S2 boot loop - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone was rooted (very recently) and I reset the counter to 0; all was working fine - stock firmware Jelly Bean from ICS. I do not use custom firmware.
I reset my phone and since then my phone is constantly going through boot loop. I re-flashed a few times with success in odin the stock firmware however even after success the phone remains in boot loop. I cannot get access to the recovery console but the phone does enter download mode. As an idiot I re-flashed the root kernel again since flashing the firmware would have wiped the root (?) to see if I could now access the recovery console - made no difference but this has triggered the counter to 1. I have Googled (including this site) for a resolution to this problem and the only option I seem to have is to flash PIT file:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1760107
and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667886
I have the international version (factory unlocked XEU S2 16GB) and and I'm not sure which PIT file to use.
I am reluctant to try this method in case I damage the phone.
I am new to all this and can somebody who is knowledgeable advise me what to do next. I would be most grateful.

Thank you for your reply. This is what I have flashed. First JB then ICS. Stock firmware from this site. The boot screen did change however from JB to ICS when I falshed back from JB to ICS but to no avail; still boot loop.

Thank you once again for your reply. I am sorry for the misunderstanding, as mentioned before I am new to this. Thank you for your patience but would it matter what stock kernel I use or can I use any stock Samsung kernel with XEU. The repair center has my phone at present and they are looking to charge me saying I rooted. Counter was 0 (even fault already occurred by this time) but when I flashed Siyah kernel successfully still no recovery console. Re flashed firmware to stock a few times (always at stock) but counter as stated before went to 1 - couldn't get rid of this. Due to this they want to charge! Many thanks

Tell em to f*ck off, get the device back, you'll get it working, and not via pit file.

It's just a bootloop, you can nuke it up and all.
I'd advice against any forum aside from xda tho, just report here and we'll get you up & runnin' in no time.

Got my phone back. After much disputing the phone has been repaired by the service center. I had to pay them but the retailer paid me for the repair - tried to cancel the repair but it was too late so I could go about fixing it myself. They have left the counter at 1. I have now got rid of this (rooted (siyah) - triangle away - re flashed back to stock ICS 4.0.4). All worked well.
However I am having difficulty finding the stock kernel for the handset just in case the above happens again when I upgrade to JB again. It has been a great (although stressful) learning curve and I am learning an enormous lot from this site amongst others. Seem to have got the bug for this...no programming experience though!!!
Details on the phone are:
Kernel Version 3.0.15 -I9100XWLPT-CL941023
Hence kernel XWLPT, so the question is, which stock kernel am I to download? Looked in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
but cannot find it.
Many thanks

You got lucky there, they must have missed the binary count.
Here's what you need:
Mobile Odin Pro:
- Lets you go back and forth with stock ROMs.
- Roots the ROM while it flashes it (optional)
- Flashes with own kernel (GB based) so no brick bug danger.
- Easy, fast and reliable.
- 5 bucks (well spent)
LSJ:
This is JB leak, it's great ROM to get you out of trouble, no bootloops and stuff, and works as a step stone for official JB.
Flash Code, Phone & CSC only.
I9100 ROMs:
Bunch of 4.0.3, 4.0.4 & 4.1.2 ROMs.
Online Android Backup.:
Awesome tool to back your current ROM for a rainy day.

No, no. They spotted the counter at 1. Retailer refunded; disputed root. Service center were b*****ds. Will try your method in future, but is there a stock kernel for XWLPT, or which one is the closest? Thanks for your help so far!
UPDATE:
Found it thank you. Viewed that page (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487) before bust missed the kernel bit below!!!!

