Silly question but what's the need to root this phone, is great as it is.
Don't get me wrong, all my past phones were rooted OG Evo, Evo 3d, Evo LTE and now DNA is stock , but rooting seems unnecessary really.
If it's not broken why fix it.
Not fixing but enhancing. The phone is great as is... Adding in a few tweaks can only make it better plus the option to have the latest without waiting on slow big red... That's why I can't wait to root this bad boy.

I agree with the op on my old phone I needed root and had mods and roms installed but this phone is so good as it is I have left it completely stock.

Being able to flash custom edits (no more wireless charging pop up!), user a custom recovery where I can make full nandroid backups, and titanium backup of all my apps are the big ones for me. Also custom splash screen (that default HTC screen lights up my whole house) as well as boot / down animations is something love. I was making custom boot animations and hacking my old moto razr era flip phone back in the day.
Oh, and we'll probably get a ported sense 5 way before it comes from Verizon.

I personally cannot tolerate the default LCD Density. I got the DNA the day it came out, and I had to wait a few days before I could root it (locked bootloader wasn't cracked yet)... Longest few days of my life.

I can't wait to get rid of the bloatware and get my inverted apps back.
I don't need ROOT I need the bootloader unlocked so I can flash custom recoveries which leads to custom ROMs.
Example:
So when HTC says oh sorry we can't upgrade you to Sense 5 because you don't have an IR blaster I say thats ok because Newtoroot already has a Sense 5 ROM that I've been using LONG before HTC decided they weren't going to upgrade me.
With a good ROM you ALMOST don't need root.

Yea, I know, and I am very thankful of that. However, in most cases (if we get an official CM ROM) we can get updates much much sooner than you can with stock. Who knows how long HTC/Verizon will make us wait for 4.2.
For me, it's wifi tethering. No way big red's getting more money from me than they already do.

I guess you have unlimited, because it doesn't cost anything if you have tiered data.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
Why do we need air? lol JK! For me part of the reason is that I love to tinker and strive to make the phone perfect, which theoretically is really impossible thus I always have to tinker! But I enjoy trying out all the cool custom ROMs and kernels to find what suits my needs best. RIght now I'm UV by 100 and UC 10 1.24 and it still runs as smooth as stock (though obviously my qudrant score has dropped from 8200 to 7100). I have unlimited data, so WiFi tether is a huge bonus. And getting rid of all the annoying icons (GPS reticle, etc). And as awesome as HTC's weather clock widget is, the transparent one in the Viper ROM is the most gorgeous widget ever to me.
All that being said, and there are not many, the DNA is an Android phone I would recommend stock to people.
I'm actually surprised its taking this long to get the ROM going on the DNA. Not that I have any idea of the amount of work that must go into doing something like this, but these guys that are much smarter than me usually have these things out very quickly. In the past it always seems like there is that group of developers that are trying to be the fist to crack/hack/unlock anything that comes out.
There are plenty of ROMs for the DNA man...check the android development section for the DNA...

From what I've gathered, it's in the works. But, the devs are having problems with the coding? I remember one discussion of the code being present in Gingerbread but not in ICS.

It was a built in feature of gingerbread, was even one of the things they demonstrated during the gingerbread presentation. The reason you may think it was special for custom roms is that most carrier stock roms disabled it for whatever reason.

The DNA is an awesome phone; however, if your phone comes with the newest update from HTC on it, be aware, there is currently software-based (free) method to unlock bootloader or modify the phone at all. Users with updated phones that were not previously unlocked have had to resort to JTAG service (something like $45 plus shipping) to have the phone S-OFF'ed (Radio S-OFF - Means you can flash whatever you please (even more so with the engineering bootloader flashed)).
If the phone prompts you for an update, DON'T DO IT! If the phone is already updated, you either wait and hope for someone to find a vulnerability, pay for JTAG service, or use the phone stock (still a good phone, but no root).
Good luck!

