Kernel Problems - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

I've found the old flashable Odin copy of Gingerbread, and I've flashed it with the default kernel being inside. However, after the process completed I still have 6.0 JB kernel. I cannot remove it.. anyone can help me out?
(This might be the problem I had with system dump and flashing previously)

Zip or tar?

Try using a PIT when flashing. That will make sure Odin maps partitions correctly.

Pushed with Heimdall, and honestly had no luck. There is about 20 different things I tried to get this working and none of them worked correctly. Giving up as of now.

I've always been able to flash Entropy's kernel (assuming yr on US) with CWM, even when coming down from ICS/JB. Try that if you haven't yet tried

[ODIN]ED03 ROM/Kernel/Recovery

Much like I did for ED01, I created a new Odin for the OTA ED03 update. Once again, this doesn't include the modem, just the base system, kernel, and recovery. It will also perform a factory reset, and is currently Odin only, I'll create a CWM flashable package at some point as well. Enjoy. This should be fully stock unrooted as I was only temp-rooted when I created the image.

Could you provide file hashes? I've had corrupted download with very small errors which was not detected until I use odin.

Umm, if it fails verification in Odin, it doesn't flash. How is allowing Odin to check it harder than checking it manually that you wouldn't just allow Odin to work as it is designed to do?
ok I flashed it! I don't know what's different but it's working perfectly.
Im using the latest otb kernel the latest cwm (in purple) and the ec01 radio.
I even rooted it and uninstalled all the annoying aps. Think I'm going to use this rom for now. Thanks imnuts!!!!
Edit: it just feels good to be "up-to-date" lol

I'm very often in places with no connection of any kind whatsoever, its also when I'm between time waiting and had the time for things like odin.
If the file is corrupted, then I would have to abort and wait for the next unknown available free time period to repeat all over again.
I don't see any files on the forums to attain the ED03 modem
Odin has a built in MD5, and created the file to support it. If you don't have a connection or time to flash via Odin, how is having the checksum going to help you? No connection and the checksum is bad, you can't download the file again. No time for Odin, and you probably don't have time to generate and verify a checksum because in the time that it'd take you to verify it, you'd be part way through flashing in Odin.

That's because there isn't a file available.
If you want the radio, you'll need to Odin back to DL09 or DI01 and go through the OTA process

You should use this -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044474
Since there will not be any data wipe in that procedure as you already are on DL09 you should be able to update to ED01 without being stuck at the language menu.
Are there actually any benefits
to the ED03 update as opposed to ED01?

[Q] Help! 0.00 internal memory and can't mount SD Card in CWM

I am completely stuck trying to get my Fascinate back to stock and i have read through and tried everything i have seen on the issue execpt the How to completely remove voodoo lagfix because I cannot down load the original.mbr file.
Let me see if I can sum up the issues I am having on my phone;
I mistakenly flashing I9000 which led to a soft bricked phone. Since then I have spent the past seven days researching and trying to figure out how to get it fixed.
Phone shows 0.00 internal memory
Can't mount SD Card in CWM3-Voodoo-Blue E: Unable to mount sdcard so i can't install update.zip or even install a new kernel
Permission denied ... E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
While I don't remember flashing a voodoo kernel using Odin, I am getting all of the same errors. I can't get CWM to do anything with the SD Card
Phone stats:
Firmware 2.2.1
Baseband version S:i500.04 V.EB01
Kernel version 2.6.32.9
Build number SCH.I500.EB01
I can only get the following to run on my phone, EC10SC292x_DXC.tar.md5 from Droid Forums (Super Clean version 2.9.2 - EB01/EC10 Froyo leak root+Froyo Clockworkmod with MALWARE protection).
This runs great except for the 0.00 memory and unable to mount SD card errors in CWM recovery.
I have tried everything out there with no luck to include flashing back to stock using the threads on this site and others and Odin gets stuck at the movinand file install and fails. Everything except the thread How to completely remove Voodoo Lagfix over.
The link for the orginal.mbr is broken and I can't find the file anywhere.
Does anyone have the original.mbr file they could post for download.
Odin back to stock ED05 using the pit file and repartition. If that isn't enough Odin back to DI01 using the pit to repartition.

