Not sure if it has been tackled here yet, but it just took me half an hour to figure this out. So to make the world a better place, without further adieu: How-to disable your galaxy note's capacitive Hardware keys, and enable soft keys on CM10.1.
1. Go into your build.prop file with a text editor, which is found in your system folder on the root of your internal memory.
2. Go to the bottom of the file, and enter the following without the quotes "qemu.hw.mainkeys=0", save the file. (This turns on softkeys on reboot)
3. Now find the melfas_touchkey.kl file, which is found in system>usr>keylayout. (This turns off capacitive keys on reboot.) Delete all the information in that file, it should look like this before the deletion:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
4. Back out of the file explorer, go into the settings app, click advanced, move over to sensors and uncheck "Enable keys backlight" (this turns off the backlight when you touch the screen)
5. You're done, reboot your phone, and enjoy your new softkeys!
Best part about this is that the capacitive key notification lights still work!
To reverse any of this, do the exact opposite of this guide (re-enter the info in that touchkey.kl file, remove the qemu line in the build.prop and turn the capacitive backlight back on in settings)
Anyone know how to do this with the Official Jelly Bean ROM. I tried to do this with Official ICS as well with poor results.
Inputting
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
Will result in having on-screen keys but the back and multi tasking buttons are reversed.
I can find Melfas under the key layout...
And how to disable backlight of the capacitive buttons cos there isn't that option in settings.
That's strange...the screen shot didn't show my on screen keys??
It is menu, multi tasking, home and back on this screen.
Of course when back inn the home screen it reverts to three buttons: multi tasking, home and back button. I'd like it to be in this order: back, home then multi tasking

I've been using this for a while on jamies super nexus rom. You might need to use exposed because the buttons don't show on landscape in some layouts. cool to know it works on cm that means it should work on jamies chameleon os rom. I also Use jamies disable captivate lights to make full use of the nav bar.

Just out of curiosity.. what is the point of this? I've seen a bunch of people doing this, a bunch of custom roms support this. To me it just seems like you're taking up more screen space for buttons that are already built into the phone. Is there some added functionality I'm missing?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
Its mostly personal preference unless you have a device with broken hard keys. I dislike the hard buttons and disable them. I know in roms like jamies supernexus its the only way you can access the recent apps menu. You only lose like an inch of screen not that big of a deal imo.

First, you need to put the APK on your SDcard:
Download link: here
Next you need to push to your SDcard either through adb or just using USB mass storage.
Afterwards copy to system/app/ using a file manager *ES file manager or Root explorer is recommended. Root Explorer for those of you who use paid apps or ES for those of you who want a free alternative. I used Root explorer.
Here is the VERY important part, mod the permissions to the following:
Code:
Read, Write
Read
Read
Finally, just reboot and you will have it.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Code:
You can redownload the stock APK from [URL="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15069134/LatinIMEbackup.apk"]here[/URL]
and follow the rest of the guide starting after you download. It's the same universally. Also note that not all keyboard apps work well in system which is why I did it with the stock gingerbread app. Ice cream sandwich keyboards aren't too /system friendly.
it works well. I hope we can get the ICS keyboard up and running. Their is just a small visual issue with background behind the keys being white not black like in your screen shots.
I'd be happy if I could get Swiftkey Tablet up and running, but I'll give this a shot. I found the menu where you can change the colors of the default keyboard, but some other ones have added functionality that I'd like to have.

After rooting my NT I installed a thumb keyboard, it did not work. Recently I followed your instructions and installed the gingerbread keyboard.
Holding down the comma key and going into the settings I was given an option of picking the thumb keyboard and was able to pick the options I want to use with the thumb keyboard. It's working great so far.
A very nice surprise.

Op. Just try to call someone you'll see the dialer. The problem is the buttons they shrink the native resolution that will fiddle with other misc apps as well..
Also unless running custom dpi this is not very practical..
You can mod phone to never turn on lights this will make you believe they are gone..

Does this only give you the 3 buttons at the bottom or does it give you the time popup also with settings and toggles?
The navigation bar uses contextual buttons, so they'll change depending on the situation. the menu button only appears when there is a menu option. It also places the menu button in the unfortunate location if the dead zone in the very bottom right corner of the screen where a lot of people can't get the s--pen to work.
None of the Samsung Touchwiz apps work properly with the navigation bar. They don't adjust for the real estate the navigation bar uses. Also many of them don't use a contextual menu button properly so there is no way too get into menu settings in done apps. Others, like contacts, place them in bad places so they are fight to press because they are under another active button.
The solution is to replace the affected apps with modded versions, but I've had little luck with that. The ICS MMS app in the market works well though.

