Currently on Checkrom XWLA4 2.3.6 with Speedmod kernal.
Last night I performed a Titanium backup and a Nandroid backup in preparation for an upgrade. I had previously performed an EFS backup sometime back. I didn't perform the upgrade, just completed some backups. Anyways over night something seems to have gone wrong with my phone. I wake up to find that it's showing there's no SIM card detected and then when I checked baseband version and IMEI both are showing unknown as well as a bunch of other fields.
I've tried a number of ways to restore the EFS folder. I've tried GSII_Repair, EFS Pro 1.9, kTool, and a couple of manual methods. All of which give the same result.
Some strange things that I noticed, I have an EFS folder inside of an EFS folder. The /efs folder seems to have less files then the /efs/efs folder. Also /efs/efs folder was the fold that had the .nv_data.bak and .nv_data.bak.md5. Not sure if its suppose to be that way.
Wondering what the best way to try to get my phone up and running would be.
Thanks,
Lu.

The problem:
(a) You performed nandroid backup in CWM recovery while your phone was connected to the charger. This is a known bug of almost all versions of CWM recovery.
(b) Baseband missing means that your Modem was wiped off which happened as a result of the bug in (a.)
Further Explanation
a. this has nothing to do with your /efs folder
b. If baseband is missing then the phone can never read your IMEI, hence no network
Possible Solution
a. Download Modem (CWM zip format) of your choice. If you already have a modem then, skip to next step
b. Disconnect your phone from the charger
c. Boot to CWM recovery
d. Flash modem.zip you downloaded
e. Reboot phone
check your phone info after reboot (give your phone about 5 minutes to settle down), your IMEI, network etc should be back now
good luck

it was definitely plugged into my usb port charging at the time. just tried what you recommended and still the same issue. i wouldn't be surprised if everything that i tried today with the efs folder made it worse.
any recommendations? would it help if i tried a fresh install of xwla4 (2.3.6) or something newer like xwlpg (4.0.3)?
really need to get this fixed. any info or step-by-steps are greatly appreciated.
thanks.

You shouldn't have messed with your efs partition after the issue came up. it's suppose to be the last solution and not the first one.
ok.
try this:
-Remove your SIM.
-Reboot to CWM recovery
-Flash modem
-wipe cache partition
-wipe dalvik cache
-reboot phone
-Allow phone to stay for 5 mins.
-check your phone info, check IMEI
if both are back fine, just reinsert your sim and continue normal life.
let me know what happens

Not sure what happened or how this happened but while I was retrieving the information from the About Phone screen the baseband was showing unknown and then once I glanced back down to get some more info, it just appeared and within another few seconds I got my IMEI and cellular services started working!
Thank you very much kind sir! Greatly appreciated!

When you have this kind of problem, messing with /efs should always be the last solution and not the first one.

in your own case, where baseband and imei was missing, changing anything in the efs comes last because, if it's other thing related, flashing modem , firmware and things like that should fix the problem.
Then the last thing is messing with /efs partition.
Why, because, efs partition is not touched during flashing of ROM/firmware. It contains sensitive files, and should only be modified as last resort.

I did a back up on sd and pc. Before. I had only flashed from rr 2.6.1 rom to a jb rr rom after a few days of not changing any thing it came up network locked enter code etc. Whilst out driving so nothing I changed iko. Now it still changes imei but I have a stored working backup so I jus restore that and reboot. Would a modem and rom have to be compatible? I've never changed my modem do I need too and is it flashable? thanks
I only have these problems cos standard isn't different..