Are you using Odin with the battery pulled? Sometimes that helps. Basically hold the volume down button when plugging in the USB cable and it will still use the download mode. If that doesn't help maybe the download is corrupt so try redownloading.

Yes, Odin with battery out. at least fourth time re-downloading all the stock files. It seem that the only files that make it through Odin are then custom ROMs. All of the stock downloads fail at the movinand install point.
Have you tried a different USB cable? Also what version of ODIN are you using? The most reliable one I've used is 1.3.

Yes on the usb cable, 4 to be exact and odin 1.3 and 1.7. 1.3 has been the most stable.
I think i have tried everything across the board and like I said the only files that make it through Odin and pass have been the custom roms, anything that say stock locks up in Odin.
I would try the full GeeWiz Rom then with the pit file with Repartition checked. I'm not sure if it contains the movinand.bin file or not. If not then try GeeWiz with just the Rom & Kernel; that doesn't wipe data.
Also have you tried wiping the SDCard in either CWM or GeeWiz recovery?
If that doesn't help, I'm out of suggestions, and unfortunately I don't have the mbr file so I'm no help there.

Try re-flashing Clockwork Recovery in Odin, or even a different copy from Times_Infinity's thread. Perhaps then it will recognize your sd card.

Try flashing Eh03 stock with odin with out pit or repartition.

Flash Cwm with Odin

Hi guys I am having a lot of trouble, I am trying to get ICS on my phone, but I don't have CWM, first I did some stuff with odin, and got a soft brick, luckily I returned to stock and am back. I am root, I tried flashing cwm but it won't stick, and I can't flash the zip in the stock recovery. Is there a way I can flash this with Odin?
You have root? No need to use Odin then. Use Mobile Odin; it's much easier, and it won't trip the flash counter.

Can you link what exactly you are attempting to flash to get cwm.
On the i777 recovery is part of the kernel so to get cwm recovery you should be flashing a kernel with cwm.

You can use any of these - you just have to use some kind of archive manager and extract the "zimage" file (the zimage is the kernel) from the zip you download from this thread. Put that zimage on your phones sdcard (note there is no file extension on the zimage file) and you can flash that with mobile Odin.
Also I have not read through the op in a while but I think entropy included at least one straight Odin flashable kernel download link, but like I said above you can extract the zimage from any one of his links and that can be flashed in mobile Odin.

Dayv, Can you flash any of Entropy512's DD on 2.3.4 KH7 stock with root to get CWM with no probs? I know to flash the Zimg in mobile odin. Is that the only way to get CWM on the phone by flashing another kernel? Just wondering how to back up my stock kernel with out flashing another kernel with CWM. So I guess Entropy512's kernel is a stock modified kernel? Just trying to get this all figured out. Thanks for any info you can provide!
Edit: N/M I need to back up my stock ROM with CWM not the "Kernel" I get it now.... Will Entropy512's DD work with 2.3.4 KH7 stock with root with no probs?