Recovering an ATT Galaxy S2 after flashing GT-I9100 Firmware

I've spent the last 2 days trying to fix my mistake. I have the GS2 ATT version, and I didn't realise there was a difference between that and the GTI9100 S2.
I wanted to give some tips I learned on how to recover your phone if you make this mistake.
First, here are some posts you'll want to look at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432 - Stock firwmware
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285823 - Clockworkmod for the ATT
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286192 - Cyanogenmod for our phones.
Using Odin and the stock firmware, you can recover your phone to a 95% working state. Once I got my stock firmware on there, I found that while making calls my phone made no sound, and the mic didn't work. The mic did work when I wasn't making calls though.
I reflashed the modem.bin file found on the stock firmware, not sure if its required but that is what I did first. Then, I unpacked the rooted stock firmware, and flashed JUST THE zImage file. After doing this, I rebooted, and my calls were working again.
After that, I installed the correct version of Clockworkmod, and then CM7 nightly. Now everything seems to be running great on my phone.
Hope this helps someone out there,
-Orbital

Yes, it will return a status error 7 which means it's unmatched. Ask me how I know. I flashed international roms last night and used this fix to get me good again.
I flashed a KE7 I9100 build to my I777 and saw no ill effects other than incorrect capacitive button mapping. Which build did you flash? Did you make sure to wipe data factory reset afterwards.
So you are saying that you wre able to flash Euro ROMS and your phone booted just fine? Mine didnt boot at all. Did you flash the KERNEL for ATT on top of it ?

The simple thing would be to change out the sec_touchkey.kl with rootexplorer and take the sec_touchkey from system/usr/keylayout should fix the i9100 rom to work with the i777. Seeing as how this worked for the Captivate *i897* for jvr, jvs, and jvt darkyrom releases and I would assume that it would work.

Personally I would think that you had a bad flash? Did you flash through Odin or CWM? From what I have been reading the gb bootloaders between the i777 and i9100 are different and I can see if you used a custom i9100 rom flashing via cwm could cause that. Since I am not too sure on the sgs2 if the differences between the euro models versus the carrier locked, the Kernel will not fix the button mapping, I learned this with the captivate when I switched over to using DarkyRom jvr and jvs builds since they were the most stable of GB for the i897 captivate. Plus if you are going to run a i9100 rom, I am sure the modem will not work with the att kernel. Especially if the situation with the cappy is any indication that att kernel needs att modem and i9000 kernel needs i9000 modem. I will be able to know more as soon as I get my i777 tomorrow.

Did the same thing and made it back to ATT version and running CM7 for now. Still have an I9100 boot screen with a yellow logo. How do I get rid of that?
SO why do you say this flashes you back to 95%? Is there no 100% return to stock fix?

Some people need to wipe or also flash the modem for 100%.
Also, people who managed to flash a bootloader without hardbricking can't get back to stock with any confirmed method.
I have posted bootloader dumps, but no one has flashed them and I'm not messing with trying to flash them. They are dumps from my device and that is the ONLY guarantee I provide for them.

question regarding sayah 3.5.1 and with/without mic swap

Hello.
I just rooted my ATT GS2 I777 phone using a method over at galaxys2root.com. i then installed the latest kernel 3.5.1 Sayah WITHOUT mic swap. Can someone please tell me the difference between WITH and WITHOUT mic swap and what it is exactly?
I'm looking for a rom to install now and seem to be having issues finding one that isn't based off the 9100 phone even though they are listed in the I777 forums. I would like to install Serendipity9 or Galaxy Nexus ROMs but not sure if I needed the 3.5.1 WITH mic swap rom or not.
Please help.
Thanks.
With Without mike swap is for I777 stock roms and custom roms made from I777 stock as base, ie Semi. Mike swap is for roms made from I9100 base, or aosp roms.
It doesn't really matter though, because when you install a custom rom, it will also install the kernel that comes with the rom. If it doesn't come with your preferred kernel, then you can flash the kernel or your choice after you flash the rom of your choice.
I think you meant to say for your first word is "Without", correct?
I'm going to try to install Serendipity9 even though I can't find anything about the change log to see what kernel is included.

Yes. Fixed it, lol.
The kernel is CherryPicker. See here. I think it's been a while since the rom has been updated. I think Mikey is working on something else now.
I did get the Serendipity 9.4 installed and then ran Siyah 3.5.1 Kernel (with mic swap) and so far everything seems to be working ok.
Thank you for your help.
I would flash something else asap.. Here's a hint, anything it our development section!

