(vol.down-home-power)
if so you should grab a firmware from sammobile.com and flash it with odin.
if it not goes into Download mode you could get an usb jig and try to force it into Download mode.

1 month old phone + SOD + your mom's phone = return it, don't temper with it.

[Q] No available update on kies (even though i should have!)

Hi all, I'm new to posting here but a vet over at samdroid.
I've looked around quite a bit and my problem seems to be unique...annoyingly.
I got my S2 on contract from O2 about 4 days ago, instantly went home and found out I was eligible to upgrade to ICS officially via kies. I have been on kies and connected my phone every day since, and I keep getting told I have the latest version (2.3.5), even though I've seen countless threads/comments of people delighted about the fact they upgraded through kies!
I was thinking of trying odin (i was a pro at updating roms on my spica), but don't know if using an offical update through odin instead of kies would void my warranty etc. NOTE: I don't want to actually root my phone (yet)
I hope that all made sense and any help would be much appreciated
Thanks,
Oli

make sure you got i9100 not any other varient
does other O2 in your area got ICS via KIES
odin is fine and will not void warrenty aslong you dont root and flash back the ROM you have now. you have to find this ROM first if you want to go back.

well o2 have officially released updates in the UK, if thats what you mean? will there be a thread on this forum with the offical ICS ROM or will i have to find it via google?
I got my S II on monday from o2 and I beleive its the I9100p not the I9100, if yours has NFC written on the back its the I9100p and for some reason there is no ICS on kies yet for it

what do you mean by this?
also is there an official rom for my particular S2 that can be updated using odin? or even an unofficial one that wont void warranty?
thanks for all the help guys
This Thread has instructions and official ICS.
Plz note that this is official and will have TouchWiz and does look extremely similar to Gingerbread and without root and custom theme you will not get that ICS feel. You will however get most of the goodies that ICS has to offer.
I got my S2 on contract from O2 about 4 days ago, instantly went home and found out I was eligible to upgrade to ICS officially via kies.
Well that's not exactly true you upgrade if their is an upgrade for your exact phone .
Kies has firmware for GT-i9100KAO2U product code .
I have been on kies and connected my phone every day since, and I keep getting told I have the latest version (2.3.5), even though I've seen countless threads/comments of people delighted about the fact they upgraded through kies!
But not for your phones product code which obviously does not match the released O2 firmware .O2 may well and probably over twelve months had more than one phone for sale unless contract has different codes to PAYG .
Standard older O2 UK firmware for xxx Product codes is on Kies its also on this forum in a legitimate flash via Odin .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487
legitimate O2 firmware not stock Samsung tested and works on O2 .
Or you can go to Google find CHECKFUS and try to download from your codes .
jje
you still didnt confirm if you have i9100P which i think you have but i could'nt find the Stock ROM your running now, so you can go back to it later if required.
if you have i9100P this thread has good news for you though the actuall thread is stupid and useless...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24030713
i think what happened to u is you got the model which is i9100P not the usuall i9100, thus all on normal model are on ICS and you still on GB. you can wait for it to come or use the i9100 ROM's but please search if that is actually possible.

i read somewhere that i can use i9100 firmwares on my i9100P, so which of those 2 links would you recommend? also, is there a lot of risk or is it pretty easy and you're just covering yourself?
finally, if i update like this, will i be able to update officially through kies when the update is finally released for me?
no im not covering my self...... i tell you in points....
1: you got I9100P on O2 for which i cant find a firmware for.
2: because you cant go back to your old firmware which is O2 you will get into warrenty problems

ok, i guess i'll wait for the official update then. thanks for your help
here are your options if you still want to continue.
1: you can flash stock firmware for i9100.
2: you can flash custom firmware
3: you can flash O2 branded firmware for i9100.
but in all cases NFC wont work by default.
plus now you cant go back to O2 i9100P firmware as it cannot be found anywhere... atleast by me.

[Q] Chinese i9308 galaxy s3 problem

Hello all,
I have encountered a problem on my i9308 galaxy s3 so I hope some of you on xda could help me out.
First of all, I got the phone from China Mobile. As such, there was no play store or any google related apps. Thus I flashed a custom rom using cwm.
Everything was fine, until I noticed the micro sim card was not recognized, and so I flashed everything back to the stock rom. But now, even though I do get bars, whenever I try to call, it says "not registered on the network".
I also tried flashing a custom rom in cwm then flash the i9308 modem in odin, but the stop sign symbol is still present. I also tried flashing an UK firmware (PDA) and the i9308 modem but odin fails at the modem flashing part.
Frustrated, I took the phone to the T-mobile store, but they figure out what's wrong with the phone. They gave me the number for tech support, but I have a feeling that they won't resolve this problem.
Thank you for reading this post, sorry for the long story, but I wanted to give the whole picture for my problem.
I would gladly appreciate any help at all, so post your ideas, even if it's far fetched.

