[Q] What Happened To My AMOLED Screen? Burn In or..? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Click the pic to enlarge
Guys, I dunno how did this happened, it was fine in the early morning, then I went to school, putting my phone into my pocket. At school I used my phone and noticed that blueish tint on the bottom right edge of the screen
Is that burn in or the AMOLED starting to degrade? Or it caused by a contact with magnets like CRT?
I dunno how to fix this now, tried so much Burn-In apps and video, ran them for a few hours, the problem isn't gone.
If only I had to fix the screen, what is the estimated cost?
Because I had just replaced the mainboard of this phone for 150$ :crying:

120 bucks aprox.
Your S2 turned out to be kinda expensive.

Same kinda thing happened to my friends GS2. He dropped it like from a 2 feet height. no damage to the glass or touch screen. but a small purple dot appeared on the top of the screen. And then he switched on the phone next day the whole screen turned into purple. But the phone and the touch worked perfectly. He had to replace the screen for about $160

This phone was in my pocket, no way it's because I dropped the phone (I'm really sure)
Then I'm going to sell this phone maybe.
What if I sell it for 260$? The usual price for a 2nd hand Galaxy S2 in Indonesia is 340$ (and considering I just replaced the mainboard)

[Q] Strange screen problem

Hello everyone!
I'm new here, and don't normally post on forums about technical issues (too nervous!) but something very odd came up on my Galaxy s2 today and my google-fu has failed me so far in finding anything similar.
I got it at the beginning of September this year, keep it in one of those leather wallet cases to protect it (and a screen protector), and during the day it mainly just sits on my desk at work. For some reason however, today, this just appeared (see attachments).
It's a small, lilac-purple smudge in the lower right hand corner. It doesn't move when the screen moves, and the touchscreen still works just fine. You can also still see images below it, it just tints them purple. It's less visible when the screen is brighter, but still kind of there.
I have turned it off an on again, turned it off and removed the battery, and left it off for a while to cool down. It was still there when I turned the phone back on.
As far as I know there is no water damage, and I don't believe it has been in contact with any magnets (apart from the mini one that clasps the case shut). I'm completely baffled! Is it a defect, or something I've somehow managed to cause? I've tried to be very careful, as I know what a klutz I am! The phone is also not rooted or hacked in any way.
If anyone has any thoughts or advice, I would greatly appreciate it!
Thank you very much
I think is magnet

I wondered the same thing, but I left it on a table next to my bed overnight and it seems to have gotten worse - the purple has spread further on to the screen.

+1
to which is why never used a case with magnet.
OP:
It will get progressively worse even if magnet is no where near now.
The purple tint on the entire screen is definitely a defect... get it changed from the Samsung Service Centre! Even I had this problem and my phone atm is at the Service Centre...
There are lot of quality control issues with the SGS2 display...
Never a Samsung again!

Yellow spots in corners

hi guys
I have probleme in my touchpad . I got yellow spots in corners
Anyone got this probleme

Same here, I have 2 of them near to speakers. I only see them when the screen is black( like webos booting). Probably something is pressing to lcd. Can we do something against it? Does it go under warranty?

I have them at random spots at random times (sometimes right at the middle of the screen); I tried sending it in for repair, but they just sent it back after doing a doctor - so the problem is still there.
Took some pics when it happened if someone wants to see it.
Maybe dead pixels?
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
No, in my case, it tends to come and go as it pleases.
I have those spots as well. I think its just normal clouding as on most TVs. Since its only visible when the screen is completely black, its not that much of a problem.
One time I pressed down on the center of the screen by mistake with my elbow, and when I looked at the screen there was a yellow light halo in the center about an inch wide. I freaked out, but I 'massaged' the screen softly in the center and it went away. Might be something pressing behind the screen ?
I've yet to get my TP, hopefully by next week.
But as I read all your posts, it sounds a little bit like "Screen Burn in".
But, burn in usually most noticable with a white screen, not a black screen like some you have mentioned. Again I'm just taking a wild guess here.
I guess I will be able to contribute more when I get my device.
But then again I'm Hoping I won't have this problem at all.
=o)
Edit: 02/10/2012
I've had my HPTP for over a week now and have yet to experience any yellow spots on the screen anywhere.
Could this be an issue that happens over a period of time?
How long have you guys had your HPTP before this problem started?
I have the problem also. There are also some issues, like glue-points between the display and the cover, the display sticks off at the home button and there are other issues of the production. My touchpad is only a few weeks old and now i will send it back under warranty.

yup, same thing just happened to me
On the left side and up in the corner if it is a yellowish on dark that is lightbleed. I have it bad enough it is very visible even at 50%. This appears to be a common issue. I sent mine in for something else and it came back with still light bleed. They have offered advanced replacement, but the more I read the more I believe this is common and will never be fully free of it.
Here's a slideshow for people to make fun of:

Its actually worse than the camera picks up;
That is horrible and nothing remotely like light bleed. Send that bad boy in.
Yeah thats nothing like what I have. You should send that in

I already have, but as mentioned, it just came back the same way; I've had this problem since I've bought it.
The worst ones are at the edges of the screen, but I didn't manage to get pics of when it happened.
Looks like internal screen delamination. That should def. be covered under your warranty as its a manufacturing defect that occurred when the screen was originally made. It's nothing you did.

The problem is that even though its under warranty, they don't do anything about it - possibly because they do not notice it as it pops up at random times.

[Q] Question about replacing the screen..