Root/Bootloader status:
firmware 1.x - fully blown open
firmware 2.x - locked tighter that a dolphin's butthole.
It will probably come with the 2.x software. I would recommend using the JTAG service provided here:
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/htc-droid-dna-dlx-jtag-s-off-modification-service/
Difference between a nexus and the dna... A world.
The gnex was made to open from the beginning. Running one fastboot command opened the entire floodgate, plus odin is an awesome tool for samsung devices. HTC devices have more parts that need to be cracked to have the same openess as the nexus. Right now 2.x firmware means you are running stock only (no root or anything). I'm coming from the gnex and was willing to pay for the jtag service because although I love the dev's work on this phone, I don't want to rely on them for everything.
Hope this helps.
Alright now what about things like supercid or HTC dev. Also if we can unlock the boot loader then why is s-off important. Or can we not unlock the boot loader on 2.xx

Like other post, i would say know that you will not have root for a bit and cm 10.1 is not done yet...but will be soon. You can go for JTAG or stick with stock or use nova launcher temporarily. The battery life is pretty decent but nothing crazy 4 hours of screen time-ish on stock. i usually get enough battery for 1 day and a few hours. Oh, fastboot will prevent a full restart of your phone so might want to disable that...and yea just look around settings. there are ways to increase battery and stuff. for example, there is a settings in wifi that allows it to auto turn off and use data unless you start using your phone. I think its a great device even through its a bit big for my taste, and i don't like stock much. Hope you enjoy your phone! I can't wait to get root and cm 10.1 on my phone. ^_^

Same here. I love CM and AOSP/AOKP, but I tire of them pretty quick. I honestly don't understand the HTC Sense hate some people have. If it was that bad then everyone wouldn't be trying to find widgets that looked like the sense widgets on CM/AOSP. Sense is a really nice looking UI and their widgets are second to none.
I'm pretty much decided on sending out my DNA to be JTAG'd. How long can I expect to be without a phone? I think i'll be stuck using my rezound with just google voice.
So I've been debating if to root or not for a couple of days now, I just got the phone last week, so I'm still getting used to sense 5.
Now heres what I ask myself, knowing that the development for our specific device is a bit slow, and flashing one of the international roms will make us loose some key features (like wifi calling).
It has me thinking what would be the real benefit to root out device right now?

Gotta have Root for Me
There are alot of reasons for root for some users, and for some not so much. It is always one of the first things I do. You can have root and keep a stock ROM it just gives you options, and when you get bored with stock these amazing cooks on XDA always have something brewing for you to check out. Some of my reasons to root specific to the HTC One on TMO.
Flash a writable kernel so my system files are now writable. Currently using Bulletproof.
DoubleTap2Wake so I don't have to bang on the IR blaster all day. HTC buttons don't like to be used, they always end up failing or plain falling out.
got rid of the 3 button menu bar and now have the HTC Logo as the menu button. Sweeet!
Makes it easier to back up and restore. I use several devices so I can Box my Titanium files and quickly be in the same position across whatever device I decide to use at the time.
Customization. blue % battery mod, transparent app drawer, transparent blinkfeed clock. I can do custom icons and get rid on annoying ones likd NFC or GPS.
The most important is to beat the stupid enterprise settings on exchange. I have to have email on my device, but i cant stand using a PIN or Pattern. solution=root!

WiFi calling is pretty important to me, mainly because where I work I have zero signal but do have access to wifi (I'm right underneath the access point, which is nice).
Some people depend on it at home as well, such as my boss' son.
As far as root goes....I haven't rooted yet, I just haven't felt the need to.
Only reason I rooted was to use my MOGA Pro as a regular gamepad. Now I'm running rooted stock ROM and cruising through FF7 in an emulator during my train commute
I am rooted running the ARHD 7.4 ROM with WiFi calling. It works great. Rooting allows me to use titanium backup for all my apps. Also making onandroid backups. And lots of little changes. Remove bloated apps, etc

So my question is which ROMs are compatible with this ota? Basic question I'm sure. I came from the Razr and the kernel had to match so I assume its the same here? Anyone willing to shed some light on this for me would be greatly appreciated.