Yes, Entropy's DD will work with KH7.
So what you're trying to do is...what? Back up your stock ROM? If you're just talking about the stock system image and kernel, you don't need to back those up; you can always download them again from the Return to Stock thread.
If you're trying to do a nandroid backup (full system + data backup), you can't do that without flashing a kernel containing CWM Recovery. Entropy's kernel is one of these. Just flash that kernel using Mobile Odin.
It seems you've confused a couple things, I'll clarify.
On these phones, CWM is included with the custom Kernels provided by Entropy512, or Ktoon or Siyah, et al. CWM however, is not a Kernel, when you boot into CWM mode, your bypassing the loading of the Kernel. Think of it like this. When you press the power button (and only the power button) on your phone, it's hard wired into the phone to boot the Kernel, the Kernel sets up a hardware environment, loads the RAMDisk etc and does it's thing. IF you have a Kernel that includes CWM, you can bypass this by loading CWM INSTEAD of the Kernel. Note, you need to reboot into CWM or use a different set of buttons to get there, power alone, is hard wired to boot the Kernel.
If you came from a different manufacturer, say Motorola, the above process is different, as they lock their bootloaders and you cannot change the Kernel, you use a different process to load CWM, and boot to it instead of the Kernel. As Samsung has an unlocked bootloader, the process of getting CWM is much simpler.
And Mattdm is 100% correct, no need to flash your stock recovery, it's easy enough to download it. If you've got your phone all setup just the way you want it and want to make a backup of it, boot into CWM, scroll to backup and restore, press power, choose backup, use volume up/down to scroll to backup and press power. It will create a backup in a folder called Clockworkmod. It can easily be restored via CWM if you have the need too.
Hope this helped a lil.
Wink
Thanks Mattdm and Winklie I see now it's a full system + data backup not a Kernel back up... Any tips on what one of Entropy512's DD to flash? I see people in that thread saying 12/8/2011? I just don't want the battery problem people talk about. I prob should be asking these questions in that thread huh? Thanks again!! XDA and all (well most) the people on here are the BEST....

Yeah 12/8 is a good one. I've always been partial to 2/28 though, and I've also had good results with 3/4. Try a couple and see which one works better for you.
Kernels behave differently on different phones. I am using the NEAK Kernel with amazing performance and battery life. Others have had problems, with the exact same hardware, so it shows a lack of maturity in the fab process for these kinds of variances.
As for changing Kernels, use a Kernel cleaning script found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1428530 before each change.
Barring a problem (lockup, reboots, etc) you need a give a Kernel 3 or so battery charges to 'settle in' before you can really access the battery life. Like I said, different Kernels behave differently on different peoples phones, so what works for me, might not work for you. However it's so simple to change Kernels, feel free to experiment to find what suits your needs best.
Hope this helped.

[Q] Is there anyway to flash a kernel from recovery?

Noob here,
Originally i was trying just to root my phone. I didn't want to flash any roms or anything like that just root it so i can get rid of the bloatware, and so after much reading i found that the only way to do it on ICS required a method that might have a bricking bug. Well i went for it anyway, did it successfully. All was well, saw the superuser icon, purchased mobile odin pro did the whole bit. It seemed to be working great. Then i had to immediately change kernels since the stock kernel seems to be the culprit with the whole bricking bug situation. Alrighty, well i went and did that sort of successfully? I chose Siyah since thats what most people in the thread chose. Flashed it with mobile odin pro then it got stuck on boot. After more research i figured out where i went wrong, apparently the first link to the siyah kernel was a CWM/jb kernel or some such situation. I apparently should have downloaded the one further down. My fault for being so quick to try to get it all over with. Now my issue now is i'm stuck at boot, Is it possible to somehow flash the zimage of the proper kernel from the recovery menu? Or would i need to flash a tar file or zip file? would that still work if i used a brand new sdcard or would it have had to have been installed previously? Any help or guidance would be very appreciated. Thank you!

Good job doing all the reading you did. Sorry this happened If the jellybean kernel flashed and went to reboot you should have CWM recovery!!! If you download the 4.3.3 ICS no mic swap kernel Yes you can transfer the kernel to a microSD card from your PC with the adapter then insert it in the phone and then flash it in CWM install zip from Sdcard. You can transfer it from your PC to your phone using CWM, and flash the .zip I have never done this so I cant give you detailed info how to do it but I hope some one cool will help you with that if you need it. All you need to do is flash the ICS kernel in CWM and you will be good to go!! Worse case flash the stock rooted ICS package again in Odin and it will flash the stock ICS kernel with the firmware again then flash the right ICS Kernel in Mobile Odin .... GL

