I am providing a word document containing the top easiest self service mods for SGY discovered by me and not at all copied,,
I Have myself dug into xml and matched pngs to make this so dont you dare accuse me of cheating
--->These are simple since they require only xml and png editing (no SMALI)
--->Self service since they require some work common sense and apk compile/decompiling tools and not flashable zips
--->Fun since they totally revamp the hell of SGY
--->I am not new to modding but new to xda so i cant provide a dropbox link,, so i attached the file,,,
--->PRESS THANKS IF YOU LIKED IT AND HELP ME RISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The ss are in the word document itself,,
i will update this doc with more as i learn to make more mods easily ,,,, i have many more,,, do see and wait ,, ask as many questions as you can
just read it,
i have made some guides on these mods before but yours is an entirely different method,
i'd suggest rather than attatching a docx file,
just make a thread for this,
so people could appreciate your work more,
i find it helpful and very useful when it comes to xml parcing,
have a thanks too,
you deserve it
Nice share

I have only seen a couple of tutorials around on how to deal with 9.png images and they were not very informative and left me just as confused as before. I have put together a Powerpoint presentation that aims to make it a little more clear. While this presentation is not comprehensive it does give the basics of how to fix and deal with 9.pngs.
Just download the file and remove the .zip extension.
For more info on Draw9Patch tool see the official Android Developers page here http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/draw9patch.html
I'll be happy to try and answer anyone's questions and please if you have a tip or trick to add feel free.
I wish you could make a guide on how to theme miui... =[

Very nice. Thanks for this.
Thanks I have been doing alot of work arounds for these. I have also found a way to edit them colorwise in photoshop without having to redraw them. This comes in pretty handy when making alot of color variations of the same themes/roms. It is really quite easy all you do is open them in photoshop then hit image>hue and saturation then play with the master color bar do not touch lightness or go below 0 on saturation. If you mess with negative saturation or lightness it will lighten the draw9 guides and they will no longer work. If anyone is interested in trying it do so at your own risk, I have not had any problems doing it this way.
Now I just need to figure out how to properly use jarsigner and im set lol....
Now this is a useful post, thank you
Thanks
Allot of useful info here also

I think I need a tutorial for that tool. I can get it to check my images which is handy but other than that I'm not sure what it does.

That's very nice, however I've tried mod the bubbles from the Mms.apk a few times and can't get them to look normal afterwards. Text is outside the bubble etc... Any suggestions? There has to be a trick to those.

In addition to this great tutorial, feel free to grab some great 9 patch PNGS from my site.
I'm adding more daily and you have permission to use for all your android apps, including commercial projects.
I use photoshop now to create them, using various styles. It works like a charm.

you use the ninepatch jar that comes in the sdk. the lines are the guides by which the image is stretched.
on another note. ultimatex is a nice idea, however i would reccomend not using it. the problem comes when you decompile an apk that has .9 images that were compiled with ultimatex. the image and the patch seperate into two seperate files and prevents recompile. its just as easy to decompile the entire apk, edit your .9's then recompile the apk.
Just to add to an earlier post when using Photoshop or fireworks or gimp or any editing till you like you simply select the image with the box tool like your cropping the image being sure to select Only inside the black 1 pixel area. Doing this you can change the color brightness saturation or even add to the image. As long as your changes don't go into the black area you can pretty much do anything.

thats an excelent point. if for some reason the guide lines do get messed up, just delete that part and redraw the lines in nine patch. people fear .9 images and they shouldnt, they only take a little extra effort.
Hey guys,
I'm building a theme and i'm running in to some trouble. I'm hoping someone might want to team up with me on this who has a little more experience. Currently, i have themed all the images in drawable-hdpi, and it took me about two days of work to do. I replaced the originals within 7zip with my new ones and then ran the rom through my kitchen to resign it...but now i'm getting errors about the framework when i try to do anything.
So anyway, i'd like to be able to just make this in to a flashable .zip theme that can be used on all the roms. If anyone can help me out, i'd appreciate it. Send me a PM and i will email you a zip of all the files i have themed so far, and we can collaborate from there. This theme is Orange...It looks real nice and i've put a lot of work in to it so far. Painstakingly long hours. Thanks in advance.

If your using 7zip to replace the images than there is no need to resign it.

No takers?
so i'm trying to learn how to theme but i can only really get a hang of theming stuff like the framework-res.apk and easy stuff like that. some of the apps (like the calculator and what-not) have their stuff all in a xml file. how the heck do it edit that? i'm on a mac fyi..... i'm used to just replacing .png files. this seems to be a bit more complicated than i may be able to even do. any help would be much appreciated. thanks!
Miui theme developers are very helpful u might wana try posting there.

Hey peeps,
I'm finally trying to get into themeing my 3D on my own and would like to know where I can find the names of each individual file that I can edit and what it changes within the ROM. For example the text input areas what are the names of those files within the framework-res.apk? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated and if this has already been covered can you point me to the right place because searches aren't bringing up anything. Also, Mods if this is in the wrong place, move it for me. thanx
You need to know that you can't edit all files or think that all is in png's since some of them are values and not graphics. FE if you want to mod the dialer you need to edit the xml files.

Thanx ssojyeti2!!
but I still don't see anyone explaining what the specfic file names are for the images within the system\framework\framework-res.apk\res\drawable-hdpi\ or other similar places you can edit/switch out pngs. I've extracted the images but you can't always tell which image affects what within a ROM.
Nobody makes lists of all the images because there are thousands of them and they constantly change with software versions. Most are always in drawable-hdpi

Unfortunately man it is exactly as notsointeresting said. Basically its looking through all the images and finding what you think may change what, then just edit it and test it. The only tutorials you'll find are how to edit the actual .9 pngs and maybe some text edits. Here's one that I had posted in the Interactive Phone Modification thread, but it is just color text edits that can be made in framework-res for sense 3.6.

If you give me £1,000,000 I'll name them. Seriously tho experiment and after you have done a few themes you will start to know what does what. I quite often ask mayfield for the 0x0000000 numbers of m10 files because he has modded the fusion so may times he has learnt mot of them from by heart. Good luck

This thread. I love it. Seriously though, look at the file names and try to relate them common, divider, ect...
And as soon as you figure it out you'll get a newer operating system and have to start over. That's where the fun is.
I figured out evo 4g and then I bought a evo 3d. Then figured it out and then bought the el tevo. It's a vicious cycle.

Knight has list of a handful probably has more of em named now. But you learn pretty quick what is what after you do it a few times. . As for other pngs edit as many as you want in the system ui frame work res and so on. Also look in the sticky section a lot of info you should read up on.

Set your explorer window to grid the images spread out then look at your phone and then look for the image you want to change in your explorer window.
Make a few changes and send the file to your phone reboot and see if it worked.
It's long hard tedious work but rewarding in the end when you finish and people download.

You are wrong about Dialer , open phone.apk find the image and edit like you want like I do
I have seen many people asking about guides on how to theme frameworks and stuff on android. I searched in google and found a decent guide that will help those who want to get into theming. I didnt create this guide, i just found it and shared it with you. I also dont think that i violate any rules that prohibit sharing from external webpages. Enjoy
