I have rooted my EVO LTE using HTC Dev and S-OFF with Lazy Panda. I applied the De-odexed STOCK 1.22.651.3 ROM and 1.05.11.0606 radio. When I toggle LTE off, I have no 3G data, but with LTE on data works fine. With LTE enabled, "Network Signal Info" reports net type as EHRPD. With LTE toggled off, net type is listed as EVDO Rev A, with a data state of disconnected.
Can anyone help me here?
How are you even able to toggle LTE off?

I DO realize that leaving the phone in LTE/CDMA mode will solve my problem. But for battery life reasons, I prefer to leave my phone in CDMA mode only until LTE is "switched on".

HTC has already said there would be no difference with lte/cdma being on. It's not like there's two different radios on at the same time. Cdma and lte are both built in the same chip. Just leave it alone...no need for the tinkering.

Something tells me the "fix" for my 3G data problem will be wiping my phone and reloading the 1.13.651.1 RUU and waiting for the bugs to be worked out.
Call Sprint and have them reset your data connection.

There's no difference in battery UNLESS you have LTE connection. LTE will drain the battery a lot faster.
OP, if you don't have LTE, just keep it on. As long as you aren't using it, you won't drain any faster.

I suppose I COULD leave the data connection to CDMA/LTE, but that kind of defeats my initial question. I think I might go for a drive and see if it's perhaps just the local tower causing me issues, or if this "bug" persists outside my home turf.

Did you find a fix?
I have found that after I update my profile this happens to me also. Same thing 2 phones rooted. or not rooted, s-off or not s-off. Don't matter.
Just switch to CDMA only if you updated on LTE/CDMA. Or switch to LTE/CDMA if you updated on CDMA only. This works for me, don't know why but it does. Every time! Also have found that after some time I can switch back and all is well.
Hope this helps

Well it's nice to know I'm not the only one with problems. As the saying goes, misery loves company.
As for now, I'm thinking I might just run run the RUU and go back to stock 1.13.651.1 (unrooted) for a while and see how things fare. I can "deal" without root access for a few weeks, and who knows, maybe by then the DEV community will have found a way to S-OFF the new 1.22.651.3 OTA update. I'm in the greater Boston market and we're due to have LTE switched on VERY soon. I'll save a Nandroid backup of my current s-off/rooted 1.22.651.3 in case I want to visit this in the future.

Ok so with my CDMA only & LTE/CDMA dilemma behind me, my phone is now switching the 3G on to send and receive MMS messages. This is the first time I've seen this with my EVO LTE. Previously my MMS messages were sent and received via WiFi, which was noticeably faster. DO you have any tips to help me in this scenario?
Justin
I have had the same issue and haven't been able to resolve it.
I had 3G up until last Tuesday in Minnesota and talked with Sprint. They tried to reset my phone and then tried to do the hands free activation and it failed. I flew to Dallas for vacation, turned on the phone and it activated in less than 30 seconds.
Returned back from Dallas and still no 3G in Minnesota (Minneapolis and Central MN).
I do have my MSL, but any tips on how to get 3G data back again?
So my HTC EVO 4G LTE has been treating me very nicely.. great battery life and CM10 is smooth as ever.. the kernel I have is great and I get a 2.0 GHz overclock without problems. The weirdest issue has been haunting me lately. On CyanogenMod 10, I am unable to use the 4G LTE service that is located on a tower about 150 feet away from me at this moment. The issue is that while the phone connects to the service and I can call and text, for some reason data never works. I get 4 bars that I could only get from this tower, and looking in the phone information section of *#*#4636#*#*, I see that the tower shows up as LTE. Now it used to be that on Sense, I could turn on airplane mode, wait about a minute, and then connect to 4G LTE.. but now not even airplane mode can get me connected to it. There should be no reason that the phone can't connect to the tower because the signal, when connected, is very very strong. Does anyone know of any potential fixes for this issue? It's been haunting me that I'm located here in Dallas with a 4G LTE phone on Sprint next to a known working 4G LTE tower and people around me with Samsung Galaxy S3s and other 4G LTE phones are connected but I can't. Thanks for your help in advance.
By the way, I did search the forums and surprisingly no one has an issue similar to this in any of the topics that I checked.
Bump.