I knew there'd be issues but I had seen several people ask for it and it's quite a simple mod so I threw it together. I have my DPI set to 240. I also have my phone set to no lights on the capacitive buttons.
Hi all. I'm in line to get a Galaxy S III (upgrading from my Galaxy S), but I'm kinda dissapointed that Samsung went with the 2.3 button layout (menu, home, back). I'm running ICS and the awesome multitasking menu is hindered by having to hold home for 1 second to access it.
Is it possible for a custom rom to remap the menu key to make it the 4.0 multitasking key? This phone's hardware coupled with stock ICS would be amazing, and it would be even better to be able to really get that multitasking the way it should be.
Anyway, just wondering!
I would also very much like to know that.
multitasking on the menu button and menu on long press homebutton.
+1
I too reckon the buttons should be swapped
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1664041
The problem will be getting around the voice activation, so unless there are separate mappings for press, hold, longpress, then it might need some serious tinkering to fix it.
So far nobody has done it on sgs2, which has a large support forum and the same stupid button setup as sgs3, so it might take some time..
Keep bumping and keep hoping and we'll see if someone can answer our prayers. Perhaps a pm to chainfire?
Sent from my mind using telepathy..
expected the same for sgs2 ics, but it didnt happened at that time, not only that i couldnt find the value for remapping the longpress part, you can easily swap the menu with home button though
If it is not possible, i'll install the mod that shows the three classic ics onscreen buttons, nexus like.

This may sound daft but... if apps haven't got a menu button built in, how do you access options without a dedicted menu button?
I'll elaborate... ICS aimed to move the menu button from the phone to within apps themselves, so that it could be incorporated if it was needed. Now if app designers are on the ball this is great, but if you run an old app that hasn't incorporated the menu button, and the phone doesn't have one either, then what do you do?
Droid life just posted about this. Old apps that don't incorporate the action overflow function of ICS, create a black bar at the bottom of the screen with three dots for menu. Not pretty but functional.

I thought that was the case. You lose a lot of screen real estate for a single button - what a waste. This is exactly why I prefer the S3 key layout over the One X key layout. Until developers properly adopt the menu button into their apps it is valuable to have a dedicated hardware menu key. In six to twelve months, when all apps have been updated, this will be a non-issue and I will probably favour the HOX key layout. In my opinion anyway.
Edit: Just looked up that article you talked about. It outlines my opinion perfectly. I wrote a similar piece last month and sent it to all the major Android news sites. No one ran with it. Perhaps my writing style leaves a lot to be desired, lol.
Here's an example of the black bar we are talking about... yes it restores menu functionality, but it's a long way from being ideal.

I'd rather have the black menu button, I really don't mind it. My other phone is a one x. And have gotten used to it. The thing is the s3 will be the best selling android phone soon, so as long as it uses the menu key, developers will see no need to make their apps ICS native style. In fact the Samsung apps themselves aren't native ICS.

You will be surprised that Samsung's apps is actually compatible action overflow option. I successfully enabled that on my S2 and remapped the menu button to app switcher. I left a fallback option of having the menu button on long press for older apps.
I managed to do the remapping on my S3 but I am having trouble editing the framework-res to enable the action overflow button without putting the device into a boot loop.

Once installed, go to menu - Set Gesture Input and check number 2 (Nexus 4, etc.)
Reboot may be required, after that it is smooth.
Please note the OP says you must go completely to the edge of the screen to activate and can be a little tricky at first if your phone is in a case. Enjoy !!

One question: I'd like to put my app drawer as a long press of my home button, but I don't see any associated process when I look in "Activity." Does anyone know what the actual name of the app drawer is, or where to go to enable that function?

very cool find. i'm one of those folks who prefers a 'clean' home screen. thus far i've been using invisible icons located at specific locations on the screen. it works well for me but this seems to be a bit cooler and have additional features.
thanks for sharing.

I know on Apex (and I'm assuming Nova) you can set a gesture in the home screen to open the app drawer.
I always set mine to swipe up, like the old school android app drawer.
If you can still use your hardware buttons, you can also set the home button to toggle the app drawer/homescreen in most launchers.
Been using this on and off for a almost a year now. Sometimes I'm in love, other times it gets in the way.
I'm using LMT along with Swapps (free on play store), which is a perfect combination. Now, I have no reason to open the app drawer and my homescreen only contains a weather widget.
thanks
interesting app , thanks
