I've tried a few.. I'm a bit of a ludite in that I don't use any social media but g+.
Go sms was my main app but it's gone to crap with all the bloat, cloud, proprietary chat etc...

Are you using AT&T Messages?

I just happened to be going through the AT&T bloatware and happened upon this app - I decided to see what it was all about, and lo and behold, it's actually useful!
It puts your SMS, voicemails, and call log in the same stream. It also puts them in the cloud, and gives you a Speech-to-Text transcription of your voicemails, which is nice.
I have some minor complaints, but overall I enjoy using it. I have a few concerns about AT&T having all my texts on a website somewhere but it's a great way to have them all already backed up if you lose your phone, etc.
You can even send SMS from the website.
So, are you using it? Do you prefer another app for these things?
I was using it the first week of ownership. It's not bad but I quit because people would text me photos and they would only show up tiny?
Went with the gosms pro app...works great.
I don't want to use it but it's the only way I can get my vvm.. I've tried using the. Apk floating around here but it keeps telling me it can't validate it. I wantbto get away from it

I use it.
I like the VV to Text and the "cloud" functionality... I only want it gone b/c it takes over notifications and I'd like to use the BLN functionality of Da_G's OC Kernel... BLN doesn't work with AT&T Messages (yet).
@n00b1269, VV to Text (Which is what AT&T Messages does) is different than regular VV. I think if you have your account changed to regular VV, then the original VV .apk will work... I think.

your going to have to call or chat with AT&T to have them reprovison your account in order to use the VVM app thats posted here in the forum i had used the messages app first then it screwed my account somehow not letting the VVM app validate if you look at that other thread i posted there
that sound like google voice only GV is 1000% better!
I used it for awhile, but the vlingo in car mode won't read text messages from it. So I switched back to handcent for text, and YouMail for vvm. Works great, and I love the new plugin for YouMail, called who are you, that gives true caller id for all calls.

+1 For Google Voice
I followed the instructions on the Google Voice website and had it up and running in two minutes.

Yes. I like att messaging a lot. Its simple and clean. I like the ui better than GV. For my use it has more functionality than GV except for the option to leave different voicemail greeting for different callers.
GV gives free texting but I have the $30 unlimited m to m and texting so no advantage there. Also I don't think GV support mms unless that's changed.
Only problem I can't get SMS popup app to work with it. I'm using Popup app instead and it works okay.

I am using VVM on my stock GNOTE.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1452330
DL it to your pc and email it to your Gmail acct that is on your Note. Then check the box under apps that allows you to install from Non-Market places. (Unknown sources) Under settings-applications-Unknown sources.
PLEASE NOTE
if you have already set up AT&T Messages, you will need to uninstall it and either call AT&T from another phone or log into your online att.com acct and do the support chat. They will have to remove Voice Mail and the feature AT&T Messages. They will then have to provision/apply Visual Voicemail back on.
It works great and I am stoked to have it back on my phone. I just had the Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and VVM was on there. Loved it. Anyway, hope this helps.

It did that to me to but I did the support chat and had them remove AT&T Messages feature and Voice Mail. I then powered my phone off and on, they added Visual Voicemail back on, powered off and on again and it worked.
The AT&T Messages feature is what is causing the issue.
I'm using it right now for VVM and it seems to be the only way to receive iMessages (Former iPhone User) in group form. If I try and get the messages from the stock app, I cant reply all... Anyone know of any other messaging apps that can receive and send messages in a group sms/mms fashion?

I know GO SMS Pro supports group messaging, but I'm having an issue with people receiving double and triple messages from me while using that.
EDIT: You can't receive iMessages. iOS and OS X only, for now.
The ATT Messages app seems to work the best for me atleast for the iMessage style group chats. Go SMS Pro always splits it up for some reason, not sure why.
question about Go SMS Pro, I installed the app and its working fine (mostly use for the msg without closing other apps) and i would like to set it to my default Messaging app. So i go into Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Messaging>Clear Defaults but when i go to launch Messaging app it does not ask me what app i want to launch nor to set it as default.

If you launch the Messaging app, you're going to launch the Samsung Messaging app. Just like if you pressed S Memo, it's going to launch S Memo, not some other note taking app on the phone. You need to open the GO SMS Pro icon. In Edit Mode, you can drag and drop the GO SMS icon over the default Messaging icon to replace it in the TouchWiz tray.

i only bring up this questions because i dont like the way the icon looks for the GO SMS Pro... i much prefer the default messaging app icon but i guess theirs no way to change that... cause replacing the icon just puts that ugly GO SMS Icon there... lol
Never used it and never realized it did all that. I thought it was like a chat thing for ATT users like 3 of my friends and me could all see each others texts like a chat room.
I've been using Google Voice for years now.
VVM
To be more specific on the issue with VVM. IF you ran the ATT Messaging app, it causes all sorts of changes in ATT's system on your account. The Tech/Rep looking at it for you will tell you all is well, and in their defence, it appears that it is correct. However, it's not and it's deep in their system and they can not control it.
To get it corrected, you have to have them COMPLETLY REMOVE YOUR DATA PLAN ( re-read that 10x.. it is EXACTLY what they have to do to get it working ). VVM is attached to your data plan. They can tinker with voice mail all day, it will do NOTHING for you. And good luck getting a rep who will actually go though the trouble of removing the data plan, especially if your on unlimited in the states still. However, if you anoy them enough, and keep them on the line long enough, they will eventually do it just to shut you up. Your best method of doing this is actually to go to the store and do it there. The reps there have permission to do it, where as the phone tech's kept having to call other departments to get it done.
After 3 days and 4-5 hours on the phone with a tech they got mine working. So I immediatly loaded the att app, it killed VVM, and I was able to drive to my local store, and they had it working again in 10 minutes ( that is 10 minutes after the guy did what i asked, complete removal of the data plan ). I did this just to prove it was a repeatable fix and not a 1x deal based on some random error.
Apologies if this is irrelevant. I don't have a i777, but I set up AT&T Messages on my i727 (Skyrocket). Didn't take more than a day to realize I hated the interface (and the fact that the app shanghais all notifications).
Unable to resolve how to turn off the notifications, on a whim I decided to just try to uninstall the app. To my amazement, it actually worked. My regular VVM went back to normal. I needed no interjection from AT&T at all.
I know this is very much a "hatchet" solution and not a "scalpel", but hopefully it's helpful all the same.

