Can you flash a custom kernel based on the newest source with a ROM still on the 3.15 base?

You can flash some of the older Elemental kernels before v3.0 I'm pretty sure

Yeah, should be fine...rom devs usually recommend using the kernel that came with the roms base for best performance, but it will still work.

I switched to Operation Jellybean from MeanBean last night and the theming on the ROM is killer. However being so used to having long press back to sleep and camera to wake, and then getting used to to swipe to sleep/wake I really really don't like turning the phone off and on with the power button. LOL Made a Nandroid and flashed the kernel back to Elemental 3.2 and things have been meshing just fine all day. Haven't really put the phone down yet and haven't had any issues.

Overclocking stock/notification bar

So I recently flashed the OTA Rom and I noticed I can't overclock it, is there something I can do? Do I need to flash a kernel or something, also is it possible to change the top bar because I don't like the stock version, like change the theme but I don't want to change the launcher at the bottom . Sorry for the noob questions lol
Best advice would be to flash this ROM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227075 Droidth3ory makes awesome roms. This rom is based off the latest GB build as well. It also will include a kernel for overclocking into it. Also, he has an app called the "Candy Stor3" in his rom, which has theming options to it, if you want to change how your phone looks.
To answer your question though, with OTA roms, there aren't custom kernels loaded into the rom, because OTA roms are what is "out of box" state. It will come with the manufacturers kernel. Even though the version GB version is updated, I believe a Sense kernel should work with your rom.
Awesome, thank you so much
I put together a rom based on theory's rom listed above, then flashed a sense kernel for overclocking, n it seems to break wifi. So I'm not sure if u can o/c the new 2.10 base yet, may need a new kernel

You obviously tried dreamkernel. Imoseyon has the WiFi fixed. Neither have been at all diligent about keeping their kernels current so there are basically no custom kernels that are fully functional with any ROM base newer than 2.07. The lone exception would be Ziggy's, but you'd have to strip that out of Gingeritis or synergy.

[NOOB] I need help getting back or gen help.

I wanted to root for a while, just looking for a rom that looks and feels stock, but has better battery and all..
well I followed
watch?v=-hPSrzRqtX4&feature=player_detailpage (cannot post link as I'm new)
and successfully got to supra rom.. well I don't like the vanilla 5 screen non sense homescreen, though I do like the crt visuals lol...
Anyways, I can't even use my wifi, it just says error, and I NEED wifi, I use it at home non-stop as I have horrible service.
Well I tried to switch to viperRom - I did the reset in bootloader, then full wipe, then cache and all that..
well, once I installed the viperRom .zip, I started my phone and its just the same as before... I can't switch roms! I know this is prolly some nooby thing I don't understand but I've been searching all night and just want to get everything working and need to sleep haha
any help GREATLY APPRECIATED
What do you mean about not being able to switch roms?

I figured out that I was trying to flash to viperRom using only the update
I'm now on viper, with stock kernel and still cannot get wifi to work, any ideas? Any searching turns up kernel issues, and to revert to stock.. well I'm on stock kernel

unless you're having hardware wifi issues, which the best way to determine would be through running a stock rom and stock kernel, my guess is you have a kernel and rom mismatch issue.
the way htc has their kernels compiled includes two things: kernel and modules.
the modules include a wifi module.
if you flash a kernel and then load a rom, chances are the rom might overwrite either the kernel, the kernel modules, or both.
the best way to avoid this scenario is to flash the rom first and then flash the kernel. the kernel flash will load the kernel itself and its modules. i.e. if you're on a rom you want to stay with now, flash the kernel again and then wifi should work.
hope that helps!
Thank you, o figured this out myself, but you were right lol I was using 2.3.3 roms on 2.3.4

Ok, sorry to be noobish, but how would I flash the Viper kernel? I'm only familiar with flashing zipped flashable kernels.
Just like you normally flash roms and kernels.
you can pull out the boot.img that comes in the viper2.0 rom.
I've been hearing people having screen tearing issues with evilz kernel and viper2.0.
IMHO i think the stock rom kernels are always optimized to the point where their battery life is great.

Yeah, that's why I was making sure to find the easiest way to get back. Some people seemed to be getting good results from EvilZ, but maybe I'll just stick with the one with the ROM.
Thanks for the help!

Non stock kernels can add features way beyond stock. Not just battery but other things. I am a believer in kernels, you just got to find one that works with your setup.
Now that said evilz didn't agree with my phone, hoping to find some time to start work on a new kernel.