GII_repair (app), you must backup your efs first,
Or manually repair your efs folder by following the tutorial here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264021

Well, you might want to provide your recent history with the device e.g. have you recently flashed a new firmware etc?
only time I lost my IMEI number was after 'upgrading' to XXLK3 from XXLK2.
I downloaded the split F/W from these forums for XXLK2 and XXLK3 (I need the BTU CSC thats in XXLK3) I make bastard flash in ODIN Odin3_V3.07 using the pit file and re-partitioning (PLEASE DO NOT RE-PARTITION UNLESS YOU HAVE THE FILE: cooperve_0623.pit)
I used the PDA from XXLK2 the MODEM from XXLK3 and the CSC from XXLK3 every thing works well thith latest Rafeal kernel (E3 Version) so it fits me OK. I am looking for CWM on latest Rafeal Kernel to be compatiable with RFS so I can use my custom cooked Rom seeing as I cant get EXT4 to work...
Hope this helps?

Geezz, download it using pc/laptop. Google it. Transfer it to your sdcard using sd card reader/adapter. Install it.
s5830i blank IMEI
This link worked for me but with one change.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33563594#post33563594
When i did *#06# there was no IMEI. I can not make calls or SMS. Everything else including wi-fi, bluetooth worked fine.
Upon rooting my s5830i and using Android Mate or ES File Explorer, the /efs folder was empty. I did not see any files in it what so ever. Even selected Show hidden Files option in the file explorer settings. Still /efs folder was empty. I could not add files to the /efs folder or not even delete it so that it gets recreated upon boot as suggested in some other posts. All the posts related to hex editing of nv_data.bin were of no use. I felt miserable for not having a backup of the /efs folder.
However, Galaxy Toolbox (available on Google Play Store) was able to Backup EFS Partition. It created
/sdcard/GalaxyToolbox/EFSpart.img.SAVE and /sdcard/GalaxyToolbox/EFSpart.img.TMP. So that was strange. However I did not know what to do with this backup until I saw the link mentioned above.
I followed exactly the same steps in that post by replacing the following
1. / sdcard/SGYunlock/bml15.img.SAVE in my case was /sdcard/GalaxyToolbox/EFSpart.img.SAVE
After applying those steps and a reboot, *#06# showed up my correct IMEI.
Phone Details:
Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830i
PDA: S5830IXXLD3
CSC: S5830IODDLD2
MODEM: S5830IDDLD1
PCode : GT-S5830OKIINS
Model Number: GT-S5830i
Android Version 2.3.6
Baseband Version S5830iDDLD1
Kernel Version 2.6.35.7 [email protected]#1
Build Number GINGERBREAD.XXLD3
More trouble with IMEI on s5830i...
Hi everyone. I have a similar, yet apparently a tad bit different problem with IMEI on my phone.
As with everyone else, typing *#06# shows an empty IMEI, and when I open Settings --> About Phone --> Status, it says "unknown" for IMEI, and "01" for IMEI SV.
However, I am able to make calls, send SMS, connect to mobile internet, etc. Also, when I run the Galaxy Toolbox and check phone details there, the Toolbox sees my IMEI normally. And if I backup the EFI partition and open it in Hex editor, my IMEI is there, as it always was.
For now, the only solution to getting back my phone to see it's own IMEI is to flash it back to stock ROM via Odin, and not to touch anything. It seems that whenever I try to install a custom kernel (i.e. one of the kernels compiled by the fine people here at XDA Developers), my IMEI disappears, and nothing short of an Odin flash will return it.
I've tried the method mentioned in this thread, but to no avail.
Am I doing something wrong? If so, what?

Stock ROM without IMEI
Hmm,
the HexEditor method doesn't work for me, because it is not showing any IMEI inside.
Galaxy Toolbox also doesn't show my IMEI.
I flashed back to Stock ROM (taken the open Australia stock rom from the UNBRICK tutorial).
After successfully flashing back (did factory reset and wipe cache before flashing back), IMEI is still not shown.
What am I doing wrong?
I had AOSP 2.3.6 Firmware installed before.
Is that any chance to get my IMEI back again?