Not sure what you are talking about.
I rooted my phone using their method (odin and siyah kernel). yes now my phone boots saying I9100 and the yellow triangle.
I then Installed Serendipity 9.4 Rom from their official site.
I then Installed Siyah Kernel 3.5.1 from here.
I didn't want to brick my phone by rooting and there are a lot of methods to do so and a lot of old information out on the forums.
What is wrong with what I did?
I plan on going to Jellybean and the latest siyah when the time comes when more stable.
I did see this post over here:

I was thinking about doing the below and following the instructions, but no description was there for what this actually did and I'm new to all this.
Odin3 One-click Downloader I-777 UCKH7 Stock + Root No Bootloaders
I would appreciate it if you can point me in the right direction on how to properly put the phone back and then how to properly root it again.
Well basically this site had a lot of great info and awesome devs. But other sites take their stuff, post links to download the roms and never give proper credit. As far as what yer asking, are u asking how to return to stock? If so, just Google XDA i777 download repository. Here's a link to it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20229527&postcount=46 I would go with the stock rooted 2.3.4 without boot loaders. Flash it with Odin. Or mobile Odin pro.

I'm asking (since they are telling me to get this **** off my phone) how to get it properly rooted and then go from there.
So if I just run Odin3 One-click Downloader I-777 UCKH7 Stock + Root No Bootloaders, that will properly put my phone back to factory + being rooted. Correct?
The only issue I have with my phone is it boots with an I9100 screen instead of the I777 screen. If I run the above with that properly show the I777 screen or not?
I'm guessing I have some bootloader on my phone since it is showing the I9100 screen??? That is why you guys are telling me to get that off there???

There's nothing wrong with what you did. You rooted your phone and installed a custom firmware without causing any problems. If you are satisfied with your phone as it is, do not flash back to stock just because of some of the posts here.
There are problems with GalaxyS2Root.com. Some of the files that are available there cause people to brick their phones, or have other problems. When the name comes up, people here react to it. That accounts for some of the posts here. But in your case, since you had no problems, and your custom flash went ok as well, not to worry.
Because you flashed a custom kernel using Odin when you rooted with the GalaxyS2Root method, you incremented the flash counter, which also causes the I9100 boot screen with the yellow warning triangle. That can be cleared with a USB jig, or with the application Triangle Away by codeworx which can be used only on ICS or above.

You did not flash I9100 bootloaders. Samsung was lazy, when they made the firmware for I777 they didn't update that image, so it still says I9100.
Oh, and I would suggest that you avoid GalaxyS2Root.com in the future for your own peace of mind.
Creepy,
Thanks again. I did send you a PM as well.
I don't know what a bootloader is and thought maybe the cause of the I9100 screen is due to a bootloader which may cause problems or something for future installs of Kernels and ROMs.
Since my phone is already rooted I plan to just continue to use this site for ROMs and Kernels. I'm still learning.

I would start over fresh if needed but it looks like I'm ok anyway. I'll move to Siyah 4.1.1( or later) and Jellybean at a later time when more stable I guess.

How do i get back to original rom

hi guys,
i have a samsung galaxy s2 (GT-i9100 - NFC), which i got from orange end of 2011. I the in jan 2012 got help from this forum to root my phone and change the rom from the original to:-
Rom & Build No: VillianROM 3.0
And' ver: 2.3.5
Baseband: i9100XXki1
Kernel: 2.6.35.11-ninphetamine-2.0.5+ninpo @ titan #20
Although the phone works okay, i'm beginning to notice a lot of slowdowns and regular reboots, so i want to go back to whatever latest google android OS the S2 can handle (rooted). I've forgotten what to do and would be most grateful if someone could please help me with the following:-
1. Whats the best software/method to backup everything?
2. What is the latest rom (original, but should not have a provider's bloatware) i can use on the S2?
3. Once backed up, how do i change from VillianRom to the latest/best OS currently available?
4. How can i root the original rom?
Thanks once again

For official stock rom, check

And search latest stock rom for your region.
If you like custom rom, then there are so many roms on xda. I like omega and alliance roms. Choice varies from person to person