[Q] Camera broken after flashing Beastmode RC7 kernel

I just tried to open my stock Camera, and it immediately force closes.
The only thing I can think of that is causing this, is that I recently flashed a new kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1800399 - ([Kernel][Sense][Dec 08] Beastmode-LTE Sweep2Wake | MpDecision [Linaro][Linux 3.0.56])
Now, I'm running stock rom 1.13.651.3 with latest updated "Firmware" - http://themikmik.com/showthread.php...wel-Firmware-Collection-Latest-3-16-651-3-OTA - (3.16.651.3 JellyBean OTA - LATEST)
"Full" Firmware zip
Includes Radio 1.12.11.1210, PRI 2.97_003 & a few other smaller updates.
NOT INCLUDED IN ZIP: HBOOT.img, recovery.img (stock), boot.img & tp_SYN3202.img*
*tp_SYN3202.img is touch panel firmware, which affects interaction with the touch screen. This latest firmware is ONLY compatible with ROMs that use the 3.16.651.3 boot.img/kernel, and TWRP Recovery version 2.4.1.0 or newer. If you plan on using an older base ROM, an AOSP ROM, or older version of recovery, then you should NOT install the below standalone file (as it will cause your touch screen to be unresponsive). However if you would like to run a 3.16-base ROM for a while to test it out and then go back to AOSP or the old base, you can downgrade to the 3.15.651.16 tp firmware from that section below PRIOR to changing to a different (non-3.16-base) ROM.

Has anyone else experienced this? I really use my cers on a daily basis. Sidenote: I know for a fact that the camera worked before flashing the new kernel. Also, I tried an aftermarket camera app, and it doesn't show anything in the background; just blackness.
PLEASE HELP ME FIX THIS! I really love the new kernel and don 't want to uninstall the kernel _just_ for a working camera.
Thanks in advance! - kal
Make sure you downloaded the right kernel. It appears that there are several kernels posted-one for the older base, which you are still on, and then others for the 2.13 base, which is slightly newer. Flash the one for the older base (at the top of post #2). If that doesn't fix it, try a different kernel altogether, as some kernels behave differently with some phones.
U can't use that kernel as its a ics kernel and ur runing jb

Look again. He's on ICS SOFTWARE, not Jelly Bean.
The advice is free....the bandwidth, not so much
Why not just re-flash the rom
Ohhh I assumed that since he updated the firmware to the new jb firmware he was running jb

[Q] Ignorant Kernel Questions

So I've tried a bunch of different ROMs (CleanROM, Alliance, Beans, CM, OMNI, "Stock", probably more), but I've never really understood kernels. It seems some custom ROMs have a kernel built in (or several to choose from via Aroma), while others do not. Right now I'm running AOKP (4.4.2) with the kernel from OMNI (3.0.64-OMNI-g5f47648), presumably because that was the previous ROM I flashed with a kernel. I'm not too concerned with customization, more with stability.
I've been having a few minor bugs and crashes and I'd like to try perhaps the stock kernel to see if that might help, but I have some questions:
1) Does it matter when flashing a kernel whether the ROM is TW or AOSP?
2) Are there multiple versions of kernels that correspond with the Android version of the ROM?
3) What's the best/easiest way to flash a kernel, presumably through the custom recovery like a ROM?
4) Where can I find the stock kernel? I found this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2610870) with the stock MJ9 kernel, but going back to my first two questions I'm not sure if it would work with my current ROM.
Thanks ahead of time for any insight anyone can provide.

1) Does it matter when flashing a kernel whether the ROM is TW or AOSP?
Yes. TW and AOSP kernels are different.. The only one, that I believe, that can be used with both is Devil kernel for Dual Booting
2) Are there multiple versions of kernels that correspond with the Android version of the ROM?
Yes. Usually every version of android that gets updated.. the kernel does as well
3) What's the best/easiest way to flash a kernel, presumably through the custom recovery like a ROM?
Yes you can flash kernels through a custom recovery. Most of the time they are included with the Rom that you flash. A lot of the custom ones out have flashable zip for you to flash them through a recovery.
4) Where can I find the stock kernel? I found this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2610870) with the stock MJ9 kernel, but going back to my first two questions I'm not sure if it would work with my current ROM.
No this will NOT work with a AOSP rom.. The kernel will be specific to that ROM and every other TW 4.3 ROM, but NOT AOSP

Thanks for the explanations, that helps tremendously. I'm confused now, however, because several people on the AOKP thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2453566) claim to be on "stock kernel". Is there a stock kernel for AOSP that I'm missing?

Well that's what I thought, but why then would I be using an OMNI kernel (3.0.64-OMNI-g5f47648) when I have flashed the last three AOKP nightly ROMs that have come out? Or am I missing something here?

Maybe he uses that kernel.. AOSP kernels, I believe are pretty similar.. I may be wrong, I am by NO MEANS a kernel guru..I would open you zip of your ROM (AOKP) and take a peak.. if there is a boot.img than it flashes a kernel.. and if your says OMNI then thats the kernel the dev has used..

If I'm on the stock rom and want to go back to the original kernel can I just restore the boot img in recovery?

Thank you sir. It worked just fine.
I have a noob question, I'm currently using n3bula 3.9 custom rom and it's been running fine for a while. I noticed that users chose the agni kernel whereas I chose the stock one. So my question is, is it possible to flash just the kernel from recovery without losing my data? I've spent so much time and effort customizing my phone, therefore, I just want to change the kernel. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I would think that as long as it doesn't break anything you should be fine. Probably do a backup first if you're worried about it.
Thanks for the response Michael, however, that was the response I was dreading! I'm actually worried I'll lose my WhatsApp and Viber accounts because even if I backed up my data, I'd still have to register my old WhatsApp and Viber numbers all over again which I don't have anymore.. ??