I was looking at cyanogenmod 11 but and the beanstalk one, but the rear camera doesn't work right i heard. I would kindof like a kitkat rom but if i have to use jellybean then i guess i do. i would like to know which rom is recommended
hey you all i need a little help rooting my galaxy player 5.0. model YP-G70 firmware 2.3.5 kernel version [email protected] #2 build number GINGERBREAD.UEK18
i was gonna use the superoneclick program but it says "file download blocked." isn't shortfuse.org the site to get it from? or where do i get the program?
I had already installed Samsung Kies, but now i need the superoneclick program. I was trying to get version 2.3.3. so what i'm wondering is where and how do you get superoneclick???
I've done a lot of researching which way is the best to root it, and i think superoneclick looks best. please tell me different if i'm wrong ... so yeah... thanks in advance
Your right to try and use superoneclick as a rooting program. Try downloading the most updated version and scan on Norton for viruses. Then open the program, make sure you have USB debugging on and hit root. After that hit yes when you get prompted to test and unplug your device and reboot.

Here's a link to CNET to download. If diwnlias did not work try looking for it on xda

thanks for answering!! i clicked on the link and hit download and it downloaded but it said that chrome blocked, cause it's malicious. (pic below) it shows up under my downloads though. i scanned it with vipre (i use that instead of norton) and it said it was trojan. should i just try to run it anyway or what...
edit: i tried opening it from my downloads and here's what it brings up. pic below
Antivirus saying the package is malicious is perfectly normal. The 2 root exploits used in SuperOneClick are already identified as Android-based trojans in all modern antivirus softwares. If you downloaded from a trusted site, DISABLE your antivirus software and start the rooting process. When you're done, don't forget to turn it back on.

I got it rooted!! so i think... i have the app superuser soo yeah... now i wanna flash a custom rom which i have to research or if you all would be kind enough to help me with. i didn't do any research on that yet so i really know nothing. just that i'm missing out on some good stuff i think

Now that you are rooted it is time for some awesome custom ROMs. There is cm11 you could try by going into the development page and downloading it. But before you flash make sure you have a nandroid back up and you go in this order if you want to run cm11.
Gingerbread, ice cream sandwich, jelly bean, jelly bean 4.3, then cm11. Make sure your recovery is updated when flashing different rims or it might come out as a herring.
Also you could just go straight to KitKat. If you want.

I think he doesn't even have a custom recovery yet and need some guide on that. Unfortunately I couldn't help because I have a Player 4.0 instead of 5.0.

If you wanna help me out I'd really appreciate it
The camera works

I was reading some tutorials for installing CWM recovery. a lot of them say that you would have to flash a kernel with it built into it. and another one says to use rom manager app which I have but the app doesn't support a galaxy player 5.0. so i wanna install it but I don't know how. like there are so many tutorials. flashing a kernel is risky I heard. not sure how i should start

Go for the kernel route. Find a CWM'd kernel that supports your current version of stock ROM and flash that. ROM Manager performs badly even on supported devices so don't even think about it.
And... The risk of flashing a kernel/ROM is something you eventually have to get over if you want your device better

ok thanks!! I'll start lookin' for the right kernel if you have any recommendations just let me know =D
ok I downloaded a kernel (didn't flash it yet). I downloaded this kernel > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2318550 and i'm gonna download odin to flash it with but i don't think it's a .tar file so will odin work???? also i guess i'll just download the latest version of odin...?? it said that some versions aren't compatible with some devices.
EDIT it's a .zip file. i think you need cwm to flash it. please tell me if i'm wrong. but i don't have cwm. so i think i might have to choose another kernel ??
also will flashing that kernel erase my third-party apps or app data??
and when i get this kernel on, will I be able to run cm11 on here or will i have to get a different kernel to run on that??
also i think this vid might be a good one. but he never says that he does a nandroid backup or anything