No, the Galaxy S3 GT-i9308 is only sold by the company China Mobile, so if you've never lived in China, you probably have never seen one.
On another note, I'm still having the same issues. I flashed the i9300 (US) firmware onto my i9308 to basically turn the OS into an american version but now my SIM is not being recognized and the phone will not register for any updates. Im going to just flash back to the stock i9308 firmware, root it then uninstall all the chinese apps, flash to AT&T and it should work fine considering I was able to flash to ATT, previously, before flashing the i9300 firmware, and everything worked fine except for having problems getting the Google App store to work correctly and such...which I'm sure I can play around with it a little longer to figure that out. Anyways - hopefully some of my errors will help stop others from doing the same.
where did u get the stock firmware ?

Can you share the link for the i9308 stock firmware or the original baseband version.

Why don't my s3 get updates?

Hi i've only had one update on my s3 and everyone had like 2-3 one of wich fixed the laucher re-draw... I tried to search for a reason on the forum but I didn't find any.
It's an unbranded i9300
Baseband: i9300ublf2
Build number: IMM76D.I9300UBALF3
thanks for the answers !
It can depend on the country and when your carrier pushes them to their server for update. Or are you rooted with a different Kernel? In that case you will no longer get updates to your phone from the carrier.
If all else fails, meh, don't worry. Just look for an official update release! Use ODIN and flash it to your phone. The country of origin won't matter as long as the rom is for the S3 i9300! I actually find this better.
I'm in canada and only rooted.
My carrier won't send the update since it doesn't carry the phone...
I thought I'd get them directly from Samsung but I guess not,..
If you bought the phone in retail than you'll get the updates directly from Samsung.
However your region is still of importance. Use Odin with http://samfirmware.com and be happy (Flashing Original Rom's does not void your warranty)
Thanks I think i'll have to do that!

[Q] Insurance replacement ROM Update issues

Hi Guys.
I had my galaxy s2 replaced about 6 months ago after it got stolen.
I had 3 replacements until i got my last one which i still have.
The details:
Network: Three UK
Originally received the phone on: 2.3.6 XWKK2
At the time i tried to upgrade the firmware to ICS, but it wouldn't let me saying none was available either over air or through Keis.
So i took to the forums, and found that the firmware for this version was listed as Opus Australia.
Eventually i found some fware that worked: I9100XWLP7 Baseband Version:I9100XXLPS. Android 4.0.3
I have recently been having a few problems with my phone:
1. It crashes sometimes when i try to type a message: Unfortunately, MAPServiceSamsung has stopped,
2. When i try turn the wireless on sometimes it doesn't come on, the screen doesn't come on again and needs restarting
3. When i try turn wifi tethering on it needs a restart?
So, i was initially thinking of a version of ROM that was generic UK 4.0.3 , so that i can naturally upgrade to 4.1.2 when it finally gets to the UK.
Then i found 4.0.4 which i discounted because of a thread that said it could brick the phone if i used the wrong kernell (i am no techy).
So does anyone know of a good rom i can use that is generic UK either 4.0.3 or 4.0.4 that i can fix my phone with?
Also how do i find out what CSC my phone is on? so i can replace that too?
Thanks

Hi thanks for your response. I have looked on there, but cant seem to find the correct 4.0.3 version.
There's a thread in original android development with many stock ROMs.
The OP is from the supernexus dev.
You can find it easily by looking at his threads.

[Q] Where to get latest firmware update for korean Galaxy S3 phone?

Hi,
I have Korean Samsung Galaxy S3.
Model number: GT-I9300
Android Version: 4.1.9
It's been 1 year using it. First 7 to 8 months it worked fine but suddenly I don't know what happened to it. It's loosing battery power very speedily. Prior battery took 1 or 1(1/2) day to drain completely but now it takes only 3 to 4 hours and gets drain completely. I searched a lot on internet but nothing helped.
I took it to repair shop and he said phone, charging port and battery is fine, so no idea what happened to it.
I purchased a new battery and used with it but same results.
It is very frustrating situation. Please anybody suggest me any solution?
I talked to somebody and he said there may be a OS issue so I hard reset it but same results. Then he suggested me to update its OS version. Now I am trying to find the latest firmware update for Korean Galaxy S3 phone. Kindly help me to find that firmware and the complete procedure to install that firmware on Korean Galaxy S3?
I would be very thankful to you for any solution.
Thanks.