1. Depends. You can do a backup in CWM to image your device or you can use Titanium Backup Pro to just backup your apps/appdata and restore to new rom.
2. http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/ < Check your device/model here.
3. Well just so you're clear, There is no "best" its subjective. Also "latest" depends on what type of rom you want to flash like Sammy/AOSP/AOKP/CM/MIUI etc. To flash latest samsung do it via ODIN, to flash any other do it via CWM. All info you need is already on forum.
4. By flashing custom kernel via ODIN.
All your questions have already been answered countless times.
Thanks very much guys. I simply want a fast lean rom as some seem to be slow running.
Doesn't get better than this.
sendign the phone for warranty?
you will need to flash back the original rom and unroot your phone.
if they found your phone is rooted the warranty void, experience it before so be aware of this.
Let me thank you guys for advicing me. I am most grateful. I read your posts a bit late and in the meantime, I think i have bricked my phone as i've flashed Samsung's original FW (I9100PBVLP8_I9100PORALP8_ORA) from sammobile.com. I used Odin v3 and successfully flashed the phone, but it's simply stuck on the boot logo. I have even done the following:-
I've managed to wipe the cache partition, but the recovery menu has No advanced options. It says:-
ANDROID SYSTEM RECOVERY <3a>
reboot system now
apply update from ext' storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
test redband fota[FS]
But i still cannot get it to boot. I have also tried to use an old nandroid.md5 backup i made, but odin reports the file as invalid.
I'm desperate guys, please could someone help me.
Download Mode and re flash.
Are you sure you are flashing the right ROM right? Check under the battery to see the Device Model.
If it's i9100, then make sure you are downloading a i9100 ROM.
Thanks very much for your advice gastonw - i have managed to fix the problem now by going into system recovery and doing a factory reset, so thank you.
Although everything seems to be working fine, i would have preferred a more newer 4.2 jelly bean rather than 4.0.3. Oh well beggars can't be choosers and all that, lol! I guess i'll have to re-root it again.
gastonw mate ur a star! I've installed the latest JB rom u posted earlier and i'm very happy with it.
Now before i damage it beyond repair, how do i root it safely?

Hi You could try this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 its quite safe so ether should work or wont, if don't no harm done as it doesn't need a insecure kernel.
I'm quite new myself @ this so plz use caution when trying it out.
Peace

Good to know man, enjoy it
About root, I've seen a couple of methods laying around the threads, I'm sure they're safe.
I still think that ExynosAbuse app is the fastest way to Root now (one-click).
Here's a vid. I never tried it tho.
Thanks very much for the links AnubuRe and Gastonw.
Gastonw mate, i have been playing with the rom you posted a link to. Don't get me wrong, it's great and very fast, but the downside is that it doesn't have a huge number of options to tweak etc. Now someone mentioned a rom called Neatrom, but i'm wondering what you can recommend? I don't want a bloated rom...i want a fast rom, but with some options to allow me more greater control over the phone.
Also, i know this is a bit off-topic, but can you recommend me a widget app, where i can quickly dial phone numbers i.e. by touching a person's photo?

rom advice (wifes phone)

this is my wifes phone (I have a Note) I want to know what rom I can go to that is very stable , prefer ics :
Samsung SGH-I777
2.3.6
I777UCKK6
2.3.35.14
GINGERBREAD.UCKK6
sorry but I dont generally mess with her phone , she does have root and cwm touch 5.5.0.4 . There seems to be a wifi problem it turns on and then off , never sticking , I suppose wiping all might help , I hate seeming naive but when I mess with my own phone its all a chance , I dont want to just do that with hers!
There are a lot of stable roms. Do you want touchwiz based or AOSP based? I don't have an opinion on AOSP roms because I've barely used any of them.
For Samsung based roms, Shoman94's roms are very stable and popular. That's what I use as my daily driver. For ICS, use SHOstock2, but for the latest JB use SHOstock3.