I love my dear Rezound, as it has helped me so many times, and maybe might've even saved my life at one point. I am the only 1 out of 5 lines who is not tied down to a contract and does not have a Samsung Galaxy S III or Note 2, because I love this phone that much. But the problem is, after 6-7 months after I got it, it fell down on the concrete sidewalk and cracked the screen. It was only two really small hairline cracks, so I didn't think anything of it, only the occasional annoyance that I dropped it whenever I watched a YT video. I was fooling around with a bunch of my friends, and it fell out of my pocket, now the screen's broken to the point where if I touch it, I can sort of like...feel the screen being pushed down. The touch screen still works, and I'm planning to get it replaced at a local mall sometime this month. So I was wondering...if the store rips me off and uses just a cheap screen, will the display be bad? Will I not get that same, cool, color as I did when it wasn't broken?
TL;DR if a store that fixes phones uses a low quality screen, will the colors not be the same as it was before?

it depends on the service at the store. If they charged less than $50 to replace it. 9 times out of 10 it was just the glass.
if it was more. then they did replace the lcd. A lot of the times they will buy OEM but you do have the off chance of getting a China knock off.
tl:dr it is quite possibly they did replace with a bad lcd. Most places offer a warranty on it so i would go talk to them.
If just the digitizer is cracked and not the LCD, then they should just replace the digitizer and all the colors and richness will remain. The only Rusk is dead spots on the touch screen which if its a reputable store should have some kind of warranty I would think.

Strange tear under screen

So here is my dilemma and I need some community input or advice. I have a GN2 titanium. I bought it at my employer Bestbuy. Thing is, there is a strange looking line that resembles a tear under the screen that is slightly curved and is about 3/4" long, maybe a tad more. You can ONLY SEE it when the brightness is turned ALL THE WAY DOWN and you are on a screen that is dark. Now if you go into the light with the darkness down all the way it goes away. Full brightness it cannot be seen. Not even at half brightness or 1/4 brightness can it be seen. Thing is I could easily return it BUT bestbuy stopped carrying the titanium on verizon the day they got it! Crazy right , in other words we are sold out of titanium and are not getting more in. I could always get a white one but I don't think I want a white one. Truth be told I think it's just bugging me and need to tell someone lol. If it was your GN2 would you for one even notice it,and if so would you just roll with it? I have to do all the steps above just to see it. I noticed it when watching on mx player in bed at night on low brightness. The touch screen works fine in that area and everything. I wish I could take a picture but I cant seem to get it to show up in a picture.
tl;dr ?
-Strange tear under glass
-causes no touchscreen/pen issues
-only viewable at 0 brightness , in the dark , on a dark image
-exchange for a white GN2
-live with it

Hmm you sure this isn't just the blotches that show up on amoled screens when it goes dark. If you shut the phone all the way off does the line go away. From what it sounds like without actually seeing the phone it sounds like what I described above. If it is. All the super amoled screens tend to do that

sounds pretty typical of an amoled screen they all suffer from it under very low brightness, I haven't noticed on mine may be because I stopped paying attention for it a long long time ago lol, after having a few phones with amoled screens.

Yep both my Note 2's have the same problem, both are Titanium Gray. My brother got a launch day Marble White from the Verizon store and his screen is immaculate. Not a single black spot or line on his screen. We flipped the lights and tested them using the same app. Once our eyes adjusted, which didn't take more than 10 seconds, it was immediately clear the difference between my phone and his. His screen not only had a deeper black than mine, but it was free of any markings while mine looked brighter and had noticeable splotches all over.
Niiiiiiice.

I don't think the color of the devices have anything to do with it. But all amoled screens are different. I guess I since of the lucky ones mine performs great but had only one little dark spot right under the Samsung logo.

Screen

So my girlfriend dropped her s3 the other night , the screen stays off ( does not light up ) but the touch sensors still work, we can answer calls on it by knowing the approximate location of the answer button, any thoughts on what the issue is ? I would prefer to repair this at home rather than make her pay money through a shop, thanks in advance

It is easy to replace broken GLASS.
but i think you will need to replace screen.
If you purchase assembly of glass, digitizer and screen it will be very easy to replace by yourself.

The glass isnt broken, perfectly clean with no scratches cracks or nicks , it just wont light up;
i had the same problem once, had to be sent to samsung (or wherever) by the shop where i bought it
buying a display and metal frame (obviously you can't buy them seperatly) plus glass would have cost almost the same
i wanted to find out whether the screen still works and it's a problem with my motherboard or vice versa so i unscrewed all bolts to access where the screen is plugged in on the motherboard but i didn't have another s3 to do the same and check it :silly:
still don't know how amoled displays work so it might be possible that whatever's responsible for backlighting the display broke

My thought was that the backlight broke or maybe the entire display system is disconnected , I might just have to take it apart for an exploratory operation,
before it went completely black there was a purple stain which grew until two thirds of my display were purple, the lower part where it started was black.
then i managed to open this samsung hardware debugging menu where you can check for dead pixels by letting your display light up in red, green and blue. there i found out that only blue and green pixels very working correctly in the upper third. the next day every purple pixel was dead.
so 2 months after this little stain appeared my whole display was in the same state as your girlfriend's seem to be now.
so i don't think this plug (it sits in place pretty tight) got loose and that's why it doesn't work anymore.
and my sister had exactly your problem. she dropped her s2 and it immediately went black
she hat to sent it in as well ...
good luck
if you find out what's the problem and want to share it, i am curious about it as well
If possible, check for loose connectors first.
I don't know about replacing the screen. The sheer amount of LOCA makes it a messy job.
Probably the display is dead. You'd need to replace the screen+glass.
There is no back light on an oled screen.