I installed the new radio from the OTA onto my phone and I thought it'd fix the problems but the problem was only temporarily fixed when I reflashed CM10. 4G LTE worked for a few hours.. but then after I went into a building, the signal dropped to 1 bar, turned on 3g, and call quality became utter crap.
I would post in deck's thread but I'm not sure the issue is specific to CM10.. I used a sense rom and for the first few hours of use it worked great and I would get strong LTE signal.. but after that I seemed to again be able to connect to the tower that's transmitting 4G LTE and in the network settings it would show up as LTE, but no data connection could be established.

Yes, I did full wipes between roms including factory reset and system wipes. Only my SD cards are left unwiped.

They should have recognized it if it was an error. So calling sprint won't do much. There's an app called network in google play store. Has the option to switch to different bands, or a lot more than any stock program will let u switch to.
Try switching from CDMA auto to Evdo/LTE or the other LTE options and roaming bands they have on there and see if it helps. Hopefully someone with a fix will see this thread soon enough. Only other thing I can think of is the ##4636# (digits may be wrong)and switch some settings in there.

Nothing of the sort fixes the issue.. I'm gonna try reflashing radios.
I'm on 1.15, S-On, HTCDev unlocked, CM10.I have the same issues.
When i reflash the kernel, LTE will work for several hours, and then I get the gray bars of doom. Oddly, I still get a data connection with some apps (Reddit Is Fun, etc.), even though the phone shows no data. It's been so frustrating that I've considered going back to sense...

Yeah that's exactly what happens to me.. and no matter my attempts to airplane mode the phone refuses to connect to 4G LTE data after a few days of reflashing.. So odd.
Just clean flashed deck's most recent build from IRC (9/19?) and I'm having the same problem as before. This time it didn't even make it an hour before LTE went away.
And after searching around, apparently we're the only people in the entire world experiencing this issue.

I.E. His statement still stands because we would still be the only people in the world having this problem..
I am honestly stumped as to how to fix this.. Sprint support can't help and I sat in the irc and people would tell me to force lte mode in network settings.. Doesn't work.. Because even though I get data connection.. I then lose the ability to call and text.
I tried paranoid, cm10, and aokp. I couldn't get lte on any of them. And phone calls were at max volume, distorting the speaker even, no matter where the actual volume indicator is.
Went back to a sense based rom and no problems.

I am having the exact same issue as you with the "Greg bars of death". I had good consistent 4g at one point in early September (possible unofficial 9/6 build based on saved speed tests) but not since then. I have also found that having LTE off gives me more reliable 3G data.

Join the club... it's the typical LTE connection issue with the EVO LTE. Its not your phone or updates. Even a 100% stock EVO LTE with all the updates has this issue.
I really like this phone but want to make sure that the LTE connection issues are able to be fixed with a software update. I hope Sprint isn't BS'ing on this. I have a couple of days to return the phone and want to make sure this is fixable before deciding to keep it.
Anyone know if the Sprint rep who said it's a software issue is telling the truth or BS?
At heart it is a good radio. No reason it shouldn't work as it's supposed to. So, the majority of the issue is software. And it is fixable. Maybe just as good as S3 and iPhone 5 LTE reception?
The big question here is if Sprint will actually fix it this time. Know that there were fixes for LTE in 2 previous ota's. To what extent they worked on it before, idk. Thinking that this time is make or break it.
So, the answer is wait and see. U can get out of contract if LTE doesn't work for u though. It's apart of your service plan. Gonna require persistence on your part to get out after the 14 days is up, but u can do it.
If I were u and needed a good LTE capable phone, I'd go with the S3. Because at this point, it is up in the air if it will receive LTE like it should in the near future.
Correction first update was wifi, second was lte lol
Hope so. Has to be software related since both this and the s3 have the same radio. And, since the airplane mode on/off trick gets it working, I'm lead to believe its software.