Yeah this kernel is CWM only, so no go. As far as Odin compatibility goes, no, the latest version won't always work with anything. Use Odin 1.8x if you can (mine is 1.85 for my Player 4.0 and Captivate, should be the same for Galaxy S-family devices).
Kernels don't wipe any of your data, though flashing a wrong kernel which causes bootloop may do.
After flashing the corresponding kernel, get into CWM recovery and start flashing CM or the ROM you want as per the instructions given in the ROM's post. All AOSP-based ROMs run different (and incompatible) kernels than stock so don't worry about kernels once you're in.

so what kernel should i get? it has to be a Gingerbread one right? since i'm still on stock gingerbread rom. should I use Entropy's Daily Driver? that would be the only other one, right?
and once i get a jellybean or a kk rom wouldn't it be a good idea to get a better kernel?? like one made for a kk or jb? would it be faster? but then i would have to switch kernels if i would for any reason want to go back to stock gb rom??

I have a Player 4.0 instead of a 5.0 so unfortunately can't help you with finding the right kernel. Yes it's best for stock Gingerbread, but if you find Froyo ones, they can also be used. Do note that you can't boot into Gingerbread with a Froyo kernel, so use its CWM to flash whatever you want immediately afterwards.
I don't know of any JB/KK custom kernels, and since Player's single core CPU has its limitations, a custom kernel won't make it much better. At least on my IncS, even overclocking to 1.6GHz won't help with KK eating up my resources.
GB, JB, KK - kernels for different versions of Android are usually not cross-compatible, so you *must* switch kernel if you want to fall back to GB.

thank you very much for your help. i was able to flash a custom kernel and get cwm. thanks you helped a lot
now i got the rom i was gonna flash downloaded it and extracted it. and i shouldn't have extracted it. then i was trying to flash it and i discovered i messed up. so i pulled the sd card out (which i had a complete nandroid backup on.) [the real mistake] and decided to start over. like, put the zipped files on the sd card. so i put the zips (unextracted) onto my micro sd but it can't mount the sd. so i think i'm like screwed. please help me
oh and when i boot all i see is the samsung logo, then it goes straight to cwm recorvery. I can also get into download mode. so I can get into cwm but my recovery is on my micro sd and it can't mount it. (i did a nandroid backup but it doesn't benefit me now. i also have to backup on my pc, but my pc doesn't wanna recognize it) did i brick it??
what i did...went into cwm wipe data/factory reset and wiped it. next > mounts and storage and clicked format system, and formatted it. then last i wiped dalvik cache. then i went to flash the rom (CM9) and it didn't flash. (because i had extracted it on the pc. it no longer was a .zip) don't know what i was thinkin' but yeah...
as of now i'm gonna start looking for threads to fix it.
i don't think samsung kies is working right either. :/ http://i.imgur.com/WV0iBPk.jpg
please help me unbrick it or whatever i need to do. only made one small mistake and now all this... :'( if you know anything about how to fix it pls reply. i need all the help i can get. thanks ...

Easy, bro. Does your current CWM recovery have a "sideload" option? Look for that either in the main menu or in the "install zip from sdcard" section. If you have that, then you could try sideloading a ROM directly from your PC to your device and it will flash automatically. For more instructions, just Google "ADB sideload".
If that doesn't cut it... Grab Odin and a stock GB firmware (these should be floating around in Dev section), flash that by Odin, and your Player gets returned to GB stock condition, where you can start over.

no it doesn't have a sideload option anywhere. i have odin. and for the firmware, doesn't it have to be in the .tar form for odin to flash it?? i'll check that out. btw thanks !!
but the computer doesn't wanna recognize my device. so how can i flash anything??
EDIT do you think i could flash my nandroid backup through odin?? it has .tar files and one .md5 file, but 2 that aren't. i'll post a screen shot. but if i flash each of the .tar files and the .md5 file via odin do you think it would work? that file is only a .md5 though and not a .tar.md5 so idk

No, nandroid backups won't be recognized by Odin. Just try finding a stock firmware out there. If you want your data back from your nandroid backup, you can always restore everything to normal first, then restore that nandroid and do whatever you please.