Google Voice (VOIP) App

Is there a Google Voice VOIP app like Talktone or Groove IP on Android/Apple?
I have already tried GoVoice and numerous others, none do VOIP calling. With LTE, I could save a lot of minutes. Skype is nice, but is not free. If not in marketplace, is there a xap that would do Google VOIP calling for me?
Skype is FREEWARE http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps/c3f8e570-68b3-4d6a-bdbb-c0a3f4360a51
With Skype calls to Skype users is free. The app is obtainable on market place.

But you can't call US/Canada numbers for free...you can do that in Google Voice, so I can save my minutes on AT&T.

App itself is free, but calling phone numbers is not. US/Canada calling is free with Google Voice.
There seem to be some Google Voice apps in the marketplace. I don't know how good these are, but you should be aware that the Google support on WP tends to be weak in general. This GoVoice app looks promising though, I guess.
Metrotalk... Try that

Tried the free version that doesn't do VOIP calling.
MetroTalk works
I have metrotalk and mainly use for SMS though so the refresh is set rather high. It also suffers from a lack of data connection with my T2 which isn't the apps fault. The calling also works but requires a 'callback' for your own voice number to show up.
Good app for the money.

Hangouts 4.4

With the new hangouts app, will we be able to receive SMS from our Nexus 10?

No, SMS go through the cellular radio like voice calls, not via Wi-Fi or even 3G data connections.
There are plenty of web-based SMS services (Google Voice, for relevant instance), but the Nexus 10 can not, and can never, send SMS natively

Well that sucks, I thought hangouts would become something like iMessage. Couldn't they sync SMS over WiFi and our Google account like MightyText does?

Don't know about the syncing bit for definite (at least until my N5 arrives and I play around with and my N10 together), however it DOES function almost exactly like iMessage in that if your contact also has Hangouts then you can send your message via the Hangouts IM protocol
Even iMessage (as I understand it) cannot send an SMS to a contact without a cellular modem (i.e. tablets of any type, even iPads). If your contact runs iOS, then they will receive an iMessage regardless of tablet or phone, however it is not an SMS, it is an IM through the iMessage servers and protocol...

I added a slight more clarification on my last paragraph that you might not have seen before quoting!
As a separate workaround, you can use Tablet Talk, which links between your cell and N10. It allows you to send SMS through Tablet Talk on the N10 via your cell phone.

Facebook Messenger app vs. native messaging within Facebook app

What is the advantage of using the Facebook Messenger app if messages can be sent by using the Facebook app directly?
To reply to a message:
Using Facebook app:
Click on notification in notification menu
Type message
Using Messenger app:
Click on notification in notification menu or click on contact bubble
Type message
To type a new message:
Using Facebook app:
Open Facebook app
Click on Message icon
Click compose
Type recipient
Type message
Using Messenger app:
Open Messenger app
Click compose
Type recipient
Type message
So the Messenger app only saves you ONE step (i.e., clicking on the Message icon) in comparison to the Facebook app, in terms of writing a new message. The time saved is negligible.
The only other feature of the Messenger app that I see is that it can send messages to people in your contact list, whether or not they have Facebook, by sending an SMS instead. So it will prefer a Facebook message, but fallback on SMS.
Is there any other advantage of using the Messenger app?

They did, and then they brought it back, probably due in large part to the outcry that ensued.

where did you see that?cant find anything confirming that...Even in this thread there are guys using the re enabler for facebook chat ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-facebook-chat-enabler-t2934179 )
Why would it be necessary to have an enabler if they brought back chat on the main app?
I dont use facebook app and have no way to confirm it right now, but as far as i know, messenger is needed to chat
EDIT: Ok, just tried it, facebook app does not allow chatting. redirects to download messenger. You are probably using the enabler i mentioned earlier.

You are absolutely right, I noticed the interfaces were different between messaging in FB and messaging in the Messenger app, and I wrongly assumed they were independent. However, after disabling Messenger I see that FB messaging doesn't work in the native app, requiring Messenger to be re-enabled.
This essentially renders my question moot. Thanks for the clarification.

Question poor video quality via messenger, whatsup

Hi, i have a new S22+, i did migration from p30 pro thru app. i'm facing problem with quality of video send thru messenger or whatsup. It getting hard compress , very hard like 240p;
i didnt have that issue on p30pro. even i did 1080p video for test to send. and still. I've change quality in messenger app etc, nothing helps. only if i have like 2-5 sec video quality looks ok. if video has bigger MB its garbage. Did cache clear, reinstall messenger/whatsupp. I feel like i lost my money
Do you think factory reset can help ?
Sounds like Messages is sending via SMS/MMS.
Messages uses SMS/MMS by default. You have to turn on Chat Features (RCS) in the settings.

first thing I've checked
It could be a backend server issue.
and its happening all the time? with every single person who i sent video? My last call is factory reset phone... Its stranage none of s22 users has same problem? Couldnt find any info. maybe app during transfer phone to phone messed up some android settings?
Possibly. I presume the people you are sending them to is also using Whatsapp and Messenger. Try clearing the app cache then app data if clearing app cache doesn't work.