Airplane mode trick???
I really hope they can fix this. I decided to keep the phone after looking at the S3 screen and build quality I just couldn't switch. I really love the screen on this!! It is just as good as my wife's iPhone 5 in color reproduction. The S3 is nice but don't like PenTile as I can notice it and I don't like it when whites have a blue color to it.
The Evo LTE has the same SoC as the S3. If the Evo was having hardware problems with LTE so would the S3, but that is not the case (according to what I have been able to look up). Therefore it can be concluded that the LTE issues are software and not hardware.

AKA Airplane Mode Dance
If you are in an LTE area and your phone is stuck on 3G, or if your phone is on LTE and it drops back down to 3G, then toggling Airplane Mode ON and back OFF will make the radio scan and re-latch to LTE.
That's the problem with our EVOs, it's an LTE threshold and handoff problem.
I live right on the edge of LTE coverage, so my phone will handoff to 3G because it decides the LTE signal is too weak. The problem is, in my area a "weak" LTE signal is MUCH faster than a strong 3G signal. If I go into my radio options and choose "LTE only" it will hold LTE signal all day long. So the signal is there, albeit weak.
What we need is a software fix that will change our radio's signal threshold so that it will prioritize a weaker LTE signal over 3G.
I'm tired of doing the airplane mode dance. If LTE is available, I want my EVO to latch on and stay on it even if it's weak.

Thanks guys! Installing app now and have the data code saved for a rainy day as well
Edit : after switching to lte only, I get no data (voice or sms) but im able to run a speed test using 4g. I live in L.A. but I connect to an Albuquerque, New Mexico server I'm not sure what else I'm to do to enable lte only and keep data
It's NOT true for me that switching it to LTE only will keep it connected. I still only keep the connection for about 10 seconds and then it goes back to 3G. My understanding is that option in both *#*#4634#*#* and ##DATA# is "preferred mode." It will drop back to 3G.
And I know for sure that Sprint and HTC have an open ticket on this issue of aquiring and keeping an LTE signal. They will eventually get a fix out for it.
I used the network tool post earlier and set mine to cdma/lte... So I get 4g and voice/text.. no evdo. Which is fine by me because evdo sucks anyway lol.
Works great I now can keep 4g in my house like my gfs gs3 and not switch back to crap-do

Hi everyone, I'm new to AT&T and HTC. I'm confused on how the networks should switch.
The area I'm in doesn't have LTE yet so lets leave this out of this
I'm having a signal issue at work. Where I sit I get 3 sometimes 2 bars (-97 to -101dBM) on the 4G network. But data doesnt work. When I use the browser it say error connecting to network and I when I run speed test it either doesnt find a tower or just sits on ping test.
When I look at mobile network type it keeps flipping between HSDPA and HSPAP. I've never see the phone change to the edge or G network unless my battery is almost dead.
Does this sound right or could I have a messed up radio? It does work great when the signal is in the -70s.
Please help. Wondering if my phone is messed up. It is still stock, locked bootloader, unrooted at the moment.

To turn off LTE, open dialer, type in "*#*#4636#*#*", then click "phone info", you will see "GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto" in the middle of the setting page. Switch to "WCDMA preferred" to use only 3G without LTE. You can also choose "GSM" to use only edge network.
Is there not an App or Widget that can toggle LTE and Edge networks?
Hi everyone,
I'm new to the Note, but definitely not new to Android or XDA.
I've got the phone "unlocked" via the radio trick here: http://str8pt.blogspot.com/2013/06/unlock-simfree-method-for-galaxy-note.html
I've rooted it, and have tried a few different ROMs with different radios.
The Blaze radio (and others) I mention are from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679722
I am in Melbourne, FL in case location makes any difference.
Here's what I am seeing:
CyanogenMOD 10.1.3 - using Blaze ICS radio I am getting only EDGE speeds. Using "Official TMO ICS Radio" (I'm guessing it's the one from the TMO Note?) , I get NO connectivity.
Stock 4.1.2 - using Blaze ICS radio I am getting 4G, however the signal meter is totally empty as if there's just enough signal to register connectivity but not enough to register a single bar. Download speeds are abysmal in comparison to other TMO phones I've used here - I am seeing downloads at around 1.5MB - other phones are 6, 7, even 8 MB.
My question are as follows:
Using CyanogenMod, should I be using the i717 version? Or the TMO Note version? Is there anything I can do with ANY particular radio to get better than EDGE?
Using the Stock ROM (or a variant), is there are a way to get the signal cluster to function properly? Any way to get better download speeds?
I read that the TMO 4.0.4 stock ROM image can be installed via ODIN and apparently it works correctly (if I am reading correctly) - would the TMO 4.1.2 stock ROM image be installed via ODIN and work as well? (If I can even find a full download of it?)
Should I expect to have to re-flash the radio each time with each ROM? From what I've seen, if I don't, I lose any ability to get 4G until I flash it again. I'd be stuck on EDGE.
Thanks so much guys! I've searched and read till my eyes are crossing and not finding the answers I need. I hope that with the experience that can be found in this forum maybe I can get where I need to be!
Thanks again!