When you flash a new ROM you will have to wipe. Also that's caused by using a foreign kernel aka one from galaxys2root.com

I want to flash a rom with this keneral can I flash any of the roms you mentioned? will that fix my wifi? should I try to re-install this kernel , or use entropys? If I remember correctly, I think that version of the Siyah kernel was put out by zedomax on GalaxyS2Root website. That kernel combined with UCKK6 was always a problem. In fact, that package was always a problem.
Anyway, the kernel has ClockworkMod Recovery. You should decide on a good rom, as discussed above, download the zip file and use usb to transfer it to the sdcard on the phone, then boot into recovery, perform a wipe data/factory reset, and flash the rom. It doesn't matter that you are on Gingerbread right now. You can flash either an ICS or JellyBean rom because the package will contain the complete system and kernel and modem, everything.
---------- Post added at 07:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:08 PM ----------
Enter recovery by holding down all three of vol + vol - and power buttons continuously until it boots into recovery. If it won't boot into recovery, then it might be a bad flash.
Thank you, I got the siyah kernel from a thread here, when I first got the phone (off ebay )it did in fact have the wrong kernel,I used entropy flash back to get back,I guess I did something else, but I will use one of the roms you mentioned ,glad we have you here ,I've been messing with wp7 the last few years and finally getting back to android (cept been playing with boot loaders in a500)

It is exactly that, a counter, and the only purpose of it as far as we know is warranty protection, so I would say no, it's not important. On the other hand, most folks don't like the splash screen with the yellow triangle, but you can remove that easily enough if you still get it on boot.

I don't also have warranty so the flash counter is not my concern here, getting Shostock3 JB running on my phone is. pls my question is are there any other packages apart from the Shostock3 Rom that i would need to download to enable me flash the Shostock3 Rom?
What i have at the moment is the "I777UCKH7 Return/Unbrick to Stock with Root" that i downloded thru your signature. Dose this contain everything i would be needing to successfully flash the Shostock3 Rom?
Thank you.

No. You also need to install a custom kernel that contains ClockworkMod Recovery. Please read through the guide "How to install custom firmware without incrementing the flash counter" (link in sig) because it will help you see how things fit together.

Did u update via kies or odin?
If u used a firmware and flashed via odin, please try another firmware.
Over this try to do a factory reset after u flashed the FW.

Well your phone is i9100g... You sure you flashed ROM of i9100g and not of galaxy s2 i9100...coz many people make that mistake..
Post this in the i9100g...idk how much we can help you with this..
Anyways, try factory resetting the phone...if no luck take it to Samsung customer care...it can be a hardware problem. ..
And ya, which ROM are you flashing? The official stock ROM or custom ROM?
Custom ROM do have many bugs and vary from phone to phone. .. Try going to stick for one and check if problem is still there. .
Press thanx if I helped...

cannot post on i9100g dev becoz my post still under 10...
im sure i flash the right rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679636
ya..done factory reset but still got the problem...
like i said before..the touchscreen work fine if i plugin charger or connect usb to pc/laptop...
i dont think it becoz hardware problem since it work perfect on stock GB, stock ICS, aokp, CM and 4-5 other custom ROM...
can it becoz of battery? i use 1650mah...i have try 1500mah and touch screen getting more worst...
i still cant find any solution for my phone..
already try many method like
- using re-partion on odin with pit file
- format data, system, cache, emmc
- wipe data/factory reset/dalvic cache
- flash using odin/cwm
- root/unroot
after done all above..touch screen laggy and still make dash line on drawing...
after my last post...i have try most rom on Galaxy S II I9100G Android Development Section and my touchscreen on all rom are working perfect except official stock JB or custom rom base on stock JB...
forgot to mention that the day on my 1st time installing stock JB i accidently flash Galaxy tab 2 p3100 firmware and got softbrick
but successfuly unbrick then done flashing stock JB...dunno if this incident can damage my phone...
or is other way to make FULL FORMAT internal SD? to make sure the file that i accidently flash completely remove...

you could try Blazing Kernel, it can be flashed via stock recovery. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2113545.
Or you could also flash original GB and upgrade to JB either through OTA or KIES.

I have tried that two methods, Flashing GB (everything works great), flashing ICS (everything works great too), and then JB trough OTA and the touch screen doesnt work properly. I have tried the last Blazing Kernel too without success.
Thanks for the help.
Any ideas?
Try stock kernel. Customs aren't ready yet.

Dosent work either. :/
We have the same problem dude, touch screen not working properly after stock jb (xef) flash but working flawlessly when phone is plugged. I can't have a custom rom above 4.2.1, else I have the problem. Now I'm on CM10.1 4.2.1 and can't leave it because of this, the official rom I want is the official.
Did you got the screen of your phone replaced ? Because mine was and I was wondering if it was that.