Have you tried typing the IMEI into the EFI file through HexEditor? Check out the scrots in this thread to see where the IMEI should be, and type it in there.
Also, backup everything first. Including the "faulty" EFI file you dumped from your phone.
After having S3 for some months, I decided to update it to 4.3.
So I searched online and saw some tutorials how to root and install costum ROMs.
I read few tutorials to be sure how to do that and after all went good and the ROM installed, One problem has rised: NO SIGNAL!
so I wiped all and installed a ROM STOCK.
After that the signal came back "half way". It's showing signal bars but I can't call to anyone, even after calling to my provider...
I just don't know what to do. Please help

That is your backup flash with odin
( When you flashed a custom rom it probably backed up your efs some roms backup by default)
I would just backup your efs you have at the moment just in case you have problems flashing. You will then be able to return to how your efs is now even though it is not fully working..
Or try this app >> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.hellcat.droiddev.ktool <<
The phone has to bee rotted to use ktool?
I also understand from the link you did about the EFS that there are two types of base bands and if I have an efs backup that I did on V1 baseband so I can't restore it on a v2 baseband, so my conclusion is to get back to 4.1.2... correct me if I am wrong

good that you found efs backup
yes you need root. or you use the recovery philz touch to restore your efs (then you don't need root, but a custom recovery).
well samsung roms based on 4.3 need efs v2, so you have to go back to 4.1.2 to restore your efs v1 backup.
if everything is working again, I would suggest you to use oding to upgrade to 4.3, because then everything should be updated correctly (but keep your efs backup, and make another one, just to be sure)
then you can try out again custom roms based on sammy 4.3
So what is the best option to restore it?
Because before I tried (while 4.3 stock rom was installed) the flash it with Odin but Odin always crashed when I was uploading it to Odin.
With kTool I tried before but when I am clicking on the button it says that it restored but he didn't asked for directory, when do I need to put it?
The same story with phliz, I also tried with this and he don't asks for directory, only asking whan the ending if the file-tar to bin...

Hmm... try installing another EFSv2 modem, then do the /efs copying part again.
Suddenly after so restarts, the IMEI got back
But... The SN now is 0000000000
You'll need to correct the permissions of the files you've copied. Try searching for someone who already did this and duplicate what they did.

Ok,
I tried something new. I flashed a new modem, backed up a full backup and then installed a costum rom 4.3.
the IMEI GOT BACK! And even the SERIAL NUMBER!
But I think the serial number is not good because he has 16 or 17 (I don't remember) digits (numbers and letters).
But still i have signal bars but can't make or receive calls he says: "No registered on network"
For the finalle, I tried ARIZA patch but he Is stuck on 0%...
here I stopped, I really don't know what to do.
Don't use the Ariza patch once you've got your IMEI and SN back. Maybe try flashing a new stock version of Android with a EFSv2 baseband so as to not go through the copying fiasco.

I have a Samsung SII SHW-M250S and got it converted to I9100 through flashing a stock I9100 ICS ROM with .pit for the I9100. It converted properly and is working great.
My problem is when I flashed a custom ROM, I lost my IMEI and the baseband is unknown. The thing is I don't have back-up of my /efs folder or any CWM back-up before my problem occurred. I've tried mostly everything and still looking for almost a week now. Tried EFS Pro, restore and back-up of EFS through SGSII_repair, kTool, etc, flashing a modem, returned to stock JB of SHW-M250s, among others. There is an error showing in recovery mode, "E:/Unable to mount '/efs'"

Is the 'efs' folder ther in the root of ur current ROM?
Try reverting back to the stock ROM, by extracting the files from the stock rom u got from sammobile.
(u need to hav everythin mentioned in ODIN. ie PIT, phone, pda etc. This u get by extractin the stock rom using cygwin n splitfus)
once all files are in order, select them and also select 'repartition' option in odin and flash..
Ur phone wil reboot and hopefully u wil hav ur efs folder with imei back..