I recently obtained an I717 too, unlocked it, and got it functioning with my tmobile prepaid plan. I'm still on gingerbread rom and using KID radio with decent success. just 4G , using WCDMA band 1700 (*#2263#). I get consistent decent speeds but not LTE.
The hands down best modem to use is UCMB4 - Google it. But it can cause problems with some jelly bean ROMs.
If you want jb more than anything, play with modems. If you want speed AND stability, go jellybean sandwich or black star X with the aforementioned modem.
If you want WiFi calling download skeleton key.
Ucmb4 with any of those three and the proper APN will get you LTE as fast as it's offered in your area

Hi Anthony820,
I'm currently running your Skeleton Key ROM - not bad at all! But definitely want to try to get CyanogenMod or PACman JB running.
I'll give the UCMB4 radio a shot this evening !
When I had service with TMO (via Straight Talk) I had the best luck with UVLG3.

Using which ROM?
I've got CM 10.1.3 for i717 installed right now, going through and testing each and will post results.

At the time I was running CM 10.1 nightlies.
Uvlg3, if I recall, will get you good down speed, but mediocre up. Otherwise, it's a solid choice and may be more cooperative with jb builds.

Looks like you're right - here's just 4 radios that I just tested:
UCMB4 - EDGE only
UVLG3 - 3G/DC(WTF??)/H+ 6.01Mbps up/1.07 Mbps down
UVLE1 - Phone freezes, locks on black screen, had to pull battery
ICSBLAZE - 3G/DC/H+ Network communication issues message when running speedtest.
By the way, what the heck is "DC" on the network indicator where 3G or H/H+ normally is? I've never seen that before!

I believe It stands for dual channel.
By the way, just checked and CM's WiFi tethering is working as well - nice!
Not sure what I did differently this time but this evening the signal indicator is showing real signal strength, equivalent to what I was seeing on another phone on CM.

Good to hear. I believe not seeing any signal strength is a known issue specifically with the Blaze modem.
Make sure you're changing your APN from epc.* to fast.t-mobile.com

I'm guessing that would get me LTE if it's available in my area?
I just switched over to it and only got EDGE...

If you're on a modem that'll work with LTE, yep. Otherwise HSPA or Edge.
Make sure, I forget and my Note no longer has service, that the top option is set under Network Type or whatever it is. Network Mode? I don't know, you'll figure it out. The thing that lets you pick between GSM, WCDMA etc..etc..

Ok, I got it figured out. I am on the FAST APN and set to WCDMA/LTE . I'm on 3G/H+ here in the house now - will see how it goes when I head out tomorrow.
Either way, I think it's time to make a backup - it's running marvelously and doing everything I would expect it to!
NOTE: Newest PAC ROM (4.3) running smoothly with UVLG3 modem on T-Mobile without issue
[EDIT]
Scratch that - it worked great until I did the first reboot - then it wouldn't boot up again, even with a battery pull.

I went ahead and flashed UCMB4 and was showing 4g lte after reboot. my phone info setting says WCDMA preferred (it shows no LTE option at all ) and the *#2263# menu setting says "automatic". on the fast.t-mobile.com apn
I use UCMD3 and get LTE almost everywhere. Hellybean is a pretty good ROM, try it out!