Any rom you want as long as it is in the VZW Note 2 threads can be flashed ours arent locked down by what update we are on because our bootloader is unlocked where it isnt on Moto phones. AOSP roms require AOSP kernels as TW roms require TW kernels. The roms come with kernels though so that isnt something tk worry about unless you I want to.
The only thing to remember is if you go to a 4.2 rom and want t I go back to 4.1 you have to flash a downgrade zip so your SD card doesnt become corrupted. You can find the downgrade zip in the Official CM 10.1 thread in the OP.
Check out Droidstyles guide in Android Development, its a sticky, it explains quite a bit and would ne helpful to you I think.

Thanks for the info. Exactly the answers and info I was looking for. I just flashed CleanROM and went through the flashing process. When it got to the end and said finish to reboot it just turned off and wouldnt turn back on. Couldn't get to recovery or download mode. I had to pull the battery and then turn it on. It went straight to the new ROM though without a hitch. Is that a normal part of the flashing procedure on the N2? The battery pull I mean, or did I miss something?

Thats not a normal thing to happen, but it does happen occasionally. As long as it boots up after the battery pull I wouldnt be too worried by it. I have had it happen to me before and after the battery pull I experienced no issues whatsoever.

CleanROM's good. It was the first ROM I flashed when I got my Note II too.
Eventually though, you may want to switch to something more feature-rich like Jelly Beans, which is what I'm rocking now. The features it adds are pretty awesome and you get full touchwiz functionality (S-Pen and the like) with the look of AOSP.
DL'ing Jelly Beans now. Gotta make a new TiBu before flashing though. Will give it a go shortly. My wife fusses at me sometimes cause on my old phone (Razr) and on this one I am always flashing different ROMs. She especially hates it when she calls and my phone goes directly to voicemail cause I am in recovery flashing a ROM or kernel.

Hi all, I'm feeling like a n00b on the Note too, and really appreciate the help all of you seem to be willing to share with each other. I'm not new to modding phones, recently I've been through an S3, DNA, RAZR HD and M, and even another Note 2. I made the mistake of swapping the Note 2 for an iPhone 5, and regretted it about thirty seconds later. Now that's my wife's phone, and due to the grace of another (local) xda member, I'm back rockin' the Note 2. This time around in looking forward to getting into some serious flashing and tweaking to get the most from the hardware. I've decided this is Verizon's best phone at the moment, with everything I need.
Don't worry, you're not alone in having a wife who gets annoyed at flashing and tweaking. Happens to me all the time, but I use the excuse it's one of the few hobbies that I have which doesn't involve the rest of the family and I need a bit of alone time. It kind of works as an excuse until the point where I need to use it again.

I like jedi X rom...I got 3 days off my battery with just the right settings...my recommendation is to not mess with the per app dpi for the settings app because now I'm stuck without a settings app and about to switch roms...just about any rom will work as long as it's for your carrier... Best of luck!

Beans is the best! photosphere camera (page 1 of forum) works great with build 16! Check it out! Also, I agree about Jedi: definitely magic battery settings. Enjoy your new hobby! My wife is the same way.

It was also said that this update could potentially be very difficult. Im guessing they will realease an RUU and call it a day. Will still require rooting the phone and installing the rom
Why haven't you deleted your freaking account yet? We don't care about your stupid opinion.

Have an HTC One coming next week and the idea of being able to replace it with stock Android makes it potentially much sweeter. I love the Nexus 4 performance and it does everything I want but I can't get over how nice the One is every time I hold it so I had to pick one up to try it out as my daily driver. Had a One X awhile back running Viper ROM which was very nice so I would imagine I can just run with the stock Sense until stock Android is available. Saves me from buying the Googled version of the One if HTC will be providing an update.
I could never give up Highlights & Zoe.
I'm fine with Sense. Just need root and I can do whatever I need.

I am enjoying Zoe and highlights myself. I love using it with my family and sharing it on my 60" HDTV with the Media Link HD.