Yes, it does. I did do that, problem is, the problem persists. Tried both copying /efs folder from both stock JB of SHW-M250S and I9100 but no progress. At least now I don't get the mount error on /efs.
Well, I hope there are other guides as I'm stumped at the moment. Using it though as a media device for now.

U copied efs folder from where??
The efs folder has phone IMEI and Baseband numbers.. Its unique for each phone... (copying from ROMs is pointless)
Hope u didn delete the folder from the phone while trying out stuff with it.
If that folder is by any mistake, deleted, ur phone wil loose its imei number forever
and u wil have no choice but to give it to Samsung Care. ( or try using samsung's SRS tool (u find tutorials on youtube for this))
If u didn delete the folder from ur phone, try flashing the stock rom with the correct PIT file with 'repartiton' ticked.
(Use PIT with caution.)
Choose PIT to ur phone from here (Stock 2gb PIT for i9100. I dunno for SHW-M250S though) n follow the steps.
(search the forum for ur model specific PIT files to use it wit its specific ROM. SHW-M250S ROM with its PIT only)
---<>---
Since u have converted ur phone to i9100, u should be able to use i9100 PIT with i9100 Stock ROM to flash.
( i hav provided i9100 PIT file link above. Use it with i9100 Stock ROM only )
If this works, awesome..

The thing is, I did not delete the /efs folder but I think it is corrupted, copied it to my computer and copied a stock /efs from M250S, and tried with I9100 /efs folder too. I did reflash to stock with their corresponding .pit files but IMEI is still null/null.
I guess I'll just give up since it is too costly to have it for repairs here.

I had managed to repair a messed up IMEI through samsung's SRS tool.. Give it a shot..
U should be back in stock ICS for this. and use the SRS' test login itself. it sometimes work.
U can find tutorials on you-tube...

I think you need a UART cable or a box for that, and investing money is out of the question mate. Could you give me a link for the actual 'tool' you're referring to? Might be a different software.
Hoping at least I could get the 00000... IMEI just to use this phone.

I don't think that it matters if your imei is null, that program should be able to restore it.
Do you have an older PC to try it on?
I don't know about the i9100, I've not had mine long, but on the i9000 you could restore the imei simply by flashing a stock gingerbread firmware with Odin.. Maybe worth a try also.

Try running with compatibility mode. (right click on exe -> props -> compatibility -> change to earlier windows)
I have it running on my 8.1..
JB has a bug that dont allow this to work.. So be on ICS Stock + rooted to use this app.
(It might say 'not enuf credit', but keep trying. Suddenly it wil work)
I've tried multiple SRS download, but it always says internal files are corrupted, please reinstall program, well something like that.

Only tried it on Win 8 with enabled compatability until Win XP SP3. Yeah, used stock ICS on SHW-M250S and rooted it, tried several times until all the methods ran completely, no change after reboot.
Then I converted it to stock ICS I9100 and rooted it also. Now the SRS won't even complete a method, just after starting, it auto-closes. Will try it on Win 7 when I get the chance.

Same here (Think we done the same thing with the Marshmallow 6.0.1 leak) I backed up, but the new version of TWRP I have has EFS as a separate option, I never even noticed and never backed it up.
However I Flash with smartswitch, and after reflashing the bootloader with odin and a Root Kernel, I can boot into the device and using root explorer, I CAN see my EFS folder. I deleted the .nv_data.bin files and changed the .nv_data.bak to .nv_data.bin (was an older date) and I now have the network options back but a generic IMEI and can't register on a network.
I feel SO close to getting it up and running, but if smartswitch can't help, not fully anyway, I'm not 100% I can be rescued either.

I got 3 old smartswitch backup and i find a file with the imei and everything , do you think its possible to backup this files ?
You CAN recover your phone with smartswitch, there is an emergency recovery function with a IMEI and SN input option, some users who used the same threat (android 6.0.1) and has lost their efs partition reported that smartswitch worked.
I've done this procedure too for some weeks to recover my phone an everything is working fine.
possibly with root explorer
